Maybe they felt that the girls were lacking this year....while the males have dominated this year (or last year for those who are in a new year!) Either way, I think it wasn't that many great performers this year anyway....I hope the next Kouhaku is better....waaaaaay better.

Before 2005 it was as if they teams took turns winning.

Unfortunately, together with Yoshimi Tendo, Ayumi got the lowest ratings of the second half of the show, at 36.4% in the Kanto region. The average ratings of the second half were 39.5%.
One could ponder how much this really matters, though.

Her performance wasn't very good, though, while most of the second-half performers were really amazing. ;/

Ayu's Kouhaku TV viewership rating was 36.4%; surprisingly, it was the lowest out of the 2nd half performers.

But that's probably cause they don't wanna tire themselves before her CDL. ;) That, and her Kouhaku performances lately have been sort of lackluster, to be honest.

IMO she should stop singing ballads and start doing high energy songs. She sounds the greatest singing those.
