I agree with most of you said in this post, but I think I'd just comment in this specific part:
ayu and nagase's relationship lasted at around 7 years. What if the last years were all for convenience? Like, the relationship was already weary, and they didn't really have time for each other, and everything kind of froze gradually? If that happened, I don't think it would be hard to get over it, since usually you have gotten over the relationship right before it even ended. I always thought it was weird that ayu was almost never seem out there with him, but would constantly be caught without him but with her friends over bars and parties or whatever.

You have a point. If the relationship had indeed faded into something where both didn't really feel anything for each other then it would've been easier for Tomoya to move on so fast. If what they had just faded into friendly terms as they both said they did it would be easy for both to date.
It's hard to tell what was really going on... and no one will really know. Especially since both can show a different image of what actually happened. But I have a feeling that both just had such a busy schedule (especially Ayu) that eventually they just got tired of trying to sort out how and when to go out/meet up. Maybe Ayu felt lonely when Tomoya was busy and she wasn't and started partying with friends to the point that partying was more fun for her. Maybe Tomoya just wanted Ayu to get married to him and get a less busy schedule so they would have more time. My hunch is that he got tired of waiting and she chose her career over him.
Somehow when I read her lyrics I get the feeling that their relationship had its' ups and downs. The only time she seems completely happy is in "RAINBOW" era. "Close to you", "RAINBOW" and "Voyage" sound like she had felt like she had met her soul mate.
Things seem to change in "MY STORY" era though. "Carols" shows that they were going through problems and they had broken up sometimes when they had problems. It shows a hint of insecurity too.. as if she feels she bothers him at times.
"part of me" was a sort of reassuring song, as if he was becoming less secure about their relationship and she seemed to force herself to show him that she was going to be there. Somehow I feel that despite the fact that they were both tired after work, etc, she still appreciated being the only one who could see that side of him as we see in "JEWEL".
Finally after their break-up, it seems that she wrote a lot about him and her lyrics are a bit hazy, as if she is not exactly sure of her direction. "GUILTY" and "dlma" seem to hint so. "Together When" reveals she still feels very strongly towards him despite of their parting. "Marionette" reveals that their relationship wasn't as rosy as the media designed it to be.
