The nostalgia element is big in this release so I understand that. By chance, when Kuu's cover album came out I was only familiar with 4 or 5 of the original songs so while I still enjoyed it it didn't have the full effect of what a cover album is kind of supposed to do.

I was so excited when I saw this track list because many of them are songs I've loved for so long and others I actually listen to.

This. Cover albums appeal to different people. Obviously people who loved the original Japanese songs will dig this release because not only does she cover 'em she turned them into English versions, which is really cool.

Started listening to COVERS. Can't get into it. Japanese -> English never works out, even for the flawless BENI, sorry. The songs all have incredibly awkward phrasing.

^ I learned to not pay too much attention to the lyrics, and just enjoy the music itself. A lot of her songs have cheesy lyrics as hell anyways, japanese, or english. lol

obviously if you don't know how the original songs sound like , listening to COVERS seem & feel as though it's totally alien/new

I've heard the originals that were sung by Ken Hirai & Kobukuro . Listening to BENI's English takes on them is just really refreshing & something different

She could have sung the songs in its original language but the fact that she went 1 step further & translate the lyrics to English , that's something you don't see it everyday

the fact that COVERS reached a new peak position of #3 in its 2nd week , I think it's saying a lot as it's not often I see releases that reach new peak positions that's even better than its 1st week performance

honestly, I only listened to half of covers lol

I really only listen to BENI for her voice and her sparkly songs anyway.

I understand that there is some nostalgia tied with the tracks.

But that doesn't change the fact that the songs sound like really off-beat poems. The way BENI sings it is just incredibly awkward. I'm not sure how to describe it. BENI doesn't really attempt to rhyme or anything, it just sounds like a bunch of thoughts in her head that she's singing against a backdrop of music.

The music is pretty though.

maybe in the process when she translated the lyrics from Japanese to English , somehow or other , the original meaning in the choice of songs she covered tends to get lost or sounds off key in English ?

to a certain extent yes but I guess it's because in COVERS contains covers of popular songs that were originally sung by Japanese male singers

the fact that BENI chose to cover & sing timeless classics such as Fukuyama Masaharu-san's Sakurazaka & Ken Hirai's Hitomi wo Tojite & etc , these songs are already very familiar with the general public

so I guess those who're buying COVERS have already been familiar with these songs & are curious to hear how the songs sound in English ? :O

On May 23, female singer BENI (26) gave a surprise live performance at Shinjuku Station Square in Tokyo to commemorate the sale of over 200,000 copies of her first cover album ‘COVERS‘.

The album has 13 English translation covers of songs by male artists, including Fukuyama Masaharu’s (43) “Sakura Zaka.” For her surprise live performance, she did not sing any of the songs from the album, but she did sing an English cover for the first time of DA BUBBLEGUM BROTHERS’s song “WON’T BE LONG” with DA BUBBLEGUM BROTHERS member Bro.KONE (56).

Her father is American, and she sang fluently in English. Bro.KONE gave her strong praise, saying, “Your English is amazing isn’t it.” BENI laughed as she commented, “KONE-san is normally modest.”
