Here's my preferred translation, using masa's as a base, but fiddling and comparing with other translations, and doing certain bits my own way.

Let me know what you think!

I think it's muuuuch better. :)

@SURREAL: Why would she have to love someone right now? XD

You are welcome.

Thanks for your suggestions. I change several parts as below, taking them.

Is so precious treasure to me --> Is such a precious treasure to me
So you would surely laugh at me, if you knew it --> So if you knew, you would surely laugh at me
you have precious one --> you have someone precious
your smiling face is telling of it --> it's clear from your smile
Feeling so sad --> Feeling so sad, so sad
(I think "painful" is too strong in nuance as the word for "setsunai".)
If only I think of you --> If I just think of you
Please let me stay loving you --> Please let me keep on loving you

And I have a question.
Some people are suggesting "one and only one wish" instead of "one and onle wish". But actually, I've never seen such a way of writing. Is it common among English speaking people now?

@Melrose

Thank you! glad you liked it :)

@Masa

I'm glad to see you've taken some of our suggestions,

I wasn't happy with "painful" either, but couldn't think what else to put there to repeat....I nearly went with "sorrowful".... The way you have it now is quite good.

as for your question, "one and only one" is a way to emphasise that there is only one of something, but I don't like how it goes in the song, it's the kind of phrase politicians and public speakers might use for emphasis and dramatic effect....does not suit the song.

also though, "one and only" (without the second 'one') is only used as an adjective. It is used for emphasis, but wherever it is used should also make sense if you used either "one" (on its own) or "only" (on its own)

e.g.
My one chance
My only chance
My one and only chance.

The one person I trust
The only person I trust
The one and only person I trust.

^these are all ok.

I have one wish
I have only wish
I have one and only wish

^This doesn't work.

In fact the use of the word "one" in the first two examples is different to it's normal counting function. Used in this way it is an adjective to signify something is unique, to indicate that there is no other person or thing that could be being referred to. It is therefore interchangeable with "only" in these sentences.

The phrase "one and only" therefore uses this meaning and doubles it for emphasis.

Some more examples where it is ok to use "one and only"
. e.g My one and only love, Your one and only chance, His one and only mistake, He is the one and only person whom I still trust.

I hope this helped!

I'm not great at explaining grammar...

[EDIT:]
I found a link detailing this meaning and usage of the word "one"; one

^ But still it was clear! Hahaha

AyUta 6th December 2008 05:19 PM

Aw, the lyrics are very touching. So straightforward this time around.

Thanks for your explanation. I didn't know that.
So how about "I have just one wish", simply?

And as for the word, "setsunai", I think it's one of the Japanese words that is so hard to be translated into English. The meaning is "sad", but with sweet and beautiful nuance. So it's not a negative word at all, and indeed, Japanese people like this word very much. For example, we say "Kono uta, totemo setsunaku te suki." (I like this song, because it's so setsunai.) Maybe there would be no English word just fit to this word.

ImpactBreaker 6th December 2008 06:24 PM

^Couldn't it be like: "I have only one wish" ? It would work fine in my opinion.

Also masa, on the last sentence there's a small mistake:

"Please let me I keep on loving you"

Just to remove the "I" there. And the "for ever" should be joined together to "forever".

Thanks a lot for the translations masa. These lyrics are so to the point. I don't remember ayu being so objective/direct in her lyrics like this.

Purple Neko 6th December 2008 06:30 PM

those are great lyrics! soo sad though ;_;
