Last.fm users: are you a "true listener"?

Meaning, do you listen to EVERYTHING you scrobble, or do you sometimes leave music on/scrobbling when you're not there?

I'd say I'm mostly a true listener. Once in a while I leave for 2-3 minutes with the music on, but it's only to get laundry or whatever, and I don't count that!

One thing I do, however, is "compensate" for songs that don't scrobble properly. If something doesn't scrobble because of a server hiccup, or an update glitch, I'll put the song in a "temporary" playlist and deliberately let it play when I'm not there to make up for the time it wasn't collected by the servers. I'll do the same if something's mistakenly tagged improperly--delete it from my library, then correct the tag and play it later when I'm absent to make up for it.

Yes, I realize how obsessive-compulsive that sounds. :P

So I guess my library is VERY accurate playcount- and tag-wise, but not always accurate time-wise.

..................You?

pommy48 12th December 2010 11:56 PM

I would say yes, but sometimes I don't

I usually listen to music before I go to sleep, but sometimes I fall asleep and the music keeps on playing~

I do leave my desk and go do something else, but I turn the volume up, so I can listen to it wherever I go~

But otherwise, most of plays should be accurate

Amrai-chan 12th December 2010 11:59 PM

Yes. If I leave the room I either turn the music up or pause it.

That still counts! Your brain is still "listening" :P

JackieRos 13th December 2010 12:40 AM

Nope I sometimes leave my ipod on shuffle and scrobble them
idk I don't take last fm seriously

fuawas 13th December 2010 12:48 AM

I guess I'm a true listener ^^ I listen to everything I scrobble and sometimes I listen to more music than I scrobble since I use my phone when my iPod is out of battery haha

Calico 13th December 2010 01:04 AM

Second option, lol. Just the other night I realized an album I jsut dled was tagged wrong halfway through, so I finished it and then let it play on mute after I corrected the tag. I don't however, for example, play songs on my computer that I listened to on CD in the car or something.

lanfix 13th December 2010 01:13 AM

Well, I guess I'm not XD
I usually turn my Winamp on in office and when out for lunch, or suddenly I have talking with somebody, I always forget to stop the music. Also I usually play the music when I'm sleeping.
Few months ago I deleted many songs in my lastfm because the tag wasn't correct too.

emi♡ 13th December 2010 01:14 AM

I guess I'm not lol

I've left my itunes going and scrobbling while I'm away at school...not really to get more scrobbles...just cause im always in a rush and i just leave it going.

I don't really mind though...I dont really take them seriously.

Besides, there was a whole year I couldnt scrobble anything, so...I should have way more scrobbles than I have...but whatever lol

Oh good! I'm not the only one who does that stuff! Haha.

R_Hikki 13th December 2010 02:58 AM

I've tried to take control of certain scrobbles but then I realized how pointless that makes the charts look. I enjoy looking at my weekly and overall charts because they tell me what my mood at the time has inspired me to listen to. I play what I want to hear and that always varies on what mood I'm in.

Another way instead of letting them play on mute is to use Universal Scrobbler. It's a bit quicker usually. You just choose Musicbrainz, type in the artist and go from there.

This :yes.
Sometimes I'm too true listener though :|.
I hate to scrobble something wrong so if it happens I delete the scrobble from my charts and I relisten to it with its proper tags.
I know, I have too much free time :laugh.

Ooooh, thanks for that!

xLitax 13th December 2010 04:58 AM

Yep, I think so. If I'm not listening to something, I pause it or stop it.

dreamland2.0 13th December 2010 05:18 AM

I always have true scrobbles but I HATE when I listen to something and it doesn't scrobble so I have to listen to it again LOL :laugh

No problem. :) It's very useful.

y_nathz 13th December 2010 07:30 AM

well not really, like if I'm out for lunch I leave my tracks playing coz it's not a srs business to me XD

Coelacanth 13th December 2010 07:42 AM

For the most part, but sometimes I do leave music on. If I leave it on it accidentally, I'll end up deleting a lot of the scrobbles though, especially if they're crappy songs.

miroro 13th December 2010 09:07 AM

i think i am:laugh even if sometmes i don't remember i have itunes on mute and not paused when i watching tv :roflmao but mostly, my scrobblings are true

Earth_maiden 13th December 2010 01:12 PM

True listener, if I'm not sitting at my comp or somewhere in my room, I don't usually play music at all. Unless I go to get a drink or go to the bathroom.

PoetGirl 13th December 2010 04:05 PM

true listener here not 'cause of the last fm, its 'cause when I listen Im really focused, I like to enjoy the music 100% so I cant do anything when I listen to music. Maybe it sounds crazy but I dont listen to music cuz its fun. I listen to music 'cause I find it almost like spiritual experience. So, even in my car I cant stand the radio. Listen fully or not listen at all!

Twinkle ! 13th December 2010 05:50 PM

5% not , so yes I'm true listener :P

Picaflor 7/4 13th December 2010 05:59 PM

i listen to all music i scrobble. wmp actually a lot de-adds the plug in for scrobbling so after listening to a song on repeat for 3 hours, none of it scrobbles. So I have to manually go in an recheck the plug in.

SPEAKERnight. 14th December 2010 01:38 AM

I used to be a true listener but I've been severely slacking. I don't even care anymore. But yea for the most part I am a true listener.

SURREAL__RAINBOW 14th December 2010 03:15 AM

I don't understand what's so good about being a "true listener", is not like you are a better person or something lol

Sometimes I like to play music and sometimes I don't, other times I like leaving my music on for days, especially when I go obsessed about an artist or a new album, and there are times when I just forget to turn it off.

So I guess all this puts me into the "fake listeners" list? meh :laugh

I laugh at people who take being a "true listener" seriously though, and think they're better listeners or something, even that nobody knows what that means

So I vote "nah" XD

Eh, I don't have that "true listeners are better!" mentality...I mean, it's just a website. I just treat my own scrobbling as SRS BUSINESS because I'm like that with my music. But I definitely don't have a problem if others don't. I was just curious to see what others do. :yes

SURREAL__RAINBOW 14th December 2010 06:03 AM

Yeah, sorry I was not specifically talking about you, but I've seen other people who believe they are better people because they are "true listeners" lol and that bothers me :) But I wasn't referring to you or anyone personally in here :D

StarSUCKER 14th December 2010 06:33 AM

^Np, np.

butterfly_ayu 14th December 2010 06:34 AM

i started mine not so long ago XD but yeah~ I think i listen to everything i scrobble. I hate it when they don't include interludes into my scrobbles though.

RyRyMini 14th December 2010 06:44 AM

Yep, and I'm borderline OCD about it. If my charts weren't real or accurate, I think I'd lose a lot of interest in the site.

Yum!Fruit_Salad! 14th December 2010 07:23 PM

Most definitely am. If the tags are wrong, I delete the song from my library and play the correct tagged song to the same number.

Personally, I think all of us are "true listeners"

cause none of us are actually leaving the music on all the time just for scrobbles...

which I think is why they started the whole "true listener" thing...a group against the people that just want higher numbers.

visionfactory 14th December 2010 08:17 PM

Yes, I reseted my last.fm account the last time I let my music playing alone

ownsarai 14th December 2010 08:36 PM

I guess I'm not really, because I leave my music on constantly...most of the time I am listening...but when I'm sleeping or go out, it's usually on as well. So maybe 75% of the time I'm listening, the other 25% I'm sleeping or out.

koumori 14th December 2010 10:08 PM

I made a LastFM a while ago but never really got the hang of it. But lately I've been craving new music so I made a new account :laugh

I've been a 'true listener' so far but that said, I don't get what scrobbles are and why people want more of them...lol

I dunno. Personally, I just like to look at statistics about my listening habits. Not sure why. As for wanting more, I think that's an arbitrary, but common thing. Like wanting a higher post count at AHS and the like.

emi♡ 15th December 2010 07:12 AM

@Jess: "scrobble" is just the word they came up with, for when you listen to a song, and last fm records it.

So basically, "scrobbles" is just, how many plays you have of whatever.

There are people who want to be like "oh look, I have this many scrobbles/plays of so-and-so, look how awesome I am"

Yeah. People are crazy lol But then, a lot of people will praise someone with a crazy amount of scrobbles. There's someone who has over 100,000 Ayumi Hamasaki plays, and his page is just filled with "omg amazing" lol

koumori 15th December 2010 07:15 AM

Sorry but that's just sad to me lol, it's like spamming to get a load of posts.

But meh, some people will always find a way to be the 'best', even on a music-listening site :tired

Thanks for explaining guys!

Don't you remember Pokemon?! "I wanna be the very best like no one ever was!" :laugh

koumori 15th December 2010 07:33 AM

^ True, but I'd rather have 10,000 pokemon than a record of 10,000 scrobbles :laugh

Ash knew his priorities. :P

I know this is from a while ago but I want to say something. "true listeners" are people who listen to all the music they scrobble. They don't drag a bunch of songs into a playlist, hit play, and let them all scrobble while you go off and enjoy tv, or go to the mall with your friends or something to make it look like you have 100s of scrobbles when really you don't. it's like spamming on here. when someone spams, they just post to get their post count up and make it look like they have a lot of posts and are really active, and really care.

"untrue listeners" aren't people that like to listen to music but forget to turn off their music players because they're doing something else. They're people that play songs and intentionally don't listen to them just to get their scrobbled song count up and make it look like they're an avid music listener, but really, they're not.

So from what you said in your post, I'd say you're a true listener. :yes

~StarCatcher~ 15th December 2010 08:11 AM

Oh hell yes I am a true listener XD

I really scrobble everything I listen to.
Also the things I listen to via iPod and iPhone:D

That's why I often listen to my original CDs only one time @_@

tokyoxjapanxfan 15th December 2010 08:20 AM

Yes I am haha.

If I'm listening to a song, and I want to change it, I wait until it's scrobbled before I go to the next song :-\ Even if I hate the song ... haha

It's weird how easy it is to become obsessed with such a thing :P

LOL I guess I'm just traumatized 'cause I've been called a fake when I have like over 40k plays for ayu. And is not like I fake these plays, I just really, really, reaaaally play ayu a lot :shrug

Lately though I've been obsessed with Madonna, she is almost my second most listened artist, and at the same time ditched ayu a little waiting for the new album :laugh

And once, my Ipod went crazy and scrobbled 2k plays for Madonna :shrug which I was like wtf, but it wasn't like I was going to delete them since that would delete my past plays too :/

I just think that perhaps I am a fake, for people who just don't believe I can listen ayu that much, or Madonna that much, or anyone that much, when I actually can XD Specially now when I'm on holidays and stuff :thud

Both extremes are bad I think, for example people who have like 100k plays for Lady GaGa, that's just like omg XD really? and others who have like 2 plays, which isn't a bad thing until they start judging others for having more plays than them calling them fakes :shrug

What's the point of taking scrobbles so seriously though... maybe just a little bit is alright? Not sure lol In my case, they represent how I've evolved with my music taste, and such, so I really don't want to delete or reset my account.

EDIT: I :shrug a lot

Srsly. Pokemon > anything else one could conceivably collect. Mmmm, except maybe Ayu CDs. :P

I kinda like seeing tons and tons of scrobbles on my Last.fm page though. Not sure why...but I've also had the account since 2005, and haven't reset it once. So I can see the evolution of my taste, and which artists "prevailed" (been listening to Ayu since way before I got the account). It's pretty pointless, but I have a fascination with statistics I guess. Since I look to Last.fm for that kind of information, though, I don't want to fake any of my scrobbles (number-wise; the exception is what I said before about compensating).

CaseNumber:825 20th December 2010 08:16 PM

I'm not really a true listener, in that I listen to music while I sleep (I have Guinea Pigs in my room and they are sometimes quite loud, so the music helps me ignore them while I go to sleep.... weird logic, I know, putting one noise over a different noise apparently cancels it out :rolleyes)

Though apart from that I am constantly listening to music. So I'm MOSTLY a true listener..... kind of XD

aqua_crystal 27th December 2010 06:44 PM

Oh yeah. I have a last.fm account. Hmm....

Kanzaki 27th December 2010 11:37 PM

I'm kind of a music snob (which I'm just slightly ashamed about) so, yes. I never just play music while cleaning or having friends over. I always shut down the Last.fm scrobbler when I do that. I'm very picky with what I want to be shown on my Last.fm page. Which is why when my bf had had a party and had played Blümchen, Aqua and Haddaway, and it got scrobbled on my account, I was like "wtf".

Minttulatte 11th January 2011 01:51 PM

I am a true listener. I listen to everything when I listen to music. Of course there is times when I just can't feel the song I'm listening to but when I realize that, last.fm has already scrobbled the song on my account lol. :D

wildconnetta 15th January 2011 10:01 PM

Since there isn't a sometimes, I put a Nah.

Usually I am, but some exceptions (i.e. Spiritualized's great debut album 'Lazer Guided Memories', Prince etc.) are included on my last.fm page,

ALfromHELLSING 16th January 2011 06:50 PM

I'm a true listener I guess, I don't srobble everything I listen to... and sometimes I scrobble music without listening because I'm busy somewhere else in the house but thats only a few minutes :yes I don't see the use of scrobbling when I don't listen to the music anyway...

MemorialAddress 9th February 2011 06:20 AM

I definitely am.
I don't like it when people leave music on while they aren't around, it's cheating!! :laugh

Chibi-Chan 17th February 2011 10:43 PM

Yes, but I "compensate" for lost tracks (see below for what I mean by this)

YUKARI 26th May 2011 03:15 PM

Yes, I am a true listener. that's why I don't have many scrobbles.

TITANIC 29th May 2011 04:21 PM

I am not. I always play my music eventhough sometime I am talking on phone or showering

relmy 30th May 2011 01:52 PM

I guess I am a true listener. I play all my music from my laptop, so it all scrobbles. If a song scrobbles with the wrong title, I change my tags, but I don't rescrobble it to make up for it. Why would I bother compensating?

Also, I don't like how it scrobbles after 50% of a song. Sometimes if I'm doing something I don't notice the song that's playing and I'll change in the middle because it's a song I'm not in the mood for or something. So I didn't really listen to it.

kendelle 6th June 2011 04:01 PM

It's not a serious thing for me, so I often leave the computer playing while I go out or overnight! :P

RayJason 16th July 2011 08:29 PM

No I'm not. I always have my music on, even sometimes when I fall asleep. When I wake up I'm actually not surprised to see that one song has been scrobbled over 20 times lol.

sesshy 16th July 2011 09:56 PM

I guess...? I listen to a lot of music on my laptop and ipod touch, but I don't scrobble my ipod touch because I refuse to download that Last.fm program after it ate up my memory. :/ But I do use to it see how many plays and who I listen to the most.

MiiSan 30th July 2011 11:33 PM

Yeah, pretty much I guess~
I sometimes leave my room, letting my iTunes play (forgetting to press on the pause button ^^; )

Other than that, my stats are pretty clean.
