^I think at one time they were actually sold physically. My mom has a very old vinyl back from the 1960s of a Beach Boys single.

Before digital downloads they used to actually sell singles physically. I own a cassette tape of Britney Spears' debut single lol (it must be rare I wanna sell it so bad). So I think they just counted radio plays and physical sales.

Back in the old days, it was based on how many cassettes/cds were sold in the store.

^I feel same way quite often. Even many of my JPOP tastes seem to be out of date these days.

And physical copies of singles still exist in some places besides Asia. A few years ago I actually found an HMV selling copies of LG's BTW single for $2. I'd love to find a physical copy of Birthday tbh. That'd be cool.
