It's nice that she's releasing again, since she takes FOREVER to do that, it seems. I'm guessing it'll be something upbeat?

apple-pi 24th December 2008 12:03 AM

omg, the new single's title just sounds so awesome :love
good to see it didn't take forever for something to be announced after Trinka Trinka, as was expected x__x

GRACE 24th December 2008 01:10 AM

I'm not getting my hopes up =/... This IS Livy we're talking about...

KarenPang 24th December 2008 02:40 AM

I hope her new single wouldn't get canned / delayed like what happened to her previous releases

lol I will be doing that Melody

it has been waaay too long since she last put out another single :( . 2 years already since Wish / Starless Night :thud

Mirai Noah 24th December 2008 06:29 PM

I don't think that the single will canceled, since it has a tie in. But I'll cross my fingers! :D

Celaphorce 24th December 2008 07:00 PM

Hopefully on the song she'll include the "original" version of Recorded Butterflies, I would like to have the song the way it should be already!!!

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 24th December 2008 11:55 PM

^ I'd so love to hear the original of Recorded Butterflies. Made me a little mad when the NANA BEST still had the same version of RB on the OLIVIA inspi' album.

Yeah, when I saw that Rain had a tie-in, I knew then Trinka trinka wouldn't be cancelled.

Huaka 25th December 2008 02:38 AM

I bet her new song might be a ballad. After all she reappeared back on the music scene with a ballad single, so I don't think it's out of the question.

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 25th December 2008 06:09 AM

Fine by me since ballads seem to be a strong suit for 'Liv.

Beauty4123 25th December 2008 02:23 PM

i'd prefer something like "wish" or "rain", but i'm okay if it's a ballad, lol. it just better be a good one :P

HonMaru 25th December 2008 02:32 PM

Wow, this is unexpected. I was expecting to wait for another mini-album in 2010...
I guess we'll be getting more Trinka Trinka / Trapnest-esq music.

That wouldn't be bad. I'm kinda wishing she'll return to The Lost Lolli era. She'll do something like "Denial" or "Blind Unicorn".

apple-pi 26th December 2008 01:08 PM

I think I liked her synchronicity era the best. soulmate and Escape the Flames are like, my favorite songs from her.

KarenPang 27th December 2008 05:05 PM

I just hope her new song will sound good . I really don't mind another Wish or a little pain once more

only thing's that I would like OLIVIA to be more active in her releases & not put them out in a snail pace mode :dead2

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 27th December 2008 09:13 PM

^ That might happen considering this is the fastest release from her since NANA.

XFER 28th December 2008 01:01 AM

I don't like the common titles that can easily be interpreted, cause to me, it means a straightforward song. I ant titles like Purple Box, Blind Unicorn or those that you are left thinking: "What that song can be about??" I hope for some reason, the song is released earlier... or at least a leaked version :P

& I thought the way Tackey & Tsubasa released their material is bad/slow

no offense to OLIVIA but if she continues to release her material in this manner , her fans will probably forget all about her in due time .

You look at how badly Trinka Trinka did :S

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 28th December 2008 06:38 AM

Tackey & Tsubasa still release material? :thud
Dead serious, I didn't know they were still active.

Her releasing slowly is probably one of the reasons why her sales and popularity were low before NANA.

If we count only from her solo career, Olivia been in for 9 years and has released 10 singles.

but at least it's more or less confirmed that she's back with new material although it doesn't hurt for her to put out another full length album :(

Huaka 28th December 2008 09:10 AM

I want some Space Halo, Bliss Forest, or some of those experimental tracks. Those were neat. Have some pretty interesting lyrics and have such evocative moods.

Hey! OLIVIA announced her new single will be coming out hopefully in April and it seems that the b-side will be called Owl's Tear.

Sailing free & Owl's Tear? Ahh~ These sound very promising. I hope they are the style of the music on "The Cloudy Dreamer." That's one of my all time favorite albums. It probably is my favorite mini album.

amorphose 21st January 2009 10:29 PM

Ahh~ I'm so disappointed. Lots of conversation and I missed it. XD This thread wasn't very active for a while.

I think for OLIVIA, mini-albums serve kind of as single. Her releases are so few and far between, I bet that's why she does the mini-albums instead of singles.

If she follows The Lost Lolli's pattern, then there will be two more mini-albums followed by a full album.

rookies 21st January 2009 10:31 PM

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 21st January 2009 10:42 PM

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 21st January 2009 11:12 PM

They should coe out near the same time. Her single may come out before the game does.

amorphose 21st January 2009 11:44 PM

Hopefully the single will come out in April.

January for Koda Kumi
February for Ayumi
March for Utada and BoA

amorphose 22nd January 2009 12:24 AM

I wonder why when she started her career, she did so in Japan? Didn't she grow up in America? And did she just recently actually LEARN Japanese?

I wonder why she didn't just try it in America~

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 22nd January 2009 02:20 AM

She was born in Naha, Okinawa but moved to America twice because her father was a marine. She started her career in Japan because she living there at the time, attending Okinawa Actors School. I've read before from the Purple Sky interview whenever she wrote a song, a staff member translated some of the lyrics into Japanese since she knew very little. I guess she did learn how to speak and write in Japanese flulently just now.

I was searching through my computer and I found this article I wrote about Livy for a friend's internet publication in January of last year, when "Trinka Trinka" was still planned to be released in February.

I'd like to share it with you guys:
Spoiler:

Color of your sound
OLIVIA LUFKIN'S NEW MUSICAL DIRECTION

INTO THE STARS
When Olivia Lufkin's first solo project, synchronicity, was released in December of 2000, she had stated that "there was no real concept to the album" as it was a mix of pop, rock, ethereal, and even jazz music. After the album's release Olivia went on a year-long hiatus until she finally reemerged in December of 2001 with her seventh single, Sea me. Along with the release of Sea me, Olivia's signature dark-rock and ambient sound was finally established, thus leading to her to switch from the avex trax label, which she had previously released on, to the cutting edge sub-label of avex trax, which was more rock oriented.

Olivia stuck with her new sound for her next single, Into The Stars, and continued to create a sound that was all her own as she went on to release the mini-albums, internal bleeding strawberry, MERRY & HELL GO ROUND, Comatose Bunny Butcher, and The Return of the Chlorophyll Bunny. The period in time which Olivia released these albums has been referred to as "The Mini-Album Era."

In the months following the release of The Return of the Chlorophyll Bunny, it was announced that Olivia's second full-length album, The Lost Lolli, was soon to be released. The album was more of a compilation of songs from all four mini albums, rather than a whole new album, although it did feature two new tracks and two rearrangements. It is safe to say that The Lost Lolli was definitely the peak of Olivia's dark sound.

TRAVEL TO THE MOON
Following the release of The Lost Lolli, Olivia once again disappeared from the music industry and entered another state of hiatus. This hiatus would last a little over double the time of the first, about two and a half years. Olivia did, however, state that around the time of The Lost Lolli's release she was "feeling pretty depressed" and she had "started to notice a lot of her faults." She also stated that this was brought out from a "...dark filter through which she saw everything." During the long hiatus Olivia sought work modeling for a fashion magazine. She also lived in Los Angeles for three months before finally returning to Tokyo to repair her state of living.

In March of 2006 the silence was finally broken; it had been announced that Olivia would return to releasing music, however, she would be playing the role of Trapnest's lead vocalist, Reira, for the anime adaptation of the popular Japanese manga, NANA. June 28th of 2006, Olivia released her ninth single, and first for Trapnest, a little pain. Olivia stated that with the release of a little pain her musical expression was undergoing change. The sound of the NANA inspired song came as a shock to Olivia's long time fans, because although it still maintained Olivia's signature rock sound, many pop-elements that had not been displayed by Olivia since the release of synchronicity had been added to the mix. She said that her style "had gotten a lot more detailed" and had now become "pleasing to the ear" and "a lot cooler."

THE CLOUDY DREAMER
Olivia continued to release music written for NANA. In October 2006, four months after a little pain was released, her tenth single, and second single as Reira, Wish/Starless Night was released. The release of this single prompted relief in many of the fans that were turned off by the pop sound of a little pain, as Wish and Starless Night were absent of any pop-influences. However, both songs were noticeably different from anything released during her now famed "Mini-Album Era." The new sound Olivia was creating using Trapnest and Reira as a muse was drawing more and more attention to her in Japan and her small legion of fans was beginning to bulk up. Fans that have been around since the time of The Lost Lolli will commonly be heard saying that Olivia's new direction "is not bad, but she's lost her edge."

In January of 2007 Olivia took a break from NANA, and briefly returned to releasing music simply under Olivia, and not Olivia inspi' Reira (Trapnest), and the first mini-album since her second hiatus, The Cloudy Dreamer was born. The Cloudy Dreamer included eight songs total; six new tracks as well as a little pain and an English version of Wish. Starless Night was not included on the mini-album. The Cloudy Dreamer marked another first for Olivia, as it was her first mini-album to not be sung entirely in English. A month after the release of The Cloudy Dreamer Olivia released, under the name of Olivia inspi' Reira (Trapnest), a self titled full-length album with ten songs, all written from Reira's point of view. A best album followed yet another month after chronicling Olivia and Anna Tsuchiya's work for NANA, called NANA BEST.

Olivia once again remained silent for an extended period of time, the remainder of 2007. She has stated that she will not be releasing any more music under the name of Reira. A single was planned for the Fall of 2007, however it was delayed multiple times because Olivia "could not choose which song should be the a-side." Before the arrival of 2008 the single was canceled all together and a new mini-album is set to be released on February 20th, 2008. Olivia preformed two songs that are speculated to be on the new mini-album at the end of 2007. They are called Real Love and miss you. Both songs seem to maintain the watered down rock, poppy sound of The Cloudy Dreamer and Olivia's works as Reira, although only time will tell what the new mini-album has in store.

THE FUTURE
Olivia Lufkin's past, present, and future musical directions seem to be as mysterious and unpredictable as her music itself. Be sure sure to check out the new mini-album when it drops in late Feburary and decide for yourself what path you think her music is taking now and weather it's for better or worse.

:)

^ Thanks for sharing that article you wrote, it's very nice to read. ^^

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 24th January 2009 10:40 PM

A very lovely read. The question now is what might her music sound like?

amorphose 25th January 2009 12:42 AM

OLIVIA's style pre-NANA and her NANA style music are obviously very, very different. Once The Cloudy Dreamer came out, it was like she had sort of merged the two styles and that mini album was the result of that merging.

Trinka Trinka, seems to be a further progression on that sound, but overall her music seems to be getting more upbeat and happy. At first I was thinking that if she kept progressing on this sound that Trinka Trinka had, and she kept making more and more uplifting music that we'd end up with OLIVIA-styled synthy power pop with old school OLIVIA-rock elements as supporters.

But after seeing the titles from her upcoming single (in particular Owl's Tear) it seems like she might be reverting back to her roots a little more, maybe? I guess title's can be deceiving though... So we'll see how this comes out in due time!

And thanks for the compliments on the article! ^_^

rookies 25th January 2009 01:06 AM

The Cloudy Dreamer is my favourite album of hers. <3

amorphose 25th January 2009 02:15 AM

It's also my favorite. Although, I also really enjoy internal bleeding strawberry and The Lost Lolli...

Stars shining out + Who's gonna stop it? + a little pain = <3333

The Lost Lolli is my #1 fave. I love how out there the lyrics could get and the experimental compositions of the songs.

omg yes I love Cut me free as well

it sounds like OLIVIA's current music's more upbeat unlike her past material which's good

I've read before from the Purple Sky interview whenever she wrote a song, a staff member translated some of the lyrics into Japanese since she knew very little. I guess she did learn how to speak and write in Japanese flulently just now.

Even though she was in Japan she probably stayed on a base where English was mostly spoken.

I miss the lost lolli days but as long as shes making new music it'll override it (my missing the lost lolli days).

does anyone feel that she converses better in Eng rather than Japanese or I could be wrong about it ? :shrug

^ Yeah, I agree. :yes

Whenever she speaks Japanese, it sounds like she's a high school student learning the language, trying very hard to form what they wanna say in their head first.

I do agree, that she sounds much better talking in English rather than Japanese.

nice to hear a release date! :)
i hope the song's good.

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 11th February 2009 03:37 AM

I'm curious about OLIVIA's version for "Sailing Away". Does it mean she helped direct the PV?

Beauty4123 11th February 2009 03:55 AM

i took it as a PV with OLIVIA in it, as opposed to a PV without scenes of OLIVIA (which i think would be the BASARA version of the sailing free PV?)
