Still I think considering it's part of a pachinko machine it's ok, but compared to proper PVs it's...erm...

I know what you mean. I'm far from being an expert or something esle myself. Yet I'm an arts student (animation) and have a little (very little) "background". And things like this PV are just... No.

But as you said, it really fits the pachinko thing. Look at this machine with all those colorful plastic diamonds and so on... It's pretty japanese actually haha!

Haha!
The anime part is just epic. I mean, I laughed through the whole thing! Ayu jumping so as to save one of her dancer, being trapped between life and death...!

I know that I've seen screenshots from it before but I never knew where it was from D:
Man, how did I miss this?

Love it! Thanks for sharing ^^

Kazeyomi 4th October 2011 01:09 AM

Just seen the Anime video. And.. what? Is she a bricklayer now? :laugh
Actually it's well made and not so cheap as I thought (by what I can see from the video). And wow Shu-ya looks so bishounen :roflmao.

You're going to have to explain, because I have background in making music videos and I have to say this is better then most of her PV's. Some of the animation is cheesy, yes, but as for telling a story, which most MV's/PV's are suppose to do (besides the ones that are just "artiste"), this ones does it very well.

As for the other comments about Ayu, yes. She looks amazing at the beginning... I don't understand why she doesn't wear her hair long all the time, she looks so much better to me!

RealLight 4th October 2011 01:12 AM

Loved the PV, I wish that this same 'technology' was used for progress PV -_-

and I felt so sorry for Subaru :weep lol

Well... the fact the animation is telling the story doesn't makes it good...

And I found the whole concept and story to be pretty cheesy, so, it's not like i would love it with an amazing animation anyway... it looks like a random anime opening...

And I really hate to see ayu as a damsel in distress... It goes against her lyrics, the image the portrays most of the time and her performances...

adantatu2 4th October 2011 05:28 AM

the anime is so dramatic, XD
at least ayu looks pretty well on anime

Jester 4th October 2011 06:08 AM

Avex should release DVD/Blu-ray A PACHINKO VIDEO COLLECTION LOL!

PS. I don't know why people call a simple video is a cheap, You want she makes every videos with million budget? and I think progress can told the meaning very well and I really like it. I don't understand why people are so serious.

sesshy 4th October 2011 06:10 AM

I thought the PV was interesting. But some reason doesn't really match Duty to me. It felt Final Fantasy-ish to me. :laugh I love fantasy stuff.

Tony G 4th October 2011 06:19 AM

God, so much whingeing. Yes its cheesy, but perfect for the pachinko machine and really not that bad of a PV if you don't think about how cheap it was to make. She's not going to splash out on some lavish PV that probably won't ever be officially released.

The videogame characters don't appeal to me. The PV seems so cheap and it doesn't even fit the song that much... But she does look awesome in the beginning though.

There is an alternate full version PV of progress:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SClh6...bx5HSg&index=2

And you have a ton of ****load of AMV's on Youtube that fit especially well with the song.

Pretty much this. I think there's a problem in this thread of conflating "bad design" or bad direction with "cheap effects." I personally didn't like the video that much, but it's a lot better than her other PVs in terms of narrative cohesion. Her formal PVs may be more expensive and can afford better looking visual effects, but that doesn't mean they are implemented effectively. For awhile I've felt that her biggest PVs ("Mirrorcle World" especially) have comprised of little more than disjointed set pieces. This was a nice change in that respect.

Really, the whole thread of "people who like the video don't understand ~design" needs to stop. Give your fellow fans some credit; some people value the narrative--or maybe even just the narrative possibilities promised by Ayu stepping into the fantasy/action realm--over the quality of the effects themselves. And other people just like it without understanding or caring why. That's ok, too.

THAT'S SO TRUE!
i personally like the video because i think it's cool to have ayu in a game-like video clip to see. it'd be great if she could ever make something like this on her next release's PV.

it's NOT even the official Duty PV.

Actually, I feel that the PV does go really well with the lyrics in Duty. Duty's lyrics sing about people searching for "something" which they have in them all along, and how she as a diva has lost that "something" and that she trusts "you" will be able to find it for her. At least that's how I interpret the lyrics. But I find that it really fits the PV's storyline, like how ayu is shown as a diva in the beginning, then after her reflection morphs into the monster, she becomes the nun trapped and awaiting rescue. The dark angels and gothic setting also fits the song's dark mood. :yes

Did a translation of the lyrics, maybe the PV will make more sense when watched together with lyrics. ;)

Quote:

The thing which everyone desires and is searching for,
“it” exists sometime in the future.
You and I, that’s what we believe.
But, how many people actually realize
that “it” may actually exist in the past?
I can’t even guess

Yes, I saw the end of an era
With my own eyes
But I didn’t want to know
That it will be my turn next

Yes, I’ll try to say it a little more plainly
“It” just helps us to connect
And line up our memories
But if so, that means that you and I,
we all already have “it”?
Please understand that

Yes, I saw the end of an era
With my own eyes
And, in truth, I already know
That it will be my turn next

You will find “it”, because you are you
You will find “it”, because you are you
I believe it, I’ll bet on it

Yes, I saw the end of an era
With my own eyes
But I didn’t want to know
That it will be my turn next

TeamAyu2004 4th October 2011 05:26 PM

^ i agree.
I felt like it fit very well and it was pretty well done. (Of course from the quality of the video it looks kinda cheap) I would like to see a full HD version before saying anything about the "effects"
But the video tells a wonderful story that fits the song very nicely.

SpiceSquad! 4th October 2011 06:13 PM

so this video si specially made for ayu panchiko game? not badd!! infact its a great thing!

isthisLOL? 4th October 2011 08:15 PM

Lol at people thinking anyone actually dislikes it because the CGI looks cheap...I couldn't care less for the CGI budget as it IS a low budget production. For that the CGI is fine.
I dislike it because it looks like random scenes thrown together for an anime or game opening, is incredibly cheesy and not a single shot really struck me as great. I much prefer a "boring" video without story as long as it's either well-directed or features an interesting idea - or both.

reixminako 4th October 2011 10:49 PM

I'm really glad Ayu made this :). It doesn't have to be perfect for it to be beautiful...

I laugh at the fact that people will ALWAYS have selfish and negative things to say, regardless of what she does (even her fans). Some people are never satisfied, even when Ayu's working herself to death to produce something nice for the fans. Ah well...I still love it :).

+1

I was trying to think of a way to say this, but you said it perfectly :)

Mintkisses 5th October 2011 01:38 AM

A music video doesn't need a million dollar budget to be enjoyed or appreciated. It was different, and I loved it. Ayu looked gorgeous and it had an actual story line. I'm completely satisfied with watching this then watching what could have been a diaster.

it was made specially for PACHINKO.. thats why it looks like a games.

pachinko is a gaming console right?

tokyoxjapanxfan 5th October 2011 05:18 AM

^ It's the only way Japanese people can legally gamble in Japan. In shape it's more like a slot machine, but you actually turn a dial and control the constant movement of these little metal balls.

You have to try to get them to fall into a certain spot and once you find a good spot for the dial, you just hold it there while occasionally mashing some buttons, depending on the machine, to interact with the story line.

It's really loud and obnoxious haha.

So this video is like a "stage" that you can reach by hitting certain areas or reaching a certain amount of points or what have you.

ah, for me, "cheap" and "cheesy" effects are (colloquially) one of the same. My bad.

I do find it funny that you say you dislike the video for being "random scenes thrown together" when that's the exact problem on which I thought "Duty" improved lol. Different strokes, I guess.

(Or a sign that I wasted my youth playing JRPGs, so this kind of nonsense makes total narrative sense to me. There's a scary thought.)

asagarichan 5th October 2011 08:51 AM

Thank you! Very interesting clip!

isthisLOL? 6th October 2011 06:05 PM

I said more than once, for a pachinko video it is VERY good. But that's all it is: a good pachinko video.

As a PV it is bad, which is why the "omg Ayu's last PVs should have been like this!!!" is ridiculous

@ reixminako
You realize that most people disliking this have liked most of her latest releases? I don't think a single person that expressed dislike in this thread is some kind of "hater" going around talking how this and that sucks. There are those on AHS but I don't think I've read such a posting in this thread.
I personally think Love Songs is by far Ayu's best album and FIVE is better than some of the albums many fans love so much. RnRC Tour and CDL1011 are amongst my favorite Ayu concerts, I think her vocals now are - together with maybe 2003 - the best she's ever had and can't wait to see PoM. This Duty video is the first thing Ayu did I really disliked in years - and I don't even dislike it. What really annoys me are the fans acting like it's more than just a pachinko video, like it's "oh so good".

MissElin_ 6th October 2011 07:17 PM

^I see your point and it's all good to think and like whatever you want. :) And it's great to hear that you love the Love Songs album cuz I found myself quite so-so about it. :/ But I agree, R'n'RC are probably my fav Ayu concert ever!

But, in fact there are some people who actually think that even for a normal PV this is a good video. And they are allowed to think that. Now, I know that nobody didn't allow anyone not to think or like whatever they wanted to but I did notice some unnecessary comments (like "ppl who don't know that much about design are loving this, rolling eyes" e.t.c.) that kind of makes a fool out of the people who actually enjoyed this video. That is quite a typical master suppression technique and that is what people are reacting of here. People will always give out their oppinions in this forum, it's what this place is for, but there is no need to ridicule anyones oppinion.

dream_ayumix 6th October 2011 08:07 PM

REALLY???

R_Hikki 7th October 2011 12:46 AM

Watching the video surprised and confused the hell out of me.

I don't agree with this at all...

love in music 7th October 2011 03:20 AM

i don't think it's that great, with a song like Duty it deserves the best of the best.
but it's just a panchiko video so i don't really care and she looks good

TeddyGrahams 7th October 2011 04:05 AM

I thought it was pure awesomeness. I really love the first part where she was singing to herself in the mirror. That look is so days esque era.

Ah, well sadly that's just your opinion. This video is pretty good for story and PV. She should have more like this, instead of the artistes/visual videos that she always does

Andrenekoi 7th October 2011 02:05 PM

^Well, it's also your opinion that she should have more storyline videos...

Still, as much as I like those too, endless sorrow and alterna being some of her best, I didn't like this one plot-wise too... Even if it had amazing design and the best CGI on market, I wouldn't really like it...

Yoake 7th October 2011 04:52 PM

thanks for sharing!

MemorialAddress 7th October 2011 05:08 PM

How completely random. I kind of liked it though!

hidekirby 7th October 2011 05:53 PM

I don't really see "any" story here. Just scenes poorly put together (ok I got the idea of a princess being trapped by a demon and saved by an army of angels... but ok that's it). I prefer a no-story (yet beautiful) PV than something that uninspired anc cliché.
And while I was saying it was bad, I didn't speak about the CGi effects. I don't care there, because the rest is much worse to me.

AND it's really ok if people thinks it's awesome and so on. :shrug. Don't take things personally. It's just a matter of opinion. No problem about that at all.
The thing is that, if you're into arts (movies etc) you can choose to follow some rules or not. Almost everything is subjective to a certain extent.

It really fits the pachinko image too so that's ok if it's cheap. I'm just sad they used such a song. I'd rather have this with a song that I hate haha.

MissElin_ 7th October 2011 05:57 PM

I think the video actually makes alot of sense. Like in Misa's example:

It hasn't been released as official Duty PV. It has been released as a background video for Duty in the pachinko machine. Half the scenes aren't even exclusive to the song, it was cut together from a bunch of different things recorded for the pachinko machine.
