Eh? Why should fans buy something then? If it's not for showing support and the possibility of getting a No.1... stupid -.-

Andrenekoi 6th December 2012 01:19 AM

^How about buying it for the sake of having it?

A chart should show how popular a track is, and sometimes sales have very little to do with it, for example:

- In 2001 Mariah's Loverboy reached #2 on charts because once the label noticed she was flopping, they lowered the price to 49 cents and her fans started to buy several copies of it... still, the weak airplay prevented the song from reaching #1

- From 2008 to 2009 Mylene Farmer got 5 consecutive #1 singles, becoming the artist with most #1 on the french charts and breaking her own record single after single... This after +20 years career. Was she going through a peak? Not really, actually, none of those singles got much airplay or were successful outside of her fanbase... To the point of debuting in #1 and fastly going out of the charts... But her fans are older, they still buy physical copies when nobody else's fanbase did, so, even if her sales weren't anything special, the singles got good position.

If the goal is to show who is selling the most copies, airplay and streaming aren't relevant. But if the goal is to show how popular a track is, Billboard done the best move possible.

Chibi-Chan 6th December 2012 02:06 AM

^I mostly buy all the stuff from my favourite artists just for the sake of having it. But sometimes I just buy something from not very known artists just to show support, but if it doesn't count why should I? In this case streaming would be better.

I disagree. Sales determine what the public likes. No fanbase is big enough alone to make a song go #1. Of course radio can still count but more than sales? Thats the reason why Gangnam Style got blocked from #1 for 7 weeks by a song that wasnt even close to being as popular. Shows how much power radio has. Not to mention labels can just pay them to play your song

Thats not true. People hardly even bought singles before the digital era. Radio counted even more back then.

Don't forget you are on AHS, the forum dedicated to the singer that broke the record for consecutive #1 in 2010 without having any real hit since 2006. You don't have to sell a lot to get a weekly #1, you only need to sell more than the other people are selling on that week... If they sell bad, you only need to sell a little "less" bad.

And even If I agree that selling milliosns of copies of a single shows it is a really popular song, you can sell millions with small numbers each week and never actually reach the #1, or even top 5, on the same way a strong fanbase can buy a massive number of copies once the song debut, and after that she song fall hard because very little people out of that fanbase actually cared.

I think it's kinda dumb to compare the japanese market to the US one, considering singles and albums don't usually have any longevity in Japan. Plus Oricon is based on physical sales only. No singles chart is really relevant anymore in Japan tbh.

The only thing that actually makes singles chart relevant on Billboard is that they actually take airplay and streaming in consideration, so, they actually can measure a song popularity, not only how many times the fanbase bought the audio file.

Also, the longevity in Japan depends a lot of the artist and on how much casual listeners they atract... Most Avex pop projects like Ayu, Koda, Ai, or most idols don't have much, you are right about that... But acts known out of the idol realm, like Hikki, tend to have pretty good longevity, as they actually atract casual listerners.

Hm, I am so confused. What is what now ?

inthezone 12th December 2012 10:15 PM

Okay she's definitely working on a new album/recording

Quote:

Speaking exclusively to That Grape Juice.Net this week, Blake revealed that he and the ‘X Factor USA’ judge had begun working on cuts for the release, explaining:

“I think her fans will be surprised by it. I would say its definitely the ‘unexpected’ Britney in so many ways, in that she’s playing with new textures and stomping on new grounds and genres”.

The mastermind behind Usher‘s Hot 100 winner ‘Climax’ and Rihanna’s reggae flavored ‘No Love Allowed’, the singer’s comments on the album came days before the release of his Roc Nation backed EP, ‘Bijoux 22′, and weeks after he reportedly joined the star and ‘Telephone‘ producer Darkchild for LA studio sessions.
