Taiwan's top 5 best-selling albums of 2014!

Physical sales suck so much in Taiwan now o_O

Anyway, Jolin ranks #4 and remains the best-selling female singer with 38,000 copies sold!

1. Mayday - The Best of 1999-2013 100,000 (12/30/2013)
2. Jay Chou - Aiyo, Not Bad 80,000 (12/26/2014)
3. JJ Lin - Genesis 40,000 (12/27/2014)
4. Jolin Tsai - PLAY 38,000 (11/15/2014)
5. Stefanie Sun - Kepler 36,000 (02/27/2014)

If you are interested, according to the source, A-Mei sold more than 20,000 copies of Faces of Paranoia (07/02/2014). Sales are under 20,000 for Rainie Yang (A Tale of Two Rainie 12/12/2014), Aaron Yan (DRAMA 05/30/2014 and CUT 06/27/2014), SpeXial (Break it down 06/12/2014), Pets Tseng (I'm Pets 12/17/2014) and Bii (Action Bii 12/19/2014).
Elva Hsiao, Wilber Pan or Angela Chang are not even mentioned...

If you were expecting Jolin to sell way more (I have to admit that I almost had a heart attack seeing how physical sales sucked overall this year), actually it's not that bad in the end since she sold more than big female singers like A-Mei, Stefanie Sun and Elva Hsiao.
Bad times by the way for C-Pop "divas" :/ They sold more poorly than usual.

And right now in Taiwan Mayday and JJ Lin are like at the peak of their popularity. JJ Lin sold 40,000 copies in only 4 days and in 2013 he sold 78,000 copies in like 9 months...
Jay remains very popular as well and his marriage also gave him even more media coverage. I've also been told that unlike Jolin he has a huge fanbase in China and some of them ordered the Taiwanese version of his album to increase his sales.

As you can see, Taiwan's physical sales are getting lower and lower every year... When you look at this ranking, after Mayday and Jay, sales are dropping drastically to only 40,000 copies. No one buys albums anymore. A lot of C-Pop stars actually released a new album this year and except for JJ Lin, Jay, Jolin and Stefanie no one managed to get to 30,000 copies sold. That's sad >_<
And the fact that Jolin's peak has passed since Agent J/Butterfly and that she's facing competition with K-Pop doesn't help either.
To be honest I was expecting 50,000 copies... I've been too optimistic on this one.

Wow those sales are bad xD But seeing see ranked #4 and when you see the sales of the other artists it's not bad at all.

What about digital sales? Do people buy her album online (iTunes)?

The site chinatimes only contacted some record retailers it seems but they didn't say who...
Nothing concerning digital sales.
Yep, they do. PLAY actually charted well on iTunes in the first weeks of release and the album got #1 two months in a row (November & December) on KKBOX Taiwan.
I don't check sites like omusic or mymusic so I can't say how well she charted there.

How many PVs are left?

maddy1111 29th January 2015 07:48 AM

3 MVs: I'm Not Yours (feat. Namie Amuro), 自愛自受 I Love I Embrace, and Miss Trouble.
It will be most probably released in that order every two weeks.

Heavenly 29th January 2015 08:41 PM

I'm so craving for the I love, I embrace PV ^.^"
I'm not yours too, but more to see the final result, and because of Namie, than the actual music, which I don't find special.
And Miss Trouble... well... No comment, I don't like it much.

More info about the MV plot:
This MV has been inspired by a story from the volume 296 of The Extensive Records of the Taiping Era called "The Three Illusions".
In this MV Namie and Jolin are sisters who own a hotel. No one knows where their wealth or donkeys might come from...

Quote:

Basically in the 3 Illusions, a woman called San Niangzi owns a hotel. She enchants wooden puppets at night which do all kind of tasks for her. She also turns men into donkeys with cursed biscuits. But one day a man saw right through her and tricked her into eating one of her own biscuits, so she turned into a donkey herself... He rode her for 4 years before meeting an old man who told him that it was enough. The old man turned her back into her true form. San Niangzi thanked him, and left. No one ever heard of her ever again.

PLAY repackage to be released on February 6th! It will contain a DVD with 9 MVs and a 2015 Calendar.

It seems that in the end PLAY sold 63,837 copies in 2014... Warner got these sales certified by a lawyer. To date 75,000 copies have been sold in Taiwan.
