(I am-Rainbow era was pretty good; she could've been easily mimicked by girls) Now she wears extremely expensive clothes, or clothes that no one really wears on the streets(take the Rule performance on MSta for example).

I completely agree. She shouldn't have to change her appearance or image, but a fashion revival could definitely lead to a sales/general interest revival. She may be in her third decade, but she's not too old to impact the youth fashion industry. She'll still be a relatively popular artist regardless, but it's not a bad prospect to consider.

Uemarasan 12th April 2009 07:27 AM

In my opinion, My Story is an album to return to after you've aged a bit.

Come to Asia and you'll see that there are a LOT of people on the streets lugging around LV bags, Gucci, Prada, you name it. It's something called "fake designer goods" :P

It's not about buying expensive clothes. It's about looking expensive in inexpensive clothing. Ayu's high-end style isn't only accessible to the elite rich, unless you insist on buying the exact same articles of clothing. If one has the eye for fashion and the patience for shopping and digging through vintage shop bins, rummage sales, flea markets, etc., especially in Japan, one could easily look like Ayu.

jbrat2219 12th April 2009 07:56 AM

NEXT LEVEL's holding steady at #5 today - http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/d/

I think it will be in the top10 for another week judging on how the progress's

noidea 12th April 2009 02:15 PM

Thats really bad, I doubt it will be able to sell 450k in this way...I am even starting to doubt 400k

rakeru 12th April 2009 03:07 PM

at least it's held steady in the top 5, but i feel like it'll slip out of the 10 next week.

tokyoxjapanxfan 12th April 2009 04:16 PM

if you walk down any street in tokyo, you'll see not only women, but men as well, strutting along with designer goods. Japan accounts for around 40% of all of Louis Vuitton sales. Japan alone. It's not rare here to see even a teenager in high school (even boys) with designer bags and accessories. And really, finding fake handbags in Japan is really really hard. Plus, they don't want fake ones, they like to show off how much they can spend. LV is generally the most popular one, but gucci, dior and coach are also very present. Prada not as much, but still there. If anything, the girls of shinjuku and shibuya are still taking hints from her style, they love to spend money.

However, that being said, this is just Tokyo. I have no idea about other parts of Japan. :P

noidea 12th April 2009 04:19 PM

If a book I read is thrustable it the same in all japan, or at least in all citys.

waterballoon 12th April 2009 06:14 PM

You guys... speak... Prada?! (HAHA sorry I can't help it)

Right, to find fake designer goods in Japan is a task and if you actually owned any would be considered shameful. :) You have to have a lot of money to waste to buy them. And at least from what I have experienced, young girls who do nothing but spend their parents money on these frivolous things are looked down upon and are generally seen as shameful. You could say that the young generation is LV obsessed, but that certainly doesn't account for the whole country. Outside of Tokyo, yeah, its a different story - I've lived out in a small town and visited the Hiroshima area numerous times and don't remember seeing anything really designer.

waterballoon 12th April 2009 08:28 PM

Okay, I'm still licensed to hope that a mysterious 10 000 more copies would be added to this week's sales, when the weekly sales come out.

kuri♥ayu 12th April 2009 09:37 PM

^^ but why would buying LV bags be seen as shameful and by who? it's not like they held up their parents and were like give me money so i can buy this. if the money is given to them, then they can spend it on whatever they like. if your obsession is designer bags rather than something else then what's the problem?

Andrenekoi 12th April 2009 09:46 PM

They can aways make out with older guys for money =)

noidea 12th April 2009 10:17 PM

^ Isnt that even a usual thing in japan? Again, i got this from a book, but it seemed quite realistic(and not realistic at the same time) to me, it said the LV, Prada and so on bags are often gifts from the men the women sleep with instead of money they directly buy the bag the girl/women wants

kuri♥ayu 12th April 2009 10:55 PM

^ well if i was someone who worked for my money or got it from my parents, and then bought those bags. I probably would look down on someone if i knew that they slept with someone for it. but, how would you even know that they did that unless they told you? and you can't go around japan assuming that every young person with an expensive bag is sleeping with someone.

although i'm sure that it is true that some do have sugardaddies lol

we're totally off topic aren't we? sorry!

I'm asian btw =p

What I meant about her high-end style is that I prefer her I am.. fashion where her clothes looked like any teenager would want to imitate/buy easily. She used to appeal more to the average teenager that just wanted something fashionable and easily accessible, but her style now is harder to imitate. She's still fashionable..but its just a different more mature style. I wish she would wear start wearing jeans again, but her music style lately doesn't really let her wear something simple.

I was feeling a little sorry for Koda Kumi when Trick did not sell very much because i thought the public was still overreacting to her comment or whatever. And then NL came out and :thud

It's just not a good time for solo female artistes. I thought NL could reach double platinum easily but looks like it can't even do that now.

yeah it's not really a good time for albums to be released , let alone by solo artistes

I can't imagine when Ken Hirai will release Ken's Bar 2 next month on 27th :dead2 (sorry a bit off topic here) but it seems like bands are having a better chance as compared to solo artistes at the mo

but Ayu isn't a teenager anymore and she shouldn't act nor dress like one. And honestly even if Ayu never pulls a million ever again I would still prefer to see her have decent sales after 20 years like Matsutoya Yumi who's album won't sky rocket with sales but it's selling quite well considering her music still sounds as if it was made 20 years ago.

Right, that is part of the "shameful" thing I was talking about. Back in the mid 90s, it was found out that it was a fairly common thing for high school girls to basically be running their own prostitution rings in order to procure designer goods. It was a big scandal.

It's more articles than NEXT LEVEL got and ayu's album is only aimed for japanese audience.

I actually find (miss)understood being less experimental (the only new styled song there after all is Bold & Delicious and maybe Pride too).
NEXT LEVEL had really major electronica influenced songs using pop and rock and synthed beats and that's why the album is getting mixed feelings and also from the japanese audience, unlike (m)u that a lot of people liked and it was less experimental.

For hikki's promotion, it was the same with EXODUS that wasn't aimed for the japanese audience and sold a million. No one expected it to be popular in japan like that, but I saw many and a lot expecting way more out of it, at least half a million specially considering a lot of people liked it more than EXODUS. Let's stop the TITO discussion though.

This thread is dark and gloomy enough with people's dissapointment with NL's sales (which generally the number isn't bad but for ayu's standards it's a bit dissapointing).

Btw oricon might actually count the USBs at the end of the oricon week.
Remember that the first week sales were +13,000ed more than the estimated number?
We will know though only at the end of the week (if there won't a be big drop) probably.
If there will though then yeah we can say the encore press officially didn't help much.

^ ahh I guess its my opinion only. I found (miss)understood a refreshing pop album. Sure it was a pop album like usual but the way the music sounded was innovative and different. Next Level may use electronica but it doesn't sound new at all. It sounds like music i've heard before with an addition of eletronic effects. thats just my opinion though.

I don't want to sound rude, but if you want to end a discussion, please don't add your opinion and then say "lets end the discussion". That is a horrible way to end it because its like you're cutting the other person off. Just state thats its off-topic or something.

I think people are too concerned with the sales of the album lol. like I think its alittle lower than expected due to her singles, but like its still pretty darn decent.

I assume the USBs are included tho :S it would seem strange for oricon not to include it until the end wit htheir new system

#5 good job ayu : ) ~! small drop!

Sorry if you felt that way, that wasn't my intension at all :)
I had things to add myself besides what I wrote there (and i'm sure others too) I just thought the discussion didn't fit hehe.

" It sounds like music i've heard before with an addition of eletronic effects."

That's enough to be different. It's still the same artist but this level is different since she uses different things put into it.

Agreeeee!!
Ever since "Naturally" released...OMG
I've been hoping an album with pure techno/trance based songs
NL seems to be heading to the right direction and hopefully the summer single is not going to be fairyland/Blue Bird/glitter etc..those are too similar
but rather a nice trance double A side single with a rock/pop song like "Because of You" as the second song:yes:P:luv2:love:thud:cool

Weren't there some "first-press" USB copies that were already available for pre-order, and then it was all sold out or something?

Then when the first day sales came out, everyone was like saying the USB copies were not included yet because they have not been shipped out.

And the first batch of these USB should have been shipped out since last Wednesday (I think), so it only makes sense if there was an increase in total sales due to that, am I right?

But of course, they could have also already included USB on the first day sales (part of the 99k)... I'm not exactly sure either.

But I know the 'encore' press of the USB will be shipped soon as well. It's a mystery but lol oh well.

Hmmm.... good sales so far. I doubt it but I hope she makes it to 500k

rakeru 14th April 2009 10:14 PM

i doubt sales can increase over the tour, but maybe they can stay drop a little less than they would have...?

hikaricore 15th April 2009 03:11 AM

I think her sales might just hold and not drop...
Just stay even?
That'd be great, a slow, steady road to 400K...

ayumisrael 15th April 2009 12:59 PM

#9 today!
Still on top 10 ^__^.

4th Week second day
Position: #9

PEARL 15th April 2009 01:08 PM

Yay 400k is shining!

TITANIC 15th April 2009 01:24 PM

wow. drop only #4 position isnt that bad

Maemi 15th April 2009 02:15 PM

Finally 300k... I hope she'll be able to reach 400k... if Trick wins over, that would be so terrible DX

Corvina 15th April 2009 02:53 PM

TRICK is still selling, too.
So it's intresting to see who will be better at the end. :P

But to be honest it really doesn't matter, both are great artists.

Maemi 15th April 2009 07:06 PM

^Yeah, but i said that only because I think that Trick must be Koda's worst album ever and I'm going to be a bit disappointed if it will sell more than NL :)

It's still in the top 10! Hope it can reach at least 20k for this week!

Amen to that lol.

Ayu_Ready 15th April 2009 11:29 PM

I think the arena will be good for NL's sales !

hikaricore 16th April 2009 12:24 AM

^Totally agree
I'm really happy with the sales of NL. I think it's doing a great job considering the circumstances (economy, etc.)

kendelle 16th April 2009 01:51 AM

I'm glad she's not out of the Top 10 yet. I wanna know when the USBs will be counted =/ I really hope the USB Encores didn't make up Day 1's sales >_<

I love this album BTW, I'm surprised it's not doing better.

rakeru 16th April 2009 02:41 AM

this is pretty nice, still being in the top 10 in the 3rd week!

TRICK is selling less than 1500 copies a week now, the numbers will prolly only drop. The album probably won't reach 400k in the end.

You never know. ;)
I do hope Ayu and Kuu reach both 400k, because I love both albums a lot.

KarenPang 16th April 2009 12:28 PM

frankly I don't think you should compare TRICK against NEXT LEVEL especially since it's obvious that NEXT LEVEL has the more added advantage (4 editions) as compared to TRICK (2 editions)

but yeah :shrug

I do hope that both albums can reach 400K in the long run but I frankly doubt so :S

ayumisrael 16th April 2009 12:45 PM

Went up to #7 today =D

4th Week Third Day
Position: #7

MissElin_ 16th April 2009 12:47 PM

ah I am pretty sure 4 editions don't make up for the lack of TV promo, and TRICK had plenty of that. Besides all the previous Kumi albums had more than 2 versions (from Secret to Kingdom) and that didn't stop people from comparing them espec. Kingdom and GUILTY. :yes
