Spoiler:
Utada Hikaru is a Japanese American singer/songwriter who by the age of 15 had already risen to the top of Japan's music industry. Born on January 19, 1983, Utada was exposed the music industry at an early age by her parents who were both musicians. The recording studio was often like a second home to her because of the long hours she had to spend there due to her parents' work. Growing up, Utada lived in both Tokyo and New York. These aspects of her early life would later influence her musical compositions.

At age 12, Utada made her first professional recording as part of the musical project, U3. Soon after, she made a series of releases under the name Cubic U. In 1998, Utada moved to Tokyo to attend the American School in Japan, from which she later graduated. During her time in Tokyo, Utada was still writing and recording for Toshiba EMI. On December 9, 1998, Utada Hikaru released her debut Japanese single, Automatic/Time Will Tell. She became an instant hit. The single sold over 2 million copies and was followed by the million selling single, Movin' on Without You.

On March 10, 1999, Utada Hikaru released her debut album, First Love. First Love sold over 7 million copies in Japan alone and over 10 million copies worldwide making it the best selling album in Japanese music history. A re-cut single from the album, also titled First Love, was released and reached #2 on the Oricon charts. By age 16 Utada Hikaru was already a household name in Japan.

In 2001, 2 years after her massive debut success, Utada returned with her sophomore album, Distance. There was controversy concerning the album as it was to be released on the same day as Hamasaki Ayumi's first best album, A-Best. Hamasaki, then the top selling idol in Japan, was forced by her label Avex Trax to deliberately release her best album on the same day as Distance. Both artists denied that there was a rivalry. On March 28, 2001, Distance was released. In the album's first week of sales, it took the #1 spot. In the second week, Hamasaki's A-Best topped the charts. In the end, Distance became the best selling album of 2001 and the #4 best selling album in Japanese history.

In 2002, Utada released DEEP RIVER, another #1 selling album featuring the theme song of the popular video game Kingdom Hearts, Hikari. The album became the #8 best selling album in Japanese history. She also surprised the Japanese public by marrying her long time music video director, Kiriya Kazuaki, 15 years her senior. Following the success of the album, Utada took a break from the Japanese music scene, only releasing the single COLORS in 2003 and her first best album, Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL. 1 in 2004. The compilation became the best selling album of 2004.

In 2004, Utada once again shocked the public by announcing that she was to debut in the United States. On July 3, 2004, she released the single Easy Breezy. Fans were shocked to see the shy singer in the promotional video, poolside and in a bikini. On September 8, Utada released her debut English album, EXODUS (released under the name Utada and not Utada Hikaru). Though the album only sold 55,000 copies in the U.S, it sold over a million copies in Japan. Utada also noted that the development of EXODUS influenced the sound of her later releases.

In 2006, Utada Hikaru returned with her fourth Japanese album, ULTRA BLUE, which featured the Kingdom Hearts II theme song, Passion. Though the album reached #1 on the Oricon charts and became the #7 album of the year, it also became her first album to sell less than a million copies, selling about 900,000 copies. To promote the album, Utada embarked on a nationwide tour titled "UTADA UNITED 2006".

In 2007, Utada released the single Flavor of Life, an insert song for the popular dorama, Hana Yori Dango 2. The single became the most downloaded ringtone in Japanese music history with over 5.5 million copies sold. In addition, the single sold over 670,000 physical copies, becoming the #2 best selling single of the year. On March 19, 2008, Utada Hikaru released the album HEART STATION, her fifth consecutive album to reach #1 on the charts. The album sold over a million copies, becoming the #5 best selling album of 2008 as well as the most downloaded album of the year (with 15 million full downloads).

In 2009, Utada once again returned in the US music scene with the album, This Is The One. The album reached #69 on the US Billboard Top 200 Charts. This made Utada only the 7th Japanese artist to accomplish this and the first one in 23 years. The album was also a digital success, reaching #2 on the iTunes pop albums chart as well as #18 overall (the first Japanese artist to accomplish this). In Japan, the album reached #3 on the Oricon album charts and topped the foreign album charts at #1 for 5 consecutive weeks. By the end of 2009, Utada was named the most influential artist of the decade by Tokyo Times. In early 2010, Utada held her first US Tour, Utada In The Flesh, which included 2 dates in London.

In August 2010, Utada Hikaru announced that she was taking a break from music. She will release Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL. 2 on November 24, 2010 with 5 new songs.

Spoiler:

Utada publicly denounces release of English compilation album
On October 24, 2010, Utada made a statement through Twitter criticizing Universal Japan's decision to release a compilation of her English works and their audacity in placing the album for release on the same date as her Japanese compilation.

"The release of "Utada the best" is entirely against my will. I wish that my fans won't have to buy it. There's no new material in it."

Utada In The Flesh footage being released soon!
On Oct. 15, Utada Teruzane (Utada's father) announced that they are currently in talks with Apple to release the concert footage from Utada's 2010 US Tour.

"We have been discussing w/ Apple i-Tunes to utilize the US/London 2010 tour video, by the way, it is already mixed/edited. teruzane"

Since Hikki's releasing her single collection in November, the sales will be counted towards next year's numbers, right?

Kana's already got this year locked up for sure but I wonder about next year and the album that it will inevitably bring?

It'll just be creepy if she manages to outsell Hikki. :eyebrow

I've seen a discussion about this somewhere up at the Ayu forums, and it turns out Oricon changed this, and now even album released in November are counted towards 2010 sales. I'm not sure if this is true, but I've read this!

I'm rediscovering her lyrics. This woman is.. unbelievably talented. Realizing this, it makes me even more sad she won't be making music for a long time after SCv2. I'm sad now :(

A story that will end emotionally
Began that day when you said "I love you"
I can't wait patiently for the start of the second half

Instead of endlessly doubting
I want to hear that dubious "I love you"
Until the end, always always

I look back on the fleeing shadows along the road
The "I love you" you said that day
I can't help chasing after it, always always

What are your guys' predictions for what the songs will sound like? :D I think "Arashi no Megami" will be a Take 5 / kairo / Passion-esque song. "Show Me Love" makes me imagine something like First Love meets Deep River/Ultra Blue. I have a feeling it'll blend her old and new together like Exodus but more listener-friendly. I think "Goodbye Happiness" is almost certainly going to be a ballad. Maybe like Dareka no or more R&B like PoL... And I think "Can't Wait 'Til Christmas" will either be a jazzy, christmas song or something like Nichyo no Asa. :)

I saw this post at the U.Blog too and think it'll be really interesting if this guy's hunch is correct:
Quote:

I think the “Can’t Wait Till Christmas” song is the one that utada mentioned she was trying to write; a song that voiced her feelings on the matter of her hiatus, as it’s really near the end of her ‘artist’ year, until 2-5 years from now. But I’m not sure. I’m excited though.

Passion liked? Sure. Take 5/Kairo? I hope not. I hope the opening song is not something leading us to "death" :P. (oh my... her humming in Take 5 is in my mind now... a-yi-ya-yi-ya.... :cry)

bluegie 8th October 2010 06:03 AM

^Yes!! I didn't memorize the translation of Uso, but there aren't many hikki songs with the phrase "I love you" :P.

Hey I didn't notice that big starry picture with kuma flying in the morning... Did you make that Polyrhythm? It's kawaii :D

CoriKaru 8th October 2010 06:19 AM

When did Utada say anything about writing a song concerning her hiatus? I can't recall anything.

"Can’t Wait ‘Til Christmas" has the potential to be the next "Boku wa Kuma" in my opinion, but if we're lucky, it'll be more "Niji iro BASU" instead.

nanakopy87 8th October 2010 07:19 AM

XD

Mintkisses 8th October 2010 07:40 AM

I LOLed hard at his comment. I felt so bad for him! xD
I know how he feels because, even though I'm not sure if Ayu noticed, the tweet Ayu replied to (mine, in my signature) I had misspellings and misplaced words. I felt like a retard. :laugh

Polyrhythm 8th October 2010 08:39 AM

Keep the new banner for the first post or use the one from thread 39?

Keiichi_JPU 8th October 2010 08:46 AM

Hikki tweets:

I "visited" my grandparents today at the NY Buddhist Church. Held the urns that hold their bones' ashes. It was kinda like holding a baby. It was something I'd wanted to do for a long time. I'd like to be cremated too, and be held by my children and grandchildren after I die :)

edit: and her next tweet kinda made me smile, even though it's serious business:

They're also in Japan. Good thing about ashes :) RT @XmanNYC71: surprised your grandparents ashes were in NY. I thought they'd be in japan.

Keep it :D. I love seeing kuma chan flying in the sky :yes.

PS: ah well it's time for me to get a new computer. My screen was so dark that I didn't notice hikki at the bottom left corner of the banner until I highlighted the banner... :shakehead..

Andrenekoi 8th October 2010 02:36 PM

She seens to have a bitter sense of humour from her replies xD

Pieces_of_SEVEN 8th October 2010 11:08 PM

I don't think words can express how incredibly disappointed in this track I am.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 8th October 2010 11:23 PM

^I hope someone does.
Hopefully the other songs are better. sigh

Andrenekoi 8th October 2010 11:27 PM

Cuz... It's French! haha

I listened to this song while driving. First listen didn't do much for me. But the 2nd listen was so relaxing. It makes me enjoying my day more :D.

Andrenekoi 8th October 2010 11:48 PM

^Now it's official! 2010 is a good year for me jpop-wise xD

Polyrhythm 9th October 2010 12:15 AM

Grrrr....scared to download it cause I'm at home....I'll listen when I get home tonight.

NVM: It was on Youtube......

:thud.

its so different. Amazing as usual. Duh.

emi♡ 9th October 2010 12:19 AM

I like the new song, but not really as a song that's serious...just as a song that she wanted to do...more like a bonus song.

unless she decides to go in this direction...which, no offense but lol

I'm personally disappointed because I wanted something...not like a bonus song lol

but it's a cool song and I know it's very "her"...it's just not what I want from her. You know, she can release these types of songs alongside her actual music...

Oh well.

Picaflor 7/4 9th October 2010 12:23 AM

a bit unusual, but i fits hikki's style. she sings r&b and this seems to be right up her specialty. I definitely can see this as a song on her distance album.

KremlinChaos 9th October 2010 12:47 AM

It's really different but I like it. The middle of the song is amazing <3.

Picaflor 7/4 9th October 2010 01:04 AM

The middle part is the best!

Kanzaki 9th October 2010 01:20 AM

Hm. The semi-insane, jazzy instrumentals going on are kinda annoying and not really my taste. Her vocals and the song is great though. It's a 3/6 for me, not that impressed. But I guess she's doing what she wants to do know; this new jazz direction. And that's fine by me.

From the beginning I didn't assume this song was something we wanted. First it's a song truly dedicated to the pepsi commercial. Secondly she didn't compose the song, and she covered part of original (in French). But I'm pleasant that she can transform the song into her style while maintaining a taste of the original.

I dun think her other new songs will be similar to this one. So there will be something you wanted for sure :D.

emi♡ 9th October 2010 01:33 AM

^I don't know...it seems like something she would like to do...

and the fact that she's taking up one of the five slots with it...Ew.

Whatever hikki. Something is better than nothing right?

I hope you're right about the other songs.

Ayu_desu 9th October 2010 01:54 AM

I love how the instrumentals sound as if it were improvised, even when she's kinda doing towards the end. I guess that's why I love jazz.

Really refreshing stuff. I like.

hayasaki 9th October 2010 01:59 AM

Oh God!!! I never really expected myself from loving this song the first time i heard it!!! lol It's insanely great!!!! XD

amorphose 9th October 2010 02:15 AM

I hate the song. Her vocals are good, but the music is terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

nanakopy87 9th October 2010 02:17 AM

wow.the middle of the song is cool~! ♥♥♥
but i don't know how to appreciate french song XD

thats kind of how i'm feeling too. her vocals are great, but the music leaves a lot to be desired and in the end the song becomes both annoying and boring at the same time.

the worst part though is the pan flute! gtfo with that!

Pieces_of_SEVEN 9th October 2010 02:38 AM

No, the worst part is the song! lol

AyuGAME 9th October 2010 03:09 AM

Ugghhh...i don't like it...
i do enjoy jazz music, but this one is too heavy...
the background beat is so...uggghh...haunting...

the resemblance is uncanny. haha I haven't kept up with dbsk since their (air quotes/extreme sarcasm) "hiatus". So I don't know where that picture is from. jaejoong just happens to look like hayasaki in that picture.

Btw, now that I think of it, someone needs to tweet the hell out of hikki until she gives us the full version of "COLORS (Godson Mix)". :D

freedreamer 9th October 2010 05:25 AM

Im not loving it..not a jazz fan.

JackieRos 9th October 2010 05:28 AM

oooooh I love it!!!

Lovvvvvve the Jazz

AND ALL THAT JAAAAAAZZ

Purple Neko 9th October 2010 05:55 AM

xD OMG I REALLY REALLY LOVE IT~ The middle is EPIC!!! I love the jazz it totally fits great with her voice. HOLY CRAP SO excited!

ll moments ll 9th October 2010 06:35 AM

hmm. i find the song...extremely long. and somewhat boring. i like the middle part the most, but the song is definitely not a favorite of mine.

haha, you make me crack up!!!

its a shame too, because i actually really enjoy Edith Piaf. although, i don't know the original song by her, so maybe it was crappy to begin with. :shrug

tenshi no hane 9th October 2010 08:48 AM

I'm still not feeling the French, but it's a fun song :heart

CoriKaru 9th October 2010 09:14 AM

Even though I could tell from the preview, Utada took the first bit of musical arrangement from her favorite track off of "This Is The One", "Me Muero," that only lasted a nano-second before the main beat came in and ran with it throughout this entire song.

Influences people.

Mirrorcle Monster 9th October 2010 09:21 AM

I don't like it, hope the rest is good

HELVENEUE 9th October 2010 09:49 AM

it's an interesting track, but yeah, It's not an instant favorite. I'm still mega excited cuz I know this ***** is gonna have some hawt tracks.

Nackar_91 9th October 2010 11:24 AM

The song is slightly long, but I love it for what it is: A nice, relaxing jazzy R&B song. I'll just accept the French as the English most other J-Pop artists throw into the mix: unintelligible gibberish XD

Maemi 9th October 2010 11:25 AM

I don't like that french song, and I don't like jazz - too long too boring. Hope the rest is better! =D

omably 9th October 2010 12:43 PM

ahh! i love it when she does the little 'hey!' at around 3:10!

ruixiong89 9th October 2010 03:27 PM

I'm just glad she's releasing new material! Oh my goodness, it's been how long since she last released something! I like the jazz arrangement is cool, and she sounds good in the song!

Keiichi_JPU 9th October 2010 04:59 PM

OMG the bridge is amazing! hahaha. loving it!

But yeah, definitely no. I'll just consider this a bonus track, I really wanna hear the other 4 tracks!

Picaflor 7/4 9th October 2010 07:20 PM

I think she should have cut out the french. Just leave that part for the commercial, and keep the song down to 4 minutes with just the japanese part. Otherwise, it's too long. I'm glad we have this song, I doubt she'll be doing any other songs like this in a long time, and it just broadens her discography a bit with this type of music. Cool to look back and think "wow, she has a childrens song, a rock song, a jazz song she sung in french, etc." Just another different song to add to her discography.

Yumsushi 10th October 2010 04:16 AM

It was like a battle between her voice and the chaotic music...and don't get me started on her French. Very disappointing; she could do Jazz so much better than this. I hope the other new tracks are better.

JackieRos 10th October 2010 05:25 AM

whats so great anout the middle part -.-
I'm waiting to be wowed and then the song ends

CHE.R.RY 10th October 2010 06:24 AM

Personally I liked the French in the song :thud

It was fun and matched the style of the song! It was something new and different -in fact, I thought this was a fresh sound from Hikki and I found it appealing. Sure, it's not the best song she has ever released, but I thought it was pretty cool :yes.

Well, this is a very particular style of Jazz, and it's always kind of like, chaotic with these types of vocals.

But yeah, it's not for everyone, and yes, omg her French is the most awful thing. She should have just done it all in Japanese.

I thought she was singing in spanish at one point lol

I think if she did like a lot of Jazz in her own way, it wouldn't sound like this...but you never know lol

Andrenekoi 10th October 2010 08:21 AM

There is some bossa nova on it too, isn't it?

Rogue 10th October 2010 10:46 AM

I agree with the disliking here, it's really not my genre, however I don't think she did such a bad job.
But the song definitely doesn't stand out for me, I really don't like it <.<
Her voice seems to fit almost every genre though.. *still dissappointed*

U-GO-BOY 10th October 2010 11:26 AM

I want more rock songs like Uso Mitai.. :(

koumori 10th October 2010 02:08 PM

Uhhh..I was...surprised.
I hope the four other songs are different. And better.

roanmy 10th October 2010 02:45 PM

Keiichi_JPU 10th October 2010 09:33 PM

Empress Utada reigns again :yes

Polyrhythm 10th October 2010 09:38 PM

Looks like that is the single cover after all

fantaisie.sign 10th October 2010 10:04 PM

Wow, so many people here don't like jazz... =/ I think it's one the most creative songs she has ever made. Making a jazz song is not easy because of all the improvisation involved, hence why it sounds "messy."

...if this was a Yoko Kanno/Seatbelts song on a Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, I bet people would be totally in love with it.

emi♡ 10th October 2010 11:04 PM

^LOL Maybe. I foresee different (better) vocals for a song on that soundtrack ;P

CoriKaru 11th October 2010 12:17 AM

#1 on Japanese iTunes. Was only a matter of time. Seriously, she can create and sell anything she wants now. Love it.

She's Utada, hear her roar......in Japanese, English and French. :cool
