I feel like "Eyes, Smoke, and Magic" are words associated with putting on a show? So I feel like as she continues not to pretend to not notice her parents relationship break, she continues the "show" of family? maybe?

Interesting lyrics! Thanks!

Seems like its a song about ignoring known problems. I think the reference to diamonds and roses symbolizes her unwillingness to fall into the same slump, sorta like, "Who needs love, when there's diamonds and roses?"

I think so too :yes
It's a very ironic and interesting song, i like it (one of the few that i like from Party Queen)

My version for those interested:
Spoiler:
Eyes, Smoke, Magic

Popcorn in hand, papa is hitting it off
With his friend the TV remote today too
Mama looks on with furrowed brows
And a depressed look on her face as always

I watch them but pretend not to

Yes, diamond and roses
Are my best friends
What has more value than those two?
Mama doesn’t tell me

Today papa is watching TV
With nachos in hand for a change

Mama’s face looks even more depressed

Yes, that’s why I’ll go silently today too
Say “Eyes, Smoke, Magic”

I watch them but pretend not to

Mama’s face looks even more depressed

lmao NACHOS XD

I think she mentions her parents because, in her personal sense, her parents are the ultimate form of broken love, no? And if you're going to go for the sense that Eyes, Smoke, Magic refers to the idea of being stuck in an illusion, then... well, this is the best one. Ayu imagining herself as a kid with her parents, though the image isn't perfect.

I also don't think this song is referring to ayu's parents as 'popcorn' n 'nachos' are being used in the lyrics. for older days japanese would have something else as a snack rather than these 2? might have been wrong but these seems to comes from a more western family.

I could totally relate to the lyrics, I love this song now. ;d
They are very ironical.

I really like the lyrics, when I heard Papa and Mama, I wondered what would come out of it, taking into account her pesronal past, and it's been a very interesting result. Thank you for the translations, as always.
Btw, my two cents about the title: Eyes, Smoke, Macgis are like the three steps to a magic trick. First you have to see what it appears to be, then it dissapears, and then it comes the result. Anyone have seen Nolan's The Prestige, well, something like that, but used metaphorically for her deliberate failure to notice.
Bravo Ayu!

Can't get the relationship bewteen Eyes smoke magic and the other lyrics of this song..But is still one of my favourites of this album, love the atmosphere it creates

Refix 21st March 2012 10:58 AM

Thank you for the lyrics! Really interesting lyric I must say.

I like the second translation better. Seems to imply - all you need in life is material posessions because relationships only bring unhappiness, but that view is ignorant and behind the "eyes, smoke, magic".

I still hate this song, but those lyrics are just not what I expected. So dark. Adds another dimension I didn't see before.

So odd.

Just sounds to me like her mom is unhappy with her father because he's seemingly lazy and uncaring. ayu sees this, and it upsets her, and in typical ayu fashion, she closes her eyes to it and pretends that everything is OK.

inspire_rmx 24th March 2012 07:20 AM

interesting!!

Jennie Mae 24th March 2012 07:41 AM

I think that, continuing with the theme of love being hopeless that we see throughout the album, Ayu is stating that love and marriage is pointless because it just boils down to a broken relationship. And she'll take the diamonds and roses instead while casting an ironic eye on her parents.

femtrooper 24th March 2012 07:45 AM

Wow, definitely confused...weird!

waterballoon 24th March 2012 08:02 AM

isn't it obvious? I think she's singing about her parents.

her parents are having a failed marriage; the verses narrate how they aren't really communicating at all.

when she sings about how her best friends are roses and diamonds, yet her mom never taught the value of them or something, it felt as though she was trying to say her mom never really taught her anything about life... remember it was her grandmother she was the closest to in her younger days.

very good lyrics imo.

freedreamer 24th March 2012 08:13 AM

Could she be singing about her own marriage as well from the point of view of a little girl??
Maybe thats why she questions whether she has grown up. Maybe Mannie ate Popcorn and Nachos before...lol

Embleu 24th March 2012 08:17 AM

Popcorn and nachos? She's come quite a long way since Seasons, eh?

(Lovin' PQ's EPIC lyrics, yup.)

yamadashun 24th March 2012 08:29 AM

^
^wow i like this idea! and it makes more senses with the popcorn and nachos lol.
