ayumi hamasaki and Girl generation...

i'm just curious....
in term of asian popularity...

which one is more popular....

:love:love

murasakinohana 17th June 2010 05:58 AM

I think they're both popular in Asia.. But of course, they're more popular in their respective homelands. Ayu in Japan, Girls Generation in Korea. But I don't think they're popular vice-versa. :shrug

y_nathz 17th June 2010 06:27 AM

They're both REALLY popular, and they got a lot of haters too..
But for today's public, especially the young ones *students* I bet girls generation is more popular since they made music for young people and this Korean wave thing..

Mirrorcle Monster 17th June 2010 06:25 PM

I think nowadays SNSD is more popular between teenagers (and teenagers are the main fanbase)

FIRSTKLAS 17th June 2010 06:27 PM

Ayu probably has more fans in Korea than SNSD has in Japan.

Don't know if that means anything though. :shrug

Crystal_Ageha 17th June 2010 06:31 PM

From what I've read, their albums only sell a little over 100K. That's a third less than Ayu's latest album, and even less than her last few, and.....you get it. Also, like the above post mentions, Korean bands/singers are rarely very popular outside of the country, but Japanese artists can get fairly popular throughout Asia (and Ayumi is one of these artists).

So unless I've read SERIOUS understatements on their sales, they can't even touch Ayu, not even at her declining point these days, let alone HER peak.

miroro 17th June 2010 06:35 PM

^u know that selling that much in korea is a lot?:laugh
snsd is truly truly popular in korea
and ayu is really popular in japan

and i think both are pretty popular in asia too:yes

Crystal_Ageha 17th June 2010 06:40 PM

^ Yeah, I know. And it's really impressive. For Koreans. .......Hell, I guess it's even fairly impressive for average artists in Japan. XD But for a popular artist in Japan, even the declining Ayumi Hamasaki..? It's a whole other level.

Japanese artists simply have an advantage over every other Asian artist, though. Japan has the bigger music market and the more popular acts. Koreans can come close sometimes, but..... Yeah.

chu-lips 18th June 2010 09:16 AM

i guess ayu is more recognizeable in asia....
in my country....indonesia
even the non-asian music listener know who is hamasaki ayumi....
tough they dont know her music but they recognize her better than SNSD...

hmm...
also in taiwan n hongkong,,,
as for i can see so far....
ayu always topping the chart in asian chart...
n in yearly chart she's always fight with superjunior in taiwan chart....

hmpph,,,
if i dont make a mistake,,,
SNSD held a asian tour right....
when they come to taiwan n hongkong...
was there any big phenomenon like ayu did when she arrived....

tetsuo69 18th June 2010 06:00 PM

i have no idea who the korean group is, so i cant give my opinion really XD

SURREAL__RAINBOW 18th June 2010 06:11 PM

ayu is more of a pop icon, and very well known by everybody. At least if you mention her name in China, Singapore, HK, they will know who you are talking about for sure.

the korean group is just another successful korean group but haven't yet become an icon... you need years to become one ^^

pimenta 18th June 2010 10:45 PM

I think that in general Ayu is more popular, but inside Korea SNSD is more popular fore sure.

waterballoon 18th June 2010 10:48 PM

oh OH oh! oh ppa I love u.

well errrrrrr dunno if they can even be compared for popularity is since one is a living J-Pop legend while the other is a 9-member Korean girlgroup who makes annoying songs like, "oh oh oh oh ppa i love u!" yet it's so catchy @___@

okay I'm not making sense.

tomiko8 18th June 2010 11:36 PM

Well obviously girls generation is going to be more popular in Korea because they are korean. However, world wide Ayumi is known at last to a certain extent because she's more than a fly by night singer..she's an artist as well as a pop icon. so to answer your question more directly in terms of popularity in korea Girls Generation would be deemed more popular (its their own field) in japan Ayumi would be more popular. As for world wide recognition Ayumi would win.

love in music 19th June 2010 12:47 AM

SNSD is not as successful and probably will never be as successful as ayu. I do love them, but they will not last over 12 years and still remain popular like ayu. I'd be surprised if they were still around in 5 years.

FIRSTKLAS 19th June 2010 02:55 AM

^Sadly, I think this is true.

Female pop groups rarely stay together very long before ego and ambition breaks them up. It seems like they're only together long enough for each member to accomplish some level of fame before moving on. I bet with SNSD, the more popular members will continue singing with solo careers, the less popular members will become TV personalities, and the least popular members will just fade away. :(

Keeping this in mind, I've decided to not let it bug me and that I'll just enjoy them for what they are and for however long they're together. I doubt neither of my favourite members would continue with solo careers and I don't find any of the lead vocalists that interesting so SNSD is it for me.

mcluva420 19th June 2010 06:43 AM

now with the Korean wave, SNSD is sorta catching up..

i have a feeling that SNSD is more popular in Asian infested cities in America than Ayu.. o_O

Olw---A 20th June 2010 07:17 PM

well I guess you probably compare Ayu with wondergirls who really started overseas (I mean out of Korea) promotions than SNSD who just start to do that... they'll focus on Japanese market so we'll see if they're really big all over Asia (included Japan)...

but Kara and 4minute are already doing that... and I think that morning musume are too popular in Japan to really give a chance to any korean girl group there...

Oh and considering the type of legend that Ayu built... you probably compare her to a big korean solo act.

elepop 20th June 2010 08:21 PM

Ayu has been active for more than 10 years now. She was once a HUGE and extremely popular idol. I'm pretty sure she was well-known all over Asia since 2001-2002, at the highest peak of her career. Even now, I think a lot of people in Asia a part from Japan know who Ayumi is. And she has lots of fans in HK, Taiwan etc too.

SNSD right now is super popular too though. More than Ayu? Maybe not. But the popularity they have gained since their debut (it's only been 3 years) is really impressive. They are really popular in Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan (or else, there wouldn't be a SNSD copycat group lol) and even in Japan (when it was announced that they were going to debut in Japan, it made into the news!). I'm pretty sure most people know "Gee" in Asia.

IMO, SNSD is probably more popular in Asia now compared to Ayu. But Ayu is overall more well-known.

hearted 21st June 2010 12:30 AM

^i agree :yes there even was a chinese snsd :roflmao

baka-ranger 22nd June 2010 01:24 PM

As a BIG BIG BIGBISDBGSDIFJSJ fan of both artists, in different ways but i love them both...you got me really excited. God I wish Soshi and Ayu meet in Japan when they promote there. Think the woman I respect the most meeting the girls whom I just adore like bigger sisters...yes I have become one of those lame fans. At least I don't call them unnie bahaha.

imo currently Soshi is more popular at this instant in time. They're around their peak popularity right now while Ayu's had declined years ago. Plus, everyone only likes Korean music now...part of the reason I just signed into AHS cause I wanted to spazz about jpop with people who actually know what it is ):

However in terms of the long run, Ayu's popularity peak was probably greater than Soshi's. Its kind of like comparing a Madonna with a Lady Gaga or Rihanna (god I don't know western music anymore) in terms of popularity. You can't tell at this point. However I believe Ayu's popularity is kind of legendary in Asia, since she still has quite a large fanbase even after all these years.

Its hard to explain cause there's so many different reasons why one could be more popular than the other. They both have wonderful large fanbases, yes I just have to say that I love Team Ayu and SONE's out of all fanbases, they're the only ones I can stand.

rant rant rant...fangirl in me won't let me write proper response but overall. I think Soshi's peaking now and thus more popular currently in society, while Ayu in the long run has had more impact and a greater/dedicated fanbase in the long run.

Cherry Dynamite 22nd June 2010 01:39 PM

In my school only few people listens to JPop and KPop (It's just not the thing in our school)

Anyways I still think Ayu has more fans than SNSD, Just because the media portrays KPop as the craze right now doesn't mean everyone likes KPop or vice-versa.

adantatu2 7th July 2010 05:56 AM

Ayu, SNSD are succesful on Korea

tamama1019 22nd May 2011 07:54 AM

snsd's song are catchy but ppl might not know them

i think KPOP is dominating Asia right now..nobody really gives a hoot about Jpop (no pun intended)..AND IM SAD/FRUSTRATED about it...argh...

so yea...there's my answer.

Of course, JPOP already DOMINATED Asia way before KPOP did...or should I say...JAPANESE CULTURE in general dominated in the past

Kana×Shin 22nd May 2011 05:12 PM

I do not like band girls group, Girls' Generation will probably be like another Tohoshinki...I don't think they will stay that long together as a 9 members,,,

hearted 22nd May 2011 05:34 PM

^every group will eventually disband, even the ones in your sig

bondingo 30th May 2011 09:10 PM

I love both Ayu and SNSD. I think at this exact moment we could say that SNSD is more popular because they're selling better and are all over in Japan, whereas we all know Ayu's popularity has been on a steady decline (her sales and quality of music as well). I think the real test will be after a few more singles from SNSD. Their album is obviously going to be an enormous seller, but I just wonder how long they'll remain popular. Either way, I'd rather them stay in Japan than Korea.

kendelle 17th June 2011 09:47 AM

I'd safely say Ayu is more popular.

Ayu is one artist who's now going strong for 13 years whereas SNSD has really only burst internationally since Gee.

The advantage SNSD and other multi-person groups seem to have are the number of members. Simply because you have up to 9 SoShi girls to be fans of the amount of merchandise available multiplies up to 10 times.

omably 23rd June 2011 06:13 AM

Ayu's Love Songs Sales: 272,653
SNSD's Girls' Generation Sales: 378,534

I don't even know man.

Twinkle ! 23rd June 2011 02:34 PM

^ that doesn't mean anything , Well no one can deny that SNSD has a very huge popularity all over the world , but I've never seen anyone who has %0000.01 knowledge in jpop and doesn't know who Ayu is :laugh

mizuki-7 25th June 2011 12:41 AM

Ayu is not a new singer like SNSD this number is not significative ^^

nayumoon 22nd July 2011 02:16 PM

I heard about SNSD's concerts in France (I don't know if it's true). And as I know Ayumi has never concerted in Europe (just visiting Europe like for example Rimmel CM). SNSD also recorded last time album in Japanese version. So Girls generation tries to show ownself and be popular everywhere...
I don't know who's more popular for today. SNSD can get popular because of music or because of appearance (like sweet&sexy style, boys love them because they're sexy, girls love them because they're sweet).
I love Ayu <3

CherryMoon 13th August 2011 12:34 PM

not sure about the younger gen like those around 10 year olds but i think Ayu has made a much greater impact in terms of popularity. from what i know, ayu is more recognised- they know who is she, how she looks, what she does though they dont listen to her but for snsd, they probably only heard of them but not sure much about them except that they are another kpop grp. Mostly because ayu has built her reputation throughout the years and snsd has been ard much shorter time.

emi♡ 15th August 2011 10:10 AM

I think SNSD is more popular, but Ayu has more status and is more known.
