This is exactly what I'm asking myself. I love Namie sfm, and I'm really curious to see why she's able to have high sales that can make her hold her own against those crap idol people. Besides her being awesome, there's gotta be something else at work here. The only thing I can think of is that she seems a little mysterious? She's been around in the industry for so long, but she always strikes me as a very professional, quiet person who reveals a lot of herself in her live performances. I remember how loud the crowd cheered for just seeing her smile lol

Although imo the only thing of hers not to wow me was "Uncontrolled" but everything before that is faaaabulous (ask me how much I stan for PAST < FUTURE. Go ahead. Ask lol).

She's still going strong it seems :yes.

Her promo is mostly magazines and billboards and some good tie ins. But where she really wins is in general public opinion. She is just generally well liked and people think she is cool.

Yeah, I thinks she comes across as a polite and well-mannered person which I think resonates well, especially in Japan (and with me :laugh). Also, her promotion was HUGE. 20th anniversary is a big deal!

What do you guys think the best Namie performances are?

First Timer @ Past < FUTURE 2010. I give it a lot of credit since I never liked FIRST TIMER until that performance. Also that was one of Namie's best tour outfits.

I haven't seen much of recent Namie, but I think her t.v. performances of I HAVE NEVER SEEN have to be my favorite. The choreography is awesome.

One of my all-time favorite performances of Namie is 'Toi et Moi' at the Genius 2000 tour.

It was like one of the most perfect openings to one of her live tours.

I agree. I think this is actually the first Namie performance I ever saw. My sister bought the concert and I watched it with her. It really was amazing.

I think I remember reading several years ago that Namie got full custody of Haruto around the time that Girl Talk was released. It was such a long time ago but I remember that because the article mentioned how all these good things were happening in Namie's life recently: Girl Talk hit #1 for 2 days (ultimately getting #2 for the week) and she won custody of her son.

Namie needs to write a song about how she's owning the orison charts XD
I wish she'd write more music, makes me appreciate the song a LOT more.

Being a single parent is viewed as a bad thing in Japan, it was expected that SAM got the custody so his parents could raise the children, as both Namie and SAM, as a divorced couple, were seen as not capable.

Yes, originally Sam was granted custody. I don't think it had anything to do with her schedule etc but more to do with the fact that there is still a major imbalance of the sexes in Japan and as you said the judge seems like he favored Sam for that reason alone. They apparently all still lived in the same apartment building at this time though so it seems like maybe legally Sam had custody, but in reality Haruto was still with Namie most of the time.

Yeah, it really doesn't show anything bad. Much more in depth reports were aired on Japanese tv.

I didn't start accepting "NEW LOOK" until late last year/early this year. Even still, it's not my cup of tea, but I graduated from Hating it to Tolerating it.

"WHAT A FEELING" was and still is everything and "ROCK STEADY" was always that inbetween song for me. I had nothing against it, some parts I really liked, but I didn't feel like sitting through the longer parts I didn't like. I eventually fell for the song a year or 2 later though.

SSWD reminds me of NEW LOOK, hence is why I don't like either song.

Naa, imo SSWD is billion times better than NEW LOOK, the song has unique/weird melody, beside Hot Girl it's one of my most favourite tracks of Uncontrolled, always reminds me of Namie from Queen of Hip Pop era(songs like My Darling, I Wanna Show You My Love)

^No i love it too, it's so sweet and one of her best cutesy ish songs. It was the first 60s70s80s track i really got into.
Rock Steady is the highlight of the single though, it still slays me to this day.

What I like about 60s,70s,80s single is they simple the song with the most signature tune of that decade, every song on this single is amazing and I really love Baby Love, so it's easy for me to felt in love with New Look. :)

ETA: I think 60s70s80s is a great triple a-side, IMO. "WHAT A FEELING" gets stuck in my head all the time (in a good way), NEW LOOK is just adorable (that style of singing and sort of old school pop fits Namie). ROCK STEADY is really the only one I'm just "ok" with, but even then it's still a pretty solid song. Truth be told the only thing I've been disappointed with in regards to her releases is Uncontrolled. I think it's such a weak album but I can forgive it because PAST < FUTURE is still getting heavy play on my iPod. Can't always release things as dank as P<F.
