Oh, #9... I wasn't expecting #1 or anything, but at least top 5? :(
I hope low sales are only because it was only released by some stores... we'll see
^^The release date is 3.28. Let's wait.
I thought it is great ;) and it's not even the official release date yet.
My prediction that it can sell around 10-15k...already really good.
i bet it's sales are even worse than Terminal's if it doesn't rise from here
It might be so. Maybe there should be a rise on the release date (maybe not), but it's apparently in stores 3/4 days before the official release date so I wonder if the people that were interested even know it's in stores. Even if not it's a re-release and even in ayu's peak the re-releases of poker face up to TO BE singles didn't sell much at all, unlike normal (new) singles. So I wouldn't expect any big numbers here anyway. It's like a re-cut release, kinda.
I actually would be surprised if it could reach the 10,000s+. |
it's a shame if this end up selling something like 4000 since this is great release (A BEST). it'd be awesome if this ended up selling like 100k but that's a most unrealistic dream of mine :no
why is it already out? i thought its release day was 28.3 ? no wonder that nobody knows (i hope so .... ) hah
Hmm...with today's rank position...I think my expectation is too high...maybe selling for about 5k is good.
I'm a little upset that they're already counting the sales before the actual release. I wasn't expecting marvelous numbers but it's probably at #25 right now because of the small amount of stores which are actually selling the CD.
Well, a release like this one, is re-selling what is available in other releases. I wouldn't buy it to be honest. Maybe people think like me.
Is the first Ayu album to flop BEFORE its release?
Winter Diary sold THAT much!? Hahaha
I don't understand why they're selling a few days before the

EDIT: Because A BEST was released on 28.3.2001... This is such a dumb idea though. Just put it out on 3/23 and call it an anniversary. |
Namie's re-releases sold like 1,000 copies each (while 2 of them sold 700 copies only) though they didn't included "new" material just a new 20th anniversary obi
A BEST is selling just fine |
Quote:
^They pretty much just wanna call her a flop even if she sells the expected.
Well considering it's a re-release with little reason to purchase, I'm not that surprised it's performing poorly. However, I thought Japan was crazy for these 'BEST' type albums regardless so I was expecting at least top 5 :/
^ They are, that's why A BEST had been slaying the digital sales for over 2 years... a re-release of an album so many people already have is a different thing though.
It's fine, I really don't have expectations about this release on the charts, it's a spacial re-release, it's not really something made to sell thousands of copies... |
Quote:
I wish they had made 2 deluxe editions for DVD and Blu-Ray individually rather than one high priced deluxe edition with both a DVD and Blu-Ray which makes no sense. :(
Quote:
If you have both a DVD & Blu-ray players then it's different though Anyway I'm not expecting A BEST -15th Anniversary Edition- to break new ground and sell a lot of copies . I just thought it's strange for Oricon to count a few days earlier than the release date |
Cheaper/easier/logistically to make one premium edition than two different SKU's.
Same happened with the Wagakki Band Live Premium Set (2 Blu-Ray, 3DVD, 2 CD) I see a lot more going this way. Every DVD that is sold, will also sell a Blu-Ray (vice-versa) and when you are printing a certain amount the cost is negligible. It's similar to a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack. |

This album is definitely a collector's item for true fans so it's not realistic to expect high sales.
Remember A BEST sold more than 4 million copies back in 2001 so most of her casual fans already own a copy and they are not willing to spend money just for remastered songs. People who want to get the CD can either download it in Recochoku or even go to a second-hand retail store and grab a copy for ¥500... If it manages to sell more than 10k I think it's fair enough. |
Quote:
avex should have included a pair of unreleased songs or rare demos.
^ right?? i think if they're gonna take money from fans like that with the deluxe version then i would have expected something rare in return
This is weird.... I walked past TSUTAYA yesterday 3.27 and I couldn't find the album but they have it on sale today 3.28 so I think the chart reflects like... Basically the few people
Who somehow found the albu hidden somewhere |
Quote:
Yea why are people surprised that a lazy rehash of old material is performing poorly on the charts?
Quote:
The charts didn't only include sales from a few shops that were selling the album beforehand, I'm pretty sure they also included all the preorders. So I don't expect sales to suddenly jump after the actual day of release.
It's at #2 today with 7,328 sold:
http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/d/2016-03-27/ |
wow great jump.
if Avex were selling exactly on 28/3, it probably was n.1 :( |
Well, I was wrong :laugh At least the sales are similar to Winter diary at this point
:woohoo::woohoo:
*praying for #1 tomorrow* |
There you go... everyone was complaining before it was even officially out.
It is more than I expected for a re-release tbh. |
YAS!!!!
who else will chart tomorrow?
Sandaime J Soul Brothers is the only threat this week & I have a feeling they will sell a lot for their new album as there're 5 editions :dead2
nice numbers =)
I don't think A BEST will sell more than those 7k in a single day, I think that was the peak...
Quote:
But yeah, they'll likely sell a lot, they're really popular lately and their last album was the #2 best selling of the year. |
Quote:
I think she will at least sell 4,000 copies which is the same amount of hardcore fans that bought Terminal |
oh wow...
then 10-15k is really possible...so happy for Ayu. |
Quote:
Woww.... Better than expected for re release album... I hope for another good sales for tomorrow...
Quote:
Glad it sold +7k, so in fact it rise today, let's see how will it do for the week :D |
Quote:
^ I think 10k is possible :yes
Lol and I expected 10,000 in total. Wow! So the low start was really because of the prior release in stores. I wonder if tomorrow will be the biggest day of sales then.
^ Those 7k are already relative to the first official day of the release, pre-orders and stuff. First day sales always start being counted on the day before of the release, which was today's numbers...
Usually the drop in Ayu's case is half of first day sales...so maybe tomorrow A-Best 15th anniv will sell arounf 3-4k...which is good.
Wow, I was hoping for 5k on the first week, so 7k already is amazing! :heart
Quote:
I was expecting 5k total xD
#4 total: ~12000 :D
It's at # 9 weekly with 9,413 sold.
Today it's at #4. #3 sold 3,2081. http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/d/2016-03-28/ |
So now with the new re-release A BEST sold 4,304,766 (oricon-wise).
not 10k weekly yet, but with today's sales it must have reached it.
15k total is possible :) |
This is such a great number! :banana2 Really happy for ayu
Too bad it didn't reach 10k in the first week but still good :yes
they already removed the dispaly for A Best from Tsutaya in Shibuya, it was literally there one day only...
It's just a coincidence but the the 15th Anniversary edition of Utada Hikaru's First love sold nearly the same amount in it's first week with the same position number lol
Quote:
So annoyed with how the release date was handled. |
For re-release stuff with zero new content. Almost 10k in the first week is really good. Lot of new artist will cry to get that much especially for female soloist.
Quote:
P.S. I am sooo happy with these numbers! |
At #20 today:
http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/d/2016-03-29/p/2/ |
It's still #4 on iTunes which isn't too bad. I think those 7k in one day wouldn't have happened without the music station appearance tho. And this is why she should throw her pride or whatever away and just promote. There might be people that rip apart everything she does but who cares if it results in promotion and sales. Her appearances always attract attention at the very least
I already satisfied with the first week number...so anything after that...I have no problem...A BEST already achieved the number that it's deserve...
Quote:
I don't think Ayu realizes how even a little selective promotion vastly improves her releases. It's not just about being a product, but about feedback and just general pride in her own work. I'd love for her to just do a week of serious promo for a new release. It doesn't have to be 6 performances each day, but at least show up on TV a few times in the weeks leading up to release. It shows people Ayu is proud of her current work and that she still wants to share the experience with fans. |
Well, according to Ayu's interviews she apparently doesn't really care about sales. And seeing the lack of promotion I believe this. I mean, obviously, she'd want to make some profit and probably would be happy if the release sold well, but it's not her goal.
Perhaps she actually wants to stay kinda out of spotlight. She's had enough of it already, and I can only imagine how hard it must be, so imo she deserves some rest and it's perfectly fine that she mostly works for herself because she enjoys it and for her fans. |
Well she's promoting A BEST through Instagram though lol.
I'm happy with the sales, 15K total is totally doable |
A BEST is at #17 today!
NICE JUMP!!!
Best album usually has more longevity than original album...so maybe it will floating around for a month at least... |
#18 today.
This gurllll
still on top 20! It's doing waay better than I expected.
At #19 for today:
http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/d/2016-04-01/p/2/ #3 sold 2,4k. (and woooow at Babymetal) |
Wow it's so steady! I thought it will glide this week.
#21 today!
A BEST is #34 today.
#3 place sold 6k |
It kinda perplexes me how low current sales can be... like even at the top 3 are only selling like 4k-6k :/
^maybe it'll make people realise ayu's low sales aren't all to do with people's opinion of her and more a symptom of the Japanese music industry in general.
Quote:
2nd Week Position: #16 Sales: 5,097 Total: 14,510 That's so good!! I didn't expect 5k at all this week! It'll be over 15k by next week :heart |
NICE! I'm so glad it's gonna reach 15,000 :yes
Whoa, I wasn't expecting that much either o-o
Oh wow...almost 15k...
If I read back my old comment..I said that 15k is already so good...then we can hope for 17.5k even 20k...which is really good...the cost production for this releases is so low...so we know that AVEX got lot of benefit out of this releases. |
just 6k to beat Utada!
Wow 15k is amazing!

Sorry, I have to point out that Ayu isn't entirely falling victim to the industry. She clearly doesn't feel she has anything left to prove, and it's shown in her work for awhile. I just wish she would take her career today as serious as she took her career 10 years ago. Edit: I think it's worth pointing out that A BEST -15th- doing as well as it is should point out that even a little promo by Ayu can go a long way. |
I don't know much about sales in the japanese industry other than Ayu's but from the (admittedly very little) I do know Namie and Kana are the exception, not the norm. Just like Taylor Swift manages to sell a million copies of her albums in U.S. even tho other artist don't manage to sell half of that anymore even when they are at their peak and selling out shows and whatnot.
Quote:
^she is not ordinary artist, only big names sell more than 20k like milliyah, kana, koda, etc. but there is more in the japanese industry than these big names, a bunch of new singers is struggling to sell more than 10k
I think Ayumi's had consistent criticism over the last five years that has contributed a lot to her sharp fall in sales:
* Working with producers who don't understand her sound very well. * Writing songs that don't build on her talent as a songwriter (i.e., low effort songs compared to her work from as recent as NEXT LEVEL or RnRC) * Under-promoting or not promoting her work * Not building on her prior work in a meaningful way (i.e., doing what she wants vs. at least taking into consideration what fans want to hear and see) Until 2010-2011, there were occasional criticisms of her actual work, but now it's an every-release bit. With Ls, people criticized the lackluster album tracks. With PQ, people criticized the amateur sound. With La, people criticized how boring the album was, and why she couldn't at least pick an original title. With Colours, it sounded like a blob of songs put together like a mix CD, no cohesion. With AO, people criticized the staleness of almost every track. Ayumi has also been highly criticized for low effort PVs since 2010. The last PVs she invested any significant work in were the PVs from Love songs and FIVE. So, I criticize because Ayumi is still not the norm, and she will never be "the norm" of Japanese Pop. She's just not giving it her best these days. And we all know she could do a little more to promote her releases, or maybe take an extra month to work on the next album, or maybe work a little harder to make her tours and CDLs different from each other. But she's been cutting corners for the last several years, and it's had an effect. Just like Koda has cut corners and been hurt by it as well. |
