Yuki Kajiura's melodies (FictionJunction, Kalafina, Sword Art Online,...) 3rd Thread

Kalafina (カラフィナ) is a Japanese band formed by composer Yuki Kajiura in 2007, mainly to perform theme songs for the anime Kara no Kyōkai. The band debuted in January 2008 with two original members from Yuki Kajiura's FictionJunction project, Wakana Ōtaki and Keiko Kubota (not confirmed until the first Dream Port 2008 concert held on April 29, 2008). In May 2008, two vocalists Maya (who is no longer a part of Kalafina) and Hikaru, who had been chosen from an audition of 30,000 participants held by Sony Music Japan and Yuki Kajiura, were confirmed as the final members of Kalafina.

Can some mod please move this into the Artists & Bands section? Q__Q

Watched many of their lives this days and I'm in love with their voices. My favourite must be Hikaru's, her voice is so innocent-sounding in some songs. Natsu no ringo and snow falling are so good live, hopefully I'll see the girls someday in a concert.

After Eden has really grown on me as an album, there are so many great songs there.

Just finished listening to Consolation. I really like the addition of the accordion in tracks like Hatanaba and Signal. Yees for more experimentation.

Yoake 24th February 2016 04:37 PM

Chiharo 25th February 2016 03:13 PM

I really love the song. I wish the release was earlier than April, though.

Surreal17 28th February 2016 08:08 AM

Wow, I really like the sound of the new song. The rich instrumentation gives the feel of a folk song but at the same time it reminds me of old-styled japanese music (for ex Hibari Misora).

Yoake 3rd March 2016 10:08 AM

Arcila no hoshi is available to download : http://aichun.co/?mp3=36963

Surreal17 14th March 2016 01:44 PM

Finally got my hands on far on the water album. And with this I've listened to their whole discography.
Lead singles from "far on the water" are anison-ish, similar and disappointing except Ring your bell but at least we've got a lot of good bsides and album tracks.

My favourite tracks from this era are : in every nothing, Lapis, koibito no mukashigatari no yuugure no, When the early summer rain has passed (forgot japanese title), into the water, monochrome (amazing), Gogatsu no mahou, ring your bell, Usumurasaki, sorairo no isu (love). Enough to create new album lol.

I don't think they have a single bad era but I hope they don't continue with these anison inspired singles.

mellody 18th March 2016 08:01 AM

Oh? The thread continues?
Anyway, I kinda hope the discussion is expanding to Yuki Kajiura works but well..

So, Surreal17, after you finished the whole discography, you need to see the lives. You can start from Red Moon, but whichever is good.
Their lives are fun to watch, especially the recent one with -a lot of- choreographies.

Also, Samidare ga Sugita Koro ni (When Early Summer Rain Has Passed) needs more love.

Surreal17 18th March 2016 09:04 AM

I've seen almost all their tours. The Red Moon one, the After Eden and Consolation ones and also Red Day Live 2015. I only have left Blue Day Live.
Agree, their lives are really good vocally speaking and also fun at times. I particularly like the Te to Te to me to me performance which include the dancing.

mellody 18th March 2016 10:42 AM

I see. Did you notice the change in Hikaru's voice from early concerts to recent one? or it's just me..

Blue Day > Red Day for me.
While in Red Day, fairytale is the highlight, you gotta see Magia in Blue Day. and seventh heaven. and heavenly blue. and Ongaku. and.. the rest of it.

Surreal17 18th March 2016 11:30 AM

Yeah, I did notice. Her vocals in the Red Moon tour were splendid but somewhere between 2012 or 2013 her voice got a bit..I don't know how to say, maybe hoarse. Wakana also has some problems at one point if I remember correctly but in recent tours her voice is top notch. Keiko seems to control her's very well.

Surreal17 29th March 2016 07:24 PM

"Eir Aoi and Kalafina will be providing the opening and ending theme songs respectively for the second season of the TV anime “Arslan Senki”, scheduled to air in July.

Based on the manga illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa, the second season entitled “Arslan Senki: Fujin Ranbu” (The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Dust Storm Dance) continues the adventures of Arslan, the crown prince of Pars, as he fights to reclaim his kingdom.

“Arslan Senki” was originally a fantasy novel series written by Yoshiki Tanakabut was later adapted into a manga by Hiromu Arakawa of the Full Metal Alchemist fame.

Details such as the title of the songs have yet to be announced."

mellody 30th March 2016 12:16 PM

Good news, finally a new song! I like One Light from the series.

Anyway, does anyone here interested to see their sales? (Singles & Albums)

Surreal17 30th March 2016 01:46 PM

Actually, I hope its different from One Light. I want something more folkish.
Yeah, why do you ask about their sales?

Yoake 31st March 2016 09:31 PM

Yeah for the second season of Arslan Senki :D

As Kajiura said it in one of her interview, she composed her song in accordance with the anime's story. So, there is a lot of chance that we get One Light II, in particular that it's the ending song again. But who know?

mellody : sales aren't important for me to be honest.

mellody 5th April 2016 07:16 AM

Well, I don't really care about sales that much, though, even the girls (Kalafina) themselves, they said it's okay if you're just buy one copy of their physical release.

There was an interesting story about them and the fan during the release of heavenly blue (as a re-cut) single. They are doing a promotion in NicoNico and during the show, they read some fans comments. There's a fan saying that he wanted to buy more than one copy for this single, because they want to support them. Interestingly enough, Keiko answered that comment by saying that one copy will do, and Wakana added that as long as our song can reach their heart, it's more than enough and I also heard that Kalafina gained more recognition after this. (Have I told this story before? I think I did.)

Anyway, speaking about sales, their sales numbers are really determined by the popularity of the tied-in anime. This is one of the most trusted source: http://anisonsinger.blogspot.co.id/2.../kalafina.html

Madoka Magica was really popular and it helped to boost Magia sales, and I think Kalafina popularity as well. All the singles related to that anime (Magia, Hikari Furu, Kimi no Gin no Niwa) is really helping. That being said, we can conclude that Kalafina sales numbers depends on the tie-in.

I hope this is an interesting information (and open for discussion).

Yoake 7th April 2016 08:57 PM

Anime helps a lot to promote songs and artists. But I also think that being a Yuki Kajiura's band is one of the big reason that the girls are doing well too. She is a solid value.

There is a new song called into the world that is the theme of Rekishi Hiwa Historia. You can hear a preview here :http://kalafinafanblog.blogspot.be/2...-historia.html

Yoake 3rd July 2016 11:29 PM

Arslan Senki's ending :

mellody 4th July 2016 12:04 PM

The song is quite repetitive, but in a good way. Definitely a grower.
Hopefully the full song is better, I still like One Light better.

Surreal17 4th July 2016 01:59 PM

I'm glad that Kalafina is back, I hope the single is succesful. I don't like the song tbh, but they have sooo many great songs that I'm not too worried. Maybe the full ver. will grow on me.

Zahara 4th July 2016 11:14 PM

I'm really not feeling the song.

mellody 5th July 2016 03:13 AM

Anyway, I watched far on the water tour yesterday and it's a must-watch concert. Kalafina is really stepping up the game in this concert. They have more choreography now, but it wasn't as bad as previous ones, Budokan concert was great but this one is even better, they have some interesting concept for this whole performance. More entertaining as in performance wise, vocal wise, visual wise, and so on.

"Natsu no asa" is beautiful :luv2

Yoake 11th August 2016 02:37 PM

Yep, I prefer Natsu no Asa than Blaze. It reminds me pre-2010s Kajiuya's work mixed with Pandora Hearts a lot.

mellody 12th August 2016 04:51 AM

blaze sounds like... super sentai or japan superhero song in early 90's, kinda generic but not boring. I prefer One Light all the way for this anime.

I can tell Natsu no Asa is amazing right away when the flute comes in.

Yoake 13th August 2016 03:40 PM

"a marry little Christmas"? I tried to check the official website to understand who did the typo but the information page doesn't work for me anymore. It's loading eternally. >.<

mellody 25th October 2016 12:52 PM

The official website made some mistakes for this tracklist. It's In dulci jubilo not duici, I believe it's Bach music (including from heaven above). Also, there's one track supposed to be acoustic (or piano) version (it's Alleluia), not strings I think..

Morobito Kozorite is correct, but maybe can add it's Japanese version of Joy To The World and Yasashii Uta is reported to be a new track, according to Sony Music website description (though for real the title always reminds me to the last line of 'to the beginning').

^I like the pv and their outfits are ones of their best. The introduction is beautiful with this mix of traditional and classical. The rest on the other hand is boring. The arrangement isn't new and the melody doesn't move me.

Did you mean far on the water?

If that's what you mean, I personally not too much. I like the first half of the album, but the second half (starting from Musunde Hiraku) isn't really memorable for me. Sure it's showcasing an evolved Kalafina with the songs like Gogatsu no Mahou, identify, and Usumurasaki, but it feels like not having 'Kalafina' touch, something magical about them.

If you mean the very recent album Winter Acoustic, I like that a lot, as much as original album. It's my December's album.

After 25 years with the talent agency Space Craft Produce, musician and composer Yuki Kajiura has decided to leave the company.

Kajiura has been a prominent force within the anime music scene for decades. The musician has been behind the music used in popular series such as Fate/Zero, Sword Art Online and .hack//Sign.

In addition to creating music, Kajiura created the FictionJunction project. She is also responsible for creating Kalafina, a female music group known internationally, particularly for their works featured in anime series.

Kajiura has been the main creative force behind Kalafina, guiding the group's direction since the beginning. Kalafina will continue without Kajiura, though the musician acknowledged that the group's status and sound may end up changing without her.

According to reports from news agency Sponichi, Kajiura's departure from Space Craft Produce came after new management was put in place that she had difficulties working with. Her new manager was brought on board in 2016, and the two could not agree upon the direction of her music.

In another report by Sponichi, the media outlet cites a sources close to the group who claims that the members of Kalafina are having a difficult time coping with Kajiura's departure. The group currently has no activities planned, and discussions regarding future activities have had a difficult time moving forward.

Kajiura will be working on a freelance basis for the immediate future.

Wow, I never expected that something like this might happen. Never even imagined Kalafina existing separately from Kajiura, but of course they would be under a different contract. It's sad that their working relationship comes to an end like this.

However... I haven't been impressed by anything Kalafina has released during the last few years and I've felt like Kajiura's sound and songs have been kind of uninspired, so best-case scenario? Kalafina's music might get a shot in the arm and be better than it's been for a while. Not sure how likely that is, but I want to hope for the best, for both them and Kajiura.

mellody 2nd March 2018 05:19 AM

Started out as a rumor before their 10th anniversary, now it's confirmed by Kajiura herself and in February 2018 that she's leaving for good.

Kajiura stated before there will be a new single in spring for Kalafina, but this news makes their future undecided (although Kalafina is about to release a documentary movie regarding their 10th anniversary + their future projects, now it's unknown whether their future means a future without Kajiura or disbanding, or etc.) and now Spacecraft is considering to hire someone else to direct Kalafina, which is very hard.

Seriously, Kalafina without Kajiura is just like... Haruna Luna, or other singers who worked with her before (some of them are still working with her) like Nanri Yuuka and Kaori Oda. No more Kajiurago, no more classical rendition of their older songs, it will become very different. At this point I'm just hoping FictionJunction will be back.

Wakana and Keiko are also part of FictionJunction, I wonder how they feel about this.

Also, Kalafina became a trending topic (Twitter) in Japan several weeks ago because of this news. To my surprise, I never thought this news was very big and Kalafina popularity is actually high demand.

adantatu2 5th March 2018 03:47 AM

For me their last songs are not as amazing as their first ones, but it' really hard to imagine Kalafina without Kajiura.
I hope they can continue.

Kalafina disbanding at the end of Spring

Vocal group Kalafina is said to be disbanding at the end of Spring.

The catalyst for the group falling apart is due to Yuki Kajiura making her departure from SACRA MUSIC, which is a subsidiary of Sony Music.

Kajiura was a “support” member for the group, while she didn’t appear in promotional pictures and videos she was responsible for many duties behind the scenes. This includes composing, arranging, producing, and providing backing vocals.

While it was reported that the group would continue on without Kajiura, things eventually fell apart behind the scenes.

On March 11th the girls held a live event, and after that their schedule is virtually blank. Their radio show Kalafina Club is still happening, but an announcement has already been made that the final episode will air at the end of March.

It’s rumored that the sudden stop, and eventual departure of Kajiura and the group will put a huge burden on their office resulting in an alleged blow of 2 billion yen. Kalifina isn’t the only one suffering from issues with their office, last year both Rola and Mariya Nishiuch went head to head with their management.

Kalafina made their debut in 2008 with the release of their single Oblivious, theme song for the anime series Kara no Kyoukai Fukan Fuukei. They have went on to gain notatriy among anime fans by providing themes for Sora no Oto, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, and Rekishi Hiwa Historia.

They released 5 studio albums, and 21 singles.

Ok, let's clear things up, Kalafina is not disbanding, but only one member will leave the group. One of my friends who is the member of Harmony (Kalafina Fan Club) is confirming this news, so we decided to go with this news, and it's official as well.

Quote:

As many of you may already know, there are rumors about Kalafina's disbandment due to Yuki Kajiura parting ways with her and Kalafina's shared agency.

No official statement has been made by Kalafina's staff. However, the Harmony Fanclub members have received a message concerning Kalafina's future. It states that although Kalafina will not disband, one member will leave the group and the remaining members will continue as a duo.

Currently, Kalafina are still scheduled to appear in events through to the end of March. We hope this post will help to clear things up. :)

The Harmony Fanclub e-mail contained the following message:

"To Harmony Fanclub members,

Today, news concerning Kalafina has surfaced from one media outlet, so we would like to inform the fan club members of the following.

One member of Kalafina has expressed intent of leaving the group, and upon receipt of said request, we have decided to accept it. The two remaining members will continue activities with our agency.
While giving utmost respect and importance to Yuki Kajiura's works through activities intended to express passion for said music, we would like to continue with our plans that all of the fans will enjoy and will be happy about.
We shall announce them soon.

We would like to ask for your continued support.

March 13, 2018
- SpaceCraft Produce"

Again, we would like to clarify that Kalafina are not disbanding. Regarding the change in their member lineup, we would like to encourage everyone to continue supporting Kalafina in the future.

Still a better news rather than just disbanding, yet Kalafina won't be the same anymore.

I'm guessing the one who is going to leave is either Keiko or Hikaru. Why?

The recent 10th anniversary pamphlet interview reveals Hikaru's thoughts for so long, she said that her voice is somehow out of place, and saying that the combination of Keiko and Wakana is the true sound of Kalafina.

Keiko's interview was rather simple, something like, "Wherever Kajiura is going, I will always follow her." So, yeah.

Surreal17 13th March 2018 10:04 PM

I'm also thinking the same thing. I'm glad that they are not disbanding but I really want to know who is going to leave. Whoever is it, it's definitely not going to be the same.

mellody 14th March 2018 05:35 AM

Speculations and rumors said, Keiko is the one who leave. There's even a tabloid pic something, but let's just wait.

Kalafina is a duo without the alto voice? I'm not sure anynore if I'm still interested.

Yoake 14th March 2018 02:47 PM

To me with a member leaving it's the same than disbanding. :/
Yes we'll get new music but without Kajiura and three voices, it'll be as a new band or a bad copy. And I can't imagine how their old songs'll sound in concert now.

CatGirl 14th March 2018 08:40 PM

Apparently Keiko owns the trademark to the name "Kalafina," so if she leaves, the group might have to be renamed. The whole situation is pretty sad - I was never super into Kalafina but I love Yuki Kajiura, and it just sucks seeing things go down like this.

I have to agree. Lineup changes in Japanese/Korean groups are, for some reason, more critical than in American groups. Tohoshinki might still be performing well, but they're definitely not as "hot" since the departure of JYJ. I mean, I'll take a Changmin pill any day of the freakin' week, but Tohoshinki is just not the same.

Imagine how Perfume would seem if they lost a member? I'm slightly traumatized just thinking about it.

I think if kalafina reforms as a duo under a different name, maybe with another dedicated composer, that may work out well. I'd love to see the girls try new things with those voices too. I've always found gems in kalafina's albums, but I've also thought they're too constrained in terms of what they can do vocally.

Maemi 15th March 2018 10:47 AM

Even if only one leaves the group won't be the same - ever again.

I have to agree with this.

Kalafina as a trio has three different voices, Wakana as Soprano, Hikaru as (somehow) mezzo-soprano, and Keiko as alto. If Keiko is no longer part of the group, then it's only Soprano and mezzo-soprano and some of their songs can't be performed very well, since Keiko's low register is very unique and irreplaceable.

I'm quite surprised that this news about Kalafina garnered quite a lot of attention. I never thought many people like them even though they are quite popular now.

adantatu2 19th March 2018 06:42 AM

Kalafina without one of the girls would not be the same. It would be difficult to keep promoting as Kalafina without the main producer/composer and without one of the talented girls.

Surreal17 13th April 2018 05:46 PM

Keiko left Kalafina.

http://www.jpopasia.com/feed/23663/k...aves-kalafina/

adantatu2 16th April 2018 02:19 AM

Keiko was always my favourite, her deep voice, her visuals, I'm going to miss her a lot. I don't know if the other 2 girls will continue with Kalafina, but I hope they don't add a third one.

Ashen Twilight 16th April 2018 03:11 AM

Mine as well. Songs that she had the main vocal were always my favorite.

Yoake 22nd October 2018 01:39 PM

Wakana will release a song in solo called Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni

mellody 25th October 2018 09:06 PM

Kalafina will also release all-time best 2008-2018.

Sorry but kinda lazy to put the source, I was emailed by Sony (I subscribed to Kalafina newsletter).

Yoake 26th October 2018 04:18 PM

I saw it in my e-mail via CDJapan. I think it's really the end even they did they'll carry on with the two last members.

Did we get some news about the next work of Kajiura?

mellody 28th October 2018 09:54 AM

You should watch the documentary movie about their 10th anniversary to (somehow) figure out what they are going to do next, even though I'm really really not sure if they'll carry on with the two last members. Wakana just held solo live along with Hikaru but they still couldn't find any producers yet. I'm not sure either if they will continue as a duo, the quality of their music is as good as Kajiura. I'm afraid they will become something generic.

Next work of Kajiura? There are many actually. Here's the list as far as I can remember:
  • She was in AnimeExpo2018 in L.A.
  • She just finished YK Live vol #14 and #15 is in the preparation.
  • She has a new company called FictionJunction Music.
  • She has composed for SAO (again) for the 3rd series called Alicisation.
  • She will be in composers concert or something.

During her previous concert, Joelle was in the list of the singers. I think many will know her from her previous works in Linked Horizon. But, what makes me kinda worried is that Keiko is never in the list of Kajiura concerts anymore. Not to mention Wakana as well.

The aftermath of this situation is kinda complicated. It makes me wonder if Keiko has a problem with Kajiura but hopefully it is not.

Yoake 31st October 2018 05:50 PM

If Keiko left Kalafina to follow Kajiura I doubt that. Maybe there is something wrong because of the contract with Sony? I remember that Mariya Nishiuchi can't also get new work before her contract wasn't over with her label.

Thanks for the infos. :)

ayuzo 31st October 2018 06:50 PM

Maybe Keiko's taking a break, or so I optimistically hope. Wonder if there's any chance of her doing something solo?

Keiko actually has a chance to go solo. As far as I know, she's also a good friend of Kaori (FJ) and Kaori is also doing solo act now even though only moderate success or so, but quite popular I think. Maybe she can discuss together to do something or it can be anything.

There's this rumor about Keiko trying to get the trademark of Kalafina's brand name or something but the application was rejected. Never know what happened after that rumor.

ALSO ALSO, Aimer new single is confirmed will be released in 9th January, which is yet another theme song for Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel movie (for part II lost butterfly, to be exact) and it will be composed by Kajiura again! 2nd collaboration after Hana no Uta! :love

EDIT:
Hikaru is also leaving Kalafina.
Source: https://lineblog.me/kalafina/archives/67149767.html

I guess the name "Kalafina" itself is a trainwreck now, only Wakana left. Go back to your mother NAO!

The news about Keiko kinda makes me sad, but this time, the whole thing is kinda funny somehow.

adantatu2 5th November 2018 01:38 AM

Wakana, please leave Kalafina too !!!

She's going solo next year (perhaps under the name Kalafina, just like Superfly) so I'm afraid it will happen anytime soon.

Solarblade 14th March 2019 05:06 AM

Kalafina has officially disbanded - http://www.spacecraft.co.jp/kalafina/

mellody 14th March 2019 10:23 PM

Why Spacecraft waited for a year though. They surely couldn't find any distinctive mastermind like Kajiura so... yeah, inevitable.

Kalafina 10th anniversary stuff is actually a final goodbye.
If you want to read Kalafina's history, here's a page made by canta-per-me.net with all the details.

Meanwhile, Wakana solo album is coming soon.

oaristos 15th March 2019 04:43 AM

I was so sad to hear they disbanded. I stumbled upon one of their concerts on YouTube and it reminded me how much I loved "oblivious" and "sprinter" when they first came out. So many memories :heart

It's the end of an era.

Should we keep that thread for solo activities and Kajiura's activities? I can change the title to fit that.

I think it's better if changed to Yuki Kajiura thread and mention some of her popular works such Kalafina and FictionJunction or popular anime title perhaps? Because Kalafina is actually dead and... her singers like Hikaru and Keiko (presumably) will be working with Kajiura again in the future. But I'm not sure if it will be interesting to most people here.

Kajiura herself is being independent now with FictionJunction and Wakana is being solo in the meantime perhaps due to a certain contract.

If anyone is interested, Hikaru is having a personal Twitter account now and sometimes she communicate in English too. She's sometimes being the voice of Keiko too so yeah, it will be fun to connect with her in such a way.

Yoake 20th March 2019 09:54 AM

The last biggest anime she worked on is Sword Art Online series.

Yuki Kajiura's world (Kalafina, FictionJunction,..) Thread?

Sword Art Online Yuki Kajiurazation thread? XD

mellody 20th March 2019 09:48 PM

Something like that... I guess :laugh

Everything Yuki Kajiura? Just.. I couldn't think any of good titles.

Yoake 22nd March 2019 10:07 AM

XD I was running out of inspiration too. But I went with Yuki Kajiura's melodies because it includes all her projects. ^^

It's already an old video. Someone made a digest of Kalafina's songs :

mellody 25th March 2019 10:55 AM

The name of the thread sounds like inspired by my name :laugh

They will be missed.

Yoake 26th March 2019 11:14 AM

^XD I haven't paid attention to that at all. Maybe it worked as a subliminal message ah ah.

What's your view on Wakana's 1st album?
They're going with the identity of a ballad girl with some orchestral-ish arrangements. Overall the album is good but I wasn't taken with any songs. Some of them are lacking of power. A song like Ai no Hana should make me shivers but the outcome is kinda flat. It's like a cook who failed his soufflé. I think that if the album wasn't sung by such a beautiful voice I would have gone on my way.

Surreal17 28th March 2019 11:33 PM

I finally managed to listen to her debut. I really enjoy the album, it is way better than I was expecting. Even if most of the songs are on the slower side, they have interesting arrangements, using many instruments. It is true that not all songs have that wow factor from the first listen but all of them have pretty melodies and sometimes unexpected twists. And what can I say about her voice, just beautiful
It is nice to see her finding a musical identity outside of Kalafina, while still keeping that ethereal quality and not going too pop or in a very basic ballad direction.

mellody 30th March 2019 08:28 AM

It's a good thing if many people like it, but I'm not in that list. I knew she's always wanting to have a solo career but I guess it's not my taste at all. I mean, knowing what she did with Kajiura so far, this is somewhat bland. I only like the first track, and the rest are forgettable.

She sure does have a beautiful voice, but I'm stuck with her during this period. Check out the video under the spoiler box. (Even Keiko is doing amazing job as backing vocal doing her ad-libbing here)
Spoiler:

Since this is now a Yuki Kajiura thread, I recommend anyone's visiting this thread to watch this concert, it's a God-tier performance in my opinion.

Also, great news for anyone's looking for Keiko, she's back in the next Kajiura concert.
