ʕ•̫͡•ʔ About Hikki
Spoiler:
Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter under the Emi Music Japan label. Utada is one of Japan's most successful artists of all time. Her debut album First Love is the #1 best selling album in Asian music history with over 7.65 million copies sold in Japan alone. In total she has sold over 38,000,000 million records in Japan, and 3 of her albums are in the Top 10 best-selling albums of all time in Japan (#1, #4, #8), making her one of the most successful and popular singers in J-pop history. Utada is bilingual as she was raised in both New York and Tokyo. She is also known in the west under her English language project name 'Utada', most famous for singing the Kingdom Hearts theme song, "Hikari / Simple And Clean" and the Kingdom Hearts II theme song, "Passion / Sanctuary". Initially, Utada's music had a heavy R&B style to it, but later her music progressed to a more pop / experimental tone. Her distinct R&B sound brought her much attention with her first release in Japan, "Automatic / time will tell". Utada was married to director Kiriya Kazuaki, who directed the movie CASSHERN, but in March 2007 the couple split.

On August 9, 2010, Utada announced plans to go on indefinite hiatus following the release of "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2", her second compilation album. On November 24, 2010, "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2" was released. It debuted atop the Oricon charts once again. It has also been anounced that Utada has severed ties with Island Def Jam, who releases her English language works. She has secured a global contract with EMI Music. Upon returning from her hiatus, all her future releases will be under the name Utada Hikaru regardless of the country of release.

Utada Hikaru has been deemed the Most Influential Japanese Artist of the past decade (2000-2010) by Japan Times.

Only a few more weeks until we get to hear "Anata ga Matteru" I'm curious to know how heavily her vocals will be featured.

Just watched 忘却 and cried. Lol

I'm in an emotional state, but that type of art is so rare now in jpop. Brought a lot of feelings out.

Has anyone posted the Michi instrumental? It's not from a karaoke place (at least it doesn't sound like it, it sounds like the same exact song, just with no vocals). I was so glad to find this!

ahtka-chan 2nd February 2017 08:45 PM

^It doesn't really sound like the original one. The beginning is quite different, and there's a melody guide in the background if you notice. Probably it's from a karaoke or an instrumental shop.

That Boukyaku video is ...interesting. What are the things that we see pulsating at the beginning of the clip? Looks like bodily function but what do I know.

Utada is...changing labels.

Quote:

Hikaru Utada announces label transfer
http://aramajapan.com/news/hikaru-ut...ransfer/70840/

Through her official website, Hikaru Utada has announced that with her Universal Music Group contract expiring, she will be moving to Sony Music Japan. Utada was originally signed to Toshiba EMI that was renamed EMI Music Japan following the selling of their remaining stake to EMI in 2007. In 2013, the label was absorbed into Universal Music Japan. In her message, Utada emphasizes that it is her first label transfer as an artist.

She expresses her gratitude to the EMI and Universal staff who have been involved in her activities up until this moment and says that she wants to keep tryin’ new things which means that a new record by her might come out sooner than we expect.
:shakehead

Umm, yeah. Sony. In my opinion, that's something I'm NOT going to look forward to. My main issue is their restrictive YouTube policy...

Any thoughts? For me, not something to look forward to. I'm surprised at this news, but what's even shocking is that she's moving to Sony. I understand how Toshiba EMI got into Universal first from Toshiba selling its music label business, then Universal pretty much buys out EMI...but Utada moving to Sony? WHAAAT????? We got caught off-guard with this! :O

Diva_br 9th February 2017 06:31 AM

I'm also disappointed for that decision but I also think (or want to believe) that Utada knows what she's doing moving to Sony. I would have preferred her to end up in Warner, but well.

bluegie 9th February 2017 09:03 AM

I don't really understand as well. Sony jp isn't a really good company IMO, as they don't seem to really care about their artists.
I hope she has total control of her music. I'm sure she will be, as her dad is her manager.

DeepRiver 9th February 2017 10:05 AM

Sony confirmed that she will release new material this year. :yes

depends? They have a policy of releasing stuff no matter what, resulting in tons of best album, but I feel like artist like Kana Nishino and Mika Nakashima are quite regular doing stuff.

oaristos 9th February 2017 01:17 PM

Yeah, Sony is terrible but she's a huge artist, I don't think they're planning on messing her career up. She is literally the best-selling solo artist right now, I'm sure they're going to at least manage her well. I'm excited for new music this year! Glad to know Utada is not going to disappear for a few more years after Fantôme.

My feeling towards Sony Japan is that they don't really know how to promote their artists, and lots of once popular artists went to the rock bottom there. Mika is one of the good examples. She used to be really popular but her height only last about one album (LOVE). After LOVE her popularity started declining. Maybe problem lies within her (I dunno... :/), but Sony didn't really do much to stop the decline. Other examples including CHEMISTRY, ORANGE RANGE, Ken Hirai, etc. Again, probably their declines had nothing to do with Sony, but I felt like the company could have done something to avoid further decline.

Anyway, since this is hikki we're talking about, I don't think Sony would be messing her career around. And I'm pretty sure her dad will look after (as we know, her dad is powerful enough to affect the decisions).

ahtka-chan 9th February 2017 02:29 PM

She is taking some of her core staff with her and considering she's huge, she'll probably have lots of freedom to manage her career whatever way she wants. And it's Hikki we are talking about, she doesn't release new stuff that often, so there's no much to mess up.

And apart from cardboards and some weird tie-ins, Universal didn't really promote that well Fantôme. The only thing I really liked was those marketing stuff from the CD stores, but I think it's was their own initiative...

voltron 9th February 2017 02:36 PM

I wonder if the move has anything to do with her US career. Since her US albums were also UMG, right? Maybe she doesn't want to be obligated to release through them if she ever does another English language album.

ayu_ready? 9th February 2017 05:12 PM

what news!I wonder if her release pattern might change

YUKARI 9th February 2017 06:00 PM

yeah, I wonder what changes with transfer to Sony. though something tells me that everything will be the same haha

Hmmn, I agree with you somehow. Even back in the old days Toshiba didn't do really well on promoting hikki (If you did anticipate in Distance vs A BEST battle, you would know what I mean).

So I guess it doesn't really matter which music company she's in, as long as she can control her career by herself (or her dad helps her whatsoever).

sora-kara 12th February 2017 01:33 AM

this...an interesting decision...
sony seems to nit care as much, and maybe that will give her a freedom/lack of pressure that could be suited to her creative style.

hahaha i dont know!
hopefully she'll still be able to release as she likes, with her father to keep her safe and strong as an artist.

tokyoxjapanxfan 12th February 2017 02:46 AM

It's rare for major artists to make label changes so I wonder what the major reason was~ Sony must've offered something really good...

thinkingoutloud89 12th February 2017 01:16 PM

^she herself probably. She said she wants to try out new things and a label-change is like a fresh start. (I read that in an interview)

orbitalaspect 12th February 2017 07:42 PM

I'm glad she's doing this before the new theme for Kingdom Hearts 3. I think with Sony on board, we're much more likely for Utada to have another Sanctuary/Flavor of Life size hit later this year or next. :)

Indeed. There are not many well-known Japanese artists switching labels as far as I notice. Is there any negative outcome so far in Japan??

Baco__ 14th February 2017 08:04 AM

Guys, can you listen to Utada through any of the streaming apps like Spotify or Deezer? Spotify tells me there are plenty of her Japanese albums there, but they're all blocked for my country and the ones I've tried to VPN lol (Brazil, Japan, US and Canada).

oaristos 14th February 2017 03:42 PM

^ I can only listen to Exodus and This Is The One on Spotify (US). I'm not sure if her Japanese discography is available in any streaming platform.

Baco__ 14th February 2017 05:21 PM

We can't even listen to TITO here in Brazil lol
It just occurred to me that maybe someone uploaded her albums from a private collection... And Spotify is listing them just because T.T

Cause if you Google Utada Hikaru Spotify you'll see at least both of hers Japanese single collections, covers and all.

DeepRiver 14th February 2017 06:02 PM

that could be the reason ... because Hikki doesn't stream her music ... you have to buy her stuff ...

Baco__ 14th February 2017 09:16 PM

I'm pretty sure this is not a decision that comes from her, she seems pretty opened to whatever way she has to spread her word #godblessthegoddess I was really hoping for at least Fantôme =( maybe things will change after changing labels?

DeepRiver 15th February 2017 12:34 AM

I am pretty sure it IS her decision ... And it IS the reason Fantome sold 650 k...

ahtka-chan 15th February 2017 02:00 PM

I don't think Fantôme isn't on Spotify or Deezer just because she wants the physical version to sell. None of her japanese discography is on those websites, and considering japanese people don't really use those services, I think it's a lack of motivation from the label to include those albuns on streaming. Many avex artists also don't have songs on Spotify.

Maybe with the move to Sony we'll get them (although I guess her catalogue still belongs fo UMG).

thinkingoutloud89 15th February 2017 05:30 PM

Spotify just recently ventured into the Japanese market with the goal to add new artists over the course of 2017.

What? This doesn't even make sense, you know? First of all, oricon doesn't count overseas sales anymore, so would Utada, an artist who thinks about her overseas fans fans, be just thinking about charts? I don't think so. Second of all: all the artist says an album is not available on a particular country or music app because of the company, not because they want it or not lol

Just for the record: Oh Land Wishbone is only available in the US, even though she is from Denmark and all of her other albums are available everywhere else. So it's on the label we have to blame, not the artist lo

EDIT: about changing labels and what it could possibly mean for her catalogue to be available online, well... Madonna has all her discography available even though a great part of her discography was released under Warner (and now she's interscope). I don't know how it works, but if there's a will, there's a way haha

thinkingoutloud89 16th February 2017 06:39 PM

^Madonna owns her music, but Utada does too

ahtka-chan 16th February 2017 08:56 PM

^I'm not really sure about that. When she was releasing TiTO she had to ask Disney for permission to release both versions of Sanctuary on her album.

she looks old in that picture

congrats to sell 1m copies

Baco__ 3rd April 2017 08:58 PM

What? She looks amazing <3 you all = blind

chocopockymaster 3rd April 2017 09:31 PM

Not a fan of the hair tbh

kotora 3rd April 2017 09:39 PM

her new hair makes her ear like monster big

oaristos 3rd April 2017 10:32 PM

She looks good, but I have to admit that hair is not the best. I think her hair during the ULTRA BLUE era is still my favorite.

Congratulations for selling 1 million! That's a big feat, and she totally deserves that because Fantôme is an amazing album. :) I'm glad we're probably getting new music soon.

voltron 3rd April 2017 10:53 PM

Even though most of her music post-Deep River hasn't really resonated with me (maybe like 10 songs total), it's great to see a female veteran of the industry smash everything to pieces with such success.

I don't care for the hair either, but I always preferred her with long hair. And, to be honest, other than the videos she made with her ex-husband, visuals and aesthetics have never really been her thing, so it doesn't bother me too much.

mi|kshake 3rd April 2017 11:20 PM

Wow, 1 million copies, that's amazing!! I can't believe a female solo artist has been able to sell that much nowadays.

Getting TITO vibes from the hair.

But not complaining, keep'em coming.

But then, sometimes she just released her stuff very quick without any notice at all (e.g., from Distance to DEEP RIVER, or from ULTRA BLUE to HEART STATION). I guess this time she's gonna do the same thing. Have a good feeling on it! Deep down I wanna cry of joy because I don't need to wait for another 8 years...

Violently Happy 4th April 2017 02:11 AM

I probably have horrible taste, because I actually don't mind her hair. I think short hair fits Utada, however I would have loved if she kept her long hair from the beginning of the Fantome era. She looked absolutely gorgeous when we got those promo pics announcing her comeback.

amorphose 4th April 2017 03:56 PM

I don't mind the hair either. I didn't like the short hair the first time she pulled it back in the day, but since then it has grown on me a lot. I'm really excited to hear whatever she is working on now.

EndOfTheWorld 4th April 2017 05:04 PM

For a minute I thought that was a picture from the Heart Station era that I had not seen before.:laugh

DeepRiver 4th April 2017 09:58 PM

Fantome sold nearly 2000 copies in week 27!

ohsixthirty 4th April 2017 10:16 PM

Her hair can look like whatever if she just continues to release music!

mi|kshake 4th April 2017 11:12 PM

My favourite short hairstyle from her is Wait & See!

This is actually so true. I don't care what she really looks like as long as she's gonna release something this year.

I know! They should give Ayu one of these for the combined sales of all her releases since FIVE. :D

Hilarious jokes aside, have you guys heard Hikki's cover of Shiina Ringo's Marunouchi SADISTIC?

It's really nice.

DeepRiver 1st May 2017 07:21 PM

Hikki's father twittert a few minutes ago that there will be some big news for 2017/18 announced this summer!

I think there will be a new single in 2017 and a tour in early 18!

dreamalley 1st May 2017 09:15 PM

If she does a tour the tickets are going to sell out in seconds...

Gubsi 1st May 2017 10:36 PM

well with the news containing 2017 AND 2018 i bet this is about a new single and a tour...
wish she would go on worldwide tour again.
would love to see her live again after london 2010 ❤

ahtka-chan 2nd May 2017 04:27 PM

^She never went on a worldwide tour. At least, I don't consider doing bar tours in the USA and in one city in Europe a 'world tour".

EndOfTheWorld 2nd May 2017 11:48 PM

I tried to go to see her in New York that time but I couldn't because of school and being too young to go on my own anddd because it was sold out.:rolleyes:dead2
Utada tours are such a rare occasion.

Miduhyo 3rd May 2017 12:12 AM

^ I bought tickets to see her in Cali but I got snowed in the weekend I was supposed to leave. Still have the tickets, though. All these years later though I'm still bummed I couldn't go just because of weather.

Don't get me wrong, Mr. Follow Your Dreams, I'd love a proper world tour from her, with concerts including the whole Latin America and Oceania.

DeepRiver 3rd May 2017 04:24 PM

http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lq...7m05o1_400.gif

btw ... I think it will be a japan only tour. not a world, universe whatever tour!

Baco__ 4th May 2017 12:32 PM

Like, really... It's called world tour because she is actuality leaving her one country, for God's sake lol no one would mind calling their own tours "JAPAN, USA AND ONE NIGHT ONLY IN LONDON TOUR" nor "Asia, North America and Europe Tour" lmao we all want a world tour that actually includes other parts of the world, but, really, if an artist can only call their world tours if they include all countries in all continents I doubt there was ever a true worldwide tour... Ever lol whole Africa is hardly a destination for worldwide tours for example and there's no one calling their tours "AMERICAS, EUROPE, ASIA AND OCEANIA TOUR", so just chill.

dreamalley 4th May 2017 06:18 PM

I really want her to do a concert in Europe soon-ish.

Come on, she lives in London. She could just go around the corner and sing.

Hikki is like that ultra rare Pokemon that everyone wants to see and yet no one has the chance.

mi|kshake 4th May 2017 10:56 PM

Well chuffed as I bought a secondhand, first press edition of Deep River that arrived today! My old copy is kinda old and bashed looking (although still works perfectly) but now I have the picture disc and glossy booklet! (I think the version I had before maybe from Thailand and just used normal paper). Now all of her albums I own have glossy booklets.

EndOfTheWorld 5th May 2017 12:44 AM

I would like it if Utada did a livestream concert like years ago but perform more than 3 songs.:laugh
It would be a great happy medium for worldwide fans.

ahtka-chan 5th May 2017 03:07 AM

^The final date of WILD LIFE was livestreamed. It was quite nice, as far as I remember.

I missed out on that. I still haven't seen the complete Wild Life live. I keep meaning to buy the blu-ray but the price remains high.
She must be planning some kind of tour. It's been such a long time and her return was so successful.
Who knows, perhaps she will have international dates since Fantome charted so well outside of Japan.

dreamalley 6th May 2017 11:18 AM

I didn't like the Wild Life live. I can't really explain why.

For me Utada United was the best live she ever did.

bluegie 6th May 2017 01:45 PM

I'm the opposite, I didn't like Utada United, but I love Wild Life. Probably because I watched the live stream and I was so moved by the concert. If she's going to do a tour in Japan this year, I hope she'll do a live stream again.

As far as I remember, Single Collection Vol. 1's booklet is not glossy right? I'm too lazy to grab the cd out :P.

Miduhyo 6th May 2017 10:57 PM

I really did not like Wild Life. I was so happy with the song choices and I loved how the stage was laid out and I did very appreciate the live stream, but I never did finish watching it and I don't have any intention to.

UU is life, however. It's one of my go-to concerts when I'm bored and have nothing else to do.

kotora 6th May 2017 11:02 PM

What is Wild Life?

Singing in the farm like PASSION PV?

WILD LIFE was a special two day (three day?) concert she did before entering on hiatus. It's really nice, but I do prefer Utada United, even though I wish she had put more focus on ULTRA BLUE there for the setlist.

It was basically a Singles Collection Vol. 1 live.

bluegie 10th May 2017 04:58 AM

I thought Kotora was joking... or not? :shakehead

Andrenekoi 14th May 2017 11:15 PM

^Isn't Kotora always joking? :P

I really liked UU, but haven't watched it in years and don't know how much I would like it now. WL, I had huge problems with her vocals on the live stream... The dvd version with the vocal corrections is nice and I do love the whole "coming as a popstar, leaving as a common person" concept of the show, but I admit I find it hard to watch as a whole on one sit.
