And moving this reply over to the new thread.

Errr, saying I didn't think she's not as passionate about music in general as some other artists and therefore it makes sense that she would want to retire is not unkind at all. I'm simply stating an opinion based on information we have gotten from the artists themselves (Namie has always said she will retire one day, Ayu has always said her life would lose meaning without music).

And I'm a humongous Namie fan, so there were certainly no mean intentions with simply stating that.

lfe. 22nd September 2017 03:52 PM

Love Story should be #1.

thinkingoutloud89 22nd September 2017 03:57 PM

^no. I mean I don't hate that song but it is so overrated. But i kinda dig Japans reaction to her news. Almost all her albums are high in the itunes charts aswell. But all of them seem to forget SUITE CHIC lol.

How do the other charts in look? Is she in Oricon again. Seems like she is getting a lot of farewell money too.

Just You and I entered the daily charts again (#10), as well as Ballada and _genic (#16 and 17) for albums.

Bad Wolf 22nd September 2017 04:05 PM

I'm sad to hear she's leaving, but if it's something she wants to do then by all means, I wish her the best. She was one of my favorite Jpop acts and had her own unique style.

And daaaaaaaaamn @ those charts lol

The best album is going to be insane when it comes out. The price is reasonable for the amount of content to....breaking a million or at least getting close I think is going to be in the cards.

Here's hoping since this is her last year she will actually be doing tv promotion!

Hm, would like to see it, but with the current physical market a million is pretty much out of reach.
There wasn't a million selling album in like ...2 or 3 years?
The market isn't like that anymore.

WHERE'S HER STUFF ON SPOTIFY THO??? We need it before she retires for good ):

There've been a few million selling albums in the last couple of years, so they do still happen. They are just rare as heck these days. I may have overshot the runway with a million, but I think it will get close. This isn't just a best album; it's a retirement album, which in Japan historically have sold huge. And even just her original albums are still selling several hundred thousand copies (true Genic was her lowest, but even that still sold over 250,000; and Uncontrolled in 2012 sold half a million by itself). Plus it has actual value to it as it not only has new songs, but will also be containing, I assume, many singles that have not been put on any album yet.

Actually, I think I just reconvinced myself. lol. It's going to hit a million.

I just checked - the last million selling album was by AKB48 in 2014.
Even with Namie declining in sales again the last years, this will for sure be better than _genic without a doubt, better than Ballada (500k) probably. But I don't believe it will happen more than that.

And btw. I can't get it out of my head, but the title of the new best 'Finally'...sounds so much like 'Finally I can retire!'. xD
Considering those rumours, that she had a 25 year contract ending this year and wasn't able before...hm.

KarenPang 22nd September 2017 04:35 PM

I think you forget that SMAP's final best album release SMAP 25 Years sold more than 1 million copies in less than a month

It's still charting/selling on Oricon as of now & it was released last Dec

http://tieba.baidu.com/p/5331013080?pn=2

Same with Finally , SMAP 25 years was reasonably priced - 4,212 Yen for 3 CDs regular & limited versions

haraiso 22nd September 2017 04:38 PM

Just ordered fanspace editions of all 3 versions! WHEW. That was a punch in the wallet!! The covers better be gorgeous!

And it's so great to see how she's completely dominating the iTunes charts.

Truly a #queen.

I posted this in the previous thread

Toggle Singapore wrote this among other details that already been mentioned

Quote:

While the 40-year-old singer did not disclose the reason behind her decision, some guessed that it was because she wanted to take her relationship with rumoured music producer boyfriend Nishi Shigehiro to the next level. Others speculated that it was because she wanted to live a normal life now after being in the public eye for so long.

This could be because she had mentioned previously in an interview in February that she wanted a slower paced life when she was older. Japanese media outlet Tokyo Sports reported that she has been very busy in her career since young and yearned for a normal life.

any truth to what was written especially the 1st paragraph ?

Arashi's Japonism sold 1.2 million in 2015/2016. Also, the SMAP album as mentioned by Karen. Honestly, I see Namie's going the way that SMAP's album did. Both artists were such a huge part of Japanese culture. It will EASILY surpass Ballada's sales. That's like not even a question in my mind. Japan LOVES nostalgia and all of her fans from the 90s would be in their 30s and 40s now, who likely have not bought all her releases post 2000s and they now have money to burn.

Oh yeah, I forgot! :laugh
I'm rooting for Namie, I just don't expect it.
Boybands are still popular, female solos not so much anymore. Let's see what nostalgia can do!

lfe. 22nd September 2017 04:50 PM

Honestly sales could go in any direction because solo artists and groups are not really comparable since the Japan market for solo artists has diminuished over the years.

I think these itunes charts are a pretty well indicator of how much she will be missed. I guess a million will even be an easy feat. Namie will probably get BEST FICTIONS sales.

Yeah, I mean, I don't want to get my hopes up too far, but this is what I honestly am kinda thinking. I don't know if it will hit best fiction status though (I don't think even SMAPs album did that). But she is just so generally well liked in Japan that even casual fans who don't normally buy her albums will likely purchase a final best. The key is she didn't just announce a hiatus or something. She announced a full retirement along the lines of Yamaguchi Momoe.

We will see how it goes, but I'm excited to start tracking the sales week to week. :)

thinkingoutloud89 22nd September 2017 05:39 PM

I've been listening to her all week (even before the news because of the concert lol) and she has so money gems I still love to death and listen to and regular basis - I have enough music from her for my whole life. And I'm also looking forward to all future compilation/remix/tribute/collection/remastered albums lol.

AyuHamasaki01 22nd September 2017 05:54 PM

I really hope 'Finally' won't be her last album. I really hope she'll release another album with all new songs next year as a goodbye.

lfe. 22nd September 2017 05:56 PM

She can still do the Olympics if people demand enough.

As much as I would like to see Arashi or Smap, they don't exactly have the worldwide appeal of other artists. Don't know how we will dodge the AKB bullet though since their producer is the one doing the ceremonies :rolleyes.

Utada has a strong shot in particular because of her English. Namie would be amazing if she's willing to come back for a one-off. I also think Yoshiki and/or X-Japan have a decent shot at being involved; at the same time though Japan is so insular that they might not even be able to realize which artists have the most international appeal honestly..

I thought they said there was still going to be one last studio album before she’s done. I don’t think this best is gonna qualify considering it’ll be out in November and she’s not bidding a farewell for a while, there’s plenty of time for her to dish out a couple more singles and another album.

NintendoHTF1242 22nd September 2017 06:15 PM

The amount of disrespect towards Love Story...

I don’t follow the J-Pop scene anymore but saw this story pop up on Reddit. I was shocked, but happy with Namie’s decision. She can finally just live her life. God knows she has enough money to do whatever she wants. I will definitely grab the CD edition of the best-of album. Haven’t bought a CD since Fantôme so I’m excited. Best of wishes to Namie.

My first song was HIDE & SEEK when it first came out... what an incredible journey it has been. Truly an end of an era.

Why should there be another album, when there are 7 new songs on the best?

JackieRos 22nd September 2017 06:22 PM

She’s had a 26 year singing career with so much hardship in the beginning including the
murder of her mother. She could’ve quit after that but she decided to come back better than
ever, if that’s not passionate about music then I don’t know what is.
I’m not even sure why she needs to be compared to other artists....

It’s not nice that there’s already rumors about why she’s retiring, can’t it be because she
just wants to rest and if she wants to marry or whatever is that so wrong?

That's what I thought at first too, but considering the best album will have 7 new tracks, I'm thinking this might be it.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but no, she probably couldn't have quit even if she wanted to. She was under contract.

And she's always talked about retiring and living a quiet life at some point. I'll miss her, but she deserves this if it's what she wants. :yes

I don't think anyone has said that that's wrong? Everyone's been super supportive.

Toniayu123 22nd September 2017 07:02 PM

If there isn't going to be another original album from her making that thing called _genic her last album, I hope those 7 new songs are pure gold. But there is plenty of time from now to next year's september so I think we'll definitely be getting new music.

SunshineSlayer 22nd September 2017 10:32 PM

News report about the retirement announcement with footage from the Okinawa show and celebrity comments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2wFUL0qK7M

There's been lots of news specials; some even half an hour long. Common themes among them are that even though she is 40, it is too soon and sudden, her huge impact on fashion and other female artists that came after, how impressive her concerts are with no MCs and nonstop dancing for 2 and a half hours in stiletto's etc, and that they think this will be a total retirement; no coming back. Also only artist to have a million seller across 3 decades, and that the timing coincides with her son turning 20, her debut day, and turning 40 and in that way, it really is like a syncronous timing with meaning to it and that may be why she made her decision that it's time to move to the next part of her life.

They are all saying she will be doing an Asian tour. Also, that she needs to perform on Kohaku.

Miduhyo 22nd September 2017 11:41 PM

It's nice to see everyone so supportive about this. I'm starting to get over the grieving, slowly, and starting to realize that this is really good for her. I hope we hear from her from time to time, just a little head's up on her facebook or something, to let us know how she's doing. I know she's a really private person and so I'm not quite sure about the likelihood of that, but it'd still be nice. I wonder if she'll get a haircut. O.O

aloopy 22nd September 2017 11:50 PM

Damn I knew it was coming eventually but this soon and sudden?... I was expecting a hiatus or something, but retire? I was not prepared.
It's definitely an end of an era, not only for her but for us fans as well. Makes me sad to think about that we'll never get new music from her again. But I am really happy for Namie, I hope she can live the life she wants.

But yeah if she could post a few updates once in a while on her social media, so we know she's still alive, would be great. But knowing Namie she's probably gonna vanish completely.

I feel really fortunate that I was able to see her live a couple of times, and I will do everything I can to see the last tour, no matter the costs lol. (tickets are gonna be sooo difficult to get though I assume...)

cosmicfirefly 23rd September 2017 12:15 AM

Wow I didn't expect to read this news, but I can't say I'm surprised. She's been doing music for so long, and while I'd hoped she would continue for a long time I'm glad she's leaving while on top. She was the first J-pop artist I was introduced to though so I'll definitely miss not getting new music from her, but I'm excited for the upcoming releases.

I would have preferred she announce it after her 30th anniversary but it is what it is. We just have to accept it and try to move on.

I'll miss the music, but I'm also happy for Namie. She's a true legend and contributed so much to modern JPop that she'll never be forgotten. :heart

I really wanted to travel to Japan sometime and see her in concert before she retired, but I never thought it would be this soon. Now I don't know if I'll even be able to since this farewell tour is probably going to be *crazy*. I wonder if they'll extend it since it's likely to sell out at every stop? :dead2

kotora 23rd September 2017 05:34 AM

Joke aside, i would be curious to have a picture of her from time to time to see how she will still look like in her 20's when she will reach 50 yo

I respect her decision, she will leave with a glorious and successful image that people will always remember.
I'm sure the new best album will be at least (if not more) as successful as BEST FICTION.

I yesterday thought how old her son was. Shiina Ringo's first child must be around the same age now, too.
Time flies.

Also, because the thing about Namie not being passionate keeps creeping up, I'll repeat myself from the last thread:
That's not really what it means, though. It's a matter of priorities. To Ayu music IS life. Didn't Hikki have a hiatus of like 7 years? That seems to be unthinkable of for Ayu.
To Namie music might just not be a top priority. That doesn't mean that she doesn't put her all into it. It's just not her raison d'etre like it is for Ayu.

By the way, to all Namie fans, what would be the essential things to get for a casual listener? ^^

freedreamer 23rd September 2017 10:32 AM

Haha great that you mention this, I'm currently making playlists as crazy and thought it would be nice to share different playlists - since, well, we kinda have all but 7 songs and can mix things up.

But first to answer your question: As for tours, I guess it is personal liking but I always love So Crazy Tour the most. As for albums, I don't think you can go wrong with anything. Milestones would be SWEET 19 BLUES, 181920, Queen of Hip-Pop, BEST FICTION.

Now, what songs should be on an "Essential Namie Amuro" Playlist. Most of the songs I put on are not personal favorites, which was really hard to pass by lol:

1. TRY ME
2. Body Feels EXIT
3. SWEET 19 BLUES
4. CAN YOU CELEBRATE?
5. RESPECT the POWER of LOVE
6. NEVER END
7. Uh Uh...
8. So Crazy
9. GIRL TALK
10. BABY DONT CRY
11. NEW LOOK
12. WILD
13. Love Story
14. TSUKI
15. Golden Touch
16. Mint
17. HERO

I don't think such a playlist should exceed 20-25 songs. What ya thinking?

I have no idea why "PARADISE TRAIN" is doing so well right now. I guess because she performed it at Okinawa? Otherwise, it's the worst single the SUPER MONKEY'S released.

Darkifrit 23rd September 2017 12:09 PM

The power of nostalgia/retirement... I've listened to Namie all day long!

bluegie 23rd September 2017 01:02 PM

I was going to buy 3CD+bluray, but found out that the video content is from Red Carpet and onward. The only new song I like from her is Mint from these two years, so probably I will just buy 3CD version.

Toniayu123 23rd September 2017 01:19 PM

Btw, I just read the japanese entry of her announcing her retirement, and it doesn't specifically say "ONE final album". It does say she wants to do as much as she can this year and mentions "album(s)" and concert(s)". Damn japanese ambiguity.
A fan can dream lol But seriously, I don't think Finally is the last album we'll get.

I think it's one of the best singles SUPER MONKEY'S have released though.

Yes, but her team posted the official English translation and there it says a final album.

I don't know if as a casual listener I should first go for a Best of or just get her albums? I guess I'll see what will be released in the near future.

And I also really like NEVER END. I don't know how popular it is among Namie fans, but I'd say it's one of my favourites. ^^

I love live version NEVER END when she performs with her fans.

I was hoping to have Checkmate 2, but it seems not possible :( Hopefully there is a Best B-side album.

Why do you guys hate so much _genic? It's such a fun and unpretentious album

I really want her to release a new album, but I haven't been impressed with her last single (can't understand the love for Hero) so I won't be mad if _genic is the last album.

YES! RESPECT the POWER of LOVE and LOVE 2000 are two of my favorite Namie songs, and I feel like neither of them get much love from (current) fans!

Yeah, it's going to be tough. Even her regular tours sell out at every stop, so this will be quite crazy.

If the rumors about a dome tour are true though, that will make a bit a bit easier.

Yep, this. :)

I'm sure the Best that's coming in November would be an excellent buy for a casual fan; give you an overview of the best stuff in her career.

Worst selling, but their best song IMO.

Those aren't always that great though. He is right that it doesn't specify how many albums.

But I'm pretty sure those 7 songs will be it; I mean combine that with her singles from the past 2 years and there is an album.

I also really love _genic. :love

ShiniTakashi 23rd September 2017 04:13 PM

I didn't expect to see so much love for that song. I definitely disagree, but we all have our own opinions.

The hate for _genic is undeserved. I get finding fault with it, but I really don't understand why so many people called it generic and unlistenable.

I think it's because it came after Feel, which was amazing and one of her most perfect albums (imo) so expectations were really high. _Genic isn't as good as Feel, but it's still a really good album, so I don't quite agree with all the hate for it either.

I agree cos FEEL was & still is really fantastic (was so obsessed with Heaven at the time of its release) and I also find myself not listening to _genic as much as I thought

Not to say that _genic was a bad album but listening wise , FEEL is more up there for me

lfe. 23rd September 2017 04:34 PM

I dunno, both had tracks with greatness that couldn't be measured but the rest weren't very memorable.. FEEL had Alive, Heaven, Hands On Me. The rest, they were a good listen every now and then but that was it for me. Same with _genic. It had Stranger, Golden Touch, What I Did for Love, Fashionista but the rest was meh.

The most complete album for me will still be PLAY or PAST < FUTURE.

Surreal17 23rd September 2017 04:36 PM

For me is the other way around. _genic is my favourite Namie album since Past < Future.

prussian blue 23rd September 2017 04:50 PM

I agree with FEEL is much upbeat than any other album, I always listen to the whole album when I'm exercising, I just get energized listening to all the tracks. _genic personally I think it's more an experiment album, which is okay once in a while.

For me, the only tracks I don't listen to are Can you feel this love and Big Boy Cry. The rest are all pretty much unskippable for me; but I really don't like those two at all.

In a way _Genic outpaces Feel then because there aren't any tracks that I feel like I just have to skip, but then there are only 2 or 3 tracks that are must listen for me; where as with Feel, aside from those 2 songs the whole album is a must listen.

Play I have actually thought was overrated; not a huge fan of a lot of the album tracks. Past Future however is up there with Feel for one of her best ever.

_genic was my gym album.

It sounds energic and I love it.Fashionista and Stranger were so great.

PURIN 23rd September 2017 05:42 PM

_genic is actually my favorite album of hers, still listen to it all the time!

thinkingoutloud89 23rd September 2017 06:17 PM

There is not as ingle Namie song I listend to less than 100 times. but there are a lot of songs I only listen to in the context of the album, like My Darling, Step With It, can you feel this love?, you are the one

The best songs in the album.

Surreal17 23rd September 2017 07:30 PM

What is your opinion about Still Lovin' You? It's in my top 20 most listened Namie songs but people seem to forget it exists.

thinkingoutloud89 23rd September 2017 08:04 PM

^I listen to it a lot recently, but it is just that tiny bit to long for me which makes it bland and draggy

One of my favourites of Namie's recent songs and in my opinion, the best song of the "BRIGHTER DAY" single.

thinkingoutloud89 23rd September 2017 09:33 PM

so Gubsi recommended to add Contrail to the "Essential Namie Amuro" playlist:
1. TRY ME
2. Body Feels EXIT
3. SWEET 19 BLUES
4. CAN YOU CELEBRATE?
5. RESPECT the POWER of LOVE
6. NEVER END
7. Uh Uh...
8. So Crazy
9. GIRL TALK
10. BABY DONT CRY
11. NEW LOOK
12. WILD
13. Love Story
14. Contrail
15. TSUKI
16. Golden Touch
17. Mint
18. HERO

Miduhyo 23rd September 2017 10:06 PM

Contrail is a great song, I definitely think it deserves to be on the playlist. I love the mv too. So colorful.

Ah, Namie. I'm going to miss her so much. I'm okay with it until I think about it and then I'm screwed with feeeeeeellllllliiiinnnngggggssssss.

thinkingoutloud89 23rd September 2017 10:11 PM

btw. here is a crazy theory, but I think we can all be glad that the Okinawa concert 5 years ago was cancelled, because I assume that she already had similar plans 5 years ago.

Look back at what we got: Uncontrolled. The strangest, most unlike-namie album we ever got with a huge pile a single leading up to it. adding to this is the strange imagery of that moon-phenomeno tying with her as some kind of goddess/millenia.

I guess she wanted to do that Okinawa concert so bad, she said she will keep going for another year, got a special record-deal for it (DS) and some obligations to fulfill (leading to Ballada and those recent pile of singles). she probably was more careful this time around - and wanted that thing to happen.

EndOfTheWorld 23rd September 2017 10:50 PM

When it comes to genic I only listen to Time Has Come, Birthday, It, Scream, Fly, and B Who I Want 2 B. Scream being the favorite. It really gets my energy up. Overall genic was an okay album for me. FEEL on the other hand, I can't stop loving that album. One of her all time best. Contrail.:luv2
Also, someone made this awesome history video of Namie. I'm glad I came across it. I would like it if all of her videos were uploaded officially to Youtube in HD.

The thought did cross my mind. Including the fact that right after what would have been the 20th Anniversary Okinawa live, she did a Dome tour (which if she was indeed going to retire then, would have been her farewell tour like they are going to do now). Those dome's would have had to be booked far in advance. There are a lot of signs imo, that she had planned to retire then. It is defintely an interesting possibilty at least. And if true, thanks typhoon?

One more conspiracy theory that crossed my mind: This is why they started Ayu's 20th Anniversary celebrations a year early; Avex knew that this would be coming from Namie.

ragingrush 23rd September 2017 11:49 PM

During the farewell Concert she's gonna debut Amuro Haruto and have him sing her farewell during the mc. Calling it now!

melissalove 24th September 2017 12:15 AM

I'm glad namie retired on a high note. It's impossible to do what she does on stage at 40.

MemorialAddress 24th September 2017 03:55 AM

I just pre-ordered Finally. First Japanese album I've purchased since 2009 lol

owlflight 24th September 2017 08:12 AM

Thanks for sharing that video, EndOfTheWorld. After watching it, now I'm really starting to feel sad that Namie is retiring. She got better with age. If she even aged at all. She looks fabulous and her hair is amazing.

I also think that she had already planed to retire 5 years ago but she really wanted to make this Okinawa concert because it where all started for her...
Thinking about it until the end her career will stay unique in the Japanese landscape.

Why? What she could do at 39, she can do at 40. If she wouldn't be able to, she could also tone down on dance routines and other things.
I just don't like all the "Stop, you're old" type of comments, even if you probably didn't mean it like that.

By the way, I really like Wonder Woman. It's so catchy.
