Rank Ayu's studio albums!
I've been curious lately about why AHS likes or dislikes certain albums. For example... I know GUILTY had some pretty bad reception upon it's release (as well as NEXT LEVEL and Rock'n'Roll Circus), but it seems to have grown on people now and is generally well-received!!
It's exactly what it sounds like! Rank Ayu's albums (including Memorial Address and not including Nothing from Nothing). 1 is her strongest album, 13 is the weakest. Just be sure to say a little about why one album is so awful, or one is so good. |
1. (miss) understood
2. I am... 3. RAINBOW 4. GUILTY 5. Memorial Address 6. My Story 7. Duty 8. Secret 9. LOVEppears 10. Love Songs 11. Rock'n'Roll Circus 12. NEXT LEVEL 13. A Song for XX My long review: Spoiler:
|
1. Love Songs ( I'm still on a super Love songs high and i love the album as a whole there generally isnt a single song that i skip when listening to the whole album, a true masterpiece, and i truly LOVE strings so this album is made for me!)
2.Memorial Address (The emotion in this album is just so raw I love it, Memorial Address and Because of You are two of my favorite songs ever, and the upbeat songs are great 3. (miss)understood ( Love this album for its versatility and the different sound from ayu, it took some time to get used to B & D, but once i saw it live my mind changed, the same thing happened with Rainy Day, at first i wasnt impressed by it but now its gorgeous to my ears) Love heaven though one of my favorite ballads along with Pride 4. Guilty (This album's rock sound is breathtaking, while i agree there were too many interludes, and the switch from rock to upbeat was weird, the rock part of this album is done amazing, admittedly i wont really listen to untitled for her i always find it forgettable) 5. Rock n Roll Circus ( This album has some of my favorite songs on it, BALLAD is up there on my top listened to ayu songs. It has so much variety it reminded me a bit of (m)u. Ayu tried new things with SLT and it all came together very well, it really is up there with my favorite albums its just hard to rank them) 6. Next Level ( Love specific tracks off of this album but as a whole i dont think it came together as amazingly as it could have, nonetheless the songs are really strong like sparkle, GREEN, and curtain call to name some) 7. My Story (This album once again has really amazing individual songs that i love but for some reason i usually wont listen to the album as a whole, my favorite tracks are Moments, Carlos, Inspire, Hope or Pain, walking proud, my name's WOMAN 8. Secret (this album is great as well, i find it very easy to listen through it completely as an album, yet for some reason i wont pick out specific tracks to listen to, some of the songs here are outstanding like JEWEL, but i can never remember how it was goes) 9. I am... (Great Great album truly revolutionary, all the songs are really strong its up there with my favorites it's just that all of ayu's albums are great its hard to say that one is better than the other, while i know I am... is super amazing as personal favorites its not the highest) 10. Rainbow ( Love rainbow as well, im saying that for every ayu album but its truly true, songs like Hanabi, We Wish, Heart Place and Voyage are great the ballads just melt my heart Hanabi makes my heart drop every time i listen to it but the up beat tracks are not my favorites but their still really good) 11. Loveppears ( so many songs on this album that i can never remember, but there are so many iconic ayu songs that are truly amazing like fly high, To be, boys and girls) 12. Duty ( This album is beautiful, it reminds me of Love songs because of its style, i love Surreal, the trilogy and teddy bear, but scar never really grew on me or girlish, nonetheless i understand why its such a popular album) 13. A Song for XX (I can rarely listen to this album whole, it always feels too long even though its not, and the songs kinda sound all the same even though their not. A Song for XX and Powder Snow are truly amazing, I really like Poker face and Depend on you but the rest is not my favorite) That's my ranking, truly it all depends on my current ayu mood but thats kinda where i stand now, but i must repeat again XP i honestly love almost all of ayu's albums the same! |
I love all albums equally. Love songs and RAINBOW are lower tier for me though.

Usually, when it comes to rating an album, my opinion changes over time... and now that my interests have slightly shifted towards a different type of music, and are likely to remain there, I should be able to rate her albums objectively, and pinpoint what I like even if I don't listen to her music so much anymore. In my opinion what makes a good album is when the songs can stand on their own without the support of said album. So here it goes.
1. GUILTY, Duty, (miss)understood 2. Love Songs 3. Rock'n'Roll Circus, Loveppears, I am..., MY STORY, RAINBOW. 4. Secret, Memorial address, NEXT LEVEL 5. A Song for ×× |
01. Rock'n'Roll Circus
02. GUILTY 03. (miss)understood 04. NEXT LEVEL and Love Songs 06. MY STORY and Secret 08. Duty 09. A Song for ×× 10. Memorial address 11. I am... and LOVEppears 13. RAINBOW |
1. I Am...
2. (Miss)understood 3. Love Song 4. LOVEppears 5. Memorial Address 6. Secret 7. MY STORY 8. GUILTY 9. NEXT LEVEL 10. Duty 11. RAINBOW 12. Rock 'n' Roll Circus 13. A Song For XX |
1. I am... - a masterpiece, really. Every song on this album is amazing, suitable interludes too. The lyrics too, so so good. It's also got the most fitting album title in my opinion. It's just her masterpiece album. It's got great flow and I love every song.
2. Duty - Ayu rock at it's best, and most emotional, level. This album does everything well, rock songs, rock influenced ballads, upbeat tunes that don't sound out of place, great ballads, and a typical Ayu "high emotion song" (teddy bear). Not too fond of girlish, but compared to her other "happy album enders" (independent, Humming) it's tolerable 3. Secret - Great ballads (JEWEL, momentum, Secret), kiss 'o kill is one of her best songs. I love the upbeat stuff too. I like every song on this album actually... I used to love until that Day & 1 LOVE 'til she overkilled that mediocre live performance of them 4. LOVEppears - the lyrics on this album ♥ I loath Kanariya, and I'm not that fond of TO BE and End roll, but everything else on this album is amazing 5. (miss)understood - lots of variety on this one, still some really weak songs here though (rainy day, Beautiful day), but the really great ones make them easy to ignore (B&D, Ladies Night, Will, HEAVEN, fairyland) 6. Love Songs - some of the albums below have better standalone songs, but this album worked so well as a concept, but also, it may be because I'd not really liked the previous few albums as much. Also, crossroad. I've played that song so so much it's now my most played Ayu song. I LOVE it. 7. memorial address - I hate Greatful days. ANGEL'S SONG annoys me too, the rest of the songs are great though, but Greatful Days is easily her worst song, hence the albums lower ranking for the quality of the other songs 8. RAINBOW - great standalone songs (Voyage, Free & Easy) but... I just find I rarely listen to this album. 9. MY STORY - as an album it's bland, but standalone 90% of the songs are great 10. NEXT LEVEL - I like this album more than the ranking shows, I couldn't decide which way round to put this and MS. I love GREEN, rollin' and identity. I hate Days. I hate it so much. 11. Rock'n'Roll Circus - got bored once the theatricals stopped being dramatic. Last Links is amazing though, and I'll probably get into Sunrise in the summer. 12. A Song for xx - ranked so low because of vocals, more stand out songs that RnRC (ASFXX, Powder Snow, For my Dear, Depend on you) 13. GUILTY - As you can tell, I'm not too fond of newer Ayu rock, and this song is just that. I like talkin' 2 myself and glitter, and I won't deny that Untitled is powerful, it just falls so short compared to all her other albums. I never think, "I want to listen to GUILTY" it's always..."why is there nothing I want to listen to on GUILTY?!". They're not bad songs, and I do listen to them from time to time, I'd just rather listen to something else. |
love:
rainbow, memorial address, my story, i am..., love songs like: secret, (miss)understood, rock n roll circus, loveppears dislike: everything else |
This was harder than I thought.

2. Memorial Address - once again, BRILLIANT VARIETY 3. GUILTY - I love the darker and more serious tone of this album very much 4. Secret 5. MY STORY - my first Ayu album! 6. Love songs 7. I am... 8. Rock'n'Roll Circus 9. Duty 10. NEXT LEVEL 11. LOVEppears 12. Rainbow 13. A Song For XX - i just dont listen to it that much..but its still a good album :) |
1. Love Songs - perfect flow, amazing songs, just 1 song I skip.
2. (miss)understood - amazing collection of songs, I just skip 2 songs on here. 3. I am... - lots of epic songs, but I skip 3 songs on here. 4. Rock 'n' Roll Circus - I love many of the songs on here, but there are 4 I skip. 5. RAINBOW - has some really awesome songs, but a few are some of her blandest I think (IE WE WISH, Close to you) 6. Secret - there are some very strong tracks, but I skip 4 very weak tracks. 7. Memorial Address - I love half the songs on here, but the other half are pretty weak. 8. NEXT LEVEL - I skip about half the songs on this one too. 9. GUILTY - some strong tracks, some weak ones. too many rock tracks. 10. MY STORY - I only listen to 4 tracks on this album. they're amazing, but the rest is trash. 11. Duty - same with MY STORY. 12. LOVEppears - her voice is too high pitched. I can only listen to a couple songs from here now and then. 13. A Song for XX - same with LOVEppears |
1. I am...
This has to be the best album for me. All the songs are just amazing and it was her glory days. Although not her highest selling album, most of the fan favorites come from this album! A true masterpiece.! 2. Love Songs I feel like this is almost as good as I am... It reminds me a lot of her older work and its just a wonderful album. The singles are amazing, the track listing is amazing, and I feel like every single song of the track fits well to the album. 3. Next Level When i first heard this album, i hated it. Then over time, i fell in love with it. The interludes are amazing, most of the songs are good as well. I think I would of rated it higher if I like more of the songs. 4. (miss) understood Another wonderful album. Now my reasoning is how many songs I like per album. It gets harder and harder to judge the "goodness" of each album. lol 5. Duty Sadly the only reason why this album is 5 is because of SEASONS, although and good song, it just gets to me sometimes. And I feel that, although her best selling album, lacks in "good" ayumi songs. When I think of ayumi, I think of I am, Rainbow, My story. This albums seems the darkest of them all and its a real turn off for me. Some of all my all time favorites on this album are surreal/audience/duty 6. Memorial Address I wish this album could of been a full album. I think im bitter about it being a mini album and thats why i voted it so low. lol. I felt like this era of music was amazing and should of been more. Memorial Address is just amazing and as well as Because of You and Forgiveness. Its Ayumi through and through. 7. RAINBOW Another album that is low just because of the track listing. I love most of the songs on here, but the ones that i dont like make this album less enjoyable. Also, the title track, RAINBOW isnt even on here... another reason why i might be bitter towards it, lol. 8. My Story Same as rainbow, nothing wrong with it. Although i do think Im starting to liek it more and more, but its still low on the list. 9. Rock'n'Roll Circus This I have a love hate relationship with it. It just doesn't seem like an Ayumi album. Its almost dark but not, then its kinda blah. I just dont care for it very much. 10. Secret Its not like I dislike it, but... theres only 3 or 4 tracks that I can say I love. There others are okay. 11. LOVEppears This album I feel is what starts to define who ayumi is. And with great tracks like fly high and Boys & Girls this album is a classic. But most of the songs I don't care for and some sound to similar to me. 12. GUILTY It was this album that turned me off ayumi for a few years. is till bought the albums, but not the singles anymore. I was very upset and I dont know why. Its not really terrible, but I just dont care for most of the tracks on this album. 13. A Song for XX Her first album. I dont care for anything on here. Its not that its bad, I feel like she was trying to find her music place and this album shows it. Her voice to seems to be changing all the time. |

2. NEXT LEVEL (cause its very original and fresh in Ayu's discography) 3. Love Songs (songs are pure masterpieces, sound is 'classic' imo) 4. GUILTY (cause its so EMOTIONAL, dark and sincere and raw ayu vocals, something 'different' from ayu) 5. (miss)understood (songs you never can be tired off, album where you can hear very much of everything ayu can do) 6. Rock N Roll Circus (same as missunderstood, ayu shows again how she can pull everything off) 7. I am... (freedom, I love it cause of 'free' theme, but atmoshere on this album is quite monotone, especially after M, songs are beautiful standing alone but you easily get tired if you listen to album as a whole) 8. MY STORY (same problem as I am..., I love songs, but listening to the whole album is not easy thing to do, songs will sound alike to eachother) 9. Lovepearss (amazing album, but out of date, I love listening to it but songs are not fresh) 10. Memorial Address (I love the songs, but it doesnt work as whole) 11. Loves: Duty Secret GUILTY (miss)understood MY STORY Likes: NEXT LEVEL Rainbow Love Songs I am... Memorial Address Don't care/hardly listen: LOVEppears A Song for XX |
1. (miss)understood/Duty (same position, can't decide)
2. Love songs 3. I am... / Rainbow (too hard to decide) 4. Secret / Rock'n'Roll Circus 5. Memmorial address 6. My Story 7. LOVEppears 8. A song for xx / Guilty 9. NEXT LEVEL I don't dislike the last ones, just rarely listen to Asfxx / Guilty / NEXT LEVEL. But NL have one of my favorite Ayu songs, Sparkle <3 But from these 3, i listen to Asfxx mostly, it's very sentimental to me :) |
Why:
1. (miss)understood it's definition of Ayu as ultra wide-ranging artists. There is no replays on this album. Every song sounds rare and unique. 1b. Duty's atmosphere reminds of me of nostalgic evenings. It's dark and melancholic, but still very catchy. 2. Love songs have also variety of types of songs. They sound unique and complete. 3. I am... / Rainbow are albums I started mostly with. They are songs that makes me cry just because i started to listen to Ayu with my friend and it reminds me of how amazing was to discover this music. 4. Secret got some amazing songs, but there is something a little incomplete in it... Dunno how to describe it. But still, amazing album. 4b. RnR C... There is something messy about this album, but I still think it's a good album. I just don't get the Don't look back hype and Lady Dynamite is awful. Ballads are kinda boring (expept You were...) 5. Memorial adress it's an amazing album, but I just don't listen to it mostly just because I was listening to it very much before. 6. MY STORY reminds me somewhere close to Duty (it's very nostalgic) But as Ma, i was listening to MS sooo much, so it gets plain. But it's an amazing album still :) 7. LOVEppears its very unique... But her voice is a bit infant... But I like to listen to it from times to times, there is some my favorites on it (Who... <3) 8. A song for xx also reminds me of my beginings with Ayu. My first "true old" Ayu song was Trust. It reminds me of a princess in a castle (;DDD) This album it's just a little too cute, and too repetable. 8b. Guilty is a very MASSIVE feeling album. Her worst vocals. It's a good album, but i found it a little rushed. 9. NEXT LEVEL feels rushed, incomplete, and loads of electronish sounds just makes me dizzy. BUT THERE IS SPARKLE I LOVE TO DEATH. |
I totally realized since posting my least favorite album/s yesterday that MY STORY is actually my least favorite. I guess I just forgot about it since it has so many forgetful album tracks. It took me awhile, but I'm pretty comfortable with this order:
1. LOVEppears & Duty 3. (miss)understood 4. A Song for ×× 5. Rock'n'Roll Circus 6. GUILTY 7. Secret 8. Memorial address 9. I am... 10. NEXT LEVEL 11. Love songs 12. RAINBOW 13. MY STORY |
Here's my rank:
1. Duty 2. MY STORY 3. Love songs 4. Memorial address 5. RAINBOW 6. LOVEppears 7. NEXT LEVEL. 8. Rock 'n' Roll Circus 9. I am... 10. A Song for XX 11. GUILTY |
1. Duty
It wasn't always the case, but this has to be my favorite from Ayu. I can play it the entire way through without ever getting bored with it, and I just love the moody and somewhat eerie "retro" sound. Plus, I'm blown away by her ability to write lyrics that manage to be simultaneously powerful and simple every time I read the translations for Duty, End of the World and SURREAL. In my opinion, this album doesn't get enough credit. 2. LOVEppears So many classic and personal all-time favorite Ayu songs are on this that it could almost work as a best-of. Honestly, the only tracks I'm not really into as much are TO BE and kanariya, and I don't truly dislike those either. This album was what made her a superstar, and I can understand why. 3. I am... I don't always play this the whole way through, but I respect all of it. This album is probably her greatest accomplishment, since she wrote and composed the entire thing, which is unusual. The title track is one of her most moving songs ever. 4. NEXT LEVEL The fact that I'm ranking this so high is kind of hilarious to me, since I pretty much hated this album when it came out. At the time I thought all the singles were terrible apart from Sparkle, and I remember just giving this a cursory listen and forgetting about it. I came back to it after seeing the fantastic AT09 performances of Rule, Sparkle and rollin' on YouTube, and I ended up falling in love. I'm still lukewarm about Days, though. :P 5. Rock'n'Roll Circus This was the album that brought me back to Ayu after losing interest in her for a while. I could do without both Sunset songs being on here, but for the most part it flows well and a lot of it is actually pretty gutsy (like Sexy little things, Microphone, and Don't look back, which I like to think of as vogue's evil twin). 6. MY STORY Another album that contains a lot of my personal favorites. This used to be my top album once, but it's been kicked down a few spots over time because it sometimes feels overly long and hard to get through in one sitting. I also think HONEY is really bad. :headache 7. Love songs This one and MY STORY are pretty much interchangeable for me as far as ranking goes, actually. This is consistently good, and I really enjoyed the singles for this one as they were being released. It's kind of a return to her early sound, which I appreciate. Bizarre interludes, though, and Thank U is quite annoying. 8. Memorial address I adore everything after Greatful days, and the title track might just be my favorite Ayu song of all. However, since it's a mini-album I can't justify ranking it any higher than this. 9. RAINBOW The biggest "grower" in her discography. It used to sit at the bottom of my list, but I've become fond of it. I still hate the last section, though, and think it would have been better off stopping after Voyage. That would have been such a classy move, since that song just screams "dramatic end-credits music." 10. (miss)understood In my personal opinion, this is her most overrated album. There are songs on here I really love, like the title track and alterna, but it's just too inconsistent for me. There was really no reason for her to buy the Sweetbox tracks, since she and her team can do much better work on their own. 11. Secret Another one that loses points for being quite inconsistent, with great tracks like Until that day... and JEWEL sharing space with turkeys like Born To Be... and Beautiful Fighters. 12. GUILTY Ironically, I was a big defender of this album when it was first released and lots of fans were complaining about it. Now, I'm just struck by how worn out Ayu sounds on this. She really needed a break, it seems. I do like parts of this, but it just seems rushed compared to her other albums and the abrupt mood shift(s) at the end are very jarring. 13. A Song for XX First, I'd like to say that I really appreciate this album lyrically when I read the translations. Her writing has never been more raw and honest, and I'd probably be more forgiving of this album's faults if I were fluent in Japanese. However, half of this album really bores me musically. I like all the singles and a handful of album tracks, but the rest isn't very exciting to me. |
Quote:
@GUILTY: Once again, I'm totally with you there. I think it was only done so they could include glitter, despite how entirely unfitting it was. I feel like MY ALL was only there after so that it didn't look really dumb having only one happy song (bipolar much?) in the tiny upbeat part of the album. untitled worked so well as an ending that they couldn't just put the happy songs there, so instead we're left with a depressing album that's happy for a tiny bit, then rapidly shifts back to being sad. Like you said, it's definitely jarring, to say the least. If only they didn't feel the need to include glitter :\ |

#2 Rock'n'Roll Circus #3 Next Level #4 Secret #5 GUILTY #6 Memorial Address #7 (miss)understood (even my prefer song of Ayu is Pride) #8 MY STORY #9 Duty #10 Rainbow #11 I am... #12 LOVEppears #13 A Song For XX I just want to say that I don't dislike the last, I just play them fewer than the others ^^ |
I cant decide which one I love the most but I RnR circus is my least favorite as a whole.
|
1. (miss)understood - best set of PVs and her best pop tunes, ballads and rock songs.
2. Duty - lots of good songs like Far Away, Scar, End of the World 3. Rainbow - the first track through to Hanabi and Over are a great selection of tunes. Plus the cover and booklet are gorgeous! 4. Love Songs - so far am still enjoying this album! 5. Rock N Roll Circus - again good PVs and the intro and interludes are interesting! 6. Secret - it has Momentum and many other good songs 7. Guilty - love the title track, amongst others. 8. Memorial Address - almost a perfect album apart from Angel's Song and Grateful Days. Some good PVs though! 9. Loveppears - Love the combo of To Be and End Roll but not a fan of Kanariya and especially Love ~ Destiny ~ 10. My Story - Not one I have listened to a while but it does have great songs like About You and Inspire. 11. I Am... - contains a lot of her classics and I do like a number of songs on here but listening to it as an album it does goes on a bit. 12. Next Level - singles are strong but album tracks not as memorable plus it has my most hated Ayu song ever, Curtain Call 13. A Song For xx - some good songs on here but sounds a bit dated and her vocals are quite high pitched Found it really hard ranking the albums in the middle and they change about. mi|kshake~ |
