I wouldn't call her the new queen. Personally I think she's been heavily marketed this year and it was also the year where she got her best album released. Plus she's still being insanely marketed by avex. I think people should wait till the next album from Ayu to see what happens.

yes. :)

several people have already said that it's because she (kumi) sold more albums/DVDs and those cost a lot more than singles, which is where ayu made most part of the total number of sales.

No I wasn't sarcastic I was just curious ^^ I see and thank you for the explanation. I suppose it is true. She had two albums and two dvds so I suppose you are right.

LOVE PUNCH sold a little more than 650 000 copies I'm sure. Thanks to the 2004 Kouhaku performance, it gained more sales in 2005.

LOVE JAM sold 400 000~ in 2005, but was released in the last Oricon 2004 week. It sold 228 000 that week... 228 000 + 400 000~ = 628 000~ :rolleyes The same thing happened with Ayu's MA in 2003-2004. 500 000 copies sold in the last Oricon week of 2003 and 600 000 copies in 2004.

And where did you get the L&H numbers? I know a very reliable Japanese website (Here, and it's from that site I got the sales of LOVE PUNCH/JAM) The website is not updated since 3 months. I doubt it sold 120 000 copies during these 3 months without promotion or something.

Koda Kumi's Concert Was SOLD OUT as well as her Tour was SOLD OUT.

"you" sold 109,905

I can see it selling just as good or have u forgot Exile single came out this week?

Birthday's Eve sold 44,294 that is good for a single that only has 50,000 copies

actually, all 100% of ayu's MA was included in the 2004 oricon sales, since it was released in mid-december.

again to restate the facts+add new numbers:
BoA "LISTEN TO MY HEART": ~932,000
BoA "VALENTI": 1,250,000
BoA "LOVE & HONESTY": ~650,000
vs.
Otsuka Ai "LOVE PUNCH": ~650,000
Ostuka Ai "LOVE JAM": 640,000+ [still selling]
Otsuka Ai "LOVE COOK": 335,000 [1st wk]

andre2907: selling out all the venues at a tour doesnt mean the DVD will do well in sales...

OK then, I just looked at the 2004 figures.

I saw in an article, but I guess you're site is much more reliable and everybody is saying that it sold that, so I guess you're right. But anyway, my point was: BoA is the best-selling female artist after Ayu with studio albums and she is. I doubt her next CD sells as well as her others, but her last CDs all sold well and over 600k.

I never said her tour wasn't sold out. o.O. I said she didn't made any proper tour in big venues like Ayu did.

I really don't think you will sell as well as Planetarium. It can surpass 200k, but the opening week is almost always 50% or 40% of the single sales, so I don't think it'll reach 259k.

- Ayumi popularity isn't going down. She don't sell 4 million copies anymore, but she still sell more albums than any other female artist [I'm not counting best albums, obviously] and she's the only female artist that sell over 300k of almost all of her last releases [Bold & Delicious, her lowest selling single in a long time, will sell more than BoA best-selling single].

Koda Kumi first #1 single in her peak - 70,000 copies in the first week
Ayumi lowest-selling single in a long time (since 1999, I think) - 80,000 copies

Koda Kumi best-selling album - 1,2 million copies
Ayumi best-selling album - 4 million copies

BoA best-selling single - over 100k
Ayumi lowest-selling single (since 1999, I think) - over 100k

Ai Otsuka last album - Over 600k
Ayumi Hamasaki last album - Over 1 million

I'm not saying Ayumi is better than any of this artists, PLEASE don't start fighting and complaining, all I'm saying is that all the popular Jpop female artists still sell much less than her. Maybe in the next years there will be a JPop queen, a new one, and I'm very curious to who it is, but I don't think Koda Kumi is the next Jpop queen [but she's selling alot and she may sell a lot next year, too. I hope so, because I like her].

I agree. Ayu has consistently sold over 300k singles lately. B&D (and forgiveness back in 2003) is an exception, but it has still sold over 100k. If you compare Ayu's sells with other artists like BoA or Koda Kumi, she's selling a lot more. She's still one of the highest selling artists in Japan, and she's still very popular.

marshey905 21st December 2005 02:06 AM

ayu is still high in the list =)

actually, BoA's highest selling single is just over 200k which i doubt that B&D/Pride will reach

it seemed like that u r thinking selling out big venues=higher sales for DVD

hikki's BML has now sold about 150k, B&D/Pride is 118k; intriguing to find out who is gonna sell more

comparing Best~first things~ w/A BEST is kinda unfair since 1.3M now could have meant 2m+ (or sumthing like that) in 2001. so i advise other members not to look at the comparisions literally

Actually her popularity is going UP. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure last year she was lower on the list than this year.

miracleofsuzaku 21st December 2005 03:21 AM

Congrats to all the artists that made it up to the charts, even though I don't listen to some of them lol.

I just wish they would've counted Mika's Best album though. That would jack up her sales number at least.

Ayumi doesn't sell 4 million anymore because Albums don't sell as well as they used to in Japan. So comparing these 2 sales mean nothing.

"Koda Kumi best-selling album - 1,2 million copies
Ayumi best-selling album - 4 million copies

BoA best-selling single - over 100k
Ayumi lowest-selling single (since 1999, I think) - over 100k."

Also im not fighting with anyone and Ayumi is losing her Popularity. I didn't believe it as first til some friends of mine in Japan told me so.

B&D/Pride only sold 117,956 so far.

edit:

I forgot Ayumi's Worst Selling Single was Poker Face selling 43,150 copies

Qt Mashi 21st December 2005 06:10 AM

well done AYU :)

Kikaru 21st December 2005 06:19 AM

Koda Kumi earned more because she sold two albums, and albums cost more than singles. But in term of sales, Ayu outsold her. Also this year Ayu's total sales increased by 400K from last year, so she's doing better.

Ayumi is one of the few female jpop artists that can stay at a 300K sales consistency. Ai's Neko no Fuusen took much longer than Ayu's B&D to sale over 100K, and Ayu sales as much as the several major artists (Koda Kumi, otsuka Ai, Mika Nakashima) normally sell in her first week. This year Mika's single Glamourous Sky and Yuna Ito's Endless Story did well because of NANA, but Ai beat Mika's best album on the charts.

Ayu might not be as popular as she is back in 2001, but she is still a very high-selling artist.

And GOOD JOB AYU:bshake :bshake
