Maybe even 1080p?

Yukitora 4th November 2011 03:15 PM

^The widescreen versions of Seinfeld, on the other hand, are zoomed up in order to achieve the 16:9 frame, thus losing both information and sacrificing quality. Lets hope avex doesn't do that to ayu's PV. Btw, neither Seinfeld nor Friends has been released on blu-ray.

4:3 is fine on blu-ray. Look at the earlier Disney films (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi). There is nothing wrong with keeping the director's intended aspect ratio, he did after all film them for full-screen televisions. To do otherwise would be to distort his work (imagine cropping or widening the Mona Lisa because it didn't fit your pre-made picture frame).

True, but some 4:3 shows have been remastered and released on blu-ray in HD 16:9 format. So there's a way to do this. Seinfeld and Friends come to mind.

eg. just researched. Friends was shot on a "35mm film" (used for movies) but was mastered to a 4:3 frame (the norm at the time of the shows release). But the 35mm film has more information than a 4:3 frame, the aspect ratio of the film is actually widescreen. So remastering the film to widescreen HD was possible. So it all depends on what the source of the video is.

Given they're bothering with a blu-ray release, I'm thinking they have a lot of her videos filmed on sources where at least it can be remastered to 720p.

The thing is if you KNOW it will be released in 4:3 you do the image composition, lighting, special effects and so on for 4:3, it will look off when you see the "full" image. The composition won't be as good, there will be areas with wrong lighting because they were not supposed to be in the finished video and so on...
So if that's the case for any of Ayumi's videos(I doubt it since 16:9 wasn't that weird for music TV back then) they probably shot them directly 4:3.
When recording on film you usually crop it out for 4:3, however that does not mean the "full" ratio is better, it usually is much worse because it wasn't intended that way. I'd prefer her keeping 4:3 videos in 4:3 instead of going back to the full ratio and ****ing up the image compositions, since they are very good in some Ayumi videos.

@perfectodub are you sure they recorded on 24mm and not 35mm? A full-frame sensor seems like a much better idea for professional recordings. But it doesn't matter really since both can give you crystal clear 1080i when mastered correctly. In theory 35mm film can go up to about 10 megapixels while full HD has roughly 2 megapixels.

so,at the end of the day,it is depends on the video editor who edited the PVs with special effect and animation edit them in 16:9 ratio or 4:3 ratio.

isthisLOL? 4th November 2011 04:41 PM

Pretty much. It all depends on who edited the videos and how they were edited. We can't know if we get true HD or upscales, we can't know if 4:3 videos will be extended, cropped or left 4:3.

title156 4th November 2011 05:07 PM

I also wonder about some PVs that was shot in 16:9 but release in 4:3 (I don't know how to explain) like GREEN (Days was shot and release in 16:9 while GREEN is shot in 16:9 but release in 4:3 with black bar on the top & bottom), crossroad (while the rest of Love songs was presented in 16:9), all of RnRC album track PVs (while single track was presented in 16:9). What the point of not releasing those in widecreen?
And if the blu-ray has them with original ratio (have black bar on the top & bottom) and made them fit 16:9 TV (put black bar on the right & left), it's gonna be awful! I hope they will put real HD 16:9 of those videos in blu-ray.

sorry for my English

The only way we'll really know what is TrueHD and what isn't is when we see it. Hopefully we're in for a surprise, though if a lot of them were in HD... we'd have gotten it in the description.

They are probably still in the process of giving the source data the HD treatment, maybe they don't know how many will end up true HD yet? It's a possiblity.
Though avex will probably treat us to like 10 HD PVs and a whole lot of SD.

this debate about the quality is boring. we'll just have to wait and see.

my wishlist for this release: (still can't believe i ordered the blu ray limited edition!)

-Duty PV
-maybe the full PVs for vogue, Far away, and SEASONS
-PV for HANABI (although I know it will never happen)

I just need there to be SOMETHING on here that justifies me spending $245 on PVs I already own on DVD!

isthisLOL? 5th November 2011 01:20 AM

Were full versions of the trilogy even shot?

Ayufan11 5th November 2011 02:07 AM

Lol, some people are interested in buying the blu-ray for the quality! :P I hope we get a fair share of HD and SD and not most SD though... Hopefully Avex will unveil more specs soon?

Weren't they all shot at the same time as a 'trilogy' to begin with? I don't think full individual versions exist.

This Duty "PV" discussion is such nonsense. That is not a PV, it's footage from the pachinko game set to Duty, not a PV for the song.

truehappiness 5th November 2011 05:26 AM

I wish they'd put the full CM version at least (the 30 second Tu-ka CM).

Well, Ayu is singing the song in the footage, and I'd love to see it in HD, so I hope they do include it as a special version or something. I can't wait to see all of this special rare footage!

Why would Avex release such a thing in Blu-ray if it was to put some stuff in SD, honestly, just think about it for a second. If they opted for the blu-ray it's because they will remaster stuff to be all full HD, what's the point otherwise?
Her earliest PV dates from 1998, there are movies being release in blu that date as early as 1920 and they got remastered and look good (given the source).
Let's be patient and wait to see what avex will tell us. I'm going for full hd on all PVs but if you don't have such faith, wait and see.

brener 5th November 2011 09:33 AM

they said something about never released stuff... i hope those are pv's!!

toniayu 5th November 2011 10:56 AM

If she isn't going to release anything this christmas, probably i'll buy it.But i think she is going to release the photobook and maybe even a single/album...

brener 5th November 2011 02:20 PM

it would have been already announced by this time... forget it. no new single/album this year...

yukito 5th November 2011 02:22 PM

I rather she takes some time before releasing anything. I didn't like Five too much and rather indulge in this compilation.
