Who do you think is the best vocalist?

Who in the music industry, can be Western, Asian, whatever, is the best vocalist? I mean the best SINGER. You can give multiple people. Just want to hear opinions. :D

NintendoHTF1242 10th August 2011 03:23 AM

KOKIA, her vocals in her more recent albums (The VOICE, REAL WORLD, KOKIA∞AKIKO~balance~) are absolutely incredible. She can go from her cute vocals to an operatic voice in a matter of seconds. It's astonishing. It's too bad she doesn't do too well on the ORICON charts :/

Here's a good performance of her performing Ave Maria

And this song ALWAYS gives me goosebumps...Just amazing how she transitions into the flawless chorus

I think Lady Gaga has a very nice, strong voice. I especially like it in the ballad "Speechless" off of her The Fame Monster album.

emi♡ 10th August 2011 03:43 AM

Cyndi Lauper! hahaha :heart

I really don't know who the BEST is...Voices I do love are, BENI, Emi Hinouchi, and mink...Jennifer Hudson...Lady Gaga does have amazing vocals...she just doesn't always utilize them...

Celine Dion has one of those crazy voices...along with alan omfg :tired she's amazing.

I will forever have a love affair with Steve Perry's voice from Journey. There's just no comparison to those vocals.

Another male vocalist I'll always love, is Geoff Tate from Queensryche :luv2 He sometimes comes close to Steve for me. They both can just hold notes like no one else.

Eiko Shimamiya has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life.

oh hiromi too. She has one song where she holds out this note...kills me every time. She's amazing.

I think its really cool when there are amazing vocalists from Japan, because usually their voices are quite unique.

Sometimes, big voices here in the States can...sound a little similar lol sometimes...

Kanzaki 10th August 2011 04:10 AM

Idk really. But I can list my all time favorites.

Starting out with someone who is, sadly, no longer with us.
Everything about this man's voice is just perfection.

Freddie Mercury in one of my favorite songs too!

OLIVIA's voice is pretty damn amazing too. The things she can do with that voice...wow. Some of her songs just sends chills down my spine.

I guess this is not the best song to showcase what she can do, but it's just frigging amazing.

This girl is just amazing. Her voice makes me cry, it may be because of her lyrics are just so spot on. I consider translating every single song by her into english, because they are just...wow. And that voice, raw, but still smooth.

And of course, MY QUEEN!

bondingo 10th August 2011 04:34 AM

The first one that came to mind was Christina. She's just incredible. There's no denying how incredibly talented she is as a vocalist. She has her off days, but even then she still sounds better than 95% of the artists out there. I also think MISIA is an insanely talented singer. Her voice just gives me chills. The way she belts is unbelievable. And then of course Celine Dion. Just...amazing. I honestly don't even think I could rank those three in any order because they're all just amazing.

MemorialAddress 10th August 2011 05:09 AM

Hands down, Xtina and Celine Dion. Both seem to always sound amazing no matter what :heart

Mimichild 10th August 2011 05:18 AM

East:
BIG MAMA!!!: No explaination needed!
TiA: I love her voice & her Humming album
alan: Love her ability to wail & overall music
keiko such a unique voice!
DBSK/Tohoshinki Oh come on, they are like the Korean version of Boys II Men!
Namie Amuro: Can really sing a ballad (Will, Baby Don't Cry,etc)
Coco Lee: Considered the Mariah Carey of Asia and I can see why!
Jasmine Her voice is really strong

West (just listen to them and you'll know why!):
Mariah Carey :thud MY VOCAL IDOL!!!
Whitney Houston....the singing legend
Sade
Phyllis Hyman
Lisa Stansfield
Michael Jackson
Amy Lee
Luther Vandross

Couldn't name just one!

Kanzaki 10th August 2011 05:39 AM

Omg, definitely MJ too.
SORRY MJ, I FORGOT YOU ;_;

XFER 10th August 2011 05:49 AM

I think people sometimes mistake who is the best singer, with their favorite artists.

I think alan has a gorgeous voice and she can do some acrobatics with her voice sometimes. Céline Dion is technically great, but sometimes I don't feel passion in her singing. Didrik Solli-Tangen has a great voice but needs a little polishing. Alessandro Safina has an impressive voice as well.

MemorialAddress 10th August 2011 05:53 AM

^Yeah, you're exactly right about that first statement :yes

My favorite singers ARE my favorite artists! :laugh Most of them anyway.

xLitax 10th August 2011 06:10 AM

@Nintendo Wow. :heart what an amazing singer!
@Kanzaki I feel slightly offended you thought you had to show me an example of Freddie. :P
@Chels and bondingo - I LOVE Celine's voice. It's truly one of a kind. And she can reach notes so effortlessly. And Christina is just... :weep... so wonderful

pommy48 10th August 2011 06:16 AM

alan - The wails she does is just incredible :laugh They just cleanse your soul
Spoiler:

Amei - I've been listening to her for my entire life and her voice still send waves down my spine!

ayaka - I was thinking the other day about how much I missed her music ;_;

Ayaka Hirahara - Her voice is just so...clean :luv2

^ :hi5 so true. Such a great song :weep

Not Fade Away 10th August 2011 06:58 AM

I think Christina Aguilera is an amazing singer, but she is such a ***** that sometimes her diva-status overshadows her talent *ahem*. Just my opinion though.

I love Celine Dion & Barbara Streisand. I can't say I listen to a whole lot of their music, but their voices are amazzzzzing.

Lady Gaga has a really good voice, but -- like others have said -- she needs to utilize it more. When she does acoustic stuff she sounds amazing.

Reminds me of The Highlander too, omg. Now I'm all nostalgic.

xLitax 10th August 2011 07:26 AM

@Not Fade Away Christina's not a *****. :D

Huaka 10th August 2011 08:03 AM

I think Alan and Lyrico are pretty good. Ayaka's nice too.

miroro 10th August 2011 07:42 PM

like others said, Xtina <3

another AMAZING singers are Horan and Haewon:luv2 omg, just listen to them

and of course, Whale

i must say Whale has my fav voice ever.

wildconnetta 10th August 2011 09:13 PM

From asia, Xiah Junsu, alan, KOKIA, MISIA, Hyorin(SISTAR), Lena Park and Bom(2NE1) are my favs.

From the west, Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Björk, Freddie Mercury, Christina Aguilera and Amy Winehouse. Adele could qualify when I'm not bored of her music cos it is played here so damn often X_X.

Kazeyomi 10th August 2011 09:40 PM

KOKIA is totally amazing though. One of my favorite singers and one of the best japanese vocalist as well imo.

Another great but underrated japanese singer is Kanon.

From the west I'd add Loreena McKennitt and Hayley Westenra to the best female vocals. These two ladies's voices are absolutely gorgeous.

slashess 11th August 2011 12:33 AM

Chris Cornell...he is the Mariah Carey of male singers. Awesome range, clear voice and not to mention quite the hottie ;)

You can hear him in Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, and he solo stuff

about fav artists versus good vocalists...I really wish my favorite artists were good vocalists...

and conversely, I wish I could listen to the music of some of these great vocalists...but a lot of the time...it just bores the hell out of me.

koumori 11th August 2011 01:36 AM

Going to go with the obvious and say alan. :yes Her voice is incredible.

Who else...Leona Lewis. Her music..is good, a little boring, but her voice is beautiful. Also have to mention other obvious contenders like Celine Dion, Freddie Mercury...

Trying to think of someone different..:laugh I love a lot of different singers, but the best vocalist..I always feel is someone who has a lot of control over their voice, if not full control. Hitting high notes doesn't really matter as long as you give a flawless performance, using your voice as it should be used. :) For that reason I'll point out a singer named Cordelia, her voice is crazy good. She has so much control.

Oh! And I can't forget Tim Booth :heart

TofuBunny 11th August 2011 01:59 AM

in the west like many people said, Xtina has an incredible voice :thud .. The only thing I liked about Burlesque was her singing :laugh

and omg I'm surprised no one mentioned CSJH The Grace. I love their cover of Dancing Queen :luv2:

Also SISTAR's Hyorin is soo underrated

f(x)'s Luna:

And my personal favorites, SHINee's Onew and Jonghyun :heart

There are so many more but I don't want to spam this thread with too many videos :laugh

Definitely. This is why I can just sometimes listen to opera and just...admire what I hear. That is some serious voice control.

I used to not think so, and I used to be OBSESSED with her, but then she called my girl Gaga a man and called Kelly Osbourne a fat-something-or-other, and I adore Kelly, so she's really rubbing me the wrong way (no pun on genie-in-a-bottle intended) lately.

I can't respect artists that pick fights for no reason :(. I honestly wish these were just rumors, but they were actually recorded on video (or other forms of media).

I still think she's an amazing vocalist though (and one of the best), and I love her music, so that will never change.

------------------

In other news, I miss late 80s early to mid 90's Whitney Houston. That woman could sanggg.

butterfly_ayu 17th August 2011 07:08 AM

Freddie Mercury was the first person on my mind when I saw the thread title. :D He'll always be the best for me. There is no doubt how great a singer he is, so there is not much to explain. And then next up will be Vitas. He is a singer from Russia, and I love his unique, high pitch voice. The sad thing is, he seems to lip-sync quite frequently = = I'd only seen a couple of his actual live-singing performances on youtube, and they are all amazing. A-mei Zhang is also a great singer. I don't know if this sounds right, but her voice feels so "clean" to me. I can't find anyone in the music industry with a voice as "clean" as hers.

AyUta 17th August 2011 07:20 AM

Christina said the Gaga comment back when Gaga was still new and not very popular because everyone was saying her VMA performance of Keeps Gettin' Better was a Gaga ripoff, so she said she didn't even know who Lady Gaga was, or if it was a man or a woman (thinking she might be a man because it sounds like a drag name). She's since said that she thinks Gaga is innovative and that she respects her as an artist.

Her and Kelly have always been saying things back and forth to each other, and that's Kelly's fault, because anyone who knows who she is knows she's a complete ***** who talks **** about every other celebrity and then plays the victim when it comes back to bite her in the ass. She recently just said to Christina, "Maybe she is just becoming the fat ***** she was born to be", on her recent weight gain.

Just wanted to clarify :D

koumori 17th August 2011 09:05 PM

Just to clarify, Kelly said that ever since she got into the music scene Christina was always dropping hints about her weight and calling her fat. :shrug It depends what interviews you read, but to be honest I have to agree with Not Fade Away and say that Christina has never been the nicest celebrity around.

But that's nothing against her voice, or her music, so there's nothing to defend her about. It's not like any of us really know her personally, so who knows what she's really like away from a camera? :laugh She could be super-nice, or the opposite. It doesn't really matter.

xLitax 17th August 2011 10:09 PM

^ Their whole "feud" started when Kelly called Christina the most disgusting human being in the world.

I just thought of a really good male vocalist. Josh Groban is really talented. :yes

My honest opinion is that they're both headstrong, opinionated women that have disagreed backstage or whatever and since then, they've both had access to cameras/interviews where they can publicly insult eachother :laugh I'm not really interested in their catty talk which belongs in high school, I always find it childish when celebrities bring up old 'feuds'. This is off-topic and once again I'll say that this isn't me saying "Christina has a bad voice" or "Kelly should stfu", just me talking about their silly interview quotes over the years. Christina still has a standout voice.

owlflight 18th August 2011 12:04 AM

For male singer, I would say Josh Groban (going to see him live later this year!). There are some obvious choices for female but the surprise for me was Ayaka. I think she is a great vocalist and though I do not speak Japanese, I must have listened to First Message 10 times in a row when I bought it. I appreciate a singer that is technically good and that can really sing with emotion too.

MeltingCORE 18th August 2011 01:26 AM

Well Ayu is my fave singer. But I don't think she has the best voice.

I love three lovely ladies who I swear are sirens. They are that good.

-Lia [J-Pop/J-Core singer.] [example song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0XQH-bUk7Y]
-Justine Suissa from OceanLab [Trance vocalist.] [example song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vm4JvWSpEc0]
-alan [C-Po-well. most of you know her.] [example song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giQRV1kI8L0]

Kanzaki 18th August 2011 05:04 AM

Agreeing with some and just thought of some more ^^

Oh yeah, before Whitney Houston tore herself up, she had an amazing voice too :yes

A good vocalist would ideally, to me, be someone like Freddie, because his voice went about 2 octaves I think and he could switch really fast between keys, plus he just NEVER messed up live. He was the perfect singer. But in reality there are a lot of different ways to sing, different techniques and some of them doesn't appeal to everyone. I can't stand Celine Dion's voice for example, but she is a fantastic vocalist, no doubt.

Regardless of their personalities (from what I've heard they're both kinda...odd) Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera are both really talented vocalists as well.

I think the faeroese singer Eivør Pálsdóttir has got some serious voice control/talent as well. She can go vibrato, she can go high, low, she can go whispery (is that a technical term? lol, sounds like I don't know wth I'm talking about xD) Again, singing styles may not appeal to everyone, but you can't deny she's an amazing singer.

I feel the same way, essentially.

I didn't mean to troll by saying that comment about Christina in the first place, so I apologize if it seemed that way. I used to be a huge fan of Christina the artist, AND Christina the person, but after I saw/heard/read a lot of things about her, I started to not like Christina the person.

Regarding Christina the artist, I still hold true that she is one of my all-time favorite vocalists and not many can top her. I would definitely attend one of her concerts in the future (and have attended two of her concerts in the past), but I just don't like her as a person anymore. It's not even just the Gaga or Kelly stuff, it's also a ton of other artists I respect as well.

Anyway, considering that this isn't what this thread is about, I'm going to drop it after this. I don't want to spam/troll/whatever.

[/end]

I really really REALLY love Sara Bareilles' voice. I don't know if anyone else agrees, but she just has this amazing edgy voice that I could listen to for hours. :luv2

CHE.R.RY 18th August 2011 10:18 PM

I think a lot of people are amazing vocalists...it's impossible for me to choose just one.

Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Freddie Mercury (Queen)
Elton John
Madonna (at one time lol)
Christina Aguilara
Lady Gaga (yes I think her voice is good lol)
Beyonce
Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine)
Adele
Mariah Carey
Shania Twain
Alan Dawa Dolma (most of the time she sings in her average voice, but when she shows off her mountainous vocals...it's breathtaking)
Utada Hikaru
Emi Hinouchi
ayaka Lida (such a beautiful voice)
Hyorin (SISTAR)

That's all I can think of at the moment...but I know there's more :think.

PoetGirl 22nd August 2011 09:28 AM

Kanzaki 24th August 2011 09:20 AM

Andrea Bocelli! That reminds me of my love for Luciano Pavarotti. He had my favorite voice in opera, ever. Him singing Caro Mio Ben...omg. I don't know a word of italian, but that is just beautiful.

I either like big, strong, powerful voices, or soft, light but still strong voices

So:

Alicia Keys
alan
ayaka
Baek Ji Young
Chihiro Onitsuka
KOKIA
Beyonce
A-mei Chang
Adele

Also this group always has four or five of the prettiest voices ever. They've changed group members a couple of times and this is the most recent line-up:

And one more. I've only been watching Glee for a little while, by my god Chris Colfer's voice is just amazing. Almost every solo performance he gives is enough to leave me in tears. This one especially:
