Rock Ballads

Hi you guys,

I'm having fun these days with my "Rock-Ballad" - playlist by Ayu, whcih, as of now, consists of 26 songs. But! - I cannot come to shake the feeling that i forgot quite a few songs. So which songs, apart from the ones listed below, would you consider rock-ballads (ballad in the sense of slow-emotional song)?

- memorial address
- a song for
- liar
- hope or pain
- sorrows
- momentum
- free & easy
- love song
- NOW & 4 EVA
- return road
- count down
- decicion
- (miss) understood
- criminal
- no way to say
- never ever
- heratplace
- M
- Missing
- endless sorrow
- moon
- reminds me
- duty
- gulity
- last minute

Uknow! 22nd October 2015 02:45 PM

It Was
Marionette
End Of The World
Out of control

Maybe Petal too

xLuna&1LOVE 22nd October 2015 03:22 PM

I consider Far Away as a rock ballad?

Pieces_of_SEVEN 22nd October 2015 07:01 PM

definitely fated. Also maybe kiss 'o kill, and sending mail.

MessiahofSilence 23rd October 2015 02:17 AM

Does Tell All's Team Ayu version count?

DonkeyKongRemix 23rd October 2015 03:59 AM

Together When...

channy 23rd October 2015 05:24 PM

"Last Links" comes to my mind and does "Letter" still count as a rock ballad, too? :)

orbitalaspect 23rd October 2015 08:42 PM

Pray
crossroad
beloved
Melody
SAKURA
Gloria
do it again
November
Sweet Season
Will
reminds me
Over

Many may not be your taste, but these are all generally considered rock ballads by more or less many fans.

Pieces_of_SEVEN 24th October 2015 03:02 PM

^how? :shakehead

thinkingoutloud89 24th October 2015 03:09 PM

thanks for the suggestions. i tired them in the list.
I rejected some though.

- tell all is close but has a different feeling...more like Mirrocle World
- fated leans more towards being a ballad than having that sorrowful sound
- kiss o kill is more of a pop-rock tune
- petal was too soft

so far I kept: It was, Mrionette, End of the world, out of control and together when + far away of which I'm not so sure yet

Pieces_of_SEVEN 24th October 2015 03:23 PM

^If you think fated is more of a ballad and petal is too soft, I guarantee that these previously listed songs will also be considered ballads to you ;)

thinkingoutloud89 24th October 2015 03:31 PM

^yes they are
I know all ayu songs... I just thought I may missed a few for this list
Melody and Sweet Seasons are .idtempo for me...and so is Will. do it again is some sort of hybrid. Would call it rockish-upbeat (pop)?
reminds me is in my list though.

Minttulatte 25th October 2015 06:21 PM

Here's my list:

- POWDER SNOW
- End roll
- Who...
- SCAR
- Far away
- still alone
- Dearest
- HANABI ~episode II~
- No way to say
- HOPE or PAIN
- CAROLS
- HAPPY ENDING
- criminal
- It was
- fated
- Together When...
- Marionette
- GREEN
- Last Links
- You were...
- MOON
- crossroad
- reminds me
- SAKURA
- petal
- Last minute
- Sorrows

I chose these because I get a strong rock ballad vibe from these. There may be more but I already had trouble with making this so I'll stop this here.

And M isn't rock. It's power pop ballad with ethereal wave influences in it. If that song is considered a rock ballad, add momentum on the list too. Those two are like sisters with their similar music style (which is pop).

Chibi-Chan 25th October 2015 07:37 PM

After reading this thread and people defining songs like Who..., Melody, Sweet Season, beloved and so on as rock I have just one question: do you guys ever listened to actual rock music and rock ballads? Honestly, that's like saying Boys & Girls is an electro pop song. Just because a songs' arrangement uses an electric guitar or drums doesn't make it a rock song...

Next_Level29 25th October 2015 10:12 PM

can someone recommend other rock ballads outside of ayus huge music list?

and many more I probably forgot right now.

Minttulatte 26th October 2015 01:04 AM

I think the so called "rules of rock" doesn't apply to Ayu's music since she has never been a rock artist. Even her rock songs are still pop. Therefore there's no reason to get so pissed off over this like some people here have. It's no use. People's opinions are not going to change. :')

thinkingoutloud89 26th October 2015 11:13 PM

I did not want to make people mad.
Iny own regards, just by naming three songs:

beloved is the most ballady ayu can get for me, where as Memorial address and A Song for XX describe what I was amaing for the most. does it make sense?

douggn 27th October 2015 02:21 PM

Though I'm pretty sure when writing some of these songs or recording them, she will say what type of song it is, then everyone expects one thing and the songs sounds another. But I guess the fun of AHS when a simple question gets thrown around like this :P

Though if you listen to early rock as when it was first appearing on the stage, it doesn't sound 'hard rock', basically goes down to the instruments used and how the song progresses.

Though I know Marionette is a good example of a rock ballad

The definition of a Power Ballad/Rock Ballad
Quote:

An emotional hard rock/heavy metal song, often with a slow tempo, dramatic sung vocals, and many instruments, including acoustic ones and synthesizers. Power ballads usually start soft, then heaviness builds up with drums and heavy electric guitars.
It boils down to 2 major components.
1. The right theme : Stuff like love, death, fear, suicide, depression, even war and deceit with poetic lyrics that involve a certain amount of repetition for added effect on the listener.

2. The tempo and instruments : Usually a slow tempo with instruments like acoustic guitars, saxophones, keyboards, pianos or even ukuleles if necessary.

That's how you tell instead of ripping at each others throats :P It basically draws down to what emotions the song evokes with certain instruments

These do meet the requirements:
crossroad
do it again
Sweet Season
reminds me

Over - possible

These are a bit too happy
Melody
SAKURA
Gloria
Will
November
beloved

They have to be a dark song basically of loss or death or some type of pain
Songs you listen when you are depressed basically :P

BlackSilence 27th October 2015 03:27 PM

yearly rock was basically rock'n'roll more than anything else, it gotten heavier probably in what? 70s lale 60s?

to me rock ballads are darker than anything and what kind of rock music it is if it does't have any kind of guitars in there?

i only take these as sort of a real deal from her:
Marionette
Memorial address
Moon
Sorrows
Last Minute
Criminal
Still alone
Guilty
Countdown
Return Road
fated

A lot of her stuff is just influenced by the genre, there aren't many that i actually would call rock ballads. And half of the ones that i mentioned above are more mid tempo really. She has a lot of pop rock in her discography for sure. But if you search enough you can find even symphonic rock in there.

this would be a typical rock ballad.

douggn 27th October 2015 05:27 PM

She's just influenced by yoshio :P and to give him Awsome guitar moments for her tour :P
But over all its just considered pop since that what she is known for, but you could brake it down if you really wanted.

^^ I agree with that :) her music is more influenced

BlackSilence 27th October 2015 07:32 PM

^well pop rock is a more mainstream version of rock for masses. It's lighter and more approachable. And that's more what Ayu does. Even though some of her songs can be much darker than the usual pop rock stuff, she still has less of those than the other.

I do think that Chibi-chan has a point svn though yeah she got a little bit heated up. I'm a rock fan myself, the actual rock. And it gets me going too if someone says it's rock when in fact it's not, it's just influenced by it. Ayu has never been a rock artist. She can pull it off, though if she wants. we know she enjoys rock stuff every now and then because she herself mentioned a few artists that influenced her on that aspect. Her music is still more appealing to the general public rather than a specific audience.

DonkeyKongRemix 27th October 2015 08:11 PM

Ok, this is starting to make sense to me. My dad is actually a rock musician and he knows a ton of stuff about this. I personally listen heavy metal and nu metal and less just...rock, I guess? I've listened to a lot of light rock at least. It just baffles me that people could get so offended by this whole thing.

But then, as an artist, if someone tried to convince me that gothic art was the same as classical,I would get annoyed...

BlackSilence 27th October 2015 08:56 PM

it is easy to get offended by this stuff, i would too honestly, maybe not to the extent, because i simply ignore people who doesn't try to learn things because they just don't care, but it bothers me too because there are genres in music and they have criteria that makes the songs fit into them. Classical music is classical because it's classical and not pop lol if you get my point. So i do understand You Chibi-chan.
It doesn't make the people, who know little to nothing besides their own opinion, stupid, it just means they don't care, that's all. lol
Lots of the songs orbitalaspect mentioned has nothing to do with rock. I did go "huh?" at that too, but hey....everyone is entitled to not give a shit about what they aren't exact fans of, but yeah i guess before you argue, you need to at least bite into the stuff you're arguing about, cuz it can make you look like a fool. Even if you aren't one. lol

koumori 27th October 2015 11:11 PM

Not everyone knows everything you do, so if we could educate each other nicely that would be a big step forward.
Removed some posts but keeping thread open since most of the discussion was quite interesting. Don't undermine your intelligence with insults.

BlackSilence 28th October 2015 12:28 AM

i agree with ya Koumori. Though i didn't exactly saw any insults being thrown around. I didn't see anyone calling anybody stupid or dumb.*shrugs* but anyways.

Montebello 28th October 2015 12:43 AM

I just want to say I love count down and Last Links. I wish Rock 'n Roll Circus had more rock-influenced songs instead of RED LINE and those LOVE is ALL abominations.

Chibi-Chan 28th October 2015 12:47 AM

@artcika: btw, I love your NANA cosplay! ♡

To be honest I find that a little unfair, because I don't think I called anyone names or something like that. I don't think it's in favour of a better discussion culture to delet everything especially when people, or I, were calming down already. I tried to explain myself and I think I got a discussable point. I would have liked to wait and see if OrbitalAspect maybe would have answered and also calmed down and I would have liked to see if we would have both been able to get along and to apologize. That isn't possible anymore because the discussion is closed, sadly.
But since you are a moderator I respect your decision and I won't bring up anything of the former argument again. =)

koumori 28th October 2015 01:13 AM

I was speaking in general. A few posts were worded aggressively and for overall 'discussion culture', it could have been handled better by all involved.
If anyone wants to talk further about this, my inbox is open.

Chibi-Chan 28th October 2015 01:27 AM

^I don't think that needs to be discussed further. You're the moderator, you made a decision and I will respect that.

thinkingoutloud89 28th October 2015 12:00 PM

Again, I'm sorry for causing trouble. I gave an list of what is an "ayu rock-ballad" for me. Yet, i don't think other artist could apply to that style - it is very certain for ayu herself.

Chibi-Chan 28th October 2015 02:00 PM

^I don't think you were the one causing trouble, so nothing to apology for.^^
I'm sorry I kind if destroyed the thread you opened.
