------------------------------------------------
You smile broadly and innocently
Happily with down-slanting eyes
You suddenly sulk like a child
You are easily moved to tears

If I start to line up what I like about you
The list goes on and on, however much time I may have

* Be yourself anytime, don't change
Be natural, stay as you are
Ah, cherish all that you have
Because you are the one and only
I suppose this feeling is
Surely what people call love

There was an incident
That I can make into a funny story now
There was an incident
That breaks my heart even now, if I remember it just a bit

Every one of my countless memories
Teaches me gently

** I don't need words, just stay by me
If you are next to me, I'm all right
Ah, what I feel for sure now
Is formless, but
I suppose this feeling is
Surely what people call love

Every one of my countless memories
Teaches me gently

* (repeat)
** (repeat)

Actually, this is the direct translation and I'm not so confident of it.

ureshi sou = look happy
mejiri = tail of one's eyes
sageru = down

If someone has a good idea of translating this line, please post here.

I looked it up and mejiri apparently is the "corner" of one's eyes?

mejiri sageru -> mejiri o sageru (目尻を下げる) to make eyes -> making a happy face or something?

( with slanting eyes, slant-eyed [-> 上がった] -> slanting eyes might be like when you smile really wide and your eyes get kind of small and slanty?)

I suppose people will surely call
This kind of thought love
I think this would be better if translated like:

I guess (or think or even 'perhaps') this feeling is
Definitely (or surely) what people call love
Or maybe that doesn't fit.. hm.

I dunno, when speaking about love, it's hard to sound poetic/original without being crazy, haha.

To: truehappiness

Thanks for your advice.

You suddenly smile innocently
Happily looking down with slanted eyes

But I think that "looking down" is not necessary.

I guess (or think or even 'perhaps') this feeling is
Definitely (or surely) what people call love

OK. But why do you think that "I suppose" is not good?

masa 8th April 2010 03:35 PM

In fact, there is another word I can't translate well. That is "kusha tto". I couldn't find this word in a dictionary. This means like "deform one's face as if rumple a paper" (when smiling). If someone has a good idea of translating this word, please post here.

Luja. 8th April 2010 04:41 PM

Thanks for translating this! I don't know much about Japanese so I can't help to improve it but I am so thankful this is here. I love the lyrics :)

Hm, smiling with a crumpled face sounds like that would fit, but a "crumpled face" doesn't sound right to me for some reason. Maybe we could use the word wrinkle here? oji-i-san, we need you~ Haha.

hehehe, I keep myself from listening to chaku-uta and LQ files. So, I haven't checked closely the lyrics of count down, Last Links, and this song.

Well, anyway I tried based on the romaji by creoh. (Thanks !)
As masa-san said already, it's tough to translate idiomatic phrases and imitative words, so this is just a suggestion (As Always!)
Quote:

嬉しそうに目尻を下げて
ureshi sou ni mejiri wo sagete
Happily making smile-wrinkles around your eyes,

くしゃっとあどけなく笑うとことか
kusha tto adokenaku warau toko toka
The way you smile broadly and innocently

子供みたいに急にふて腐れたりとか
kodomo mitai ni kyuu ni futekusare tari toka
The way you suddenly become sulky like a child

涙もろいとことか
namida moroi toko toka
The way you're easily moved to tears

好きなところ並べだしたら
sukina tokoro narabedashitara
If I count the things I like about you,

いくら時間があっても切りがないよ
ikura jikan ga attemo kiri ga nai yo
I can't count them all no mater how long I take time
One of things I'm anxious about is the word order of "Happily ..., the way you smile ..." (I chose the word order close to the original one but I know it may sound strange.)

masa 10th April 2010 07:08 PM

I changed the part like this. Though I still feel "kussha tto warau" and "smile broadly" is a little different. Thank you (especially truehappiness and oji-i-san).

You smile broadly and innocently
Happily with slanted eyes

I suppose this feeling is
Surely what people call love

oji-i-san 11th April 2010 04:44 AM

Thanks for your work as always.

I know "kusha tto warau" and "smile broadly" isn't completely same. Maybe you can express kusha-tto's nuance a little better by adding the word wrinkle anywhere in the two lines.

And you might like to see this dictionary page. Sorry if you know this kind of expressions already:
http://eow.alc.co.jp/slant+eye/UTF-8/

Yes. I always use this online dictionary. It's very convenient. But

slant-eyed 目尻の上がった

It's so bad. It shows that "slanted eyes" has the opposite meaning to the original lyrics. I change the part again like this.

You smile broadly and innocently
Happily with down-slanting eyes

Peruseusu 11th April 2010 06:23 PM

thx ^^

jon_the_d 11th April 2010 09:07 PM

hey guys!!!

Thanks masa, as always ;)

However,

in the first verse of the romaji you are missing part of the last line!!!! :O

I was listening and following the lyrics, and you missed some out, which also helps explain why the japanese is 5 lines and the english is 6.

Obviously my japanese is not great but the bit you're missing may sound something like this:

Quote:

Suki na tokoro narabedashita ra
[ikura jikan ga ano te no] kiri ga nai yo
can someone (masa?) please confirm how the romaji for the missing bit should be written? and also confirm the english translation is still complete?

Please? lyrics are very important to me >.< !!!

Thanks so much!

[EDIT]

Sorry I was in such a rush to find the 'missing bit' I didn;t properly check the whole thread. I see someone already suggested it should be:

Quote:

Suki na tokoro narabedashita ra
[ikura jikan ga anata mo] kiri ga nai yo
is that right?

the word you're looking for is SCRUNCH (or scrunch up)

scrunched is used more for faces than crumpled.

still think scrunched may be better for a smiling face.

sorry but both these don't sound right to me :/

slant eyed, or even down slanting, just gives me the impression of slanting. ie: like this \ or this /
so slant eyed is pointing out she's asian? lol.

i think if the lyric is describing that when they smile their cheeks raise, and their eyes do that manga style smiley eyes ^^, then you're closest bet may be simply to use SQUINT.

squint means narrowing the eyes, like when you strain to see something, but it also is used to describe this kind of smile.

so a line like "squinty-eyed smile", captures the expression quite well i think.

although how you phrase it may need some more thought.

but yeah.

scrunched is the best word for scrunching up your face, but may more often be used for unhappy faces or disgust, or disapproval,

squint definitely captures the squinty eyed smile, and gives a better idea of the expression than scrunched (or the other words considered).

I vote squint! ^^

(sorry for long post)

I agree that slanted eyes / down-slanting eyes are not good here.
haha, maybe i should've said it very clearly in my #39 post.

as for the missing romaji, I believe the line I wrote in my #37 post is correct. I'm happy if you could kindly give me any comments to my translation. I guess I'm on the side of a little liberal/free translation for this time. thank you!

This is the complete lyrics. Actually, I failed to write the phrase and that I didn't notice it. Sorry. I corrected the part. The translation doesn't change.

As for the translation of the first stanza, I'm rather confused. I need some thinking time.

"Mejiri o sageru" --- / \

jon_the_d 12th April 2010 01:45 PM

Thanks masa!

I'll try to think about the best way to phrase the first stanza too...

is this: / \ the representation of the eyes and the expression that ayu is describing?

SPANISH VERSION BY JAOMARU @ayuchile.com

ESPAÑOL

Tu amplia e inocente sonrisa,

Me enseña gentilmente

** No necesito palabras, sólo quédate a mi lado
Si estás cerca mío, estaré muy bien
Aaaah, seguro lo que siento ahora
es difuso, pero
Supongo que este sentimiento es,
Sin duda, lo que la gente llama amor...

Cada uno de mi sin número de recuerdos
Me enseña gentilmente

* Se tu mismo siempre, no cambies,
Sé natural, quédate como eres,
Aaaah, quiere todo lo que posees,
Porque eres el único y uno
Supongo que este sentimiento es,
Sin duda lo que la gente llama amor

** No necesito palabras, sólo quédate a mi lado
Si estás cerca mío, estaré muy bien
Aaaah, seguro lo que siento ahora
es difuso, pero
Supongo que este sentimiento es
Sin duda lo que la gente llama amor
