And I honestly don't think Kyary will debut with a number higher than Colours ... She needs to stay steady and maybe even boost numbers a bit during the weekend. I truly thought this album would debut with like +100k copies '-' And no surprise JUNHO's mini-album is #1, his first mini-album debuted with 61k, this might get near the same..

Honestly speaking (from my perspective) you're the one who's been attacking Tomochin from the very beginning. I'm a fan of many J-acts, including Ayu and AKB. When I first learned that they both are going to release an album at the same date I was a bit anxious. I don't want to see Tomochin rank low, on the other hand I wouldn't want to see Ayu lost either. I wasn't surprised at all about the ranking since I've already guessed that Ayu would rank higher than Tomochin and turned out I was right. Probably not many Tomochin's fans expected her to outrank Ayu or anything since her sales has pretty much declined over time. Your signature and your remark about "at least she beats Tomochin" is completely unnecessary. From what I see, you're the one who keeps comparing them. Why not compare her with someone else? Why do you keep picking on Tomomi? It's perfectly fine for fans to wish the best for the artists they support but there's no need to bring other down to prove that your bias is 'doing better'. Oh and regarding Acchan only releasing 3 (actually 4) singles with 'not as high' sales nowadays, it's mainly because Acchan focuses more being an actress. She didn't intentionally want to be a full fledged singer. Acting is her main goal, singing is a side job. Not to mention that her latest single is clearly tinged with rock influence, something her fans not used to and this is perhaps one of the reason why it didn't fare too well, though declining sales on solo acts (including AKB graduates) isn't that uncommon.
Now if you just try to put yourself on others' shoes, imagine if Kazumasa's fan said: "Damn, Oda only landed on 4? Well at least he managed to beat Ayu. AYUMI FREAKING HAMASAKI!!! once THE EMPRESS OF JPOP!!! HA!" Now that doesn't feel so good, does it?

Oh and don't just go and say you're a fan of AKB and such, sugar-coating your excuses, because from the eyes of fans and wotas you're clearly not. No real fan will regard their idols so low.

I'm really surprised with the new top 3 and their sales. I hope Kyary can get the No.1 !!!

AKB's earning comes from the fans of 82 GIRLS. Counting from the last election, the most popular girl got around 150K votes. That shows the more accurate number of ONE girl's fans.

In the last yahoo headline did anyone see at least that they mentioned the achivement ayu got with Colours? lol

Now ayu has the most top 10 albums for solo female along with matsutoya yumin (47 albums).

Probably includes all official Original/Compilation/Mini/Remix/Live albums.
If ayu will keep releasing a few more albums in the next few years (even being #10 weekly) she will probably be safe at the top of the record for solo females.

Colours sales far exceeded my expectation. I was thinking maybe only 20k so this is a huge relief.

I think she could have still done more to promote it by appearing on live shows to talk about it and perform some songs from the new album. I mean she's the face of the ayumi hamasaki brand after all and it would be good to see her personally endorsing it (I still don't feel that magazine interviews count cos that proximity to the fans and public is very diluted compared to seeing her live).

But as long as she has enough sales and funds to continue doing what she's doing I suppose that's something to be grateful for.

I think Kyary's low first week is what surprises me most. Nanda Collection sold over 100,000 first week. This is like -60% one year later.

It's awesome that she can still get so close to beat records when she doesn't seem to interest Japan that much anymore. :)

In case someone's still curious about albums outside top 10, they were ayu-mi-x 5 (#18), ayu trance 3 (#14) and ayu-ro mix 3 (#13). All released in 2003. I'm pretty sad for ayu-mi-x 5 though. I think it's quite good, but oh well, shit happens. :)

Looking at the current sales for single females, Ayu is doing really good. I don't think Ayu is not popular in Japan (of course not as much as she used to) I think it's just nowadays Idol bands are the thing. For instance, Kyary's sales aren't way higher than Ayu's and she's more recent. Namie's the exception.

Maybe I'm missing somebody. Is there any popular solo female singer in Japan right now apart from Namie, Kana Nishino or Kyary?

Aswell as the examples brener gave of miwa and aiko, there's Mizuki Nana and ayaka. Whilst not as popular as Namie or Kana, their latest albums have sold around 100k, and their singles sell well; Mizuki typically does better with physical copies, ayaka typically does better with digital copies. JUJU's album released this year also sold around 100k.

I know they're not a solo artist, but ikimonogakari (only the female member sings, I've heard there is one or two album tracks/b-sides where one of the male members sings out of 6 albums and 27 singles) are popular.

I wonder with how many copies Colours will debut in Gaon Foreign Albums Monthly. Considering that this album, soundwise, is more appealing for the korean audience. Ballada from Namie debuted with 482 copies on June ^^

Last albums sales in South Korea according to Gaon:

Party Queen: 301
LOVE again: 306

Those are the numbers she sold on the release month, Gaon only report numbers monthly ^^ She has a quite solid fanbase of 300-350 people there lol

it's normal, the "1st day" of the new week actually still doesn't include the new releases of that week, so when the new releases come up on the next day the old releases tend to go down a lot...

I think it's normal due to new releases

it's holding up pretty good for its 3rd week, I was expecting a huge drop to be honest. By the way I also think that numbers won't be that bad this week, 5k wouldn't be a bad guess.

It was only released physically yesterday in Taiwan, so it's way too soon to know since they only do weekly charts there.

Digitally it was released on July 2nd though.
Right now she ranks #156 in the top albums on iTunes Taiwan, and #4 in the J-Pop top albums behind YUKA, SNSD's Japanese best (preorder) and Namie's Ballada.
