Tell All (Lyrics)

I've just finished transcribing and translating the lyrics into English, but please keep in mind that there may be mistakes, or differences in the nuance of phrases. This translation is not the most elegant, but will serve its purpose for those members looking for the meaning of the words.

Quote:

English:

Whether it's the depth of the darkness you are carrying
Or the force of the wind striking your cheeks
There are undoubtedly things
That only you can understand

If you hesitate,
Nothing can begin
If you don’t start,
You will not understand the pain of loss

I’m screaming out toward the future
Saying that now is not the time to give up
In order to love you,
I chose this battle.

You go out to greet a gentle morning
You pass the night unafraid
Without any fighting spirit
I want you tell me you are happy

*Living in a state of regret,
You will never come to terms with the past
If you cannot let go of the past,
At least smile for me now

I’m screaming out toward the future
Saying that now is the time to move forward
In order to love you,
I chose this battle.

In doing this, if I can support your success
Raise your voice
And raise your head, to charge forward without looking back
There is nothing to be afraid of

*If you hesitate,
Nothing can begin
If you don’t start,
You will not understand the pain of loss

I’m screaming out toward the future
Saying that now not the time to give up
In order to love you,
I chose this battle.

Living in a state of regret,
You will never come to terms with the past
If you cannot let go of the past,
At least smile for me now

I’m screaming out toward the future
Saying that now is the time to move forward
In order to love you,
I chose this battle.

I will be the proof that you were here

(Literally, the last line says “that you were alive,” but I figured this meant essentially the same thing, and also made me think of Beyonce’s “I Was Here.”)
EDIT: Thank you for the pointer about 躊躇! :) I hadn't heard the word before, so I wasn't sure which to put in. The lyrics I've posted are still somewhat incomplete, however, as there's still some question about the "こうして" bit.
Enjoy!

That last line sent chills down my spine. Great stuff.

i do like the lyrics because they have less of the love factor to someone, even tho that "In order to love you," just makes me wanna throw my hands in the air like "I GIVE UP! I'll never get an inspiring song just full of things about LIFE and not a single word of LOVE" lol oh Ayu....

I think for Ayu, and a lot of people, love is a very big part of life. "愛のない人生なんて/そんなの生きる自身ない"? The very first line of "Love song" is essentially that life without love is meaningless. Also, as a 15th anniversary song, I think this "love" is not just about a "lover" per se, but for the love of all her friends, family, and--sure why not--fans, as well. It's more about supporting and being supported as a human being, I think, than...well, I'm not such a big fan of the whole "star-crossed lovers"/”運命の人" theme that's appeared in a number of her songs, either. But I think general "love" and support are a big part of Ayu's brand, for lack of a better word.

URANUS 7th April 2013 11:55 PM

I feel like this song is a song about how Ayu is fighting for us (her fans) through her music. There's a lot of supportive lines throughout the song. It's not necessarily about her lover or love life.

I mean, I confess that without Ayu's music throughout the years, my life wouldn't be the same. In other words, Ayu's music had given me so much entertainment and support.

I hope to read more interpretations about this song from people here.

Chibi-Chan 8th April 2013 12:03 AM

Thanks a lot for the translation! ^-^

BlackSilence 8th April 2013 12:05 AM

^^ & ^^^i want to think that way too actually, but um i just have an alergy for that word in general cuz it's so overused in the "lovers" theme that i can't just asociate it with anything else it makes the link automaticaly lol >_>

Tourian 8th April 2013 12:31 AM

This line:
"You will not understand the pain you will lose"

Doesn't it make more sense as:
"You will not understand the pain of losing"?

owlflight 8th April 2013 12:34 AM

Thanks for the translation! I love the lyrics!

That line bothered me, because you're right - it does sound awkward.
I feel like the latter would be written with "失うこと" but on the other hand, song lyrics tend to over-shorten and leave out subjects more than usual. I like the rhythm of your suggestion more, but does that make sense? "If you don't start, you will not understand the pain of loss."
What the heck, it probably makes more sense - I'll change it! :P Haha

Bad Wolf 8th April 2013 12:56 AM

There are so many different forms of love, not just romantic. There's love of the self, love for life; love for friends, for your family; love of god, love of any other power besides yourself, etc.

I think for Ayu, this song is definitely about the love between her and her fans, the relationship we've forged with her music and how she's able to connect back to us through our messages, our presence at her lives, etc. I don't doubt that it might be some commentary about her past very public relationships. It's a 'battle' to love someone whom the spotlight loves because you will inevitably be drawn into its target, too.

That aside, Ayu says she chooses to have that struggle (or whatever other struggle she can refer to) because the love she has for (insert noun here) is worth it. The fact that the cover art for this single is of her looking a little battered but also determined, with her arms cross in a self-embrace, suggests the pride the lyrics touch upon. Pride in her choosing to fight, pride in this kind of love, but also in how focused she is on moving forward.

Zeke. 8th April 2013 01:27 AM

I feel it is about the love she has for her fans and music. It's a battle to continue on as an artist in the industry, especially Japan. But, she's a fighter, and she will not give up on that love; she will not give up on her passion.

jang-kun 8th April 2013 02:32 AM

ohmygod that last line gave me epic goosebumps ♥

That is reminiscent to FFVII: Advent Children's line of Zack, "be the proof that I lived." so cool!

I do agree with you about the love thing. While I don't think this particular song is about a lover, I am totally sick of blatant love songs about boyfriends, girlfriends, breakups, etc. I like how Ayu used a more ambiguous form of love, so that it can mean something to everyone, in different situations. It brings people together.

honestly even tho ayu uses love a lot she's actually way better than the avrg pop artist in terms of making songs about "lovers" and boyfriend/girlfriend **** like. unless the lyrics talk about kissing or the PV explicitly has a couple in it, most of her songs CAN aplpy to pretty much any relationship, ppl are just so wired to think "love = romance" that it leads to these kind of complaints. i agree lately she's been more heavy-handed with romantic stuff but she's still leagues ahead of the likes of kana nishino or koda kumi's ballads or idol music or wtvr.

I don't know if this was a response to me, but I when I was talking about boyfriend/girlfriend songs, I was talking in general, not about Ayu specifically. I do normally feel as though her songs are not always explicitly about boyfriends/girlfriends, unless there is an indication of it.

Dangit, I'd already started transcribing & translating when I saw this thread. :P~ Well here's mine - different perspectives are never bad when reading translations, right?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whether it's the depth of the darkness you face
Or it's the strength of the wind on your cheek,
There are surely a great deal of things
that only you can understand.
With everything left in such a mess,
Nothing will begin.
If nothing begins,
You'll never even know the pain of losing anything.
I'm crying out to the future
"Now is not the time to give up!"
I've made the choice to fight to love you.
You welcome the gentle mornings,
And you go through terrifying nights.
I want you to tell me "I'm happy"
Without any fight on your part.
If all you feel is regret,
you can't forgive your past.
If you can't forgive your past,
Then please smile just for now.
I'm crying out to the future
"Now is the time to move forward!"
I've made the choice to fight to love you.
If I inspire you to,
Raise your loud voice
And then raise your head and start running without looking back.
There's nothing to be afraid of.
With everything left in such a mess,
Nothing will begin.
If nothing begins,
You'll never even know the pain of losing anything.
I'm crying out to the future
"Now is not the time to give up!"
I've made the choice to fight to love you.
If all you feel is regret,
you can't forgive your past.
If you can't forgive your past,
Then please smile just for now.
I'm crying out to the future
"Now is the time to move forward!"
I've made the choice to fight to love you.
I can at least try to be proof that you were alive.
yamadashun 8th April 2013 04:24 AM
now i understand why ayu's 15th anni concept is in camouflage with that fierce look on her face: "In order to love you, I chose this battle". and isn't Tell All also an idea from her "TA" abbrev? (maybe a hidden short fort for Thanks All too)
^thanks for the translation! this is really a cool song.
music_* 8th April 2013 07:20 AM
Thank you Larien for the Japanese lyrics! m(_ _)m
I can read and write Japanese, but transcribing has always been a headache. Also, I love how lyrical your translation is; if anything I think you've made it more poetic than the original Japanese lyrics with your choice of words ("wind striking your cheeks", "battle" instead of "fight", "screaming out toward the future"). Mad respect for that. :love
I do think Delirium's translation works better in certain lines though:
If I inspire you to,
Raise your voice
Telling someone to be happy and yet not have any fighting spirit seems contradictory, and the part about hoping to inspire "you" to raise your voice fits better contextually.
Also, just to point out an observation I made: Ayu seems to have made a distinction between 愛せる and 愛する (for the non-Japanese speakers, it means "to be able to love you" and "to love you" respectively). Not that it really makes a difference when translated or otherwise, seeing that the meaning of the line more or less remains the same - but it complicates trying to understand the nuance of Ayu's lyrics. :headache
I agree. When I first saw the image, I LOVED it (it reminds me a lot of the theme of the NEVER EVER cover), but I was struck by how different it is from what she has been doing. This definitely helps explain it, and makes me love the image even more!
I also like how similar the last line is to a line in the second verse of "Free & Easy"; the line that goes "the proof that you are alive exists inside of me" or something like that. I love when she makes lyrical connections like that!
The "forgiving the past" thing appears over and over and over again on her lyrics... I wouldn't be surprised if at least 1 song on every album has it.
Thanks for transcribing, Larien! I always hate doing that myself :laugh
Here's my translation for those interested:
~~~~

The depth of the darkness you carry
The force of the wind hitting your cheeks
Although there are surely many things like these
That no one but you knows

* Simply wallowing in your misery
Will lead to nothing
And if nothing starts
You won’t come to know the pain of loss

** I'm shouting to the future
"This isn’t the time to give in!"
I chose this fight
In order to be able to love you

Being able to spend peaceful mornings
Being able to spend the nights without fear
Being able to say "I’m happy" without pretense
That’s what I want for you

*** You can’t forgive the past
If you’re always living in regret
And if you can’t forgive the past
You won’t smile for me now, in the present

**** I'm shouting to the future
"Now is the time to move forward!"
I chose this fight
In order to love you

When you move up like that,
Shout out and start running,
Head held high, without turning back
If you do, there’ll be nothing left to fear

I will become the proof that you are here

Your translation for this part makes so much sense, especially the 3rd line!

This part's the tricky bit - it seems that all 3 translations in this thread has a slightly different take. Tricky phrase, this "格あげたら". Is it an idiom or expression of sorts? Or just Ayu's own choice of words?

EDIT:
I did a search and found out that 格を上げる means to raise the standard
All in all, I'm leaning towards Delirium's translation of that line.

If we could just fuse all 3 translations together, it'd be awesome :love

Really repetitive, but I like the positive spirit^^

Delirium-Zer0 10th April 2013 11:12 PM

Where the others are hearing "koushite" (meaning "thus" or "in this way") I heard "kobushita" ("encouraged/inspired") - that might explain the vast difference between translations of that line.

Minttulatte 11th April 2013 10:00 PM

I haven't heard this song yet, but I love these lyrics anyway. <3

Misa-chan 13th April 2013 06:44 PM

Hihi!!

I've been listening to the song, and here's just a few differences between what I hear and the Japanese transcript available in first post ;)

First chorus:
I think it's 躊躇してる (chuucho shiteru) instead of 醜状してる, because 醜状 is a noun which shouldn't be attached to してる yep!

All choruses:
I think she sings 愛する為 throughout all the different choruses, don't hear any 愛せる-s.. Then again, can't be 100% sure without official lyrics.

Bridge:
The much-debated phrase haha! I think it's 拳高く上げたら (kobushi takaku agetara), which is "lift your fists up high" which fits much much better with the following phrases about raising the voice and running out... ^___^

~~~
I've included my translation below too. ;)
Differences are mainly the portions where I transcribed the lyrics differently. Also, I translated the line 未来を叫んでる as "shouting out the future", since "shouting to the future" would have been written as 未来叫んでる. But because she used を, it's like she is shouting about the future. ^__^
Quote:
The depth of the darkness which you’re embracing
The strength of the wind that is grazing your cheeks
There are surely lots of things
Which nobody but you will know, but
If you are hesitant, nothing will begin
And if nothing begins, you won’t know the pain of loss
I’m shouting out the future, “it’s not the time to give up”
In order to love you, I’ve chosen this battle
You have welcomed quiet mornings
You have gone through nights without any fear
Rather than show off your fighting spirit
I want you to say that you are happy
If you feel only regret, you will never forgive the past, yeah
And if you can’t forgive the past, you won’t be able to smile at me even now
I’m shouting out the future, “now’s the time to progress”
In order to love you, I’ve chosen this battle
Lift your fists up high, yeah
And raise your voice, yeah
Then look up and start running without looking back
There’s nothing to be afraid of
If you are hesitant, yeah, nothing will begin, yeah
And if nothing begins, you won’t know the pain of loss
I’m shouting out the future, “it’s not the time to give up”
In order to love you, I’ve chosen this battle
If you feel only regret, you will never forgive the past, yeah
And if you can’t forgive the past, you won’t be able to smile at me even now
I’m shouting out the future, yeah, “now’s the time to progress”
In order to love you, I’ve chosen this battle
yeah yeah
wow wow
Things like the darkness inside you
Thank you so much Delirium-Zer0! That second ???? is something about happiness, you can hear "Shiawase" something in the verse.
Edit: NM, Ayu-Me caught it!
Nessa 16th April 2013 04:01 AM
It's too bad the breakdown isn't included, but I'm cool with that because I like that part of the song the least. *stuck up*
It is horrible. I am listening to it and then as it gets to that part I remember how awkward I find it to sound and cringe. Sometimes I want to listen to Tell All again after I've just listened to it, but I don't want to subject myself to listening to that horrid bridge.
yamadashun 16th April 2013 05:55 AM
wow thanks for the ayu version of english translation!!
it's the first time she did a translation for her own lyrics!
Delirium-Zer0 16th April 2013 06:07 AM
Here's a retranslation given Ayu's specifics! Some of her lines are missing subtexts that CAN translate into English, even though they're kinda awkward or difficult constructs. But I've done my best to include those details in this.
Also translating under the assumption that the bridge starts with "kobushi takaku agetara" as Misa has suggested, because that's totally what Ayu is saying.
----------------------------------------------
Things like the depth of the darkness within you
And things like strength of the wind against your cheek
There are so many things only you can know.
If I hesitate to clean up the mess, nothing begins.
If nothing begins, at least I'll never know the pain of losing you.
The future screams at me, "It's not time to give up now!"
I chose this fight in order to love you.
Things like you welcoming beautiful mornings
And things like you unafraid during terrifying nights.
I want you to easily tell me that you're happy.
If all we feel is regret, we can't forgive what we've done in the past.
If we can't forgive the past, then we can't smile.
The future screams at me, "It's time to push forward now!"
I chose this fight in order to love you.
If I raise my fist up,
Raise your loud voice up
And then raise your head and start running without looking back.
There's nothing to be afraid of.
If I hesitate to clean up the mess, nothing begins.
If nothing begins, at least I'll never know the pain of losing you.
The future screams at me, "It's not time to give up now!"
I chose this fight in order to love you.
If all we feel is regret, we can't forgive what we've done in the past.
If we can't forgive the past, then we can't smile.
The future screams at me, "It's time to push forward now!"
I chose this fight in order to love you.
I can try to become the reason you breathe.
So I just received my Tour goods from mu-mo and was browsing through the Tell All book.
And it seems that ayu had written the lyrics of Tell All in english! I don't understand the Japanese words in the book but I'm wondering if she was recording this song in english version too??? Here's the english version of the lyrics in the book :
Things like the darkness inside you...
Things like the wind against your cheek...
There are so many things that only you can know...
If I hesitate, nothing begins
If nothing begins, I won't know the pain of losing you
The future screams at me "it's not time to give up yet"
I chose this fight in order to love you
Things like you on a beautiful morning...
Things like you, unafraid at night...
I want you to tell me that you're happy...
If we regret, we can't forgive what we've done
If we can't forgive, we can't smile
The future screams at me "it's time to press forward"
I chose this fight in order to love you
I'm gonna become the reason you breathe
(and it's noted "To Ryan <3"???)
(just saw the previous page lol...)
But anyway... it's quite rare for her to write english version lyrics. Not sure if she'll be trying to enter the international market soon ^^
Thanks so much for this!
I would like Ayu doing this kind of thing more often, it just shows her exact point of view to us poor international fans. Thanks again!
Is it more correct to say "In order to love you, I chose this battle" or "I chose this battle in order to love you"? I think they're a little different
Delirium-Zer0 17th June 2013 03:44 PM
They're a little different but honestly her phrasing is a bit unclear about which it is. The only thing we can glean from it is that she's decided to engage in a battle with the ultimate goal of loving the person/people she's addressing. It's not clear if the choice to fight is how she gets to loving the addressee, or if winning the battle is required for that.
The lyrics to this are really beautiful. I personally like the op's translation of the last line better than Ayu's official translation. "I will be the proof that you were here" sounds more beautiful than "I'm gonna become the reason you breathe". But that's just my opinion.
Thank you everyone for the translations!
It's awkward to say this, since I wrote the translation in the first post--which is definitely flawed--but I agree. xD;; I think it's the "gonna" when written, but I also find it confusing that she wrote "reason you breathe," since that's not really what 生きる証(ikiru akashi) means: though "to breathe" can be a slightly metaphorical iteration of the idea, "to live," 証/akashi translates in every dictionary I've consulted, to "proof" or "testimony," and especially that which proves someone's innocence/vindicates them.
So while the differences may not be enormous, I think they make a big difference in the ultimate effect of the line, the penultimate lyric in the song.
To become the reason someone breathes, in my mind, is to be madly devoted and in love with someone (e.g. "I love you, Gertrude; you're the reason I breathe!" xPP). You exist only to love and attend to them, or at least that's the impression given by saying such a thing. Personally, I've never heard the object of love/devotion demand it in quite this way from someone else. ^^;
Maybe I'm being stubborn, but even in this configuration of words, though somewhat baffling to me, I'm going to go ahead and interpret them in the spirit of the rest of the song, or at least the impression I've gotten from it. Heavily dumbed down: "Though there are many hardships, I won't give up, I'll keep moving forward. You, too--don't give up. I support you, I love you, and we'll fight together."
Agreed. At least least for main album tracks / singles. Would have been awesome.
Wanted to bump this in case someone wanted it like I did, as it's on the new album.
Also, thanks to the translator.
