Otsuka Ai (大塚愛) is a popular Japanese pop singer on the avex trax label. She first appeared in September 2003 with the single "Momo no Hanabira", but it wasn't until her second single "Sakuranbo" that her talent was noticed.

A piano player since age 4, Otsuka composes and co-produces her songs. She also writes her own lyrics. Her music ranges from upbeat catchy pop/rock music that can be heard in tracks like "Happy Days" and "Sakuranbo" to touching ballads like "Daisuki da yo." and "Planetarium".
Otsuka Ai promoting LOVE JAM (2004)
Otsuka's debut album LOVE PUNCH was released in March 2004 and was a huge success, earning Otsuka nicknames such as "The New Guru of Love". Her second single called "Sakuranbo" stayed on the Oricon charts for 85 weeks. Surprisingly, Otsuka's second album, LOVE JAM, was released only 8 months after her first in November 2004. It debuted at #1.

In other works, Otsuka has acted in the Tokyo Friends drama. She also has a radio show called "Otsuka Ai ai-r Jack" and has appeared in various CMs. Furthermore, Otsuka pens column in two Japanese magazines; "Love Column" in Zipper and "Love World ~ Eye Love Pictures" in B-Pass. "Kimi Iro Omoi", Otsuka's first photobook, was released on March 1st, 2005.

A talented graphic artist as well, the first pressings of her albums and some singles have included a limited edition picture book illustrated by Otsuka herself. Many of her illustrations can be seen at the Gallery section of her official website.

JAM PUNCH Tour 2005, her first tour began on April 24, 2005. It completed in June 2005 and a Live DVD with footage will be released on July 27, 2005. LOVE COOK, her 3rd album was released on December 14, 2005.

Otsuka Ai performed at Makuhari Messe on July 7th, 2007, for one of Japan's two Live Earth concerts, alongside contemporaries Koda Kumi and ayaka.

On June 25th, 2010, it was announced on her official site that she got married to SU of the band RIP SLYME. They had previously collaborated on the song "aisu×time" on her LOVE is BEST album. On March 24, 2011, Otsuka gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

She came back in 2012 while announcing a [LOVE IS BORN] ~9th Anniversary 2012~ concert in September. Then she announced on her official website she is involved in a new musical project, a new band which name is Rabbit. Their debut album Rabito was released December 12, 2012.

Yay! Thank you Maemi for new thread

koumori 22nd April 2015 05:09 PM

Thanks for the new thread :)

I've been listening to the album almost non-stop since yesterday evening... it's just so upbeat and danceable. Most of the songs have that hook to keep it in your head as well which means I woke up humming most of the tracklist :laugh I really hope by some miracle that the album gets noticed and does well, because it really is something different for Ai and has much more of a 'current' sound than LOVE FANTASTIC.

There were some comments in the previous thread about the songs having a lack of depth; I can definitely see where those comments are coming from, but I didn't really expect that from an Ai Otsuka album and I'm enjoying the songs for what they are. Everyone is entitled to look for what they want in an album but deep compositions or not, these songs are catchy and fun! Perfect for summer.

It's also filling the hole in my heart that MAA left when she became inactive. :weep

Maemi 22nd April 2015 05:12 PM

No problem guys :)

I like the new album too, and I think it is more catchy & upbeat than the previous one. Someone compared it to Ami Suzuki's works. I can see where that is coming from and I agree that it lacks the depth (nothing will beat Love Cook and Love Piece imo), however, it is a nice album to listen to while chilling and relaxing :)

terra 22nd April 2015 05:47 PM

^Indeed, imo it's not always has to be depth and all but as long as it's fun for your ear.
I've been on repeat play today, I was putting high volumes of laugh, affair and i'm lonely while driving home, and danced the laugh's breakdown. It just feels soooo good

chocopockymaster 22nd April 2015 05:58 PM

This album is all that's getting me through the shitstorm that is my life right now

Delicious n Bold 22nd April 2015 05:59 PM

Same
I have an exam today and I think I'm gonna flop so I'm dancing with tears in my eyes like Ai.

midorinousagi 22nd April 2015 06:02 PM

Pls guys if anyone have album Love fantastic can you post photos from the booklet?

Ruan Borges 22nd April 2015 07:00 PM

I downloaded the Love Tricky after all the AHS hype and WOOOOOOOW it's freaking awesome, I have no words on how good it is =O

terra 22nd April 2015 07:02 PM

^Glad you like it ;) welcome to the bandwagon

I hope translations for the lyrics will be available soon xD I'm too stupid to translate it myself

I second this!

NintendoHTF1242 22nd April 2015 07:10 PM

Lol the two songs that didn't hit gold right away (Parallel World and busy lady) finally grew onto me. busy lady has been stuck in my head all day. The tracks I always find myself going for straight away are "laugh," "shooting star," and "end and and." "affair" is slowly sneaking it's way up too, though. LOVE the instrumentation in that song. Well, love the instrumentation in all the songs, lol.

You guys think she might deliver another AIO PUNCH maybe? I wouldn't mind hearing STUDIO APARTMENT working with the likes of Kingyo Hanabi and Plaenterium.

haraiso 22nd April 2015 07:12 PM

The album debuted at #14 on Oricon Daily. Not too bad! Hopefully she gets more sales once people start spreading the word of how godly this album is :banana2

Delicious n Bold 22nd April 2015 07:14 PM

YAAASS sleigh queen etc!!
I'm shocked actually. I thought it was gonna flop into utter oblivion.

thinkingoutloud89 22nd April 2015 07:25 PM

^well she still ahs a big name, but oricon #14 only looks okay in numbers. The sales are probably really bad in this position...probably betwenn 1000-3000

Yeah, what happened to the Ai Otsuka fans? Lost interest? May have fallen into the steps of Angela Aki, who had #1 releases for quite some time, and then downhill in the Oricon... :(

Chiharo 22nd April 2015 07:52 PM

Is the album really THAT great? I don't want to have too high expectations when I listen to it because I fear I'll be let down. But all these comments make me a bit too excited to listen to it.

haraiso 22nd April 2015 08:42 PM

I forgot who asked for it in the last thread, but I uploaded an Apple Lossless version for anyone that wants it.

I think you should just go in listening to the album with an open mind. It's completely different to anything she's done before, so it may be pretty shocking if you're only used to her singing ballads or quirky songs. In fact, there's not a single ballad on this album.

It's not some deep thoughtful masterpiece, but it's the perfect album if you want to get up and dance (with the occasional cocktail break lol). It's upbeat and fun from start to finish.

NintendoHTF1242 22nd April 2015 08:46 PM

Oh actually Chiharo asked for the Loseless! I was going to upload it later today because last night I was busy but you did the job, thank you!

EDIT: a cocktail break is the best way to describe this album lol

Yeah, I was the one who asked for lossless, so thank you! The description you wrote sounds like it really might be something I'll like, too. But anyway, with the lossless available, I'm off to listen to it! Will comment on it when I'm done.

@NintendoHTF1242

I still thank you for wanting to rip the album for me again even if someone else did it instead. :)

love in music 22nd April 2015 10:12 PM

I haven't posted in this thread in a while.. but I'm a longtime ai fan (9 years). I'm really shocked by this new album in a good way. It's not a typical ai album at all and I'm so glad she's changing things up :D My favorites are definitely I'm lonely, affair, and Laugh. They're so catchy :luv2 I just wish there were more songs, lol.

chocopockymaster 22nd April 2015 10:57 PM

This album just makes me want to go out somewhere fabulous and drink fabulous cocktails

I really like the album. Nothing too groundbreaking but it is an easy listen and I've had it on repeat all day. I'm lonely is my jam. I hope Namie slays even harder than this!

Thanks :)
Shooting star all the way...btw i saw shooting star few days ago maybe its an Ai song coming to Earth :P

Ashen Twilight 23rd April 2015 04:58 AM

Love the album. It's like a combination of her LOVE material and her album, LOVE PiECE, combined, so in other words amazing. It still feels like an Ai album to me except its more like a new chapter. Most of her other albums have pretty must just been an addendum with small tweaks. I've been listening to this album all day and can't get enough. I enjoy every song. I think my favorites look like this though:

1) laugh
2) shooting star
3) end and and ~10,000 hearts~
4) affair

However, I think my favorite part from this album are the verses in I'm lonely. Sexy.

terra 23rd April 2015 05:35 AM

My top 3 of the album
1. laugh
2. affair
3. I'm lonely

Those song is my current driving jam right now

~kashifaita~ 23rd April 2015 05:57 AM

The more I listen to this album, the more I realize what some of you are saying about the song structures/lyrics being bland lol. I didn't realize how much end and and repeated it's verses until I actually looked at the lyrics. Nevertheless, all the instrumentals are fantastic!

and affair is my new twerk anthem. gOD that song.

AmyRoseM 23rd April 2015 07:43 AM

She's back and this is so good and I don't even know what to do with myself. o.O

^Yes we do! Just a different in priority. Those 3 are sure the jam of the album for us XD

Parallel World, summer lovely days, and end and and are probably my favorites from this album. With shooting star and laugh behind them. The first three just make me pretty happy. Awesome moods they give.

The rest of the album is good in that way too.

Zeke. 23rd April 2015 10:05 AM

Lol, it's funny cause parallel world and summer lovely days are my least favorites, along with affair. The melodies for parallel world and summer lovely days are what just drives me. They don't really sound like melodies, it's more of like a "tune" or "jingle" - the melody for summer lovely reminds me of something a child would sing. Like making up a song about nonsense such as sitting on the toilet or washing their toes.

thinkingoutloud89 23rd April 2015 12:34 PM

^ nothing bad about it. Ai was always known for easy-listening music and I want to remind you that this album is produced by STUDIO APARTMENT, who are still electronic music producer - so the lack of some melodies should not surprise you.
I just don't get why you listen to it when you don't like...
I like it pretty much, but I'm also not as excited as everybody else...still i don't want to leave a bad taste in ther mouth. How about you wait 2 wekks and then give your proper review when everyone else is over the first excitement to.

nanomi 23rd April 2015 01:05 PM

Bought the album on iTunes last night, after seeing all this hype and liking the preview YouTube video. It's really fun to listen to and I enjoy how repetitive it is...lol I like listening to this type of stuff while I am working, so for me this is ideal!
I'm really satisfied with Ai overall now, because while I enjoy her first 3 albums the most, she has changed and this is something new, so I like this change.

...Now back to working and crying over having spent so much money on Ayu, Kuu, and Ai in the past 2 weeks. And now Namie is next...Too much epic can't handle it.

But to me that is what is so great about them. That's how I knew Parallel world would be one of my favorites from the previews. The simplicity of the composition is just so nice, simple, and pretty. The arrangements are not too simple but simple enough to compliment the compositions while creating an easy-listening chill mood as well.

The songs parallel world and summer lovely days don't really seem like they progress much either, along with being simple melodically. They also are very repititive. But that's what I enjoy in this context. It's very minimalistic in a way. And I can get lost in that and propbably repeat the songs without even seeing where the beginning is lol. I don't have to go through a long narrative of a song, I have others for that. No buildup of a story. Nothing complex. I can project what I want on it and just chill and be lost.

It's to articulate how I feel about those two songs but they do give me life.

Are you seriously saying this when she has a song called Ramen 3-Minute Cooking, which is pretty much exactly what you described and yet couldn't be more different from summer lovely days or Parallel World?

Haha, ok that is THE worst. That song is more like melody of a toddler who just conquered potty training. Melody for summer lovely/parallel world is more like toddler is now heading into their first day of school. For summer lovely days I imagine "Here I sit talking my new classmates, suddenly I need to take a bathroom break. Teacher says I'm gonna have to sit and wait - it's lunch time soon; I hope they serve some cake."

As far as simplicity is concerned - I actually love simplicity, but there's just something about those melodies. (I've also read that apparently whoever worked with her also worked on Ami's Bitter... which I loved back when it was released). I think maybe it's a mix of the rhythm and awkward choice in chord progression underneath the melodies (it's like your just bouncing back and forth, being kept in limbo rather than experiencing a nice give and take in the rising and releasing of tension/anticipation).

It's cool that everyone else is getting into it. I just tried to give it another chance to verify if my first impressions were perhaps deceiving. But the songs I originally gave no stars to definitely are still throwaways for me (summer lovely days, affair, Parallel World).

busy lady is still by far the best track. It's the most catchy (especially those, "ah ah ah aaah, ah ah ahh's") and enjoyable piece to listen to out of the bunch. I think it's the one which is most true to Ai form as well (different without being too different). That's what I'd describe as "easy-listening / chill."

I suppose I would rather hear more material in the vein of Rabbit's "RUNWAY" and "泡ガール," which for me was the best form of an evolution for Ai. It was a clearly updated sound which was still able to evoke the "Ai Otsuka" feeling (not all the Rabbit tracks, but those two in particular, and perhaps even "HoloHolo" as well). Additionally, those tracks are some of the catchiest material in her discography, imo.

This is off topic but Zeke., what do you think of Bjork's music?

NintendoHTF1242 24th April 2015 11:42 AM

The ending instrumental of busy lady reminds me of Mario Kart music lol

I haven't listened to her a lot but I know one time I referenced some song she had where she had like Ronald McDonald hair in the PV. The song was like supposed to be offbeat and "avant garde" and I thought it was terrible. Some member on AHS got into this whole backstory about the concept of it and I'm just like "I don't give a fuck if it's 'supposed' to sound shit, at the end of the day, it still sounds like shit."

I don't get this attitude that music has to be avant garde and edgy to be good or artistic lol

Ruan Borges 26th April 2015 03:15 AM

I'm completely addicted to this album, there is not even a single song that I skip!

you got it wrong.. I love bladn pop tunes but i don't see the point in not evolving - and evolution normaly needs to break with "at the time"-standards

tsumekaze_ 26th April 2015 03:50 PM

I love this album to bits except for summer lovely days and BUSY LADY. I hate the latter especially. The rest is party jam

Honey_Jae 26th April 2015 07:22 PM

I really like this Album. A few years ago I didn't like her that much but with this Album I want to listen more :)

Corvina 26th April 2015 11:02 PM

The album is really nice, especially laugh and affair.
Very cohesive. It's even so cohesive, sometimes it's hard to tell, when one songs ends and another one starts. :laugh

NintendoHTF1242 27th April 2015 12:23 AM

^ You think so? I feel like every song has it's own distinct flavor that you can instantly tell when the song is over lol.

terra 27th April 2015 05:46 AM

I could tell the difference between songs but sometimes the bass beat or base beat(?) share similarities in my ear. I kinda remember hearing a part of bass beat in laugh that also could be heard in end and and, but that's it.

chocopockymaster 27th April 2015 04:34 PM

One of the things I love most about the album is its consistency, and how well it flows. I still can't get enough of it! (Though now I'm taking regularly scheduled breaks so I don't get sick of it, lol)

Solarblade 27th April 2015 05:01 PM

Maybe it's just me but I've never felt Ai has ever stuck to one genre on any album of hers, which might be why some people are offput by it (at least to what I think, I wouldn't know fully)

terra 27th April 2015 06:07 PM

^She has several genres in each release I think at least 3 imo, I don't really check, that's just my hunch.

Yeah, maybe because LOVE TRiCKY is so cohesive and focus on one genre, some people are surprised by this. But that's how it felt awesome for me because despite sounding similar at a glance, each song is different from each other.

Tom Punks 27th April 2015 06:10 PM

^ The only people who dislike the album have specifically stated why already. It's not the genre, it's the compositions.

Delicious n Bold 27th April 2015 06:15 PM

You know I have to agree that some compositions are basic but I'm not expecting weird bjork-like compositions for the songs. Sometimes basic is a lot of fun. I think that, in the end, as long as you have fun and you enjoy yourself, the music has done its job.

terra 27th April 2015 06:54 PM

^Indeed, the album has perfectly served its job on giving me a fun listening session. That's what matters in the end.

NintendoHTF1242 29th April 2015 09:07 PM

Still love this album to death. laugh and end end and are my drugs.

chocopockymaster 29th April 2015 09:17 PM

^ mine too :heart end and and is fab

HilaryDuffFanboy 29th April 2015 11:50 PM

As a long time Otsuka Ai fan who lost interest in jpop a few years ago, this album is indeed amazing. I don't know how she managed to pull it off, I didn't think I'd enjoy it after she said it would be more electronic. I'll be seeing her live for the first time on July 4th. I can't wait. I'm lonely is definitely my favourite on this album.

"Tears" only has one version, right?

There is not a "sakaban version," right?

I saw online mention of sakaban version when looking up the lyrics.

Tears is one of my favorite Ai Otsuka songs ever. I remember first time it played; I was outside, early autumn, strolling around, scanning the scenery as I searched for items to photograph for my photography class. Tears began to play so gently, and it just set the mood. I felt like it was absolutely perfect for the moment and environment I had found myself within. It made a huge impression on me within that context. As a result, I appreciate this song immensely to this day, and I listen to it on gentle days and feel appreciative of its beauty and its existence.

terra 1st May 2015 06:40 PM

^I remember seeing it too, may have to look in my Tokyo Friends backup to see and hear if it's the same Tears

There is a Sabakan version of tears. I can rip it from my copy of the soundtrack for you this afternoon. What quality do you want?

NintendoHTF1242 1st May 2015 07:51 PM

I wish Ai would just release a damn B-Side best or something, cause she has SO many great B-sides. The B-side on Neko ni Fuusion or whatever is SO fucking good omfg that song is Heaven in the purest form.

Agreed. Natsuzora is a fucking MASTERPIECE...as is Hoshikuzu. :heart

Her b-sides are gems, I wish she would release a b-side album. I compiled it myself but gave a crappy title and artwork lol

I would love that! 320 Kbps please.

I made a b-side compilation a long time ago "愛 (Ai) LOVE B-SIDES" (I didn't use ALL b-sides though, just the ones I thought were the most worthwhile). Tried to get all 320 tracks but a few I had to make due with what was available. Just recently I was able to get kimi no kaeru. in 320 thanks to a certain member mentioning that it was part of one of her BEST releases. When compiling I listened to the beginning and endings of each track in order to get a sense for the flow the album should have. I should re-compile the collection in complete 320.

terra 1st May 2015 08:11 PM

^Yeah, I also remembered some b-sides of mine are not 320 kbps, wonder if I can find those old ones in 320

This was after her hiatus after she was married and had a child, iirc. She took a few years away from the music scene and LOVE FANTASTIC was her comeback album. I think it's a mixture of weak promo and her fans having moved on to other artists; she hadn't been mentioned in the Japanese media/music industry for a long time. Even whilst she was working with RABBIT.. it was more an indie project and wasn't super advertised.

AyuGAME 2nd May 2015 04:01 PM

She is gone for good to gave birth...but when she is got back...it's already too late, her popularity already droping down too much.
