IMO her voice was beautiful in 2002/2004 but since 2008 less and less ! she can't hit high notes like before and she sing too nasally in live compared to studio !

isthisLOL? 1st December 2012 12:56 AM

Check for her performances in the early 2000s in general, maybe even grab a random concert from that time. She was never a good vocalist, but those were her best times.

tokyoxjapanxfan 1st December 2012 02:28 AM

The performance of Lovin It with m-flo from 2001? was always one of my favorites. Was it a music station special, perhaps? The same one where Ayu and Keiko and BoA and Kuu sang their duets.

The quality if this may be lacking though...

emi♡ 1st December 2012 02:44 AM

^aww that was the first live I ever saw. All three performances. Nostalgia.

random post.

Any performance of 'Shine More' really. She uses more of her chest voice with that song and you can tell that she can totally sing that way, she just doesn't.

^There are better performances of this song but ever since Namie got popular again, Avex has been deleting her YouTube vids like nobody's business.

I Will is another good example:

CherryMoon 1st December 2012 08:12 AM

^ I Will in her So Crazy tour is really good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiwl5rZoiDA around 4 mins into the video.
Queen of Hip-pop in her 2005 tour is really good too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ifCgovCJNc
Her Live style 2006's vocals onwards decline maybe except for some performances on her Play tour like Come.... I cant think of really good vocally ones.haha

SunshineSlayer 2nd December 2012 09:07 AM

^ It's not a car park. It's Universal Studios Japan. lol

too nasal :no

You can find vocally strong Namie performances in the same place you can find Utada's, Ayu's, Koda's and Mika's... Dreamland!

*runz*

utada is having the best vocal technique among ayu mika kuu...imo

isthisLOL? 22nd December 2012 01:54 PM

Utada's vocal technique is that of an amateur that has never taken singing lessons, she is destroying her own vocal chords with her technique - and it's quite clear in her recent performances that her vocal chords are severely damaged. She isn't supporting her headvoice properly and generally oversinging/shouting in higher areas of her chestvoice.
(The same goes for Mika, Kuu and pre-2010 Ayu, they all have awful technique - and Namie practically just talks the melodies so...there isn't really any technique)

Chibi-Chan 22nd December 2012 02:06 PM

I'm really annoyed that everyone always says Utada's vocal technique is so superior to all others, just because she is Utada, when it's simply not true. People may like her voice best, but I would be grateful if people could personal taste keep apart from vocal technique. I love squeaky Ayu from 2001, like many other, but that doesn't mean Ayu had a great vocal technique back then... A lot of people actually would say the girl just can't sing.

This, so much. There is a big difference between "artist xyz has good vocal technique" and "I like artist xyz's vocals" - in the same way that "I like song xyz" and "song xyz is good" are not the same.
Utada's vocal technique is one of the most awful in the entire Pop business, she has a beautiful, beautiful tone(one of my personal favorite voices, actually), but her technique is plain bad and damaging - she can't sing. Her voice is beautiful, but she just can't sing well.

UHPlus 23rd December 2012 02:35 AM

i love hikki!!

and if people like to listen to vocally and technically strong singer, go listen to opera singer or broadway musical artists instead. Leave pop singers alone...

isthisLOL? 23rd December 2012 02:52 AM

Hikki is one of the pop singers with worst technique out there though...there's plenty of pop singers that sing far better. Hell, Britney Spears used to have better technique.
I hate this "oh, it's Pop music, it's OK if they suck at what they do" argument.
And I won't listen to other people instead because I love Hikki - I just think she needs to seriously work on her vocals. Her songwriting and composition is absolutely top-notch.

Chibi-Chan 23rd December 2012 03:14 AM

^how comes that I find her compositions sooooo boring when everyone else finds them so good? lol And her arrangements... boring boring boring!!! xD

isthisLOL? 23rd December 2012 02:55 PM

Maybe she's just not your thing, she does have a very quiet approach to songwriting with verrrrrry long build-ups.

Chibi-Chan 23rd December 2012 03:27 PM

^yeah, I guess that's it. And I have to say I don't like her voice. Nya, that's so not really correct. It's more like, her voice also always sounds the same for me what makes it again boring. I don't know how to explain this well, but for me it's like she would save her voice in a sweet, beautiful casket and never let it out.
I really tried to get into her and everytime I hear a song of her and think "yeah, that's it!" nothing more comes. It's over before it really began.
Besides most of her fans piss me off. I always thought Ayu fans are crazy over their goddess, but Hikki fans... Everything she does is gold and she is always the best, regardless what she does. She has the best vocals out there, she writes the best lyrics (which are one of the most cliché I ever read, and don't let me start with her English lyrics...), she has the best videos... She is simply superior to everyone else. I can't stand this "holier-than-thou" thing. I guess I like Kuu fans most. They seem to be always happy with what she releases. Of course she is the best for her fans, but not the way Hikki is for her fans. And even when they are not happy with a Kuu release, they are like "well, she will release something else in future and I'm sure there will be something I like".

Hikki is my all time favorite pop musician and imo she ***** all over everyone in the business when it's about lyrics, compositions and arrangments...

That's being said... I hate her fandom for the same reasons u do. And even if I love her music and her voice, she is one of the worst performers I ever saw... Bad karaoke level.

Chibi-Chan 24th December 2012 01:05 AM

^I have nothing against fans like you, I mean when you don't think she is the best why would she be your favourite pop artist? xD
But I can't stand people who declare their opinion as fact...

I was really disappointed with her concerts I watched... Most of the time I adore artists more live and I hoped that this would be the same with Hikki too, but...

Uemarasan 31st December 2012 04:26 PM

There are some good I Will performances I've heard.

Lyrics-wise, Hikki is mediocre. Sometimes she comes up with the goods, sometimes she lays an egg. There is always a level of depth she seems incapable of. But she's very consistent when it comes to composition and arrangement; one of the best in the business.

Most fans are annoying. There are very few you can engage with in a meaningful conversation.

mizuki-7 31st December 2012 05:52 PM

I don't agree with the arrangements ! I really like Utada ! One of the few singer that I like almost all of the discography but I find that some of her songs have very poor arrangements & no diversity !
