DIR EN GREY ◙▒◙ the 2nd thread

There are not many Jrock fans at AHS, even I haven't been listening to it as much as I did before, but I thought it would be nice to (finally) open the 2nd Diru's thread... hopefully some people might check them out and fall in love with their music just like we did years ago. :mischief

ABOUT DIR EN GREY

Spoiler:
DIR EN GREY is a rock-metal band, formed in 1997 and went major in 1999 when they signed to FIREWALL DIV. They made their debut with the mini-album MISSA. Dir en grey was formed by former members of an indie band, La:Sadie's, formed in the late 1995/early 1996. After parting ways with La:Sadies' bassist, KISAKI, the remaining of the band recruitted Toshiya (previously in D+L) and together they form Dir en grey. KISAKI has since gone and be involved in several indies projects, including KISAKI Project, Syndrome, MIRAGE, and now Phantasmagoria.

The band released their first mini-album MISSA in 1997. In 1998, they became the first Japanese independent band to enter the singles top ten on the Oricon music charts following the release of singles "JEALOUS" and "-I'll-". Five subsequent singles, arranged and produced by X JAPAN co-founder YOSHIKI, were published during the first half of 1999, the band's first full-length album, GAUZE, followed. One of the shows in support for the album (filmed at the Osaka-jo Hall) would later become the first of several live concerts to be released on VHS and DVD.

Originally their style was visual-kei, but later on, they settle down for a vaguely visual style. They drastically change their look with the release of each album. Most of the outfits from their Visual Kei-era are extremely elaborate, and as Kaoru claims in an English interview for Newgrave gothic magazine, he made his outfits elaborate on purpose to make it more challenging for cosplayers, or a costume player, to imitate the look.

Maemi 15th July 2016 06:40 PM

Yeah, it took us 10 years :D lol

Miku 15th July 2016 06:44 PM

well, people around here is more into pop than rock I guess xD

Maemi 15th July 2016 06:49 PM

That's true :D Anyway, the preview of Utafumi doesn't sound bad, it's just that I couldn't get into their last two studio albums at all... I miss their sound before that.

Miku 15th July 2016 06:55 PM

Like I said in the 1st thread, hope for their upcoming album it will sounds like a mix of Vulgar and Withering to death ^^ When I heard the preview of Utafumi, I was thinking Vulgar and Withering to death. :)

Chibi-Chan 15th July 2016 07:39 PM

I think utafumi sounds a lot like something released around Vulgar.

I just listened to a couple of sounds from them, I didn't fall in fall unfortunately.
But I have to admit that everytime I see a cover artwork from them, I'm amazed ! They're truly gifted with their albums/singles' art ! =O

Is the song only that short or is it a short version? I was hoping that the radio edit might not be the full song. Edit: never mind, I just saw on fb that it's the promotion edit ver.
Besides that, it's such a typical Diru PV... xD

I hope you haven't listened to anything from DUM SPIRO SPERO or UROBOROS. Because I can't stand this two releases and totally get why one might not like them. I would recommend to listen to their albums Vulgar and Withering to death. as well as ARCHE.

Miku 21st July 2016 11:01 AM

^ I was thinking the same, was hoping the song to at least 3:30 or something :laugh ohh well :P

Chibi-Chan 21st July 2016 01:00 PM

^at fb they said the video is the promotion edit ver. So there is hope. :laugh
But it would be a shame if it's not even 3 minutes long.

Miku 21st July 2016 01:54 PM

well pretty much all of their PV's are pretty raw, many people doesn't have a strong stomach for those ^^

attractive nausea 21st July 2016 02:29 PM

The PV looks great but the song itself is so basic and weak, kinda disappointed, they can do way better.

Utafumi is so good, it's a shame it's so short. The new version of Kuukoku no kyouon feat. SUGIZO is so so so beautiful, I can't stop listening to it.
And I honestly wasn't expecting a remix like that, but it's damn great!

Btw, am I the only one who prefers Dir en grey stylized like that and whenever writing their name refuses to write it DIR EN GREY?

I still stylize their name Dir en grey even though I know they shifted to DIR EN GREY a long time ago. So you are definitely not alone.

I'm kinda sad they're not doing a US tour this year. Or if they still are, it's gonna be on very short notice. Meh.

Chibi-Chan 21st April 2018 02:08 AM

I was at Diru's Tokyo show on Wednesday. The light show was beautifully made and all in all the concert was very atmospheric. It was great to the them live again after five years. It was the 5th time I saw them live, but the first time in Japan.
What I find a little "disappointing", in lack of a better word, is that I find their songs to sound all the same the last few years and that I can't say which song is which. It's as if they're only producing this atmospheric stuff which is good, but I would love to have an album like six Ugly or Withering to death again.

Oh and their fans are so aggressive. -.- I'm just 158cm and even in Japan I can't really see anything at concerts. A guy hit me with his elbow a few times on my head and the woman in front of me was sticking her butt out so that I would make room for her. But people were pushing like hell and there was no room for me left and it's not like I wanted to cuddle with anyone there. Since I wasn't moving away she moved her elbow back in my direction but with such strenght and directly into my breasts that it hurt so much that I was crying. She wouldn't take her elbow back even though I tried to talk to her and so I was moving my arms to her back so that her elbow wouldn't hurt my breasts, or at least just a littlle, it was still hurting. Then she had the nerve to turn around and tell me I was hurting her.
I was so upsett I was crying again and she still was hurting me. She stopped after a few songs because the guy next to her moved closer and she couldn't stick her arm out like this anymore.
Kind of ruined the concert for me.

Maemi 23rd April 2018 06:52 PM

^ omg that sounds terrible, sorry you had to experience that! I hate aggressive crowds...

attractive nausea 23rd April 2018 08:11 PM

^^ Wow, i feel sorry for you :(

I have listened to the radio version of their new song, i can't say i don't like it, but... Yeah, their songs are so similar now, there is no fun anymore. Utafumi was released almost two years ago and there is no change.
I feel that UROBOROS was a really massive sound change and since then they just decided to keep that sound, only changing it a little bit with each new album, but nothing groundbreaking. From Gauze to UROBOROS each new album had a really different sound to me, and now they're not evolving anymore and heck, it's been 10 years since UROBOROS! I'm kinda bored with them now.

Thank you both!

Yeah I agree, their music became kind of boring. Back then they were always evolving and now they're stuck with one sound since ten years. I check out every new release, since I really loved them as a teenager and they still have a place in my heart, but I can't say I care much for their current releases. I liked Utafumi though, but I fear the new single will sound waaaaay to siniliar.

I don't remember even one song from the last two albums lol I loved everything before them, it's weird how you love a band during one period of your life and then you're like meh.

I don't know where this mistake comes from, I saw it a few times on the net now, but the new single isn't written in rômaji as "koumuru" but "kaburu". 被る is also on their official website written as kaburu, when you switch to English. Furthermore, even though 被る can be both read as koumuru and kaburu, koumuru means getting something or another meaning would be being haunted. Whereas kaburu means wearing something, like a hat or a mask.

Hey I'm recently getting into D.E.G. what would your recconmendations be regarding an album to start off with? Currently I'm obsessed with the songs "Ain't Afraid to Die" (old I know) and "Vinushka".

^Personally my favourite Diru album is Withering to death. I really love this one and consider it a masterpiece. Vulgar is also great and I like six Ugly too. Also songs I listen to again and again are I'll, Cage and Garden, because I like how old school they are.
Other than that I also enjoyed THE MARROW OF A BONE. Sadly, after this release, I didn't enjoy any of their albums. If you're into this kind of metal, you may like those albums, the style they atoppted ten years ago just isn't for me. But I would recommend the second disc of their self cover album THE UNRAVELING, the new version of MACABRE as well as the unplugged versions are great!
But I have high hopes for the new album, since I really enjoyed Utafumi (recommend to download the single, especially because of the track they did with SUGIZO, which is also on the single and might be one of the most beautiful songs they ever did), as well as Ranunculus, which was beautiful the two times I heard it live.

I had the opportunity to listen to "Withering to Death" yesterday and while it isnt what I normally listen to, it definitely is a gem I also ventured into "Uroboros" but it was a bit too intense. Thank you for this recommendation (it only took 11 years to finally get into Dir 🤣🤣) I think what also makes it great is that they are so active after so long between touring in Japan and the Europe/North America. I dont feel that normal customary burn of being a Jmusic fan and feeling like you'll get to see the artist unless you go through some immense process and loss of money. I cant wait for them to get back to the U.S.

Chibi-Chan 5th September 2018 03:17 AM

^if they ever come near you and you have the opportunity to see them live, I recommend it. But don't travel for them to another city or something. If you didn't like UROBOROS, there isn't much for you at their concerts. I listen to Diru since I was 12 years old and I loved them deeply. They still have a place in my heart and I saw them twice here in Tokyo, since I'm here anyway atm, but I wouldn't travel for them anymore. I did this in the past in Germany a lot, but nowadays they only play songs that were released from UROBOROS onwards or new versions of old songs that now sound like stuff from later in their career.
If you prefer their old stuff over their new stuff, like me, I fear there isn't much for you at their concerts. =(

tomiko8 6th September 2018 01:34 PM

^ it is kind of a shame that they dont appear to play anything older in their discography outside of Japan. I had the opportunity once again(dont know where all this time is coming from) to listen to "Macabre" last night and it's easily one of my favorite albums period, but then again I shouldn't be surprised because for whatever reason early 00's late 90's music has always appealed to me (something was in the water around that time I'm convinced) Also, it's not so much that I disliked UROBOROS but more I have to be in that mind space to listen to it in its entirety and be prepared for a potential headache . This wouldn't turn me away from going to one of their concerts even if it's for the experience. I have to say though the fandom seems a little intense. They would put some of these new kpop fandoms to shame with some of the antics they pull, including the story you shared earlier.

Chibi-Chan 7th September 2018 02:56 AM

^I am out of the fandom for quite some years now and only knew the German community, but then again German teen fan communities regarding anything that has to do with Japan are crazy anyway. :laugh So I have no idea how crazy their fans are or not.
But yeah, if you to a concert in Japan, I definitely recommend a ticket with a seat. :laugh
