^okay just checked you live in Japan. Then I understand :=)

ExodusUK 10th June 2020 11:55 PM

Is it me but has her accent changed a little bit from living in London?

visionfactory 21st June 2020 03:02 PM

Have you guys listened to her 2008 remaster albums? I was planning to buy ULTRA BLUE but by the previews it didn't sound different. Is there any remarkable difference in them? (Like A COMPLETE songs)

thinkingoutloud89 21st June 2020 04:19 PM

^they probably sound better on headphones - then again, UB was mostly made on an apple and should already be fine in it's mixing as it was mostly digital to begin with.

Katsuyuki012 10th July 2020 07:14 AM

"Time" will get a PV! It has been filmed in her room and it will be coming out soon. I don't expect too much from it but it's certainly better than nothing! It has a really cozy feeling to it, which fits the vibe of the song, imo.

Here's the teaser:

minkAYuko 12th July 2020 09:51 AM

Hey guys! Have we seen this by miracle Hikaru?

Pretty cute

Katsuyuki012 27th July 2020 01:49 PM

The PV for "Time" will premiere tomorrow!

koumori 27th July 2020 01:57 PM

I can't wait for the music video! She's still on such a creative roll, she hasn't stepped wrong since she returned from hiatus.

Please knock on wood before we get an announcement that her next single is Boku wa kuma pt.II or something :laugh

Katsuyuki012 28th July 2020 04:56 PM

Well, the video is out now! :) I really like those effects they added, that was a nice idea and rather unexpected. Definitely made the whole thing more interesting! Hikki looks absolutely breathtaking! :heart

They used a different version for the video - it's about 1 minute and 20 seconds shorter.

Chris_Duvall 28th July 2020 05:00 PM

Love the PV! Time is quite good, but more of a grower for me.

summerain 28th July 2020 06:07 PM

I liked the shortened version, makes the video feel quite right, 'cause it's very simple and could be boring if it's too long. And the atmosphere fits the music so well, even Utada making the tune before social distancing (if I turn back time...).

tenshi no hane 4th August 2020 12:49 PM

I was going through my files when I found an unfinished translation of mine of her Rockin' On Japan interview. I'll post it here in case anyone's interested :)

ROCKIN’ ON JAPAN Interview 2017 - Partial translation
Spoiler:
ROCKIN’ ON JAPAN

NOTE: Utada talks about her first album in years, Fantôme. She announced a break from her music career in 2011 to focus on 'human activities'. In those years she moved to London, lost her mother to suicide, married and had a child. She looks back on Fantôme and all that’s happened.

Q: I’ve been looking forward to interviewing you again. It’s been a while!

U: It has. Thank you for your letter.

Q: No, no. Your album was just too amazing.

U: That makes me happy. Thank you very much.

Q: Well, your album is truly wonderful. That’s why it has received so much support.

U: I guess, yeah.

Q: How do you feel about it?

U: Hmm. You never know whether something is going to sell or not, right? But this time there was a big gap between releases, many things have happened, surface-level things such as my singing style have also changed and everyone was waiting 'I wonder what she’ll release this time?' — It was my first time to release an album in such a situation. I did wonder how people would receive it, but I’m happy I got a warm response.

Q: I felt it was really worth listening to.

U: No, no, no. Actually, what surprised me was that some people felt it was musically bland. I read some comments by reviewers and I was surprised they wrote the arrangements weren’t particularly new. When I had asked some of the arrangers I’ve worked with in the past to join in, they listened to my demo’s and what I wanted to make, and they said to me "So fresh!". When we were discussing the album title, they even joked "Can’t we just call it 'Fresh'?'

Q: Hahaha. In other words, the taste of my fellow traders in this business is the traditional Utada Hikaru, the programming one, huh.

U: Yeah. Well, it’s quite glittery and pretty.

Q: I think they had a particular image in mind and they were a bit floored when you released something different.

U: I see!

Q: That’s why I think this album proved that the users have better ears than the industry figures. I also heard people around me say "Utada Hikaru is quite bland this time 'round."

U: You did? Wow.

Q: I lashed back, 'What the hell are you saying!?', of course (laughs).

U: I thought I was really pushing like never before, actually (laughs). Well, I did mature obviously, how to put it, there’s a more calm soberty to this album. Maybe that’s why people felt it was bland or not very flashy.

Q: But people did truly listen to it.

U: Yes, yes.

Q: It had a strong reaction, not just in Japan but all over the world. I think this really encouraged you. Did it?

U: Yes, it did. I felt it’s alright to do things naturally. It really gave me courage.

Q: When I first heard Manatsu no Tooriame, I was so moved I didn’t know what to do with myself. I ended up writing you a letter (laughs).

U: It made me really happy when people who make music or work closely with music told me 'Amazing!'.

Q: Thinking Utada Hikaru has become able to make this song almost made me cry.

U: (laughs) I was defenseless like never before. While I did always express the things I couldn’t say in some way or another, it wasn’t until my mother’s death — leaving my private situation suddenly exposed to everyone — that I had nowhere to hide. I felt I had no shield to guard myself with and I was able to throw everything out like 'Waah!'. It took a lot of courage to let everything come out freely and honestly. Although I still work the same way as I did before, it’s like I was working inside a forest before, whilst now I was working on a plateau, without a place to hide.

Q: That’s why your melodies and words changed.

U: Yes, I see.

[…]

Q: Why did you decide to take a break on your activities?

U: Hmm, I don’t remember when exactly I said I wanted a break, but… it was after This Is The One.

Q: How was your overseas tour?

U: It was very fun. I haven’t done many tours, so there were many firsts. Fans outside of Japan are very passionate. They’re not nervous or shy at all. They pulled me along instead of the other way around. And it was interesting to see people from many different countries and religions. It was like being at an United Nations meeting.

Q: Hahaha.

U: Really, there were people from many different cultures. Girls wearing Islamic clothing, for example. Even so, everyone would sing along to my Japanese songs. It made me feel the power of music. Some time after this, I started thinking "Is it alright to go on like this?". I had many friends who are in show business, which is very partial. I thought, "Ah, I’m becoming an entertainer!".

Q: Hahaha.

U: People often tell me "You’re very normal" when I first meet them, so I mistakenly thought I had a normal perception of things. But people only say"You’re very normal" because I wasn’t as unnormal as they had thought when they actually meet me. I’ve been in strange surroundings since I was 15 years old. I was constantly given special treatment, I didn’t have to do things normal people have to do and did things I wouldn’t have to do. I ran into more and more situations that made me realise "Ah, I’m starting to become strange". I felt I looked bad. I decided it was best to move away from Japan, where I would always special treatment, and live a normal life. To become a proper adults. That was my main reason. But if I’d go to New York, where things were already in order, I wouldn’t change much. So, I wanted to go somewhere I hadn’t lived before. Somewhere I’d have to build up my life from scratch. I decided, "I guess I’ll go to England". It’s part of the English-speaking world, after all. I had a few acquintances there, too.

I started living in England. I signed my own mobile phone contract, paid the water bill, rented a house, stuff like that. I did all those things for the first time. I started going to the supermarket every day, clean the house. Having to do something can also be bad, right? Being chased by it. Like, I can live properly if I clear this. Having nothing in particular to do, I’d frequent the library to study an African language, took lessons to learn French, things like that. I also went to a school which had totally different ideas from me, not as a student, and helped work the fields. Just interacting with people, without judging which ways of lives or ideologies are good or bad.

[...]

koumori 5th August 2020 11:51 AM

That's such an interesting interview, thank you for the translation and share here. I always wondered how she'd speak on her decision to move to the UK, and she was pretty transparent about it... It's strange to imagine her doing all of those every day things in my home country :laugh I wonder how she feels about the days she spends now. It must already feel like so long ago.

I also loved reading more on her thoughts on Fantome. She's so honest about the feedback she received! I think the album has done so well since then, for me it's like a cornerstone release of the industry :tipsy

Kacku 8th December 2020 09:39 PM

New song announced! One Last Kiss, theme for the final Rebuild of Evangelion movie, will be released digitally on January 24th, 2021, and on CD and vinyl on January 27th with her all her other Evangelion themes! The other songs appear as remastered versions, and the Apple music page for this release also seems to imply that there's a b-side?

Also, as December 9th is the 22nd anniversary of Hikki's debut, her team collected 22-song playlists from artists, media outlets and industry professionals. They're also prompting fans to make their own playlists and share them on Twitter with the hashtag #宇多田ヒカル22. If you follow hikki_staff and share your playlist by January 31st, you have a chance at winning one of 200 One Last Kiss clear files. You can find the library of playlists (and the original instructions for the campaign) here: https://www.utadahikaru.jp/22songs/index.html

hud 9th December 2020 12:32 AM

super excited for One Last Kiss and its possible b-side!

mi|kshake 11th December 2020 11:53 PM

Yes, so happy there's another single release. Although I might try and save this one for the album!

Popped into this thread and heard Time and Darenimo Iwanai for the first time. Omg what a BOP! I love how they all switch up halfway through. I gasped the first time I heard Darenimo Iwanai and those synths came in! I love Utada's new music. Mature but intricate. They really grow on you. She's a master of her art!

thinkingoutloud89 1st January 2021 08:18 PM

Preordered the Vinyl, but still don't really know if I want it

bluegie 4th January 2021 04:02 PM

I did the same, preordered the vinyl but not 100% sure if I will keep the order in the end. Though I'm afraid one day I will regret not getting it. Just like now I regret I didn't get DR vinyl in the first place :shakehead haha.

minkAYuko 5th January 2021 05:56 AM

Like why order it in the first place I dun get that. I ordered the CD one ^_^ pretty excited!

bluegie 5th January 2021 12:17 PM

CDs can be still ordered after years (well not 10+ for sure), but vinyls are usually sold out in less than a year.

Anywayz last year none of her songs really gave me much impact, but I have a great feeling on this one. Hopefully the full song will totally blow me away :D

thinkingoutloud89 5th January 2021 04:15 PM

^the Vinyl is limited, only one per person to order. I just don't know if I want a vinyl with 6 songs on it for 40 dollars.

bluegie 5th January 2021 08:38 PM

Yeap, that's the reason I'm in doubt. But I like Rei the most in the anime, and those older songs are included (I think Beautiful World, Sakura Nagashi, etc. were never released in vinyl format right?).

thinkingoutloud89 5th January 2021 09:49 PM

^not yet no, but they are new mixes

bluegie 6th January 2021 05:46 AM

I think they're remastered, not new remixes (unless you're talking about the unknown tracks 2 and 8, which people suspect they are BW new remix and its instrumental respectively).

thinkingoutloud89 6th January 2021 01:14 PM

yeah I meant remasterd, sorry

3Beautiful World -PLANiTb Acoustica Mix- [2021 Remastered]

At least the quality is much better in that new (same) trailer.

Personally my mind is so ready for the new song, so it's hard to tell me to pull off the plug. On the other hand, it's the wise decision to postpone the movie if there are COVID spikes in Japan.

Deep snow 24th January 2021 11:39 AM

so sad about the postponement, but I think it's for the best. I don't think the covid situation would allow for a theatre-going experience so they definitely should postpone release if they're not considering a streaming-service direct release.

I can't believe I found out about this postponement news from -this- thread on an ayumi forum though :laugh

so excited about One Last Kiss. from the first trailer it sounded just OK for me, but weirdly the 15-second spot made the song grow on me by a lot.

Somehow I've JUST watched Laughter in the Dark on netflix today. It was beautiful, but also felt really sombre.

Has anyone pulled the translated lyrics subtitles off of it and put them anywhere? I could tell they were translated by Hikki pretty quickly. They're not direct, but impart the feeling. It was an interesting watch for sure.

holy shit? now I'm excited—about thirty minutes to midnight in Japan now.

I'm also so so excited about the new Evangelion movie. we've waited since 2012 for this and I'm so anxious about what kind of thing Anno has in store in this last movie. the runtime is two and a half hours(!) so I hope it wraps up everything neatly!

pheonixflame15 8th March 2021 07:09 PM

On YouTube now. Best thing she’s put out in the past few years

Gubsi 8th March 2021 07:11 PM

phenomenal. i love every single song this era and this one especially. the video is adorable and the song is right up my alley. can't wait for the album :heart

Katsuyuki012 8th March 2021 07:13 PM

I adore the aesthetic/vibes of this video. The song is really great, too! She definitely did not disappoint. Sakura Nagashi will always be my favourite when it comes to her Evangelion tracks but this is so, so good!

Deep snow 8th March 2021 07:15 PM

another exceptional homemade production from Miss Utada :laugh

man, imagine casually strolling through a London park in the middle of national lockdown and running into her and a friend in the middle of lip-syncing to the song :luv2

桜流し is devastating, which perfectly captures the sensation of having finished Evangelion 3.0. it's a beautiful song but a heavy one to listen to.

Akutenshi 8th March 2021 07:20 PM

Ugh, this song is magical. It starts out so simple, but the way it builds itself and releases by the end is just stellar. She has not missed a beat with these songs.

bluegie 8th March 2021 07:22 PM

This made my day. I was so worried that none of her post-Hatsukoi singles excited me at all, so when I heard the teaser on Dec 24, it got me really excited.

The full song doesn't disappoint me, and in fact gives me quite a few surprises. This will definitely be my gem hikki song in this era. While hikki is bad at lipsyncing :P (lol), the scenery in the mv is great. Thanks Hikki, her small team, and Anno to make this beautiful video!

koumori 9th March 2021 02:47 AM

I'm blown away by both One Last Kiss and the new version of Beautiful World on the single (the Da Capo one). What a gorgeous pair of songs :weep The music video was just the perfect set of visuals to go with this era as well. She never disappoints!

summerain 9th March 2021 02:50 AM

She provided new vocals to the Da Capo one, it isn't just a remix. Really loved that version. One Last Kiss uses some dancehall elements, which was trending a few years ago. I thought it was a bit strange at first, but then I remember this final installment of Evangelion would be released years ago, so maybe this song was ready to be released for a while too.

I wonder if she filmed this before the pandemic.

Ashen Twilight 9th March 2021 05:56 AM

I hope we'll get a new album this summer/autumn!

Zeke. 9th March 2021 07:35 AM

New song is great. Like the way it builds, 3:33 onwards is particularly special.

Xianghua 9th March 2021 08:31 PM

It definitely gets stuck in your head!

I also like the De Capo version of beautiful world. The original is one of my favorite hikki songs ever and I’m grateful to have a variety of versions. Although I realize now we have a 2018 AND 2021 remaster.

thinkingoutloud89 9th March 2021 11:49 PM

Hm, its a cool song but nothing to write stories about.

Meat Pao 10th March 2021 11:42 AM

The video already has 3.2 million views (in 2 days) :o drop that album sis!!

Gubsi 10th March 2021 12:05 PM

seriously i'm really excited for her next album...
the way she plays with song structures and experimental soundscapes (but still make it accessible) lately really doing something for me. also she knows how to create a mood with her voice.

with PINK BLOOD being her fifth single we can expect the album around august/september at the latest i guess

Gubsi 10th March 2021 01:29 PM

btw during summer they will release an international version of the OLK vinyl with the character Asuka on the cover...
http://www.utadahikaru.jp/en/music/album/title_20.html
my theory is that it will come out with the international release of the Evangelion 3.0+1.0 movie (there are rumours it will be available on amazon prime)

also One Last Kiss was co-produced by A.G. Cook who is known for his hyperpop productions on Charli XCX and SOPHIE. god i love this woman

Meat Pao 10th March 2021 02:52 PM

It's #2 on the albums chart today with 29,747 copies sold — for some reason I kept thinking this was a single until I double checked that it's classified officially as an EP lol (although I wish they would re-tag the album as such on Spotify so it wouldn't be grouped with all her studio albums...)

One Last Kiss is a good song, kinda of chill but so good. The MV is beautifully aesthetic, looks like we're in a walking simulator with Utada herself. :ytongue

my theory is that it will come out with the international release of the Evangelion 3.0+1.0 movie (there are rumours it will be available on amazon prime)

god I hope you're right. I really cannot wait to see this film.

Totally agree! It's heavy to listen to and that's partially what makes it so good for me.

Gubsi 12th March 2021 01:17 PM

it seems they'll release a trailer or teaser for the "To Your Eternity" anime on monday, march 15th. so we can listen to a preview of the new song very soon. can't wait #pinkbloodinyourarea

Katsuyuki012 14th March 2021 08:41 PM

oh wow, it's not what i expected but i'm really digging this A LOT… :heart
this album shaping up to be exquisite for me. hope she's announcing the album soon

thinkingoutloud89 15th March 2021 04:23 PM

^its the other way around for me.
It's not what I expected but in a bad way. its the same thing like the last singles again - just an okay track. I need something cool and upbeat and the title was promising, but she wasted it.

koumori 15th March 2021 04:37 PM

I'm really excited for the full version of this! Thank you for posting the clip :)

I don't really feel this one as well. It didn't wow me like One Last Kiss did (I remember that you don't like that song tho :laugh). But this is just a 30s preview, hopefully the full song will be better.

Edit: Good that I like Rei more. Too bad tho cdjapan won't ship the vinyl until April... :(

thinkingoutloud89 15th March 2021 04:51 PM

^My Vinyl already shipped from them two days ago o-O
If anyone is interested tho, I may sell it to get Asuka.

One Last Kiss grew one me a lot - still, I was expecting something more fun from PINK BLOOD.
It's not like I don't like the songs, they just don't do much for me. The BW Remix on OLK had a greater impact on me than the a-side lol

Katsuyuki012 15th March 2021 08:52 PM

So far I like Pink Blood but it hasn't grabbed me yet. But I'm excited to hear the full thing. :)

The One Last Kiss video finally reached 10M views today – just one week after its release!

hud 15th March 2021 09:17 PM

I really like Pink Blood!

mi|kshake 16th March 2021 03:28 AM

I cracked and listened to One Last Kiss which sounds great!! But gonna be good and save Pink Blood for the album!

bluegie 16th March 2021 07:44 AM

^Really hard to resist One Last Kiss. It's like the end of the EVA journey and can't complete without this song. I hope the last movie will release on Netflix or some streaming services later. Watched the last three in December and can't wait for the last one.

I know why.. Cuz Japan is still suspending registered airmail and EMS to Canada O_O. While non-registered airmail is still an option, I'm not gonna risk and change to that method.

I'm ok to the BW Da Capo Remix, but still prefer the original version.
