A very smart move to add the music cards while they still count them.

I'm pretty sure it's the FC version, which sold that much, not the music cards. Cause it was like that for her last album as well and it didn't have any music cards.

And I do think it's good, that she still has such a pretty large fanbase to get 30k+, as she most probably doesn't have much casual listeners left., who buy the album physically.

Btw. full first week sales are 39,346.

kaled kalil 24th March 2015 05:06 PM

@chocopockymaster I was actually really happy to get the DMP concert with the Dejavu album. It was one of the reasons for me to get the album on pre-order. Nowadays I'm not really into that anymore, since we haven't got any full concert for regular releases anyway, and I'm not in the mood to pay extra just to get the fan club version. I miss those days where we could get everything from the album with the CD+2DVDs version :( (the second DVD of JAPONESQUE was shitty tho). Right now I'm waiting for the HK/TW version of the album, the economy in Brazil + my own economy is not at the best moment, so I'm wait a little longer to get the album.

I'm happy with the sales, she is getting a solid number. Her next album will probably sells around 40K as well.

pimenta 24th March 2015 05:41 PM

I love having DMP on Dejavu. I don't usually buy Kuu's DVDs (I give priority to CDs, even though I love her concerts), but I do buy her albums, so if the album happens to come with a concert, like Dejavu, TRICK or Second Session, I think it's great :D

Gustavopc 24th March 2015 05:42 PM

I'm happy her fanbase stood up for this release, without a cute or rockish summer track and a winter karaoke ballad to sustain it, it could have gone wrong. I guess saving it up for her 15th was a good strategy :)

What makes me afraid is how much a BEST coming now would sell. I wouldn't like it, but I can kinda feel one coming this year... first things came out in 2005, third universe in 2010, so it would make sense to have her fourth compilation this year. The biggest hits would be the oldest tracks tho :/ If she decides for a BEST, I hope it's a proper 2CD set, like third universe should have been... Or maybe a two-disc set with singles from 2010~2015 in one disc and an b-sides from since her debut on the other. A BEST with re-recordings would also be a good idea :)

Welurru 24th March 2015 05:49 PM

A BEST ~KuuMPLETE~ is the only way to go. All singles with a PV (bye 'girls') spread over however many CD's as standard. Next edition with a 2 disc B-side collection, then CDs + DVD/ Blu Ray version with all PVs. ALL PV's.
Announce it now for a winter release so we can all put in the overtime to afford such a collection ... or no Best this year.

Miichan 24th March 2015 05:55 PM

I'm a bit surprised they haven't released a single collection like "A Complete", Kumi has a huge amount of singles and several hits. I'd love to hear some of her older tracks re-recorded.

But her sales didn't drop that fast last year, she went from 25,000 to 12,000, this year she went from 30,000 to 3,000 in one day.
I don't doubt the power of the FC edition but music cards always add a massive boost, which is exactly why they won't count them anymore.

I think the general public simply didn't know this album was being released, she wasn't on TV or on magazines, she had some trucks and billboards around Tokyo but outside that area I haven't seen too much.
Future tours and events will probably help this album reach sales similar to Bon Voyage's in the long run.

pimenta 24th March 2015 05:57 PM

I still want her to release a b-sides best (including the a-sides she left out of albums).

If you look at the soundscan numbers from Bon Voyage last year, the difference of the (normal) DVD edition is pretty much exactly the 7k difference in first week sales between Bon Voyage and now WALK OF MY LIFE.
Also there isn't even the full album on the music card editions, just a part. I highly doubt music cards are making a big amount of the sold editions. And both FC and music cards aren't counted with soundscan, but they do with Oricon (or did like with the music cards soon).
And you just said it - it is pretty clear it's her own fanbase she's relying on.

Delicious n Bold 24th March 2015 06:47 PM

I posed in another thread that I kinda regret buying the album because it was so much and I could have bought other things. But listening to dance in the rain makes it worth it tbh.

kaled kalil 24th March 2015 07:31 PM

One thing that I like from Kumi's compilations is the name. I like how there is consistency (first things, second session, third universe), it reminds me of Seiko Matsuda's serie "Bible". I hope for a BEST ~fourth dimension~ by the end of this year, and it will probably be a single compilation, with some b-sides (like girls and Lady Go!). I actually thought that they would sell the First Class 2nd LIMITED LIVE with the new A KUUMPLETE. haha

Also, a PV COLLECTION / Live Collection would be awesome as well.

Miichan 24th March 2015 07:46 PM

Having a lacking tracklist won't stop people from buying them, the music card numbers can still be high since it's half the price of the CD and much cheaper than buying the full album digitally.
Daesung's "Delight" album sold under 10,000 copies with the CDs alone, but with music cards it sold over 68,000 copies, and apparently those only had 3 tracks.
I'm not trying to say all her sales came from music cards, but they definitely are a great booster, like a kick of caffeine.

I wonder if they aren't putting all her promotion effort into this album because they have something else planned for this year? I'd like to see something big from her again.

oaristos 24th March 2015 11:19 PM

I really think she shouldn't release another compilation album. We don't need it, she doesn't need it either and it ain't gonna sell anything in the end.

Minttulatte 25th March 2015 01:18 AM

I can feel another compilation album coming up, too.

happiholic★ 25th March 2015 02:16 AM

If there is a compilation, I think there is a chance that it will be a better release than Third Universe. That was just useless. First Things, start of her popularity. Second Session, more accurately an original album. Third Universe was just for the sake of releasing a best with the album. No bonuses or anything. If there is a best, its not coupled with the album so I have higher hopes that maybe its a complete or resung.

Delicious n Bold 25th March 2015 03:12 AM

Kumi better release escalate and kosokoso on the best album if she releases one.

sora-kara 25th March 2015 04:20 AM

time-wise, it does feel like they'd push a best...but as far as career and material goes, it would have to be something more interesting like bounce&lovers, or a b-side compilation, or resung/reworked/orchestra/acoustic/something!!! kind of compilation.

i can't think of a tracklist that makes sense for right now though...her classics are all over her discography, and her newer material doesn't feel right for these kinds of things...
oh..im just talking out of my ass here. i know nothing, and dont think we need a compilation album anytime soon.

lastminute 25th March 2015 04:48 AM

I agree, a compilation is very likely, but it isn't necessary and would probably not sell well.

Kouyou 25th March 2015 07:17 AM

I'm not completely opposed to a new compilation album this year, but it would have to be something special. I don't want, just, like, "BEST ALBUM FOUR TIME" or some bullshit like that. A b-side compilation might be cool. I would prefer a new cover album over anything else, though. Color The Cover is LIFE.

tokyoxjapanxfan 25th March 2015 09:53 AM

I think she needs a b-side compilation. She could legit do a tour with just b-sides lol.

Minttulatte 25th March 2015 01:26 PM

Hell, she should release another ballads best, b-side best and a single collection with all having 5 new songs in them. :D

As for WALK OF MY LIFE, it gets better with every listen. I'm just finishing with my 7th listen and it sounds even more awesome than on the first time♥ I'm not even bothered with the fact that there is only one ballad on this album, but I hope her next one will have more because Kuu's ballads are the best out there to me~

I agree with Best Ballad. i want her to produce PVs for album songs such as Come Back, No way etc. like Namie did for Ballada, please .

I really like the lightstick! These colors mean probably she'll split song in sections similarly to FANTASIA, interesting :) T-shirt is not as beautiful as I was expecting... Maybe I'll get the hoodie instead

That weekender bag is a straight up copy of the Kate Spade Saturday weekender bags, right down to the zipper pouch on the bottom for your shoes or whatever. :shakehead

The lightstick is really cool too.

NintendoHTF1242 25th March 2015 06:24 PM

If Kuu does something big in regards to a compilation, why not do a best of all worlds release?

Make it like 4 CDs: A-Side collection, B-Side selection, Ballad selection, Remix

Granted it's gonna cost like $125 + our left kidney but it sounds like a great release.

BEST ~fourth dimension~ someone mentioned as a name, that would be amazing tbh lol

Delicious n Bold 25th March 2015 06:35 PM

She really needs to try and do another 12 singles in 12 weeks project or at least 6 singles in 6 weeks. second session did so well, and she mentioned in the interview before she's interested in doing another project like that. But here we are almost 10 years later and still nothing. Disappointment.

I totally missed the whole 12 Days of Christmas single project because I wasn't a fan back then yet so another project like that would be awesome❤️

sora-kara 26th March 2015 06:29 AM

oooh, nice goods!
i really like the bag and the key(chain).

i've just listened to the album for the first time. it went by so quickly! it was over and i was like "woah....that just FLEW BY!!"
but really, i like it. there are some great tracks (Lippy stands out to me at the moment), and yes, the overall flow is solid. it doesnt feel like a kuu album in a lot of ways, but she makes it her own with her voice alone.
there's still enough variation on the theme to make it interesting. and its just catchy as all hell from beginning to end! its quite unique to her discography, and im really grateful for that. this is just another step in the walk of her life, so im really curious to see if she will follow along the path that she started walking down with this album, and venture on through amazing and wonderful things.

to me, this album feels like a reminder that an artist is never complete. they're always experimenting, and trying to create something new and fulfilling in different ways. this album is not 'the final product' of the koda kumi project as a whole. it is not the be all, end all of her persona. just a moment of playfulness, joy, introspection and creation.
she may never have a definitive release as an artist, but her discography as a whole creates the complete picture of the project of koda kumi.

Aww what happened to the signature D':

I was listening to it at 320kpbs (VBR) lol that's what I ripped all my CDs at. I should probably try FLAC, just for Driving though. I wanna feel the euphoria that Zeke. feels from it. So yeah I suggest FLAC if the chorus still sounds a little "messy" to you.

Gustavopc 26th March 2015 01:08 PM

I think the 12 singles did well back then cause her popularity was rising, nowadays simply putting out lots of singles in few weeks would be a disaster imo. If she wants to do something like that again (emphasis on IF), she should get lots if tie ins and rework her image all over... Plus, another singles project would surely lead up to a BEST lol

Lol glad someone took note when I poured my fucking heart out into expressing my passion for that song.

Chorus may sound messy due to various layers that play in unison at that point so high quality is definitely a must. My favorite layer is the gritty one. You can hear it best during the outro of the song. It's like the deepest bassline that guides the structure of the entire song. It is easy to allow the higher pitched synthesized layer to steal your attention, and I actually have to make an effort to pick out the gritty bassline layer during the chorus, but that's the real star of the song. I always try to figure out what exactly it is about a song that stirs such a strong reaction in me, and the moment I discovered it was that bassline, everything fell into place.

Listen to the outro of the song to know what I'm talking about and then actively listen and seek out that layer during the chorus of the song. (At least I think that's the bassline... Or like the deepest part of the chord progression?)

Also, I begin to foam at the mouth at 24 seconds when they use that affect of snatching and dragging the beat to slam it down and kick off the first verse. As the song progresses my pupils begin to dilate further and further and by the time that breakdown kicks in I am on the floor convulsing. So powerful it can induce a seizure.

Yes, a project like that would just damage even more her image, people would be thinking "didn't she released a single just yesterday?". If it was well produced, with REALLY good tie-ins, and it was some sort of a reinvention for her image, it could work (but with less than 12 singles in a row, something like 6 limited singles would be better). I actually thought that this was a good idea for her to do after giving birth, because it was a "new beginning" for her career.

And well, Ayu did a project with a five releases together each month, but it was different things, like mini-album / classical album / DVD, and I think she did pretty well.

I don't think this would be the reaction at all. If anything I think public (excluding her fanbase) would say "Oh she still makes music?", "I haven't heard anything from her in 3 years, etc". She really needs a grand project like that or a best album of some sort to get her back somewhat into the public eye imo.

oaristos 26th March 2015 05:19 PM

I don't think that'd be a good idea. I mean, Ayu tried something like that for ther 15th anniversary and it didn't turn out well in the end. In terms os quality, promotion, etc. :(

Gustavopc 26th March 2015 05:29 PM

ayu was a bit of trouble cause first there were two maxi singles tagged as EPs so they say she had a #1 album that year, as Party Queen and A SUMMER BEST failed to get #1 on Oricon (sorry if I'm ofending anyone, but that's the only reason I can think of why they were not singles). A CLASSICAL was a win, but then she had LOVE again which let many fans down (not me tho). And she ended the releases with... the CDL. It started well, but it was a mess on the long run.

I don't think Kuu needs to make this "x releases per y amount of time" anymore. Her 10th anniversary had lots of good stuff well spaced and not rushed: New album in February, remix album in March, summer single, cover album and a ballad single as well. Not to mention UNIVERSE Tour DVD, BRAZIL and iirc there was that special DVD of live perfomances. I hope she keeps this strategy for her 15th anniv, it was not a buzz booster, but everything she did felt fine for me.

I also think it wouldn't change anything..maybe even decrease her popularity.
AAA is doing something like this atm (7 singles in 7 month) - I'm actually a sucker for such things - yet i know I'll get an album at the end with all songs on it so I don't even bother to listen to the singles lol. (I just like the idea and the fact, that the covers add to a complete picture)

Exactly. Plus, they decided to release everything on the 8th day of each month, which was a terrible idea, and because of that "again" only charted for four days during its first week. Even "LOVE again", that debuted at #1, charted for only four days as well. That's why everything sold so poorly (not that they were going to sell one million copies anyway).

THIS. I absolutely loved the way she decided to celebrate her 10th anniversary! That year was full of good releases and they were pretty spaced. I think that's way better than releasing another BEST full of things that people don't want to/are not going to buy. She wasted her last hits on BEST~third universe~. Even Ayu needed Mirrorcle World to make A COMPLETE a success. I don't see a big hit coming for Kumi at this point :no

I personally wouldn't say it did well. The LOVE/again → LOVE again and Maro fiasco surrounding it actually hurt her fan base quite a bit, I think. The fact that LOVE, a mini album/single, outsold LOVE again, a full album just three months later, says a lot about how her fans felt toward it tbh.

ayumisrael 27th March 2015 10:49 AM

Now that I actually gave the album some listens and let it sink in I actually quite like it.
At first I think that the style was kind of a shock to me, both because of the style and also because I thought that the new songs will mostly be like the up beat/sexy songs like we got from kuu in the past or like MONEY IN MY BAG but they turned out to be different.
The good thing in most songs is that they are really catchy so almost each day a different song caught me.

My favorites from the new songs are Like It, Lippy, House Party, PIECE IN THE PUZZLE, Gimme U and Merecedes.
Fake Tongue is nice but the weak ones are Can You Keep Up With Me (which has annoying parts but nice at times) and LIFE is GOOD!! which I did like its beginning annoying voice but it's also catchy so it's so so lol.

I already liked the singles songs and WALK OF MY LIFE (MONEY IN MY BAG wins).

Still waitiing for the 2nd FIRST CLASS live to be uploaded...

I watched FCLL yesterday. I liked the concept for the show, it's too bad that she had a cold.

I was seriously so, SO distracted by the earring-necklace she wore during the 1st stage. GURL. ARE YOU TRYING TO RIP YOUR EARLOBES? I had images of her nails or her bracelets getting stuck on her necklace and pulling it, thereby ripping her earrings out. :tired Please, for the love of god, stick to clip-ons if you're going to wear earrings that heavy!!!

Also if anyone could ID the boots she wears for the 2nd stage, I would be so grateful :luv2 They're fab.

On the whole, the concert reminded me of how many pointless ballads she's released as singles, lol. Ai wo tomenaide? Koishikute? lol bye. She should've performed Unmei and Anata dake ga. I didn't understand her criteria for picking songs for the show. She did LAx5 and IS THIS TRAP? which were both off Summer Trip, but not all the songs off 4 Times, for example. So it felt a little incomplete to me and she didn't sing some of the songs I was looking forward to the most, which was a bummer. :/

edit: And my comment in the previous thread regarding my bitterness about Dream Music Park's release stands, lol. That concert was fabulous and now we'll never see it on bluray, which ticks me off. I still have such fond memories of that concert. :'(

This is actually a very common reaction now "oh I remember her cutie honey cover" "she sang a song for final fantasy too right?" "I used to sing her songs in karaoke 6 years ago"
The general public doesn't remember much about her, other than her "vulgar" image and a few songs.

I think a massive 12 singles project or something similar would bring up questions like "is she that desperate now?" "didn't she do this before?"

Ai wo tomonaide and Koishikute are pretty good ballads. She chose the main a-side of each singles + one song more of some 4 a-side singles. I think the latter was due to the time she had for each stage.

In all seriousness Ive come to appreciate some of her old ballads but I'd be ok if she never released another generic ballad. We have ayu for that (not that I don't like her cheezy ballads). Songs like WOML are great. But if she waited to release another cheezy ballad then it's effect will be much stronger. It won't seem as formulaic.

KuuXAyu-fan 27th March 2015 10:27 PM

Well you guys may not like her ballads but they always went well with the Japanese public. All of her ballad singles in the past 10 years have been certified by the RIAJ digitally for at least 100,000+ copies sold digitally. (with the exception of Alive)

oaristos 27th March 2015 10:43 PM

Yes, her ballads may have been successful throughout the years but I don't think she cares about it anymore, which ended up with the release of an exceptional studio album, free of what used to bring her commercial success in the past. It took her fifteen years to find her own path and I'm glad she finally did!

thinkingoutloud89 27th March 2015 11:13 PM

Its funny how peopel still demand singles but don't want ballads. Just decides folks. If there wouldn't be singles, you would get a wides pectrum of songs too choose from - if you sill wnat singles, you also have to live with the genres you don't like that much. I want another hands, you, AUnmei, Aisho, Sukie de, Anata dake ga or Koishikute anytime.

edit: and really, people are starting to make a connetcion between the finally free line and her not realeasing a a ballad single? I don't think this albums strays to far from her usual sound, its just more westernized.

Praise the all mighty lord that this album doesn't have a generic ~snow falling or rain downpour/dead boyfriend/cellphone/yearning/crying/emotional breakdown~ ballad.

I know it's been two years since Koishikute, but she has so many similar ballads it doesn't feel like it's been that much since the last one lol i like its PV though, the orchestra scenes looks stunning.

Less of Koishikute and more of Imagine please!!

THIS.
It's not that her ballads are bad or anything, it is just that ballads like Koishikute or Ai No Uta are good and epic at the beginning but get really boring over time, at least to me they do. I can't listen to Bon Voyage without skipping Koishikute (It got boring and it doesn't even fit in the album imo).

I couldn't live with her not releasing any ballads but I certainly could live with her not releasing ballads like koishikute, though.

Im livid. Those are the pics I wanted in the album photobook! Friggen Slavex.

Could you possibly scan the pamphlet in HQ?

Lee^ChaN 28th March 2015 07:00 AM

^ I'm sorry, but I don't have a scanner :(
And it's so freaking huge. 14 papers of A1 size, folded into A2 size.
I hope someone with scanner can help us with HQ pics.
