Yuki Kajiura, Creator & Composer Behind Kalafina, Leaves Agency And Group

After 25 years with the talent agency Space Craft Produce, musician and composer Yuki Kajiura has decided to leave the company.

Kajiura has been a prominent force within the anime music scene for decades. The musician has been behind the music used in popular series such as Fate/Zero, Sword Art Online and .hack//Sign.

In addition to creating music, Kajiura created the FictionJunction project. She is also responsible for creating Kalafina, a female music group known internationally, particularly for their works featured in anime series.

Kajiura has been the main creative force behind Kalafina, guiding the group's direction since the beginning. Kalafina will continue without Kajiura, though the musician acknowledged that the group's status and sound may end up changing without her.

According to reports from news agency Sponichi, Kajiura's departure from Space Craft Produce came after new management was put in place that she had difficulties working with. Her new manager was brought on board in 2016, and the two could not agree upon the direction of her music.

In another report by Sponichi, the media outlet cites a sources close to the group who claims that the members of Kalafina are having a difficult time coping with Kajiura's departure. The group currently has no activities planned, and discussions regarding future activities have had a difficult time moving forward.

Kajiura will be working on a freelance basis for the immediate future.

Wow, I never expected that something like this might happen. Never even imagined Kalafina existing separately from Kajiura, but of course they would be under a different contract. It's sad that their working relationship comes to an end like this.

However... I haven't been impressed by anything Kalafina has released during the last few years and I've felt like Kajiura's sound and songs have been kind of uninspired, so best-case scenario? Kalafina's music might get a shot in the arm and be better than it's been for a while. Not sure how likely that is, but I want to hope for the best, for both them and Kajiura.

Started out as a rumor before their 10th anniversary, now it's confirmed by Kajiura herself and in February 2018 that she's leaving for good.

Kajiura stated before there will be a new single in spring for Kalafina, but this news makes their future undecided (although Kalafina is about to release a documentary movie regarding their 10th anniversary + their future projects, now it's unknown whether their future means a future without Kajiura or disbanding, or etc.) and now Spacecraft is considering to hire someone else to direct Kalafina, which is very hard.

Seriously, Kalafina without Kajiura is just like... Haruna Luna, or other singers who worked with her before (some of them are still working with her) like Nanri Yuuka and Kaori Oda. No more Kajiurago, no more classical rendition of their older songs, it will become very different. At this point I'm just hoping FictionJunction will be back.

Wakana and Keiko are also part of FictionJunction, I wonder how they feel about this.

Also, Kalafina became a trending topic (Twitter) in Japan several weeks ago because of this news. To my surprise, I never thought this news was very big and Kalafina popularity is actually high demand.

For me their last songs are not as amazing as their first ones, but it' really hard to imagine Kalafina without Kajiura.
I hope they can continue.

Kalafina disbanding at the end of Spring

Vocal group Kalafina is said to be disbanding at the end of Spring.

The catalyst for the group falling apart is due to Yuki Kajiura making her departure from SACRA MUSIC, which is a subsidiary of Sony Music.

Kajiura was a “support” member for the group, while she didn’t appear in promotional pictures and videos she was responsible for many duties behind the scenes. This includes composing, arranging, producing, and providing backing vocals.

While it was reported that the group would continue on without Kajiura, things eventually fell apart behind the scenes.

On March 11th the girls held a live event, and after that their schedule is virtually blank. Their radio show Kalafina Club is still happening, but an announcement has already been made that the final episode will air at the end of March.

It’s rumored that the sudden stop, and eventual departure of Kajiura and the group will put a huge burden on their office resulting in an alleged blow of 2 billion yen. Kalifina isn’t the only one suffering from issues with their office, last year both Rola and Mariya Nishiuch went head to head with their management.

Kalafina made their debut in 2008 with the release of their single Oblivious, theme song for the anime series Kara no Kyoukai Fukan Fuukei. They have went on to gain notatriy among anime fans by providing themes for Sora no Oto, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, and Rekishi Hiwa Historia.

They released 5 studio albums, and 21 singles.

Ok, let's clear things up, Kalafina is not disbanding, but only one member will leave the group. One of my friends who is the member of Harmony (Kalafina Fan Club) is confirming this news, so we decided to go with this news, and it's official as well.

Quote:

As many of you may already know, there are rumors about Kalafina's disbandment due to Yuki Kajiura parting ways with her and Kalafina's shared agency.

No official statement has been made by Kalafina's staff. However, the Harmony Fanclub members have received a message concerning Kalafina's future. It states that although Kalafina will not disband, one member will leave the group and the remaining members will continue as a duo.

Currently, Kalafina are still scheduled to appear in events through to the end of March. We hope this post will help to clear things up. :)

The Harmony Fanclub e-mail contained the following message:

"To Harmony Fanclub members,

Today, news concerning Kalafina has surfaced from one media outlet, so we would like to inform the fan club members of the following.

One member of Kalafina has expressed intent of leaving the group, and upon receipt of said request, we have decided to accept it. The two remaining members will continue activities with our agency.
While giving utmost respect and importance to Yuki Kajiura's works through activities intended to express passion for said music, we would like to continue with our plans that all of the fans will enjoy and will be happy about.
We shall announce them soon.

We would like to ask for your continued support.

March 13, 2018
- SpaceCraft Produce"

Again, we would like to clarify that Kalafina are not disbanding. Regarding the change in their member lineup, we would like to encourage everyone to continue supporting Kalafina in the future.

Still a better news rather than just disbanding, yet Kalafina won't be the same anymore.

I'm guessing the one who is going to leave is either Keiko or Hikaru. Why?

The recent 10th anniversary pamphlet interview reveals Hikaru's thoughts for so long, she said that her voice is somehow out of place, and saying that the combination of Keiko and Wakana is the true sound of Kalafina.

Keiko's interview was rather simple, something like, "Wherever Kajiura is going, I will always follow her." So, yeah.

Surreal17 13th March 2018 10:04 PM

I'm also thinking the same thing. I'm glad that they are not disbanding but I really want to know who is going to leave. Whoever is it, it's definitely not going to be the same.

mellody 14th March 2018 05:35 AM

Speculations and rumors said, Keiko is the one who leave. There's even a tabloid pic something, but let's just wait.

Kalafina is a duo without the alto voice? I'm not sure anynore if I'm still interested.

Yoake 14th March 2018 02:47 PM

To me with a member leaving it's the same than disbanding. :/
Yes we'll get new music but without Kajiura and three voices, it'll be as a new band or a bad copy. And I can't imagine how their old songs'll sound in concert now.

CatGirl 14th March 2018 08:40 PM

Apparently Keiko owns the trademark to the name "Kalafina," so if she leaves, the group might have to be renamed. The whole situation is pretty sad - I was never super into Kalafina but I love Yuki Kajiura, and it just sucks seeing things go down like this.

I have to agree. Lineup changes in Japanese/Korean groups are, for some reason, more critical than in American groups. Tohoshinki might still be performing well, but they're definitely not as "hot" since the departure of JYJ. I mean, I'll take a Changmin pill any day of the freakin' week, but Tohoshinki is just not the same.

Imagine how Perfume would seem if they lost a member? I'm slightly traumatized just thinking about it.

I think if kalafina reforms as a duo under a different name, maybe with another dedicated composer, that may work out well. I'd love to see the girls try new things with those voices too. I've always found gems in kalafina's albums, but I've also thought they're too constrained in terms of what they can do vocally.

Maemi 15th March 2018 10:47 AM

Even if only one leaves the group won't be the same - ever again.

I have to agree with this.

Kalafina as a trio has three different voices, Wakana as Soprano, Hikaru as (somehow) mezzo-soprano, and Keiko as alto. If Keiko is no longer part of the group, then it's only Soprano and mezzo-soprano and some of their songs can't be performed very well, since Keiko's low register is very unique and irreplaceable.

I'm quite surprised that this news about Kalafina garnered quite a lot of attention. I never thought many people like them even though they are quite popular now.

adantatu2 19th March 2018 06:42 AM

Kalafina without one of the girls would not be the same. It would be difficult to keep promoting as Kalafina without the main producer/composer and without one of the talented girls.

Surreal17 13th April 2018 05:46 PM

Keiko left Kalafina.

adantatu2 16th April 2018 02:19 AM

Keiko was always my favourite, her deep voice, her visuals, I'm going to miss her a lot. I don't know if the other 2 girls will continue with Kalafina, but I hope they don't add a third one.

Ashen Twilight 16th April 2018 03:11 AM

Mine as well. Songs that she had the main vocal were always my favorite.

Yoake 22nd October 2018 01:39 PM

Wakana will release a song in solo called Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni

Kalafina will also release all-time best 2008-2018.

Sorry but kinda lazy to put the source, I was emailed by Sony (I subscribed to Kalafina newsletter).

Yoake 26th October 2018 04:18 PM

I saw it in my e-mail via CDJapan. I think it's really the end even they did they'll carry on with the two last members.

Did we get some news about the next work of Kajiura?
