Ah, okay. I've only been interested enough in Oricon to check the daily charts since recently, so I thought it was a common occurrence. Thanks for the heads up : P

And all of these sales without TV live performances! Go Ayu!

Who knows why not TV promotion?

As she said; She simply didn't have the time. =)

In Oricon Year 2010 it did.

spanishfan 26th July 2010 09:59 PM

^ well, we know even if a CD does not chart anymore doesn't mean it's sales are 0 but lower than the CD in 200 or 300 position. It's like if you buy now A Song for XX, it won't chart but it have sales.
That's why Oricon numbers are always lower than "official" numbers.

Bigtop 26th July 2010 10:45 PM

Under the full moon there, sales for MOON/blossom sure is still strong...

I never knew that, so they do keep track of the numbers for years after it's released...

I think 100k is possible ^^

Well, basically ...

Let's say an album has sold 98k. It then disappears from the top 200. It's obviously still selling, just not enough to appear in the chart. Then, a couple of weeks later, there is a surge of sales because of a new single or a tour, or whatever. The album sells another 500 copies and reappears on position 190. Oricon will then count the amount of copies sold as 98.500, disregarding any sales the album made while NOT in the top 200.

They do keep track of these numbers, but they don't release 'em to the public :/

kagami 27th July 2010 08:38 AM

That's really weird. If they know them why not report them? It is Oricon's purpose after all.

I think you're mistaken there ; P. Oricon is a company, their purpose is to make profit. This way, they can offer their DELUXE services (AKA, for example, complete sales information) to companies who will gladly pay tens of thousands of dollars a year for such data.

njanjayrp 27th July 2010 10:38 AM

Oricon doesn't even cover all the stores in Japan and that alone means the data isn't completely accurate and while 6 years ago releases out of top 100 sold a few thousands, now days when they barely sell a few copies, counting those wouldn't change the numbers drastically.

AyuGAME 27th July 2010 11:00 AM

i just want to believe that this single can get 100k
although the chance is getting smaller, maybe now is just about 50% possibility that this single still can get 100k...

i hope it will be like this
3rd week - 7k (total 90k)
4th week - 3.5k (total 93.5k)
5th week - 2k (total 95.5k)
6th week - 1.5k (total 97k)
7th week - 1k (total 98k)
8th week - 1k (total 99k)
9th week - 0.5k (total 99.5k)
10th week - 0.5k (total 100k)
stop charting...YAY 100k!!!

crossing my fingers..hahaha

i'm guessing releasing 2 live concert dvds in a year is too much for any ayu fan (shes not in her peak anymore and japan is still suffering from the economic crisis), and japanese press dvds aren't cheap, if you compare to overseas press. Also alot of people download too, so the sales won't be that high.

Interesting xD I only thought they offer complete lists to Oricon subscribers, cuz regular users can't see more than top 10.

Actually some DVDs from her peak-close to peak era sold miserably even compared to CDL 09-10 (like AT 2002 for example).

AyuGAME 28th July 2010 01:19 AM

^yeah...i think her dvd sales is always so steady...and her fans know that she will release 2 dvd per year...so it's weird that CDL 09-10 not get a good sales, because usually her CDL sold more than her AT tour dvd

chloeM 28th July 2010 06:11 AM

well that's a remarkable result,~

rakeru 28th July 2010 06:38 AM

It hasn't even been THAT long since AT 09 was released, though. I wonder how many people routinely spend that much money on concert DVDs, of all things.

truehappiness 28th July 2010 08:14 AM

AT09 was aided by the Rock'n'Roll Circus bundle, I guess... though she usually ends up totaling out between 60-70k in the long run on average, I think.

AT02 was bundled with COMPLETE LIVE BOX, so sales from both ST02 and AT02 were low due to people buying a set of 3/4 DVDs instead of just one for the price of two[?] DVDs.

adantatu2 28th July 2010 08:20 PM

there are a lot of new releases, and maybe she can appear on the top 15

AngelSenshi 28th July 2010 08:31 PM

^ I think it could make a brief appearance in the top 10 again... Hmm we'll have to wait and see :yes

AyumiAi 29th July 2010 12:49 AM

People are saying that Ayumi Hamasaki's career is dying, yet Namie Amuro, who had a huge revival in popularity only sold 23,000 copies with her new single first day, while Ayumi sold 35,000, so i would say Ayumi's career is still kicking and owning! :)

TITANIC 29th July 2010 01:59 AM

^ thats right, its pretty shocking to see how awful Namie's sales is. it has 2 PVs while ayu only have 1 and only sold 23K on 1st day. as usual her sales always steady compared Ayu.

That we won't know for another few hours. Don't forget that WILD/Dr. couldn't outsell Rule/Sparkle ^^ Namie doesn't have such strong FAN base as Ayu does.

Nackar_91 29th July 2010 09:24 AM

If people want an example of a career that's over, go look at Aoyama Thelma. I'm a fan of her myself, but that's a pretty sad story.

Ayu's career isn't over until no one cares anymore and she can't sell enough to enter the top 30. And even then it isn't over until she wants it to be over.

Zeke. 29th July 2010 09:41 AM

Yeah, Namie was more of the "IT" girl for a short period. Ayu's fanbase is where it's at yet.

AngelSenshi 29th July 2010 09:53 AM

^ Agreed!

Whether sales in Japan are what they used to be or not, it's clear that Ayu still has a great amount of reigning power otherwise she wouldn't have made it this far, or her singles wouldn't be selling this well. I mean this single has no promotion whatsoever, especially since the tour itself isn't exactly considered promotion for the single (but I suppose it does help somewhat) yet some artists who consistently get promotion can't quite get the sales that she gets.

She's still well-loved, well-supported and for me she's jsut proof that emotions and honesty in music sells well regardless of the era.

I don't think Japanese listeners care if she sells or top the charts as much as we do in here lol

I strongly believe she will keep selling until the day she stops producing new music, and even after that for sure!! :) She is one of the biggest icons in Japanese music history, and she will always be :D

AngelSenshi 29th July 2010 10:12 AM

^ Yeah, the Japanese when listening to her and stuff really don't bother with the charts and rankings and stuff, I think they just continue to support her and that's brilliant. I don't entirely care about the sales either, I'm most happy that Ayu is releasing music, still performing, things like that; if she stopped doing well on the chart it wouldn't change how I felt about her. But she's got a streak going and that's a cool thing to have; I find it awesome and so I definitely support it and want her to continue to do well.

She is definitely one of the biggest things in Japanese pop music history; she'll keep doing well as long as she keeps working, and even after that.

Nackar_91 29th July 2010 11:14 AM

Casual listeners will always have a different approach than the fans do ; ).

Take Mariah Carey. I'm not a fan. When I hear a song I like, I just go download the song and enjoy it, I don't give a bazeez whether or not it reaches no. 1 or no. 190. I just like the song. The Mariah Carey fans however will be obsessing over its chart position.

It's just the natural cycle of life! XD
