She's such a flawless human being! I love the way she looks and I cannot wait to see Helter Skelter!

Though I do think that evolution sounds completely different than the rest on that album lol. But I'm glad its incorporated.

When will we get subs for this movie, seen the fact that in 2 days it will air in the theaters and such. I think that it would take another 2 days for someone to illegally record it in the theatre, and that it would take another 4 days for someone to sub it... That is if there is someone willing to sub this for us. OH GOD THE WAIT

isn't there any CM for this movie?

I wonder why they chose evolution if the score sounds so different...

Do they have to be similar? haha The score is unique for a reason, and evolution was chosen for artistic purposes. They don't have to be similar.

my question is what does it bring to the movie?
I havent read the manga so i might be missing something, but from what I have read the song just doesnt fit.
And usually when it comes to music they try to fit to a theme.
Thats why a lot of soundtracks are INSPIRED from the movie and the OST is made for the movie...
evolution is neither of those.

YUKARI 12th July 2012 05:29 PM

CM made me very excited! I wonder, if they begin showing it tomorrow, then when will it end? I want to watch it, but I'll be in Tokyo only on July 31 (if everything goes flawless)...

It has to do more with AYU then the song itself. Its about the fact that its one of the most famous songs by one of the most famous pop idol. Its a movie about a woman surviving the business in Tokyo, as Ayu has (this was stated in the interview with the director.)It mirrors the theme of fame. So it fits perfectly.

YUKARI 12th July 2012 06:01 PM

as I see, evolution fits perfectly. when I started to watch the trailer and Erika appeared and all those magazines "deru zasshi deru zasshi", I suddenly thought this resembles ayu in 2001 when A BEST was released and she appeard on the covers of 40+ mags. kinda made me feel like Ririka's character is inspired by ayu.

So its not really the song, but what was going on at the time that the song was released??
So say if Ayumi released Born to Be... around that time you think they would of picked that song too, because it was what ayumi released during that time in her career...

Interesting thought process. So i wonder if they are trying to make illusions to ayumi throughtout the movie?
Ill have to read the manga.

Evolution7/4 12th July 2012 06:32 PM

^No I mean its just a popular song, you know? Japanese will know instantly who sings it and who the song is. Im trying to find the interview with the director. The manga was written before Ayu was successful, but the movie will probably make allusions to Ayu, or more specifically, allusions to a big star. Like it could be seen as Ayu, Namie, and big star who is glamorous. But being in Japan it will probably be closest to Ayu

The film kinda sounds like the character could be ayu and evolution is one of her signature songs

Helter Skelter features a beautiful model, Ririko, whose body underwent head-to-toe cosmetic surgery, and illustrates the accelerating derailment of her success. Years and yens of plastic surgery turned top celebrity Ririko into a beauty icon. However, as her body starts to show signs of deterioration, she descends into despair and becomes recklessly determined to make other people's lives as miserable as hers. In addition, Ririko must also face the appearance of a younger and fresher face at her modelling agency, the engagement of her rich lover, and constantly living up to the pressure of her stage mom, who is also her manager

I guess it could make sense if they make illusions to Ayumi, but It still just seems random to pick that song...
That song isn;t even really her number one hit... I thought that was seasons?
Its is a very popular song and MY number 1 ayumi song, but... I don't know... I write scripts and to pick that song just seems random to me.

you're so right!

^evolution is Ayu's number 1 up-beat song and one of many signature songs towards the public. It isn't hard to find parodies based on the evolution PV and that video outfit is among her most iconic... The song wasn't used to open her first Asia Tour for no reason, and it isn't on every tour and CDL she did since 2001 for no reason either.

It was chose because of it's context... Among the songs that represent Ayu the most (M, SEASON, Boys & Girls, etc), this one fits the theme of the movie the most, it represents the peak of Ayu's career and her most aclaimed album to date, the period where she was everywhere everytime, and it's video deals with Ayu's relationship with her fame.

They could go for a more obvious choice (or ask for a whole new song)... But not always the most obvious choice is also the most powerful.

TeamAyu2004 12th July 2012 07:57 PM

All of that makes sense, yes, but only if they make illusions to ayumi.
As of right now its random and guesses thats all im saying.

And wasn't Duty a better selling album? (and darker which for me fits more to what I have been told about the manga)

Dont get me wrong, I think her album, I am is the top and best of her career. The singles were flawless the music was amazing, the remixes pure gold...

Duty sold better, but I am... spammed more big hits... Dearest, evolution and M for example are among her most iconic and remembered songs... Duty has SEASONS, but even if the other singles are also hits, they aren't on the same level. It's hard to know if I am... sold less than Duty because people liked it more, or just because 2001 was the year the music industry started declining.

LOVEppears 8 singles sold 4,752,200 copies
What means 594,025 copies per single.

Duty 5 singles sold 3,355,730 copies
What means 671,146 copies per single.

I am... 8 singles sold 5,762,770 copies
What means 720,346 copies per single.

About Duty being darker... it is, but the manga is more ironic and sarcastic than just sad and dark.

Sorry to be nitpicky, but I think you mean allusions. An illusion is something that is not real, an allusion is a subtle reference toward something/someone.
And I do think "evolution" fits thematically, a little bit. A new, miraculous age, reality tricking you, moving forward... It's not very direct, but it does fit nicely with the theme of the entertainment industry's constant search for the perfect beauty, the sacrifices the character makes because of the pressure society puts on her, and how we constantly evolve trying to fit into a reality that in fact may not be completely true.
I do not know how much sense I'm making right now, but I do think "evolution" is a good song for this movie.

Here is the photo of the dress on display in the Shinjuku piccadily theatre!

tokyoxjapanxfan 13th July 2012 06:51 AM

I think it definitely has already made allusions to Ayu just in the CM. The scene with Ririko on all the magazine covers is most definitely reminiscent to A BEST-era Ayu.

To my knowledge, there hasn't been another time with another idol having 40+ covers out at the same time...

TeamAyu2004 13th July 2012 07:05 AM

holy crap! 40?!?!
this is like life mimicking art... lol
