I think it's pointless to compare the three of them as their styles are all different. And it's just numbers, doesn't judge their popularity. Three of them are popular in their own ways.

Just like her first best-of. Then the whole 12 singles scheme popped out of nowhere. It couldn't been the 12 singles because avex had to make sure it would sale... so that means something happen before that that made her very popular all of the sudden... Oh... And the second best did extremely well. Confusing, lol.

Well, let's see...

Ayu was really popular since the beginning. No wonder her sales and average is high. Though, she's declining right now. In the other hand, Kuu wasn't popular AT ALL when she started. She gradually sold more and suddendly was the hit girl. So yeah, it's normal that her sales and average are low. As for BoA, she was pretty well liked when she started. Her sales sort of declined like Ayu though. Ai has, to me, always been very consistant over the years. But she's relatively new, she only released 3 albums. I'm sure her sales are going to go up and up over the years to come.

I think koda started getting attention with her change of image "ero kawaii"
And singing the theme song of ff does helps abit > then a+nation duet with BoA and finally cutie honey I think this song helps her alot cos I really like this song of her and it's her 1st song I've liked so much. Until she regain to show more of her body makes me :headache

Ayu wasnt really that popular in de beginning. Her singles dont hit no. 1 hit since de start. Can only say her results were like Ai during her 1st album period.

Single "A" sold well mainly I think it's bcos of the 'rainbow' disc variation and the song trauma. and of cos her rumor of last single to be released.

Those sales can't be right.

Kuu
Albums = 5
Sales = 1926800 (1.92 million)
Average = 385360 (385 k)

That's like, the sales amount for just Best ~first things~

Impracticable 22nd March 2007 08:12 PM

The BESTS arent included, and even a Kuu hater like me knows before that her sales blew BAD.

Exactly. Plus there are factors linked to popularity like online sales, concerts and overseas fans which are rarely counted. They are three excellent artists who produce fantastic music which appeals to different fanbases.

Wow. Just, wow. There is nothing I can say in response to this that won't get me in trouble besides: This is why we can't have threads like this. -_-;;

Well before 'secret'...

truehappiness 22nd March 2007 11:01 PM

Wasn't "secret" technically the beginning of her "erokakkoi" look? D:

ayu_fan929 22nd March 2007 11:02 PM

^I believe it was with 'COME WITH ME' (and that single did poorly).

Raleigh 22nd March 2007 11:20 PM

^ Yeah but that was her first single with that image. Her following singles would be more successful.

Peger 22nd March 2007 11:34 PM

Kumi's a talented artist in her own right. I don't understand why people attack her for being a bit ****ty, I respect her for being herself in a society that looks down on her actions

Alessia_Tateno 22nd March 2007 11:40 PM

You forgot Namie ^^

9 Album (Exclused Original Tracks Vol.1 'cause it has unknown sales and her suite chic albums): 11,169,484
Singles: About 14,382,626 milion with 31 singles (and her CAN YOU CELEBRATE? single is this the most sold female single in Japan)
and 15,587,269 with the total sales of 31 singles + 4 singles of SUPERMONKEYS of 7 (the sales of the other 3 singles is unknown)

Nah, as someone said, COME WITH ME = Sexy Cover, Crazy 4 U = erokakkoi PV. then her 'feel my mind' album was released and Then Cutie Honey and secret's singles. 'feel my mind' wasn't really a success.

I did not know that. Not my favourite Namie song, but interesting fact.

What are the best selling singles ever? I've seen the album list and the artist list, but what about singles?

No... I was very good at it, but it's not a particular hobby =)

In this thread, I've just posted some statistics without mentioning what my intention was and with almost no commentary or conclusion... It's seemingly pointless, but it's not. It reveals people's opinions on the following:

1) If people think that album sales (and sales in general) are a good indication of a singer's popularity / success

2) Which singer(s) a person supports and why.

3) Which of the 3 singers (if any) do people think will dominate in the future.

4) Lastly, it shows that people's impressions are not always correct. As I said, I myself was surprised that Ai has higher original album sales and the higher selling single than Kuu.

:D I like you lol

to answer your topics here...

One, sales are not the best indicator of popularity. I mean, of course the general idea would be that, if sales are good, you're more popular, which you know, thats true, but....i mean, only to a certain extent. There's just too many factors in sales though, like the economy and the market, and what everyone should be thinking about now, is that CDs are kinda going out of fashion. I think the only reason why they are still here is that its the only like, universal method of media we have, and even that is dwindling with the availability of downloads.

Two...If it were up to me, I'd support ayu and kuu, only because I don't listen to ai, just never got into her stuff. I do support Ayu, I havent bought anything of kuu's yet...I don't really have munny for all those best albums...I'll probab ly buy them one day though, even the really old ones if I can find them.

hmm...i really don't know who will dominate in the future. I really can't see Ai anywhere in the picture. I think Ayu will stay Ayu and be strong for some years. Kuu... I feel like Kuu is still an amateur. I mean she's been here for years, but it's like, she's only gotten popular now...I think that we can expect to see some different things in the future from her and she'll probably dabble in more styles, so she'll be strong for a while too. I don't think either one will become as popular as they were or are now, but they won't be gone either. Ai...will probably be in there somewhere...but i dont really know about her...

now i like your thread...

Wow I didn't know either. I always thought Utada held that record but there's 4 places between her and Namie

truehappiness 23rd March 2007 12:13 AM

The majority of Ayu vs. Anyone comparisons are usually based on sales, and so far there has only been one who actually has outsold Ayu on more than one occasion..

Which is probably why it's so strong toward that person [although, I really don't know why people would get all competitive over that..

Well 'Chase' was released a year after 'erokawaii' and it still did bad.
