[romaji & translation] Last angel

Actually, "kana" and "kara" are hard to tell from by hearing. So some parts might be wrong.
----------------------------------------------------
Kikoete iru yo ne anata nara
Tsutaete oki tai anata ni wa
Owari tsugeru kono kane no ne wa
Kanashii neiro nanka jya nai

* Naite ita ne sakende ita ne
Koe ni natte nakatta ne
Uso jya nai kara yume jya nai kara
Mezameru koto mo nai kara
Mou kuyama nai furikaera nai
Mae ni susumu shika nai
Itoshiku temo natsukashiku temo
Nido to ae naku temo

** Mune o hare nai ushirometai
Sonna koi mo atta
Hashaida yoru kodoku na asa
Kurikaeshite ita

** (repeat)

*** Maniau kana osoku nai kana
Mada hajime rareru kana
Mite te hoshii kanjite hoshii
Akirame nai de ite hoshii
Nige nai kara gomakasa nai kara
Kurikaesu koto wa nai kara
Soba ni iru yo dakishimete ru yo
Arinomama uketomeru yo

**** Tatta hitotsu saigo no hitotsu
Sonna ai ga aru
Shinjiru yoru kanaeru asa
Tenshi ga waratta

**** (repeat)
* (repeat)
*** (repeat)
--------------------------------------------------
I believe you can hear me
I want to tell you
"This bell sound announcing the end
Bears no sad tone at all"

* You were crying and shouting, weren't you?
Your voice sometimes ceased, didn't it?
Becuase it's not a lie nor a dream
Because I don't wake up
I don't regret nor look back any more
It's the only way for me to go forward
Even if I love you and miss you
Even if I can never meet you again

** I had such a love that I couldn't be proud of
And felt guilty about
A merry night and a lonely morning
I repeated such a life

** (repeat)

*** I wonder if I make it in time, if it's not late
I wonder if I can still start
I want you to see me and feel me
I want you not to give me up
Because I don't run away nor gloss over
Because I don't repeat the same thing
I'm by your side, I'm holding you
I accept you as you are

**** The only and the last one
There is such a love
A night of belief and a morning of fulfillment
An angel smiled

**** (repeat)
* (repeat)
*** (repeat)

jon_the_d 26th September 2010 09:05 PM

Thanks masa! I love this song!

should that be 'too late'?

thanks again ;)

hope everybody loves this song as much as I do, if not, unlucky!

panda♥ 26th September 2010 09:07 PM

"an exciting night" doesn't necessarily mean sex. :laugh but woohoo for Ayu! XD

ayumasing 26th September 2010 09:09 PM

Whoa...I didn't even think about that possiblity until you guys brought it up...but now that I think about it, I can't imagine Ayu being so open about it. Maybe that's why she was trying to be subtle about it in her lyrics?

Kazeyomi 26th September 2010 09:09 PM

D: wow Ayu talks about sex. Well, I guess :laugh
I'm expecting some drama lol like with Sparkle lyrics. Nice lyrics though :yes thanks a lot masa!

CreaHiroo 26th September 2010 09:13 PM

ayu has become an adult (^O^

Minttulatte 26th September 2010 09:20 PM

You people are dirty minded! :'D That doesn't mean she had sex with someone lol. I wouldn't mind if she wrote a song like that though. I love Sparkle and maybe I'm gonna love this song more too. :D

But anyhoo, thank you for the translation, masa. :)

Calico 26th September 2010 09:32 PM

Yeah, that's too ambiguous to exactly be about sex...I have the dirtiest mind I know and I didn't think of that. :laugh

Thanks masa!

Peruseusu 26th September 2010 10:20 PM

thx ^^

Miduhyo 26th September 2010 10:22 PM

It could be about sex, but it could also just be about having a fun night! Who knows... I'm not going to go any farther in that. XD

Thanks for the translation, I understood some but not all so thanks alot!! :D

yuki_unmei 26th September 2010 10:50 PM

lol the sex line..
i noticed that too, but i don't think that's what she means..? well maybe.. :laugh
i like it either way xDD

"*** I had such a love that I couldn't be proud of

I'm hoping this is less scandalous than it sounds!

Keiichi_JPU 27th September 2010 12:46 AM

Ayu's a normal person, she has sex. I don't see how that's scandalous or shocking, I like that she's open about it!

Well maybe it's just a translation misconception, and the Japanese lyrics might be a lot less.. insinuating :)

yabieru 27th September 2010 01:25 AM

Interesting lyrics. I like the idea that she's talking about sex :D I'll try to ask her the meaning of the lyrics by twitter. I'll do my best! xDDD

Thanks for the translation! ^^

ren0210989 27th September 2010 01:40 AM

love the lyrics, and haha yeah that line probably is about sex :P

tnx for the translation mana :D

ohsixthirty 27th September 2010 01:50 AM

I seriously don't think Ayu is talking about sex. :laugh

More likely about going to the bar and boozing it up!

Seriously, an exciting night could mean anything! I could say I had an exciting night surfing AHS and then say the next morning I feel guilty for not being more productive with my time.

Michan 27th September 2010 01:59 AM

I had such a love that I couldn't be proud of

When I read this part I instantly thought of booty call XD.

kumikomishitate 27th September 2010 02:56 AM

Yeah, I immediately thought of sex too. Not that I have any problem with that. She may be single but I guess she sometimes needs to get laid as well.

ストロボ・EdGE 27th September 2010 04:16 AM

I don't care if she sings about sex but it's really awkward in this song, assuming that's what she's really referring to.

yamadashun 27th September 2010 04:27 AM

that's why i love ayu's lyric! she writes many things ambiguously, which could be put into many ways.

i LOVE this song so much!

PoetGirl 27th September 2010 06:14 AM

what sex lol, I dont see any sex lines. Whatever she means I like the song and its lyrics.

freedreamer 27th September 2010 06:27 AM

Hhaha! I actually like the lyrics because there's a story in there!!!
its never too late to love!

love in music 27th September 2010 06:28 AM

i want it to be about sex, it makes me love the lyrics that much more. ayu says you should interpret her lyrics however you want so i'm just going to keep that as my interpretation and think of this song as the first one where she mentioned her sex life :P

ストロボ・EdGE 27th September 2010 06:42 AM

Ayu's a virgin, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

masa 27th September 2010 12:00 PM

"Hashagu" means "have fun", "chat and play cheerfully". So I think the original lyrics don't suggest sex. Maybe my choice of words was not appropriate. I change the part as below. But your advices of making it better are welcome.

A merry night and a lonely morning
I repeated such a life

Diana 27th September 2010 05:28 PM

OK.. first I have one thought and then a second.. I like the lyrics but I'm not quite sure what she's talking about :D Thanks masa~
But really... So much repeating?! o_o

lol almost every post is about sex xD

thats what i figured. i'm sure its about going out and having fun with her friends, eating, drinking, dancing, staying up all night talking and having fun...not about sex.

but then she wakes up in the morning all alone as her friends have all gone home.

When people react this way about subtle mentions of sex that may not even actually be meant t be taken that way... I remember how sexual America's pop culture really is. :laugh

ownsarai 27th September 2010 11:09 PM

I love how everyone immediately jumped to the sex conclusion. :roflmao
Of course Ayu isn't a virgin people...I'm sure she and Tomoya had their nights or days of fun while they were together. :P And maybe she has a secret hook up or something we don't know about, who knows. Maybe it's Midoring. ;)
It would be very forward of her if she were talking about her sex life though. That is one subject she has never touched on before. But I think it is just her talking about her nights of fun with her friends, drinking, talking, staying up all night, etc. But in the morning she wakes up alone.
Oh how I wish Ayu would find herself someone to love. :weep

jbrat2219 27th September 2010 11:24 PM

Sometimes I wonder when she has time to have sex with such an insane schedule... I mean one-night stands are the only way for her to get any LOL.

I agree.

Nobody thought "sex" when she sang GAME ("when all your warmth leaves my body, what will my body mean"), until that Day... ("I'll sell my body in whatever way I wish, but my heart belongs to no one"), and when she made the music video to Because of You, everyone seemed to be dying to make up excuses for the white substance so prevalent in the video. Why does everyone try to place one meaning on something that can mean a multitude of things?

Just because she says "merry night and lonely morning," doesn't imply she's having a casual relationship with someone. I know for one, I've had plenty merry nights with lonely mornings that had nothing to do with sex (i.e. out drinking, hanging out with new friends, etc).

This doesn't mean I don't think ayumi hasnt done it.

Of course she has. She's 30 something (32?) and smoking hot. :tipsy

pommy48 28th September 2010 01:35 AM

Masa, I was wondering if you could explain the difference between "koi" and "ai". I noticed that, in the first verse, she uses "koi", but, in the second verse, she replaces it with "ai", and I was wondering why. Thanks for the translation!

CHE.R.RY 29th September 2010 04:52 AM

Omg lol I never thought dirty when I read that xD! But I DID only read it after it was changed to "merry" so that is probably why lol. Hmph Idk though, I always felt that Ayu mentioned sex in her songs but in a very subtle manner...who knows though?

I Am... Aaron 29th September 2010 07:53 AM

Couldn't the whole "merry night, lonely morning" line simply mean somehting more along the lines of dating or going out but coming home alone/waking up alone the next day? It doesn't have to mean sex necessarily. :o

Either way, I like it. :D

This was for masa, but IŽll answer anyway:
http://japanese.about.com/library/weekly/aa021101b.htm
Quote:

"Koi" is a love for the opposite sex, or a longing feeling for a specific person. It can be described as "romantic love" or "passionate love." While "ai" has the same meaning as "koi," it also has a definition of a general feeling of love. "Koi" can be selfish, but "ai" is a real love. Here are some lines that explain them well:

Koi is always wanting. Ai is always giving.

Anywho, thanks for the translation. I love this song more and more.

HELVENEUE 30th September 2010 08:16 AM

These lyrics are not as strong as ayu's lyrics usually are.

I really hope that the every so slightly sensual message of this song is what she was trying to get across because otherwise....this song is just lame.

"Ai" has the broader meaning, while "koi" has the restricted meaning. As blue bird said, "ai" is "love" and "koi" is "romantic love".

masa 1st October 2010 05:48 PM

I corrected some parts and line arrangement, according to the original lyrics.

neiro nanka ja nai tte --> neiro nanka ja nai
Uso ja nai kana yume ja nai kana --> Uso ja nai kara yume ja nai kara

And I changed a line of my transration.

You were sometimes voiceless, weren't you? --> Your voice sometimes ceased, didn't it?

*hearT_Place* 1st October 2010 11:18 PM

Thank you, blue bird and masa! Your explanations brought an additional amount of depth to her lyrics here! :)

The song is fantastic. As well as "Virgin Road".

I LOVE this song. Number one, it is so different from her other stuff, musically. So even without understanding a significant amount of Japanese, it stole my attention immediately when I played it for the first time.
But, not only that, now after reading along with these lyrics (constantly switching between following the Japanese and reading the English translation), I've gotten such an even deeper connection to the song.

I absolutely love the way she sings this part:

If I recall correctly, she never really sings like this, in this quiet and deep/creepy-like tone, in many of her previous songs over the last ten years, if any at all, until now.

Not only that, but then she repeats it in a more audible tone.

I love the way she repeats all the really cool parts of the song (besides the awesome intro) in a louder, different tone throughout the song.

This song also is one of the few songs of hers where the instrumental/karaoke version of the song is awesome enough to be a song by itself! (Another, in my opinion, would be "WHATEVER" from long ago).

Anyway, my point is, this song is great. As well as "Virgin Road". :D I could do without "Sweet Season" or whatever though. :innocent

Thank you Masa, as always!!

I think maybe "ever free" and "monochrome" are the two most noticeable previous efforts where she attempted something a little similar to what you're describing? "ever free" does have its high notes, but she's also very quiet in verses, and like she's sing-talking at parts. "monochrome" has a similar, monotonous feel throughout. That might be intentional, given the nature of both songs. Still, I also noticed this shift you're describing for those particular parts of the song -- it's like what she's describing is meant to be more direct, blunt, or stronger? It's hard to describe. I just feel like those two parts of the song are more like she's talking to us instead of singing.

o_o Sense, am I making any?
