I have to say, this intimidates me too. Just the sheer amount of groups they have O_O

It's so hard for me to remember everyone's name, and even harder for me to remember what each one actually looks like. I feel bad about that...but, oh well.

And then a lot of them dress alike...and :/ lol

Same with Japanese artists though. AKB48 and all the hello!project groups are just nightmares for me lol

yeah. it's weird that they release a full album but they only put focus on one song or two only, treating the other track as fillers. Then they have a repackage thingie, which they produce a few new songs and they promote one of the new songs from the repackage.

and I agree with emiko about the comeback thing. I know it's just a term to show that they have new stuff produced. But wait their last album was just released a year ago and this is a comeback? Ok I'm not into Kpop anywayz :P.

Picaflor 7/4 23rd October 2010 06:39 AM

they don't release singles so they put remixes and instrumentals on their albums which makes no sense to me. their albums generally only have 1-2 music videos. there are way too many boy bands and none of them take any part in what they do with music.

I'm also sick and tired of women. "girls girls girls girls girls I do adore" "come be my lady" "girl, hey girl, girl" "beautiful woman". Yes I get it. You like women, stop singing about it.

Lol I seriously just don't even bother unless I really like them. :laugh I only know the girls from 2NE1. I listen to SNSD sommetimes but could never tell you any of their names.

waterballoon 23rd October 2010 06:44 AM

You know the thing is, YES, K-Pop is overrated. But do you know all about K-Pop? I mean... everyone knows about the big stars/bands; SNSD, BIG BANG, TVXQ, SUPER JUNIOR etc... but no one knows the indie/less popular ones, just because they don't release superomgcatchyGeegeegeegeebabybabybaby! song .. =="

Ever heard of Wheesung, TRAX, or any rock bands from Korea or any solo singers who DON'T sing autotuned songs? It's hard to even know them because K-Pop is so saturated with bands singing to autotuned songs (which is dumb because most of them can actually hold a note).

The songs are catchy, but I don't see how that is overrated. Tbh, from what I know, the #1 reason people even become fans of K-Pop/bands (me included) are cos of the members. So yeah, maybe K-Pop is overrated cos South Korea is so damn skilful at their plastic surgery LOL

Exactly. And people don't seem to respect the amount of effort and hard work that these idols have put to become what they are today. Yes, some of them are scouted on the street because of good looks, but most of them audition to get in the agency .. And they don't just become pop stars the next day lol, SNSD's Jessica for example had to train for seven years before making a debut.

None ? Have you ever heard SHINee's album Lucifer ? The boys took part in writing in a lot of the songs in it, and they talked about having a lot of freedom with that album, most of it is their hard work, not a bunch of filler songs that they've been given to sing.

Aditmi Krisnasaki ~II~ 23rd October 2010 09:21 AM

yeah, too MUCH overrated (sadly, but true)

and I'm sick with those sensual-and-immature image by Super Junior~~ ughh~ T3T

milky_way 23rd October 2010 04:39 PM

I knew this would end with people trashing K-pop for no reason :(

TofuBunny 23rd October 2010 05:10 PM

^ ikr :( .. I wish some people here realize how they sound, if it was a jpop artist that's being called overrated we would've had a totally different situation

Spoiler:
But what has mainly been discussed is the mainstream k-pop. Which includes bunches of groups and then solo artits like hyori lee and BoA and g-dragon
That IS what I think is overrated. Simply because hardly can I find a song that I do like. And I can take catchy music. I need it in fact. And honestly I've found several other artists who can make catchsongs of much better quality and can I say catchyness lol

K-indie has many artists and bands that I find of great quality. Korea really does have decent rock bands.

But no one is really discussing that whether they are aware of it or not.

But then u go on to say how most of you are fans because of the members....

Because I can't get into their music I can't fangirl over them. Only sexy boys like G-dragon can I go gaga for cuz I like his stuff
Idk that's how my attraction works with musicians lol

Anyway its the big popular bands ur talking about that I'm saying are overrated. No ones talking about k-indie as its completely different.

Spoiler:
I think there's always misconceptions between kpop fans and non kpop fans.
Like many kpop fans seem to feel as if hate for kpop comes from simply ignorance of it or misunderstanding how everything works.
And often those don't like it do come up with unnecesary generalizations for kpop but several are still quite familiar with it

Its like watching people who constantly hate on popular western music against the fans of it. And the people who hate jonnhy bands and people who are fans of it.

It always works like the same way. Like this thread.

--------
@AkusaRoses: just for u...ill start a thread for how overrated jpop is cuz it sure as hell is -some of it- (imo) just like kpop and other things. Even my precious vkei at times. Just give me some time. :)

Lol I'm starting to get very OCD with how long my posts are XD

lol if anyone talked about how overrated ayu and the other divas in jpop are and how they have 0 talent people would flip out here and say all sorts of immature stuff. i'm glad the kpop fans here are remaining calm and classy through all this straight up bashing and ignorance.

JackieRos 23rd October 2010 07:46 PM

what I don't like is that they have too many names.
DBSK Toshinki, SNSD Girl's Generation so on and so forth.

Pick a name that can fit anywhere if they want to release music
in another country and stick with it.

idk that much about K-Pop so maybe there is a reason of so many names. who knows

hearted 23rd October 2010 07:47 PM

^um... dbsk is their korean name, and they are called tohoshinki only in japan (its a translation of dbsk).. kinda logical :shrug

JackieRos 23rd October 2010 08:04 PM

Yes I know?

It was an example...

TofuBunny 23rd October 2010 08:08 PM

^^ For DBSK and SNSD it depends on the country they're promoting in. But their official/international names are TVXQ and Girls' Generation.
DBSK and SNSD are shorts for their Korean names Dong Bang Shin Ki and So Neo Shi Dae, but they're not official, it's just what int'l fans call them
And Tohoshinki and Shojo Jidai are their names in Japanese .. It's pretty simple :yes

thanks bb, I hope people can keep it classy there too :) .. Respecting hardworking artists even if they don't like them and without making fast judgments over a whole genre after listening to a couple of popular songs :)

waterballoon 23rd October 2010 08:22 PM

@Strawbari: Damn, I must've missed the point of this thread then lol

but well, my stand still stands the same. K-Pop is overrated to a certain extent cos most people who "know" K-Pop only know the big shots, and decide to totally immerse themselves in it... that isn't wrong, but it's a fact of reality.

And yeah some K-Indies are amazing artistes, but aren't they part of K-Pop too? I mean, my point has always been, people say K-Pop is overrated, because all they ever know/see/hear are the same old bands like BIG BANG, SNSD, 2PM, SUPER JUNIOR, etc. Isn't that kinda like every genre of music tbh?

it's not much different than J-pop names. it's just like ayumi being called either 浜崎あゆみ, ayumi hamasaki, or just ayu for short. oh and she's also called something else in taiwan, not sure the lettering of that but it's different.

Ugh, tell me about it. It's one thing to say you don't like the music, but once you start saying people are untalented and so on it's just bashing.

It seems like you're selective with the kind of catchy music you like. Maybe it's because upbeat K-Pop seems more mainstream to you than J-Pop, idk. I think people understand that there are Korean indie and rock artists, but that just might not be the type of music they're looking for, so I can understand why that wouldn't factor into their argument. I don't really see where "most of us" are saying we're fans because of the members though. I like a lot of members in my favorite groups, but their music is the real reason I'm a fan.

They probably didn't pick the original name with any intention right away of going overseas, so obviously it's just the logical thing to do to change their name to something the Japanese (for example) would understand. SNSD would just sound like random words to the, so it it makes perfect sense they'd change it into something Japanese. It's not like they're changing the names for fun.
