I'm not sure about the others, but I think she did watch HERO (at least the first episode). I remember she wrote something on her message (back then she posted it on her official website) that she totally forgot CYKAS? was the EP when watching that episode. I'm not sure if she watched the remainings tho... I kinda guess she did, or else she wouldn't appear on one episode as a kawaii waitress :D.

How did Distance sell soooo much in its 1st week?!!
I love how her first 3 albums are in the top 10 highest sales for 1st week sales.

Well, Both Distance and A BEST were benefited from the battle. To make you feel happier, the first day sale of Distance was about 1.5 - 1.6 million copies, and I think A BEST was similar to that (about 1. 5 million?).
And First Love should have a higher debut week if Toshiba shipped enough stocks to the cd stores. I think back then someone said the album was sold out in the first 3 days, and it was out of stock for the next 1 or 2 days.. (I wasn't her fan till the may 1999, so I'm not really sure if that's 100% correct).

Amai Yume 6th June 2008 03:41 AM

HOLY WORLD!!!!
OMG, I would love to see another epic battle like that!!!!
But with sales like they are now, no way is that happening.

Melon Panda 6th June 2008 03:52 AM

Even with a competition, the albums would never sell like would years ago, but it could be a big boom for the industry. I'd love to see that happen again between Ayumi and Utada, but I don't want either to turn out the "loser." (I'd rather have one dominate one week and another dominate the second week.)

dddaiyamondo 6th June 2008 04:51 AM

I think we know who would win if Hikki and Ayumi were to battle it out again with albums released the same day. Here are their first weeks (I included the Ayumi album closest in release date to Hikki's albums):

First Love - 2,026,870 - - - - A Song for XX - 548,210
Distance - 3,002,720 - - - - - Duty - 1,682,760
DEEP RIVER - 2,350,170 - - - Rainbow - 1,016,482
ULTRA BLUE - 500,317 - - - - Secret - 386,280
HEART STATION - 480,081 - - Guilty - 202,000

^ And they call Ayu the queen of j-pop...Well not that it bothers me cuz Ayu is my most favorite singer, but I think we know who overall who does better in the sales department.

Tom Punks 6th June 2008 05:33 AM

^ But Ayu has a totally different image. She's like... a diva. Calling Utada the queen would seem kind of awkward because she's just not queen-like at all. She's very natural and whateverelseIcan'tthinkofthewordfor. :yes

Melon Panda 6th June 2008 05:39 AM

Agreed - Ayumi is an all-around queen, whereas Utada is a sales queen. While competition between their albums would be interesting, I'm afraid that Ayumi will lose to Utada. The previous competition helped Ayumi's status and reputation, but another one will probably hurt it.

CHE.R.RY 6th June 2008 05:41 AM

^ Yeah that makes sense, I guess. But when it comes to sales...lol that's a whole other story.

Yepp, I totally agree. Ayumi has the image of a queen or empress, and while her sales or popularity may not be as great, she definitely fits the part. Hikki is just the cool girl next door who writes her own songs and makes cool music, but isn't glam or diva at all.

Luv ~Venus~ 6th June 2008 06:34 AM

Ugh, I hate it when her fans call her that though. =/ I mean in a "shove-it-in-ur-face-way". Like, Ayu got #1 in something and her fans where like, "Ayu's the queen" 'Ayu's the empress" "No one can beat her" "She's the best j-pop artist ever"...and all that other garbage. It seems she's a queen/empress/wuteva when ever she wins or doing good in something. =/

Tom Punks 6th June 2008 06:38 AM

^ Well, really, no one CAN be Ayu. But no one can be Utada either. :rolleyes It's just that they're two entirely different artists. Ayu fits the image of j-pop queen, but Utada's achievements are definitely not something to take lightly, even next to Ayu. :yes

Luv ~Venus~ 6th June 2008 06:51 AM

^I edited my post when u posted that. :laugh

I mean it's okay that they call her that but don't just constantly repeat it. I rarely hear people call Hikki a queen or anything like that. I think the only queen I've heard Hikkians say was "She is the PV queen!" lol and that was based off the Kazzy Trilogy. :lmfao

Well, it's all relative. And Ayumi is the queen, but don't forget that queens today have no power or use in most countries :laugh Ayumi can be the powerless queen, and Hikki can be the Prime Minister or President!

Meat Pao 6th June 2008 07:01 AM

^ LOL that sorta makes sense!

Wow....just wow! O_O That, my friend, is sooooo true that it deserves to be quoted. Awesome, just awesome words that were spoke people! :clapclap

:laugh @ Hikki being Prime Minister tho! XD

dddaiyamondo 6th June 2008 07:04 AM

:laugh I'm glad you all enjoyed my analogy!

DestinyWishes 6th June 2008 07:09 AM

Lol, Hikki as a prime minister or president. :laugh I wouldn't mind that happening at all!

bluegie 6th June 2008 09:55 AM

Oh I hope she won't be either of them.. I hate my prime minister, and I hate most of the presidents :P.

Hikki is always called Heisei Songtress anywayz.. :P. I dun think ayu can be hikki or vice versa. Hikki is the selling monster, while ayu is sorta like a release machine (esp back in the old days). If you compare ayu sales w/ hikki, it obvious that hikki has way better selling power on average. But there are other things that make ayu on par with hikki since A BEST, and you must agree that not another female artist in this era (let's say, between 1999 - now) can compare with ayu or hikki.
