Day 22: A song that moves you forward
walking proud. Definitely. I love that song so much, it's one of my all time favourites and I cried when I saw her perform it live last year at A^3. The arrangement of that song is so beautiful and how the song develops is brilliant. Her voice is so soft, then there is this long instrumental break, at almost four minutes the instrumental gets softer and you almost only hear her voice and the piano and then it feels as if she cries her heart out during the last chorus. I always tear up during that part. Also, I think the song has one of the most sincere lyrics she ever wrote and are one of her strongest, too. I love it's message that even if life is hard and you try ro run away from reality, you have to face it and you can find the strenght to go forward, especially because surely there is someone having your back and for whom you have to go forward so that you can reach that person. |
Walking Proud deserves so much more love than it gets (Winding Road too, for that matter). But if you don't get emotional during the AT 2005 My Story performance of Walking Proud, you have no heart.

@Chibi-Chan, that is the best description about how magical this song is. I can't wait until Day 27/28, because I "planned" this song exactly for the reasons you just wrote here.
For Day 23 - A Song for ×× "030213 Session #2" Why? Because this is the masterpiece imo. If you want to introduce Ayumi Hamasaki to a new listener, well - with this song, you have nailed it. I picked this version over the original album version, only because I prefer her voice much more. |

This is a truely underrated gem in her discography and more people should listen to this beautiful work or Art. Especially unser northern lights, then this song becomes even more beautiful |

Breakdown - Song about how to stay strong no matter what, helped me during stressful and harsh times. Also it is striking how this song talks about disillusionment of life, peeling layers after layers to reach that truth, what makes you....you, who you really are underneath. Lyrics are beautiful in this song. |
I also love walking proud, it’s one of her best. It does makes me move forward, but for crying lol
Day 23: decision. Simply badass. The Ayu from 2007 rocks. Everything from that song, from her voice, to the lyrics, melody and even the PV are flawless. |

One of the reasons that I love ayu is that many of her songs have quite vague lyrics, so you can interpret them in various ways, so I guess that there are many songs that fit this category. One of the first tracks that come to mind is Free & Easy. Day 21 - A song you like with a flower in the title FLOWER definitely. I was blown away when I first heard this track as I always wanted this kind of "ethnic" rock type of track from ayu. Day 22 - A song that moves you forward Even though Step by step is not one of my favourite tracks or a very unique one in her discography, it has this uplifting and hopeful energy that I really appreciate Day 23 - A song you think everybody should listen to BRILLANTE is one of the tracks that comes to mind when thinking of a special listening experience, so I'd definitely like for lots of people to hear it. |
I'm glad to see love for winding road, it really deserves more of it than it usually gets! And yes to all the praise of Walking Proud.

I don't know another song that can match or recreate the atmosphere of Dolls; the melody, production, and Ayu's voice and performance come together and create magic. And I want to mention Ayu's performance especially: she hits many levels of intensity and emotion (quiet and contemplative in the beginning, increasing in intensity in the pre-chorus, airy and otherworldly in the chorus, declarative and urgent after the key change, and joyful at the very end) and the production always matches her perfectly, the way the song builds and releases tension is masterful. 23 - my name's WOMEN i think this song defines ayu's music for me as a complete picture, because it might sound generic pop song but there's an actual meaning in the lyrics instead of just singing "we are women we are beautiful" |

Another hard one, because I wouldn't necessarily just choose my favorite song(s) here, but rather ones that I think could open up the Ayu-verse to people. I might go with Evolution here. I know it's a super obvious answer, but it's also signature Ayu and still sounds fresh, even 19 years later. Honestly, she could re-release I Am... right now and it would sound more contemporary than some of her more recent albums. |

Because Ayu is so versatile, I don't think there is the "ONE" Ayu song everyone should listen to. But if I want to "promote" Ayu to my Japanese friends, I always play (or sing at karaoke) evolution and everyone loves it. ;) |
Day 24: free & easy. One of her most unique pieces of work. I simply love this song. I don’t know if Ayu wrote this song with any spiritual meaning in mind (the lyrics plus the whole aesthetics at that time made me think so).
