Whoa... Almost 880,000 for their February single!? And almost 1.5 million DVDs COMBINED for the first half of the year!?

That's pretty crazy! They're sure making more money than AKB48! (They have the highest two singles, but their DVD sales aren't like ARASHI...)

Arashi tops "Total Sales" & "DVD Sales" categories in Oricon's first half of 2013 ranking

Quote:

Popular group Arashi dominated the "Total Sales by artist" and "DVD sales" categories of Oricon's "first half of 2013 ranking."

This "Total Sales by artist" is the ranking of artists who have the highest amount of the total sales in CDs (both singles and albums), DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs.

This is the first time in 3 years for Arashi to top this category since they last topped it back in 2010 with a total sales figure of 8.43 billion yen (approximately $86,213,610 USD). In the first half of 2013, Arashi has already exceeded a sales figure of 10 billion (approximately $102,227,000 USD) yen on the strength of the hits of their singles as well as the music DVDs.

Behind Arashi was AKB48 who ranked in 2nd place with sales figure of 6.86 billion yen (approximately $70,157,220 USD). Momoiro Clover Z who was ranked in 3rd place, is worthy of special mention, as they made a big leap from 18th place during the same period last year.

Momoiro Clover Z's total sales for the first half of this year reached 3.92 billion yen (approximately $40,089,840 USD) which is 3.6 times more than in 2012, and it allowed them to grab a spot in the top 3 ranking for the very first time.

For the "DVD Sales" category, Arashi dominated first and second place with "ARASHI ARAFES" (released in December 2012, sold 786,000 copies) and "ARASHI LIVE TOUR Popcorn" (released in April, sold 681,000 copies) respectively.

Moreover, the total number of copies sold for the "ARASHI ARAFES" set an all-time record for the first half of a year, breaking their own record of 785,000 copies which they achieved with "ARASHI 10-11 TOUR 'Scene' ~Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fuukei~ STADIUM" back in 2011. Also, their total number of copies sold for music DVD for the first half of a year of 1,523,000 copies, is also a new all-time record which once again broke their own record of 1,015,000 copies.

Yay, new album! As expected, every year...

Really had that thought about those Oricon album sales numbers when NMB48 took #1, but no Johnny's, and I predicted those big boys are going to release albums later on this year...Arashi is now a no exception here. I can't wait for Arashi's new album soon...

Arashi holds a special live in affected areas! Also experience harvesting and firefighting training!

Quote:

The five members of Arashi held a mini live in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake back in May, specifically in Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture. This would be the first time all 5 members visit Iwate Prefecture since the earthquake, and the complete footage will be introduced during the 12-hours special program "THE MUSIC DAY Ongaku no Chikara" (NTV/10:30AM) on July 6th.

Before their performance, all five of them walked through the affected areas to experience their current situation, in addition to make contact with some of the victims. Sakurai Sho (31), Ohno Satoshi (32) and Aiba Masaki (30) visited Minato Village at night. During the story of this disaster, most families at the time engaged in harvesting/fishing tangle in order to contribute to the reconstruction, all 3 members shed sweat while actually fishing it. On the other hand Matsumoto Jun (29) and Ninomiya Kazunari (30) covered the local fire brigade which has been training locals as firefighters in the riverside of the city. The 2 member also engaged in this activity while sporting the fire brigade's uniform.

hno shared his impressions after interacting with the victims, "The road of recovery continues, we felt part of this big force but after experiencing fishing tangle together our thoughts are now stronger than before". Ninomiya who interacted with them while training as a firefighter talked about the lesson learned, "The human connection or rather, feeling this strong sense of responsibility towards the younger generations".

During the live, in addition to the 550 fans of three prefectures affected, they also invited the firefighters and the families who trained them in fishing tangle. Since the venue was too narrow, they could easily reach the hands of the audience while performing their latest song, "Endless Game" and "Happiness" among other hit songs. Aiba excitedly commented, "Really really close! I felt a little embarrassed at some parts, but I think we all became one". Matsumoto talked about the future, "I'm really glad we all had the opportunity to come and meet you directly and even make you feel a little happier. We would like to continue delivering energy to Japan in the future".

Quote:

The popularity of five pines standing on a hill on the border of Biei Town and canal Kamikawa in Kamifurano has skyrocketed since they appeared in the "Pine of 5" ad campaign for Japan Airlines (JAL) starring idol group Arashi.

The landscape portrayed symbolizes the magnificent nature of Hokkaido, and it was first used in February and more recently at the end of May. In the latest commercial, all 5 members of Arashi walk towards the same direction and the story develops because the number of pines is the same as the number of members.

Around 10 groups of people appeared over the weekend on June 8th and enjoyed a photo shoot with the pines. One company employee in Sapporo, Inagaki Misaki (29) happened to also be a big fan of Arashi and she commented, "I heard about the location through an acquaintance. I'm glad I got see up close the trees that appeared in the CM". In response to its growing popularity, Kamifurano Tokachidake Tourism Association has prepared a guide tour for visitors and plans to distribute flyers during the following weeks.

According to a taxi driver in Sapporo, a group of tourists appeared and told him, "We want to go to the place where Arashi's CM was recorded" and some other drivers have also taken groups there under similar requests. The taxi fee to that area and around is 30,000¥.

Though Matsumoto, as a member of Arashi, has served as the host for NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen for 3 consecutive years, this is actually the first time for him to have a leading in a drama on NHK. This is also the first time in 15 years for him to appear on an NHK drama since his last one aired back in 1998 which was even before he made CD debut as Arashi.

The motif of the drama is "Furusato" which was the song made for the special corner in 2010's Kohaku Uta Gassen. Arashi members sang it on the Kohaku not only in 2010, but also in 2011, and in 2012.

The song was written by Koyama Kundo, and it expresses the nobility of hometown. The song has also been chosen as the compulsory song in the NHK National School Music Contest for this year (for Elementary School division). As this year will be the 80th anniversary year for the music contest, the drama adaptation has been planned.

In the drama, Matsumoto plays a young man named "Wataru" who left his hometown to Tokyo. Wataru once had a dream to be a teacher, but he could not make it come true, and became a freelance photographer for a travel magazine. The drama starts where Wataru returns to his hometown after he is given an order to take photographs in there.

By meeting with the local elementary school kids who are aiming to participate in the choir competition, his ex-girlfriend (played by Eikura Nana) who is an elementary school teacher, his old classmates, and family, he eventually regains his old dream to be a teacher.

Reportedly, there is a scene where Matsumoto plays a piano in the drama, so he is currently practicing for it. He left a comment, "Though my role is a photographer, there will be a scene I have to play piano, so I would like to prepare well for both before I attend the filming. I will do my best so that the viewers could find a delight in chorus, and also feel the power of music."

So I guess Furusato might be something to be included in their new album ? Kinda like what happened for Akashi in Popcorn
