i'm not so sure about the obis...the only japan version of an album i have is mink - the prologue album...i just thought that the obi was shiny XD; so i kept it...i think...i may have thrown it away, but i'm pretty sure it's still in my cd case
but i seriously didn't know that japanese versions of the album only have obis XD;; |
I keep it just because it makes me feel special *retarded face look*
|
... I keep 'em. ;P
I think it's the fact that it's from Japan that I keep it. That's about it. XD [EDIT] Oh yeah... I keep the stickers to. :laugh I just tear the sticker off the plastic and put it on this container thing that holds my obi's, cards, etc. that comes with the albums. :D |
i always keep them.
once my mum threw away my Secret obi, omg, i was so angry i search the whole rubbish bin for it. found it at last :D |
and actually not only the japan version have obis, the oversea version have too
|
OBi's are so cool but I usually end up losing them. The only ones I've preserved so far are TMR's UNDERCOVER obi and Ayu's dissapointing Secret one. I expected more color from Ayu's but at least the album is still on rotation for me and that's whats more important to me!
I guess they are just nice to have overall. |

Ok, I always keep them, either in the booklet if it fits, or just use a weak adhesive tape to keep it around the side like it's brand new. It makes the album seem new. Obi's like on the I Am... album is amazing, you'd be a downright idiot to throw it away, it's the giant of the Obi's. But yeah, they're useless, and they're a hassle. My My Story Obi is slightly crumpled. :weep Because my silly brother ripped the CD without my permission and didn't handle it with utmost care. Yeah, I keep stickers as well! But I stick em on the album's jewel case for reference and easy keeping. |
the tracklisting is often on the obi, so that's why you need to keep it.
|
First a little history of the obi. The first CDs produced were in Japan, but they were US artists. So the obi was put into use for CDs to show information on the CD in japanese; katakana names for the artists, usually katakana-ized titles & tracklists. That way they could be alphabetized in the CD stores based on the japanese spellings of the artist & album name. When jpop started up, they just kept on with the obi thing, making it a part of the package design, even though it often wasn't NEEDED really. But it allowed for more liberal package designs, as the back cover no longer needed price, release date, and UPC code on it. That could all go on the obi.
I usually keep them, to preserve their collectability, and alot of times the tracklist as written on the actual packaging is either too hard to read (Far away, ayu-mi-x II sparkly cases) or not there at all (Fly high & kanariya), so I need it. However, when & if the obi gets torn up or ruined, I just keep the pieces but I don't panic over it (my Endless sorrow obi is completely halved). I get mad if someone throws away an obi by accident, or if it gets lost, but i get over it pretty quick. |
I used to keep them back when I treated my Japanese CDs like anthrax but now I could care less. I just throw them away.
|
The cds look a lot cooler with the obi XD
|
I just throw all mine away - if I kept them for every CD, they would just get in the way when I'm trying to take an album off my shelf. And they would just fall off or get wrecked on the CDs in my CD rack.
mi|kshake~ |
i always throw mine away...i would never sell anything, because as far as i know, it could become rare in about 3 years
|
The only OBIs that I think are actually worth keeping, like you wouldn't want to throw these aways compared to others:
WON'T BE LONG - Exile & Koda Kumi (it's so sparkly o.o) I Am.. - Ayumi Hamasaki (the big one) ULTRA BLUE - Utada Hikaru (transparent OBI's are cool xD) And any other OBI for a CD that doesn't have a back cover so you can know the the tracks. |
^ hehe yu forgot Ayu's Daybreak OBI..its like everyone's favorite haha
|
to me...japanese cds just don't look complete w/o their obi strips. especially on special cds and singles, like the 12 koda kumi singles someone mentioned before.
besides, they make good bookmarks :) |
I don't know why I keep mine. Maybe if I some day sell them, they'd be worth a lot more with the obi. (though I doubt I'd do that) Some are really pretty.
Like Daybreak's. All pretty blue with that Daybreak ayupan cartoon thingy on it. :) Also, Catpower's The Greatest special edition came with a kinda obi. It like fit over the top of it and brandished the title. And that was american released. I hope europeans don't start with the obi stuff too. I don't have room. :) and they'd loose they're value. now that I think of it, keeping obis is kinda like keeping reciepts, or those advertising pamphlets that come in VHS movies and DVDs. (but then again I keep those too...) |
oh, and when you keep the cds on your shelf, the obis actually help to tell which is which cd! i don't have to take the whole stack down.....
|
It will be worth more when you sell it 5000 years in the future. XDDDDDD
No, it's just that they are pretty rare cds in other countries.. so we like to keep all of what we paid for. XD I think the point of an obi is so that the real cover wont have a barcode on it. O_O |
