music in sakanaction's first thread [サカナクション]

サカナクション
Sakanaction (サカナクション) is a Japanese rock band from Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Their music is a mix of alternative rock, electronic, pop, and New Wave styles, and is thus difficult to classify under one category. The band consists of five members: Ichirō Yamaguchi, Motoharu Iwadera, Ami Kusakari, Emi Okazaki, and Keiichi Ejima.
They are enjoying increasing popularity, hitting mainstream success with their records clinching positions within the Top 10 on Japan's Oricon charts.

ExodusUK 5th March 2013 02:00 PM

The tracklist for sakanaction's self-titled 6th album, that is to be released on 13 March 2013, has been revealed.

In addition to the single songs "Boku to Hana", "Yoru no Odoriko" and "Music", there will be "Aoi", the theme song for NHK's football broadcasts for 2013. There is also a song titled "INORI", in which Aoki Takamasa took part in (he previously remixed "YES NO", included in "Identity" single). There is a total of 14 songs and it is listed below.

Furthermore, the limited edition first press version of the album will include the bonus track, a self-remixed version of "Bach no Senritsu wo Yoru ni Kiita Sei desu."

There will be an album preview listening party held at Tokyo's Liquidroom Ebisu on the 8th of March. Similar to what they did for DocumentaLy's release, all songs will be revealed for the first time to public during the listening party. However, it is yet unknown whether there will be a Ustream this time for those not attending the party.

I am unbelievably excited for their new album. I think it's the now the rule that their release is the album of the year.

Yoru no Odoriko has been my favourite of the singles.

That's the song that got me into them! I love their last album, the last two tracks especially. :love

new album rocs

Delicious n Bold 14th March 2013 02:23 PM

映画 Is a weird song though
Only real flaw

relmy 27th March 2013 02:38 AM

The new album is amazing! I'm really impressed with it.

Only downside is that Inori is at the start, it's my favourite track.

setsuka 27th March 2013 03:21 AM

after a few listens I deleted everything after Aoi safe Music

I like experimental sometimes but ehhhh it was soooo boring and just didn't grow on me at all

happy they are slaying the charts tho

relmy 9th April 2013 11:22 PM

B-b-boring? :'( This makes me sad. The new album is amazing. I feel like it twists and turns through all the styles they've tried so masterfully.

I don't know how they'll top it.

Kacku 10th November 2014 11:10 PM

Random thread revival time! Their new single Sayonara wa Emotion / Hasu no Hana is excellent: Sayonara wa Emotion is just amazing, easily my favourite song of theirs after Music, Hasu no Hana and the Ame remix are really pleasant, and the remix of Music is unexpectedly awesome, it completely transforms the song with great results. :heart Please tell me everyone else loved the single as much as I did. :P

thinkingoutloud89 10th November 2014 11:50 PM

I havent listend to them since Ame lol

chikocchi 11th November 2014 08:23 AM

The remix of Music was such a pleasant surprise!
Now I have two amazing versions of Music to listen to ><
Both of the A-sides are good, but I prefer "Eureka" to both of them
The remix of "Ame" is lovely tho

Kacku 12th November 2014 07:42 AM

^ You got me curious about Eureka, so I went and downloaded the single, and I have to say you were right! The other two songs on that single can go sit in a corner, and I still prefer Sayonara wa Emotion, but Eureka is a damn great song, exactly the kind of stuff I like from them!

Xianghua 19th January 2018 10:41 PM

Alright, I know this thread is years old but I love Sakanaction and I refuse to let it die.

Sakanaction's latest release was Tabun, Kaze in 2016.

I believe through 2017 they were touring?

This year, Sakanaction will be playing at VIVA LA ROCK on 5/3 at Saitama Super Arena

as well as the METROCK festival in Osaka and Tokyo.
Osaka: 5/19, 5/20 @ METROCK Osaka Tokusetsu Kaijou
Tokyo: 5/26, 5/27 @ Shinkiba Wakasu Seaside Park

Kacku 1st February 2018 11:30 AM

I want to help keep this thread alive too!

Last year they also released the music video for SORATO, which is basically a reworked version of moon with some lyrics:

I loved moon the moment I heard it on the single, so I like SORATO as well. And speaking of moon and SORATO: I've always felt like the lalala's in moon (and the main vocal melody in SORATO) were lifted straight from another Sakanaction song, it just sounds so familiar. Am I just imagining things or does it sound familiar for a reason?

I wish they'd release things again, it's been long enough since Tabun, Kaze. I was listening to DocumentaLy and sakanaction earlier this week and it made me want a new album from them so bad.

Xianghua 2nd February 2018 04:52 AM

^ yay! thank you!
I've missed this release :O but unfortunately all their videos are blocked from me :( I had no idea they blocked their stuff in some countries because when I discovered them I was living in Japan at the time....if I would have known, I would have bought all their stuff before leaving :headache

Yes, I want them to release again too! I couldn't believe they hadn't released new material at all in 2017

Kacku 2nd February 2018 12:33 PM

^ Ugh, sucks that their stuff is blocked for you. I had no idea either since I've always been able to access their videos but I guess it's some weird region thing.

Seems like SORATO hasn't been released in any other way, just the music video on YouTube, so no wonder you missed it. If you're interested in hearing the song and can't access it, I can try and rip it. :)

Oh, and what a good time to start discussing their releases again, because they just announced three new releases coming soon!!

First, their first best album named 魚図鑑 (Sakanazukan; Fish Picturebook?) will be released on March 28th! It comes in several different editions (Fully Produced Limited Premium Box with 3CDs and Sakana Daizukan booklet; First Press Limited Edition with 2CDs, DVD/Blu-ray and Sakanazukan booklet; Limited Edition with 2CDs and Sakanazukan booket), all limited it seems? The editions with 2CDs will include 34 tracks (including Shintakarajima, Music, Yoru no Odoriko, and one new song), and the third CD included in the Premium Box edition will include another 15 songs. The DVD and Blu-ray discs will include 20 select live performances of the songs on the album. The booklets will apparently contain "a large amount of data about their songs".

Second, they will release a live DVD & Blu-ray of "SAKANAQUARIUM2017 10th ANNIVERSARY Arena Session 6.1ch Sound Around"! Release date TBA.

And finally, they're bringing a still-unnamed new studio album! Release date TBA.

Xianghua 3rd February 2018 04:54 AM

This is great news! And we just discussed no new material yesterday :laugh
As if the best album jam-packed with content wasn't enough, we'll get a new studio album! :D

I'm really looking forward to the new studio album more than anything but I'm also curious about the 15-track special third CD in the box edition of the best album!

Here's SORATO for you. :) The sound quality isn't the best, but I hope it's fine enough!

thinkingoutloud89 3rd February 2018 12:06 PM

kinda want the limited edition

Meat Pao 3rd February 2018 12:28 PM

Holy shit I had no idea there was a sakanaction thread. Tabun, Kaze and SORATO are 10/10. I especially love how they transition from Identity to Tabun, Kaze in their lives throughout 2017:

Crossing fingers that they perform at Fuji Rock Festival this year cos I'll be going!!

^ I have a feeling they'll put Sayonara, Eureka, Tabun Kaze and SORATO in the new album coming out later this year! Doesn't make sense not to include Tabun Kaze tbh, they perform it so much you'd think that it was a hit with the fans.

Not so stoked over the 3rd disc's tracklist but I'll wait till pictures of the packaging come out to decide if I should get it!!

Kacku 23rd February 2018 03:39 PM

^ Oh yeah, I completely forgot to consider that they might be put on the new album, especially with Sayonara and Eureka being so old. And I do find it a bit weird that Shintakarajima is on this release, but not Tabun, Kaze or any of the other singles.

I'm not too excited about the 3rd disc's track list either, I thought it would have some more special content.

Xianghua 25th February 2018 02:01 AM

omg I'm devastated that Eureka and Sayonara wa Emotion isn't included. (and no goodbye??? or did i read it wrong) :( MY FAVORITES! but I will settle for them being included on the new album

My guess is that it's probably too different from their other songs that they feel it wouldn't fit on the studio album? Plus it was a huge hit in Japan apparently, cos my godsis who studies there said when it came out it was playing almost everywhere, so it's probably there to help push units too!

They'll be competing with 2 best albums ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION's releasing on the same day, so looks like they'll occupy the top 3, just not sure in which order haha

Edit: Turns out AKFG won't be releasing 2, but 3! Lol

I bought the 2CD version of Sakanazukan yesterday so I took pictures of the packaging and some interesting parts of the booklet.

At first I was like "book of fishes? what is that suppose to be?" but the 'fishes' are their songs! :laugh so each page contains a song, facts like length, recording time, release, ect. then a paragraph description and lyrics. It's pretty cool!
It has some information on the members and some pictures of actual fish as well lol

Of course I can't take pictures of the whole booklet because it's a lot but if there is any particular song you want, I can do!

Meat Pao 7th February 2019 05:19 PM

Hey guys! I'm planning to ballot for tickets for their 2019 tour via LINE Ticket but I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about it because I can only enter the ballot if I type in my name in katakana (I have an English name, and the system literally says my name is invalid when typed exactly as in my passport w Eng characters).

I'm a little afraid they might reject me at the door since it won't be an exact match as my passport, and I'm all the more doubtful cos I can't pay with an overseas credit card (though I'm planning to use my godsister's who lives in Japan, but again going back to the name thing, I'm just hoping it's not a case where they won't allow foreign attendees).

Has anyone had any experience with a sakanaction gig to help clear my doubts?

Xianghua 9th February 2019 05:51 AM

Sorry I have never been to their live so this may not be helpful, but I had the exact same problem when I went to Namie Amuro's Finally tour. I had to go to a special line and explain, and they asked me my phone number and address associated with my account. They let me in. This may or may not be reassuring to you :x

But I wouldn't say it's a situation where they don't let foreign fans in, because they just had a lottery application for overseas fans, and the previous tour they had a special page for overseas fans buying the general ticket sales. I think it's pretty likely that after the overseas lottery results (feb. 19) they'll have general tickets on sale.

Meat Pao 9th February 2019 02:42 PM

^ Thanks for the advice!! Where did you get the info that there was an overseas lottery? I don't see any details of it on their official site...

Kacku 9th February 2019 03:10 PM

^ They posted about a lottery for overseas fans on Facebook and Twitter yesterday. It will start on February 19th, no other details yet.

Meat Pao 9th February 2019 03:19 PM

^ Wow awesome thanks!! Totally missed it on my feed! Really appreciate the help.

Xianghua 9th February 2019 10:52 PM

Thanks Kacku, I misunderstood because I saw "drawing" and thought it meant the drawing of the results.

Meat Pao, sorry! Was just about to post back and correct myself.

Kacku 10th February 2019 04:07 AM

^ I get that, I also understood it that way at first reading, but I thought they must have meant that the lottery will start then since this was the first announcement I've seen.

Meat Pao, I hope you find a way to get to the concert and have a great time! :)

On a completely different topic... Whatever happened to that new album they first announced a year ago?

https://media.giphy.com/media/JzOyy8vKMCwvK/200.gif

Meat Pao 10th February 2019 07:55 PM

^ Haha thanks!! I actually caught them last year when they performed at Fuji Rock Festival and it was so phenomenal, I was sad that it was only a 1h set (and they didn't perform Tabun, Kaze which I really hoped they would right after Identity, but it ended up being Rookie instead).

And YES I've been waiting for the album for way too long!! I'm hoping it'll be announced around March when Sakanazukan was released since they did make it seem like it was a one-year plan... and especially since this upcoming arena tour doesn't have a name yet (It's just a generic "sakanaction arena tour 2019" which is... very uncharacteristic of them haha)

Kacku 11th February 2019 02:14 AM

^ I love Rookie so I would've gotten my life. :laugh But hopefully they'll do Tabun, Kaze on the tour!

Ooh, when you put it like that, it does sound like an announcement could be coming... I hope you're right! I just don't understand why they talked about the album so early if they intended to keep sitting on it for another year.

Xianghua 19th February 2019 12:17 PM

Overseas ticket application has started, with English instructions!
http://sakanaction.jp/feature/tour2019_ticket_oversea

And yeah, I've been wondering about that album too :o

Meat Pao 19th February 2019 12:49 PM

Yes!! Are any of you guys applying? It's first come first serve rather than balloting so gotta snap them up quick.

Xianghua 21st February 2019 09:08 AM

I wish :( you'll have to tell us how the show is, if you can!!

Meat Pao 7th March 2019 06:06 PM

I was just about to come share the same news. :laugh That title sure is... something. But I'm excited that the album is coming (sooner than I expected) and eager to hear further announcements!

FINALLYYYYY

Bigtop 8th March 2019 07:29 AM

What's behind the 834.194 name? It's kinda odd, there seems to be some meaning.

Xianghua 23rd March 2019 01:54 PM

New song Wasurerarenai no is featured in a SoftBank CM! Yamaguchi even appears at the end.

It's funny, because this CM is so fitting to their PV style :laugh

Edit: ANOTHER new song!! - never mind meat pao was faster XD

Meat Pao 23rd March 2019 03:03 PM

They also shared another CM tie-in with Calorie Mate for another new song, "Nylon String" (ナイロンの糸). A 60-second version is set to air during Music Station on March 29 with a longer preview according to their Facebook.

Both songs sound interesting so far!! Curious to hear them both in their entirety as they seem just short of building up to a climax in their previews hahaha.

Xianghua 23rd March 2019 03:12 PM

It sounds so dreamy :love, but I think I like Wasurerarenai yo better

Meat Pao 29th March 2019 06:04 AM

Album postponed to June 19 :(

Kacku 29th March 2019 06:05 PM

Aww, shame that the album was postponed. :(

oaristos 29th March 2019 06:24 PM

Both "Wasurerarenai no" and "Nylon String" sound amazing. I haven't been following them for a while now, but every time I listen to any of their songs I'm reminded that they're such an incredible band. :heart It's sad that the album has been postponed, but I'm still excited for it! :yes

Why is it being postponed?

Xianghua 30th March 2019 03:42 AM

^ They're not happy with the outcome and they want more time to work on it.

a longer preview of nylon string, 60 second calorie mate CM

Meat Pao 30th March 2019 06:32 AM

Reminds me of how Endless took them 1 year to work on after many revisions (the demo snippet that played in a clip in the DocumentaLy DVD sounded quite different!). I love that Ichiro (and the rest of the band) is/are such perfectionists cos it shows in their music.

Oh well, we've waited for 6 years, what's 2 more months right? HAHA

Xianghua 14th April 2019 07:33 PM

Thanks, Meat Pao!
Now it makes sense one of the new song names is minority, I thought it was random that it was on the goods.

It was interesting to hear September!

Meat Pao 17th April 2019 11:12 AM

Covers are out: http://sakanaction.jp/news/detail/1685?categoryId=1%2C2

Don't really understand the Japanese that well but seems to be a double-sided cover? I quite like it!

Xianghua 18th April 2019 08:17 PM

It was designed by an artist duo Nerhol consisting of Ryuta Iida (not the poet lol) and Tanaka Yoshihisa.

You can see their work here!

Meat Pao 21st May 2019 06:21 PM

Just came back from their concert at Osaka Jo Hall and it was AMAZING! The art direction and visuals are unlike their past concerts that I've seen on YouTube. A large chunk of the show made use of the screens (almost ceiling-to-floor vertical rectangles, 13 of them that spread even beyond the stage) and a translucent curtain with projections on it (which they have done before). Really nice.

Thought I'd share some impressions for select songs in the setlist:

Spoiler:

Opening: Starts off with Ichiro behind the curtain with just him strumming his acoustic guitar to September (later performed in full before the encore) till the first chorus. The camera angles were from the top and from the back, before it starts playing the album teaser clip that was posted to YouTube with the counter to 834.194.

2. Yoru no Odoriko: Screens use the same visuals as the past few tours with the geisha dancing in a black CGI grid box thing lol. But I love this song so much I'm not complaining!

3. Kagerou: The screens for this song was really cool and colourful. Mostly shows a young female mouthing the words to the song with geometric shapes bouncing about from my memory. Given the production value I think it might be used as a music video at some point. Also the song structure is slightly different which I think might be the album version (as opposed to Sakanazukan's movie version) with a guitar solo and a bit with just the synths and Yamaguchi singing the chorus with an echo effect.

4. Minority (New song): I love this song! It's super groovy with the same vibes as Kagerou. Also has the "gospel chorus" element that is distinctly sakanaction.

7. Eureka: Made use of the screens and projection curtains at the same time. Screens were of a woman looking out a bus window and tearing while images of Tokyo in black and white were projected on the curtain.

9. Nylon no Ito (new song): To me it sounds like whatever's in the Calorie Mate ad with little surprises. But I can't remember much haha

12. new song: This one has ambient music vibes (with a super long intro, not sure if it'll be the same in the album). The melody at some point actually borrows from mellow's chorus.

13. new song: This song is about peanuts or something (the screens at the sides literally show a woman cracking open peanuts and stuff). The main screen looks pretty music video-esque too. There was fire and stuff on stage for the chorus! Very Ayu-like. Lol

14. INORI
: This shit sounds so good in a live setting, the bass is amazing. The stage gets elevated here so the band performs the DJ set from above, like their NF Launch tour.

15. SORATO: Seems to have added embellishments to the entire track compared to the music video. Opening has a slightly robotic woman's voice saying "SORATO". Additional effects here and there throughout the track.

17. Shin Takarajima: The visuals for this are super colourful! This time they even got a group of dancers with pom poms a la the music video which is something refreshing. The main screens also feature the same dancers dancing in a black room. Really cool.

Before performing September, Ichiro also explains why the album is titled 834.194 - turns out it's paying homage to their Hokkaido roots as it's the distance from their Sapporo studio to their Tokyo studio. I guess that also explains the constant use of that timelapse on the Japanese expressways in the trailer and tour videos. He explained this before performing September in full to close the main set, which he explains is from his "Sapporo days", which makes sense since it was from his band before sakanaction. Looks like the song is getting reworked for this new album, and the arrangement seems fitting as an album closer like Asa no Uta.

On a random sidenote I didn't want to buy the tour shirt but after seeing Ichiro wearing it for the encore I thought it looked cool and bought it right after the concert. HAHAHA

Kacku 21st May 2019 07:33 PM

Thanks for your report, glad to hear the concert was great! :D Love hearing about the new songs, I'm getting excited for Minority and the ambient song based on the descriptions. And nice to know what the title is about! I think it's sweet of them to refer back to their roots.

Xianghua 22nd May 2019 11:53 PM

Thank you for the detailed report! It sounds like a really creative show.

And I'm glad we got an explanation of the album title lol, if it wasn't for you Meat Pao I don't know when we would have heard about it. It's really...specific but sounds better now that we have the context. :D

Kacku 26th May 2019 08:21 AM

Whatever happened to Minority? And I'm surprised that SORATO/moon isn't on the album! But lots of new songs, I'm excited. :)

Meat Pao 26th May 2019 08:47 AM

I’m reading some of the Japanese comments and most of them seem to think Moth/Moss is the new title for Minority. They never explained why they think so though. Let’s hope that’s the case! Yeah I’m pretty bummed about SORATO not making it either :( hope it appears on a future release!

Edit: just saw one of the IG comments saying that Ichiro confirmed in a magazine interview that they changed the title for Minority. I guess it could be Moth/Moss!

Kacku 26th May 2019 12:31 PM

I figured it might have been renamed, thanks for sleuthing what the new title could be! I'm also bummed SORATO didn't make it either on this album or Sakanazukan, I'd like to have an official release and not just a YouTube rip.

Xianghua 5th June 2019 04:55 AM

That's weird since their goods have MINORITY written on it.

Meat Pao 5th June 2019 02:23 PM

Ah my bad, this was the song that had the chorus that sounds like mellow's. hahahaha

new version of Kagerou!!

i just finished listening to disc 1 and i'm loving everything so far

Kacku 24th June 2019 11:05 AM

I really like this album! Not a single bad song on it. My favorite new songs are... all the ones on disc 2. :laugh The album also got me to reevaluate some old songs, while listening through I was like "Wait, was Goodbye always this good?! Hasu no Hana had all this going on?? Kikitakatta Dance Music was this fun and funky???" so good job there!

Meat Pao 25th June 2019 06:05 AM

^ yeah! surprisingly for an album that's 50% singles from 5 years ago, they work really well together in this album. I also prefer September on the second disc compared to the first. This new version of Kagerou is EVERYTHING though!

For those who haven't seen their music station performance, great and interesting as always: https://www.facebook.com/Sakanaction...21561958350546

It's basically a reenactment of the music video. According to the show it's supposed to be "80s TV programme-themed".

Sakanaction just released a rearrange package to fan club members.
It was originally included on their very expensive LIVE FISH -COMPLETE EDITION- DVD collection.

It includes 7 songs that the members did rearrangements for during the stay home period last year from their own homes.

I was wondering if anyone was interested in a rip? Just got my copy yesterday.

The tracklist:

Shin Takarajima
Yoru no Higashi Gawa
Coelacanth to Boku
Wasurerarenaino
Mikazuki Sunset
Shironami Top Water
minnanouta (Ej_REMIX)

Kacku 2nd May 2021 03:33 PM

A new song titled "Plateau" is coming and you can hear a preview in this CM which Yamaguchi Ichiro stars in.

But no info on a release date yet.

Actually, I had this ad come on Spotify before I saw this news and was very confused about where this song came from :laugh
