DVD video. My DVD player isn't anything special really, it's pretty standard. So yeah, all the videos had to be converted to DVD video in the burn process.

vob (or mpeg2) is a lossy codec, that means that the avi file, which was probably encoded from the original .vob file, will become even lower quality when you encode it to mpeg2 again.
It's like, if you encode a 320k mp3 into 192k and then back to 320k the quality of the new 320k file will in reality be much lower than 192k. |
