Woo, united Ayu fans.

I really do dislike how she says "HO!" "HO!" near the beginning, if she just left that part (and every other time she said it) instrumental, it would have been better. but other than that, I have no reason to dislike this song, I love it. lol

I've always said I always loved rock, and that I solely listen to jrock, that Ayu is the only 'pop' artist I listen to so you can imagine in terms of rock I know what I'm saying; this is really incredible work for a rock song. She really does know the meaning of a 'rock song' and I always knew she'd do extremely well with this sort of song.

I'm definitely happy, and looking forward to the album more and more.

Well I gave in, listened to it twice on my walk to work. I seriously do think having a lower quality rip really causes one not to get the "full" effect while listening. So I think I'll listen to it once more on my iPod and then I'm deleting it. MUST STAY AWAY FROM AHS!

I could try to do more since I made a transcript but I'm not really sure about a lot of parts so I'll just patiently wait for Misa-chan's or somebody else's translation. :) I think the lyrics are pretty basic-Ayu after all, stuff like "But from time to time I can't see your face anymore", "so we let go of each other's hands" and so on but with attitude. :P And the song's so kickass otherwise so who cares.

I think Microphone has just made its way into my favourite songs top ten. I read the translations Not Yet and oji-i-san posted and I really love the lyrics. I don't think these are so typical lyrics for Ayu, and even if they are, right now I just don't care. The song itself is amazing. I don't remember when I've been so obsessed with a Ayu song. It was probably somewhere around talkin' 2 myself/Together When... release. :D

+1, as awesome and amazing as I think the song is, I can see how people wouldn't like it sorta... I mean, I may credit it to the quality in some cases, but I can sorta see it.

I seriously find it hard to believe anyone could dislike this song... But I guess if Ayu can finally unite the majority of AHS into a single solid opinion THAT THIS SONG IS GREAT then I suppose someone could try and throw a wrench in the well oiled machine of peace around here xD;

I bet you Japan hates it, I bet you any money :yes. The last time we united to like a song, it was Sparkle, and Japan didn't like Sparkle :yes.

It's definitely our kinda song, it doesn't sound what normally the Japanese buy. I'm slightly worried about this album sales wise, since it doesn't really seem geared towards them...

Not the point. The point is that people will be able to find flaws no matter how perfect something is when it comes to Ayu. I don't give a hoot if people think differently from me. That's how the world works, people aren't all going to love everything you love and not everyone's going to hate what you hate, but at least be reasonable and not say things when it comes to Ayu like "Why is she doing the same thing again? / Why does she just keep making more rock songs? / other things" just for the sake of saying it every time something new comes out from Ayu.

I'm sorry if it seems to you that I'm against people having negative opinions about Ayu, but a lot of the time, I feel it's unjustified and simply for reasons unknown to me. Someone saying "I don't really like this song" in the case Microphone isn't the same as "Wow, Ayu's still boring and crappy as usual" or "Same old Ayu, mediocre music that sounds the same as every other song she's made", if you understand where I'm coming from. (If not, then so be it.)

A lot of this is true; some people just want to be negative every single time. If they're going to have that sort of attitude they should just 'abandon hope' and give up on Ayu.

If you look around, a lot of the time the people who have bad things to say are the same ones almost time and time again.

Zeke. 23rd March 2010 01:00 AM

^ Yes, but it also bothers me when on every release there are the fans who go "OMG BEST AYU EVERRRRRRRR." I don't think it's the BEST Ayu rock song ever. Mirrorcle World is more genious. I actually think I like most other Ayu rock song better but that's probably because I haven't listened to this one enough yet. I am not saying it's bad, or I'm dissapointed. It's pretty genius. Can't wait for the album! Then I'll play the hell out of it and shortcircuit my brain due to how amazing it will be!

Makes sense to me, but I feel like it's a lot better to have fans that are acting like crazy rabid fans (because every fanbase has them) than to have people who basically hate everything after a certain time period from an artist, you know?

"She didn't make another I am...? Trash."

A case where people seem to like everything is Lady GaGa. Her songs/videos are very hard not to like (though if you're not into extremes, I suppose you might hate her) and for the most part, I've seen nothing but praise for her.

Random, but someone who seems to have music people like but no one really likes the actual artist = Ke$ha, haha.

Odd... weren't the Japanese the ones saying how God-like this song was? Weren't they giving it a lot of praise? Same with Sparkle? Unless you mean the casual listeners? Honestly, I think it's a very difficult song to hate on. I saw someone on another forum try to criticize it but they made no sense and it was obvious they were just pulling things out of their ass to try to somehow "convince" themselves that it's mediocre. It's just not a very hate-able song, kind of like how it's really hard to say anything bad about Sparkle.

This. No matter how amazing Ayu's works are, they're never perfect and if anything, the fact that her fans are nitpicky just goes to show that she's at a level where you have to try hard to find anything that's actually wrong with her music. >_>

I think people like things to almost always be just as they were. An artist is appreciated for one thing, and slowly adored for it, and then suddenly when something changes there are people who love it and accept it for what it is, or there are people who just dump it, or there are people that just compare it to everything they did in the past and make a mockery of the present.

I'm not saying everyone has to love everything, but if you see a pattern in a person always saying 'I hate it' and all that, and they do it with every single freakin' release you can understand that some of us want to ask 'why the hell are you still here?!'. It gets on peoples nerves, and sometimes you'd just wish they'd open a blog somewhere to rant about just how much they hate it, as opposed to raining on everyone's parade, with statements like 'I can't believe you like this ****, it's the worst she's done in ages!' or 'it's horrible! complete and utter fail' and all that.

I never said she was? I said that even if something was perfect / tailored to be liked by everyone / incredibly well made / other criteria, there would still be people who would find faults in it. That's what I'm saying and trying to get across. Even if she tries to please everyone with some amazing out-there track from GaGa-Land or something, there will ALWAYS be naysayers.

I'm so proud of my Sunrise/Sunset love, haha. People were always like "~wow that single was such a downer for 2009. Her worst effort yet!~" but I liked it a lot. It's a bit offensive imo to people who like what others vehemently dislike. I don't really shove my Sunrise/Sunset love in everyone's faces, but it seemed as though it was okay to basically call it her worst single ever...

I feel that for fans who dislike her newer works and want her to "go back to the way she was", they don't understand the nature of her being/personality. She's someone who is constantly changing, and that's one of the reasons I love her so much. She's never stuck in one image/genre for too long (though this rock thing has been infusing itself into everything since MY STORY) and I've found that to be incredibly refreshing.

:yes
I get what you're saying, and it's ridiculous.
As for Gaga, she gets the same ridicule as Ayu in the "comparison to previous releases" department. And she's only had two (mainstream) albums. I've seen people on her videos posting comments like, "Why is she so ****ty?? God I miss the OLD gaga." And Gaga is a pretty new artist.

That bolded bit was said perfectly; I can't say it any better but I have to agree. Though I have to add, that yeah, this rock bit has been around for a while now and it's understandable since she did say at the start of her career she used to listen to big rock bands, Led Zeppelin for example. It's understandable that her rock roots stayed in her.

As for Sunrise/Sunset; I loved Sunrise, I rarely listen to Sunset but I definitely will when the moment is right. If I had to 'compare' I prefer Sunrise to Sunset, but that makes sense because we'll forever like one thing more than the other, but that doesn't mean we necessarily dislike something. Just because I liked Sunset a little less, you didn't see me complaining about it being on the album and all that.

About that, I'm not so sure if that was true. That also came from the same profile that mentioned Ayu had a brother that introduced her to rock (????) or something.

From the livedoor wiki profile:

・親戚のお兄さんの影響で子供の頃はロック(レッド・ツェッペリン、ディープ・パープル)
・98年当時はBabyface、En Vogueなどブラック系
I don't know why they mentioned a brother, but.... make of it what you will, haha.

A lot of that profile seemed kind of fishy, but she probably did kind of like rock as a teen. I wonder if she'll answer a question about it in the future~

Sorry if this is OT, but why is it that she has never mentioned this brother after the fact? Is this person "like a brother" because despite this I was always under the impression that Ayu was an only child.

Larisa-chan 23rd March 2010 01:47 AM

Oh my Godddddd this rock song is amazing. I was a bit disappointed by the rock songs on Next Level, but this song is fantastic. <3

Ayu slays rock songs, I've hardly EVER been disappointed by *any* of her rock songs~ (Identity was maybe one of the only ones? lol)

There have been loads of places where she said that she liked rock music when she was younger. Maybe Led Zeppelin was something from this one particular one you're mentioning which definitely could be wrong, but I'm quite certain she's talked about rock music in the past. That's why reading that interview about the new album made me really think of an early Ayu.

I think bit by bit Ayu has been trying to incorporate rock music into her work a bit more and more. I mentioned something of it in another thread of this, but that post of mine went completely unnoticed I remember.

2004 we had Because of You, which doesn't say too much I guess, especially since we had albums like Duty before. But about MY STORY, it was one of the albums she was happiest with, that she worked hard for it to be autobiographical almost so it made sense for it to have a rock edge. I thought she really wanted to try rock around 2008; that version of A Song for XX performed in such a rock-style manner. Then GUILTY also had a dark rock edge I think in some places. PCDL had End of the World and Heartplace. Now I'm not saying she doesn't work hard at every performance or anything, but she really really stood out (to me) with those performances.

Of course the break in that is NL. My guess is that she had planned on doing an album like that for a bit, and to do it just after her 10th anniversary would be a perfect time for her to go with it. I guess a hint of rock can be found on some of the tracks, but the rock came back out in Future Classics, which if I believe is where she said had something to do with the 2010 tour (in that they're linked in style or something). Future Classics had a decent amount of rock tracks, even in choice of ballads.

truehappiness 23rd March 2010 02:19 AM

I see. I think Ayu's always been a bit of an angry/rockish soul, and that only started to come out around 2003, I'd say. At least, a harder rock that what she'd dabbled in before with I am... or whatever what was on Duty. I really find those albums to be nice, but sometimes I feel like her MY STORY/(miss)understood work outshines it at times...

Hm, since she's mentioned the Future Classics / Rock'n'Roll Circus tour connection, I really do hope that the songs chosen aren't going to be the same at all, haha. Like, I am... and a few other songs can carry over, but please, Ayu, try to keep things fresh at the very least!

I definitely think this album, and this tour to go with it, is going to have a very fresh and new feeling, despite she saying that she's going back to the beginning.

MY STORY and (miss)understood, for me, are like gems of her career. Some people will say that anything after Memorial Address was rubbish and stuff like that, but she just got better and better for me. Those are just two albums that I can listen to from beginning to end with no worries, without pickyness and all that.

I guess for hopes for the new tour...I do believe there's a thread somewhere that should be revived in which people were coming up with their dream setlists. The second the setlist for the new tour is out I want to go back to mine and compare...self-centred maybe (lol) but I'd really like to see if she's carried over any of the ones I love and think will fit with the tour.

truehappiness 23rd March 2010 02:35 AM

Haha, usually I leave the setlist creating up to Ayu since with Ayu it's kind of unpredictable except for the usual staples of evolution/SURREAL/UNITE!/Boys&Girls/etc...

I've never done the sort of thing of making up my own setlist, mostly because I've never been here just when a tour was announced or about to start, or maybe I just never paid that much attention. But this time I gave it a shot and it was good fun.

This song definitely sounds like Yuta Nakano arranged it.

waterballoon 23rd March 2010 03:16 AM

So... I've been listening to Microphone and fell more in love with the arrangement. <3 I could understand if -anyone- doesn't like the song though; the song actually does sound a little monotonous, but that's fine by me.

IMO, the greatest aspects of this song isn't the melody; it's the genius arrangement, and her strong vocals.

emi♡ 23rd March 2010 03:26 AM

^I think you're right...well, like for me, I think the melody is alright most of the song...but the little weird scale she does for the verses at the beginning is kinda...eh for me...I didn't feel her voice was strongest there either...

but it's only for a few seconds and then it's awesome lol

She brought back the keys <3 <3 <3

I wonder how this song will go down with the Japanese audiences.

This. If it weren't for the awesome heavy guitar and epic organs, I wouldn't like it even half as much. The actual melody isn't anything amazing; it's nothing real catchy or creative. But everything else about the song is near genius, hah. So it makes up for it, I think.
Like, this is one of those songs that I'll get the urge to listen to, and I'll just sit in wonder at the wonderful instruments used and such, and I'll enjoy just listening to her vocals (which are really good). I'll love it and love to listen to it because it's so different sounding, and because it has such an awesome feel (and probably because it has one of the best PVs in her discography, hah :O). But it won't be something I have on repeat for hours straight, because the actual song isn't mind-blowing.

i love the melodies, its strong too. the arrangements are great but i think the song is great because of the chorus and the church organ. i dont like the engrish though, but its sucha a small thing its not even noticeable.

this song sounds like a combination of free and easy and talkin2myself! :D

I really like the melody. The way her voice is soft in the verses and then speeds up and BOOM! in the chorus is really dynamic and catchy I think.

The arrangement is freakin' cool though. Love it.:luv2

Crystal_Ageha 23rd March 2010 04:34 AM

^ Yeah, I really like the first part of the chorus, too. That part's catchy. But the verses aren't catchy at all, and the end of the chorus kinda falls off.
But whatever. It's not really a bad thing. Like I said, everything else is amazing, and the song is still great. Songs don't have to be able to instantly ingrain themselves into your brain to be beautiful pieces of work. This is proof. :)

True. I actually find myself really appreciating the songs that I don't initially find catchy more than a lot of others.

I think it's more important sometimes for a song to be interesting, rather just easy to listen to.

Haha, interesting... cos to me the later part of the chorus, in particular the "anata dakara" part gives me goosebumps, while the front part of the chorus just kinda sounds like the same notes imo, lol

But I love the dynamic contrast from the verses to the chorus SO MUCH. Like this song has so much musicality in it that I'm praying the whole album is like this!

2ch are the people who give us the concert setlists as soon as they are performed usually, be grateful!

Way to generalize the Japanese people on 2ch. That'd be like saying that everyone on 4chan = 12 year old boys who don't know wtf they're doing on the internet, but then again that's probably more like /b/ rather than 4chan as a whole.

There are hikikomori on 2ch a la Densha Otoko, but why does that matter? Does their opinion not matter because they're like that? There's also a gaysaloon thread for Ayu that regularly has news, does the users' being "gay Japanese hikikomori" make their opinion not count? 2ch is a pretty weird place, but under all the trolling and gross ASCII images, there's some good people there.

There's actually a lot of decent people on there, lol. So yeah, we shouldn't throw away the opinions, just because they're from 2ch. XP

Sorry buddy but that pretty much is the status of 2ch-ers. I'm assuming you do know the status of that place and how most Japanese people view it as and who is typically assumed to be on it.

I was just pointing out that the fact that 2ch likes it doesn't mean JAPAN likes it ( :shrugs ). Doesn't mean their opinion doesn't count, it just means it's quite the niche that won't determine something like song popularity.

And I'm sure you also know that 3/4 of 2ch is about rape pornography, lolicon, and overall creepy-ass crap.

I made translation from truehappiness posted ones!! thank you to him!

Microphone

Change is a wonderful thing,
But it doesn't mean I'll lose myself.
For sure, there's the things until now that are at my roots,
And there's the me who can get through anything from now on.

Of course, there were the days
Where I felt my limits
And turned my back on everything and crouched.

But I won't lose my way anymore, I don't have any regrets.
Meeting you was my destiny.
Because the one who gives me my meaning of being me,
The one who teaches me my reason for living,
Is you.

But, you know, there's the days when
When I don't even want to see your face, it's that hateful,
So sometimes I think,
"Don't ever come into my sight again."

Even so, it doesn't mean I can be apart from you,
In the end, you're the one I want to be by my side all the time.

I'm pushed by gravity*, and I'm pulled by gravity**,
Meeting you was a necessity.
I can't disobey you, and all I can do is have deep respect for you,
You know this: The me without you
Is not me at all.

If there was a melody that was perfect,
I don't yet want to meet with it.

But I won't lose my way anymore, I don't have any regrets.
Meeting you was my destiny.
Because you give me my meaning of being me,
You teach me my reason for living,

I'm pushed by gravity*, and I'm pulled by gravity**,
Meeting you was a necessity.
I can't disobey you, and all I can do is have deep respect for you,
You know this: The me without you
Is not me at all.

The first gravity means Earth's gravity from the center, and second gravity 引力 means the gravity of an object, which is pulling you in, like a person, etc.

Personally, after reading the interviews she has been doing, what she is talking about, and considering the title, I really think the song is about her microphone, because she keeps saying without music she dies, and she has no meaning for life, and sometimes she is really fighting with microphone... so that is my interpretation!
