Ayu - Anything Goes Thread -XIII-
Past time we made a new one :P
Last topic was Ivy and Gloria, and I gotta say Ivy >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gloria |
I like both. :3 but..............
Ivy is one of my favorites. |
Ivy really was my jam. I really connected with the lyrics and I felt that midtempo.
It's in my top 5, but unlike the other 4 songs that can change, Ivy is a permanent top 5. |
Ivy isn't too terrible, but her voice is so shaky and it irks me. So I have Story to replace it ♡
|
^ I kinda get what you mean... If it had came out by 2008~2010 I would have hated it, but I guess after a few songs and lives singing that way, I grew used to it :yes I always wonder how its live performance was like...
|
I hated Ivy at first, it sounded so repetitive with all those "mashita" in the verses... I was really mad at that song lol But then, and fortunately, I came to appreciate its beauty and uniqueness.:luv2
|
Ivy has amazing lyrics. When Walk came out, I knew I'd love it because the lyrics were kinda in the same vein.

I prefer Story and Shape of love than those two :yes |
If you can't appreciate Gloria's ability to perfectly encapsulate the emotion of "optimism" then there is no hope for you tbh.
Lyrics are always secondary to the music itself for me. The magic of music is that it has the ability to transmit an emotional feeling into your chest, through sound alone. You don't need words to communicate a message; in that case, you're telling the listener what to feel. Just make them feel. If you take away the storyline and remove the crutch of words that aid in painting a third party's experience, and you're still able to feel that emotion, to feel the aftermath of some sort of experience as if it were your own, that's when you know it's a good piece of music. Learn to listen with your heart and not your brain. Develop a sense for sound. It's the difference between reading a movie's synopsis, and watching the film itself. |
tbh lyrics have also got a secondary place for me since I started listening to JPop and... well, not understanding lyrics. Nowadays sometimes I will listen to a whole album in English
That said, I do like Gloria but it just doesn't grab my attention as Ivy does. It's not bad, it's just not remarkable for my taste. |
I almost always lisen to the song first and look for lyric translation later so I guess lyrics are secondary for me as well still I am quoting Gustavopc on this one:
Quote:
|
I love Ivy. One of my favourites from Love Again. Now Autumn is coming, I've started playing it again. It's a real Autumn/Winter song for me. And Walk! :D
Lots of the songs on LOVE again are good, they just got lost in the album for me. I'd quite like to mix up LOVE again, CoLOURS, A ONE and SIXXXXXX into two or three good albums in a kind of MY STORY style I think. I like Gloria too but I think it may have had a chance to shine better after The Show Must Go On for example. I also think LOVE again suffers from not having live performances of lots of the songs so it is easier to forget the album. Also, the Maro drama PVs taint the abum somewhat >.< |
Quote:
|
I like Gloria and the mellotron (?) reminds me of Strawberry Fields Forever, which is a good thing in my book. :) Ivy has never gotten my attention, but I've been playing LOVE again lately, so maybe I'll give it another chance.
|
Well I agree that the first impression of a song for me is definitely how it sounds, so yes, feeling the music. Especially when it's of a language that I don't understand. However, upon reading the lyrics, they really make me appreciate the songs more.
|
Gloria is such a glorious song lol that is the reason why I don't regret to have my Love Again album
|
That melotron intro to Gloria is the only reason I remember that song in the context of a bunch of other ayu ballads, lol... I find the lyrics fascinating from a psychological perspective but aside from those two things I find it wholly unremarkable. It's the kind of song that makes me wish I understood Japanese on-the-fly more than I do, cuz then it might click with me more.
"Ivy" is melodically & structurally a bit more memorable, but i don't think it's anything special either... I don't skip it when it comes on, but there isn't much to make me want to listen to it more than other semi-symphonic Yuta Nakano ballads like "Pray," "how beautiful you are," or "beloved" or something. Honestly I sometimes wonder if Yuta Nakano's computer died and he lost all his production software, presets, and samples sometime in 2011... |
Let's all listen to A Song For XX (album).
|
For A ONE, Ayu shoulda done a Bell -> Story. Happened on my shuffle coincidentally and it was so beautiful.
|
^a Bell had a similar buildup feels like that in Story I believe, that's why it sounds so great to pair those!
|
I love the vocals in Ivy. They're unusual and really not...pretty I guess I could say. I love Walk and Ivy equally, even if they are similar. I find that Anything for You is also somewhat similar but I haven't taken to it too well.
The ballad of hers that I just can't bring myself to like is How Beautiful You Are. I can't explain it but it really is my #2 most disliked song of hers. XD (1st being Teens...ugh....) |
ohhh, what do I find here? Ivy and Gloria discussion! Awesome, I was waiting for this :)
Ivy is more of a late autumn/ December type of song for me but Gloria is definitely fitted in September/October. Depends on the mood and day. One thing that nobody mentioned about Gloria is that Ayumi's vocals actually sound good here. She's conveying nostalgy but at the same time she seems firm. Just realised that both Gloria and Sweet Season fit this time of the year when hoar-frost starts appearing in the morning. Today was the first day of this kind and I suddenly felt the need to listen to these 2 songs (I haven't listened to Sweet Season in a very long time) |
^ I listened to Sweet Season like yesterday or the day before and it was sooooo nice, it has this september/october feel.
|
I will always ADORE Gloria. And Missing. Those two are the best songs on LOVE again. :D
|
I guess Ayu with DEPARTURES will be announced later?
Globe will be releasing a 20th anniversary tribute album on November 11th, 2015! The album will come in two editions, one edition including tribute songs from various artists and a second disk with their best tracks. Check out the info and the first set of artists below! 「 #globe20th -SPECIAL COVER BEST-」 11月11日(水)発売 ①AVCG-70111〜2(AL2枚組 Disc1:COVER、Disc2:BEST) ¥4,320(tax in) ②AVCG-70113(AL Disc1:COVER)¥3,240(tax in) ☆First Set of Participating Artists☆ E-girls Kimura Kaela GReeeeN Sakamoto Miu TRF hitomi |
Awesome. Trf and hitomi should be great! I'd love if Kahara Tomomi is included. Although I hear Keiko hates her so I guess that might not happen lol.
In terms of Ivy vs. Gloria, I don't really see them as comparable. Gloria is more similar to Life imo. Haha but tbh Gloria has become a bit forgettable. When it comes on I like it, but I don't find myself actively playing it... |
Quote:
|
I was playing a Bell in the car while driving my mom and she asked if it was from a Korean drama or a film haha I was like "nope it's a regular instrumental" Ayu's intros/interludes are always SO good (well, usually lol. Not a fan of taskillusion).
|
^ Seriously. LABYRINTH is SOOOO beautiful to listen to. As far as intros go, everlasting dream is still my favourite especially the Rainbow Dew Drop Mix <3 Lemme go listen to it right now actually!
|
Quote:
|
The full remix was disappointing compared to how it sounded in the Panasonic CM.
|
Bridge to the Sky, LABYRINTH, and everlasting dream are top 3.
Runners up: Mirror, opening Run, Starting over, Introduction |
I really like THE introduction from Rock'n'Roll Circus
and Not yet from Secret. |
For my top 3
Intro: a Bell, Bridge to the sky, Not yet Interlude: montage, overture, tasking |
The copy of Ayu's The Live 2008-2009 photobook I grabbed off Y!J FINALLY arrived today...I already took my hair dryer to the binding and ripped it apart to scan. :laugh
Here's a sneak peek! Spoiler:
|
^ Ohhhh nice, i didn't know that photobook existed!
|
I was actually going to ask you about it. I remember I requested the pics and you said you would scan them when you got your copy. I thought "Choco forgot! :("

^ Cooool, i'm looking forward to see your scans.
Thinking of buying the ayu LIFETSYLE BOOK since it's so cheap on CDJapan, like, 23€ with shipping fees. But since i'm planning on getting a few TA tour goods once they're available... My dad told me i was buying too much ayu stuff, and that's the weird thing about me : i'm a pretty stingy (is this the correct word?) person, i don't like spending my money at all, but when it comes to ayumi, i don't even look at the receipt, i don't mind spending hundreds of euros on her :laugh |
I had that book, but when I had friends over after the bar one night a few year ago, one of them ended up pissing all over my stereo and the book (which I didn't realize until the following morning after driving his ass home)!
|
^ I would have killed him omg
|
^ and then I would've brought him back to life so I could kill him again
|
Woud like m-flo to work with ayu again -_x
Something like this would be good for ayu x |

Edit: @chocopockymaster Omg the scans look flawless , haha it looks Like blue rain!! |
Wow that scan looks amazinnnng I completely forgot about that book. I never bought it.
|
Guys what is Connected PV about? I watched it and my brain is too fried to think of something meaningful and deep rn. Is it original animation for Ayu or it's like, an actual anime and Connected was the music for it?
|
I've been going through many old Ayu PVs and since i wasn't there at the time.... I have no idea what the true meanings are. Like RAINBOW for example. Why did she make the other Ayu disappear and have such a smirk on her face?
|
^ RAINBOW was about Ayu came to terms with her past self. Maybe she smirked because she succeeded to do so? :P
Anyway, Duty is 15 years old today! |
Quote:
|
^ Alright i'm totally buying you this
|
Totally forgot about how perfect this song is. |
Today I've put Duty (the album) on my playlist. 15 years since its release, wow. I was in my second year at kindergarden at the time.
|
Duty is such a masterpiece, I'm so proud of Ayu for having released this album.
|
And some of the remixes from that era too. End of the World / orb 7" 'nigh laddy' is amazing!
|
Quote:
Gloria is optimstic and has a nice message to it but I have to be in the mood for these, since I usually prefer ayu's dance/rock/ballad songs over these, but I always had a place in my heart for it, I listened to Gloria a lot when LOVE again was released. |
I wonder if Zeke can defend ASFXX's songs.
|
The lyrics for Petal are so different for Ayu...like..basically she was walking down a path, stopped at a flower and romantically played the "he loves me..he loves me not" game?
|
Quote:
Because she used to make a really squeaky and nasally high-pitched voice? Even though I have to admit that something was wrong with its time as... it sounded kinda old style even though the instruments used were up to date to that time I think, but it still kinda sounded old. Quote:
|
Quote:
Its colour, shape, and all else There was nothing I really liked about it, but I couldn’t help But be captivated by it Ayu sleeps with the guy and he had morning wood When I woke up this morning The flower was here with me It had bloomed Without showing even a sliver of fear |
In other words, she fell in love with a moron, a zero, which was hot. She had a fortune teller moment there.

How the hell could I forget POWDER SNOW, Wishing, Trust, YOU and to some extent For My Dear...
There was a time I really liked Present too. |
More preview scans from the 08-09 live book! :heart
Spoiler:
|
All ASFXX songs are great :P
Oh thank you so much choco, the quality of your scans is astounding! 2009 holds a very special place in my heart yet i never actually watched AT2009, just some performances here and there on youtube but that's it. I don't know when i'll finally download it and watch it, i should probably get all her DVDs in 1080p since i'm now able to download files at 4 mb/s |
I just had an idea
We should do an ultimate ayu album track/b-side rating, where we send in our ratings of all her album tracks from the very beginning (gut it pez era) to now, without interludes or singles (digital or physical, regardless if it was released before or after the album was released). Oh but if it was a b side that made it to an album then it won't be rated. And as for colours, the 3 special singles should count otherwise no song from it will be rated. And unlike the other rates that have happened here, each participating member gives a score from 1 to 10 (with one 0 and one 11), so that it won't be a "if you're on the forum you can subtract points and those who aren't logged on at the time lose out". I think there was a member that wanted to do this but nobody wanted to do it. I really think we should, see which deep cut is truly everyone's fave. #justiceforcriminal #justiceforguilty |
Quote:
|
^ I've even compiled a rough list of eligible songs to get the ball rolling lol
Spoiler:
There are some songs that I'm iffy about. Like You & Me for example because of its instrumental being on LOVE and we all know those are singles. I'm sure we'd be happy if it were left off anyway. There's about 127 songs there, it's crazy. #GUILTYfortop10 |
Quote:
|
^ we can ignore those singles tbh.
I know some members will come for Terminal, Lelio, and XOXO and some will pray for their well being. It'll be fun lol |
Quote:
:woohoo: This must be done. And all the other stuff you said in your quote that I deleted because I just really wanted to get the point across that I love criminal and guilty (as I know I've stated here before) and this needs to happen! |
GUILTY is such an underrated song, but I can understand why it wasn't such a big hit because it is pretty repetitive and it doesn't really go anywhere but I just love the emotion and the guitars.
criminal can stay hidden though hate that song lol. As for A Song for XX era discussion, I really love FRIEND and the lyrics to it. As if... is flawless too! And SIGNAL! The only song I don't like is For My Dear... |
I've never listened to As If... honestly I think it's the only Ayu song I've never listened to.
|
She's live on LINE right now. Anyone else watching? Her hair looks so dark! #random
|
Watching it now! Is that Rick Owens shoes?
|
I hate GUILTY. (the song)
|
^ omg why :( i love it, it's one of the few songs from the album that I still listen to (besides Together When, fated, and decision).

Criminal is still giving me the chills. It's that awesome~ :heart
GUILTY is still one of the few songs I can still listen from GUILTY along with talkin' 2 myself, Together When... and Marionette. Other songs aren't that awesome anymore. Maybe because I can't relate to them anymore. :/ |
GUILTY is such a great album. It has decision a.k.a. the song with the best breakdown ever!
Glitter/MY ALL are so out of place in it. |
I like GUILTY as an album and as a song. I just love it as an album, it feels out of place to me in her discography for some reason. It was the 1st CD of hers for me to buy. I was totally hooked on it back when.
It has such a heavy feel about it. And the lighter/more upbeat songs actually don't take away from the experience for me, in fact, they kind of just emphasize the darker feelings mixed into the album. I think for me, it was one of the albums she released that had that really unique, strong "Ayu" feeling. It was a little reminiscent of Duty for me, which I love. |
Guilty was the first album I pre-ordered from Ayu. i became a fan around the (miss)understood era but being a rebellios teenager and all I was often grounded and didn't have access to a computer often so I was always late to the party. With Guilty I was around when they announed the tittle and when the first revealed the pv's and the covers and I remember being so ecxited and happy.
Guilty, the song, is beautiful in my opinion and I remember having it on re-play all the time when the album first came out and I remember that I was dying to see a live performance of it. We never did get one did we? I remember it wasn't performe during the Asia Tour but has it ever been performed in any other tour or CDL? What a shame if it hasn't! |
It hasn't been performed. Maybe she'll do it at the TA Tour.
|
I don't listen to GUILTY anymore since i overplayed this album when i became a fan which is a pity because i love it and the song is ♥
|
GUILTY (the song) was kind of a letdown when the album was released. It sounded very anticlimactic and forgettable. However, I enjoy the atmosphere the song creates now, especially now that she has released many shittier songs by comparison.
|
Quote:
There was nothing that stood out to me when that album came out. It's one of the blurs in her discography for me. |
Quote:
|
I like how GUILTY possessed an enhanced, improved style compared to Secret. It makes me think of in my art courses how we learn from the last painting we did, take what we learned and refine it and improve it in the next piece.
|
Quote:
GUILTY is that album that I love and hate. I looooooove rocker Ayu and so when the album was released and it was mostly rock songs I was sooooo freaking excited. But the songs are repetitive and have either been performed so often that I'm just meh about it now or are just out of place (Glitter/MY ALL. I do like those songs, but on that album? No thank you.) However. All that said. Decision is a beast, Guilty (the song) is haunting, Together When is great (to me) and Marionette is perfect storytelling when it comes to music/lyrics (again. that's just my opinion, but I love the dramatic ride it takes me on.) |
GUILTY was the first Ayu album I heard and bought. It's still my favorite album of hers. I remember the day I bought it, I listened to talkin' 2 myself 50 times in a row. I also tried to sing it many times and that came out crappy. Would love to try and cover it now that I know how to sing and play piano.
And hey guys, what do you think of this user? https://www.youtube.com/user/adooph3 Personally, he ticks me off because all his "remixes" are just Ayu's vocals slapped on pre-existing Trance songs. For example, when I nicely pointed out that his "remix" of Rule was a mashup and not a remix because he put the vocals over Sunny Lax's Reborn, he screeched at me, deleted my comment, blocked me, and deleted the video. I really wish I could report him or something for art theft, but it probably wouldn't get far since Ayu and uplifting Trance aren't super popular. It just annoys me because he tries to claim the backing music as his own, but it's just not? I know these songs lol. |
Ugh, that guy.
It upsets me because I really like the mash-ups, and if he admitted that's what they were maybe we'd get full(er) length, high quality downloads of them. Everyone does mash-ups, they DO take some talent & work to get right, so why not be proud of the mash-ups, post them on soundcloud or something, and stop being so dodgy? But no, he's pretty much just an unreasonable crazy person x_x |
The thing is, the sound quality of his remixes (or mash-ups) is extremely bad, and to me it spoils the whole track...
Plus we never get to hear the full length tracks ! I like his work, but it's barely done... |
Ugh, those mash up remixes that guy "did" are horrible. I have heard many better ones. :D

Hi guys...I want to share this new single from Akina...
http://www.ahsforum.com/forum/showth...24#post3166624 I really want Ayu to go into this direction...I can imagine Ayu sing this kind of song without problem. I think she really need to work with new arranger and composer. I mean if Akina who is 50 years old can sing this kind of song..which is very modern and very current. Why Ayu not? Akina getting a new peak..with her latest best album and now this single is out and doing really well in the recochoku chart. |
