I am speculating that the two know each other for longer already. Hasn't exactly been the first time that ayu has been in the US right? And as she herself said, she can walk around there more freely cause no one knows her. I think they might have started dating earlier, and now it's getting serious. I always thought she'd go for a Japanese guy. Maybe that's the part that's so shocking (not in a bad way)? I just suppose I always thought, Ayu was really serious about things like marriage, I never even considered her to marry, because in Japan that always seems to mean ending your career. (For females, anyway) It just seems weird to me that after a relationship of 7 years, she's now marrying after such a short time. Although, being around the same age as Ayu I also kind of understand where she's coming from (the biological clock, you know - tic, toc)
