I'm listening to Spotlight now & there're surprises in a good way

For starters I didn't expect the 1st track Inochi was so angsty that was a shock for me LOL

But so far the overall feeling of Spotlight , it's a lot more experimental & upbeat

I was very happy that I could listen to the album on Spotify but suddenly all of their songs disappeared from there. sad. it seems like YUI hates Spotify or maybe it's a label thing? her discography is blocked outside Japan too.

I don't use Spotify so I can't comment but regarding FLOWER FLOWER's discography blocked outside of Japan , I'm not surprised

It's a Sony thing so it's hardly surprising . Artistes under them such as UVERworld , SID , Hirai Ken & etc also have the same problem which I feel is really annoying

That's why the past YouTube videos that FLOWER FLOWER posted on their account in the previous page of the thread , I decided to rip & upload them as I'm able to bypass them even though I don't live in Japan myself

I don't know why purpose this serves though :shrug but Sony fails to understand that there're so many people outside of Japan who're willing to pay & listen to their managed artistes , not just in Japan alone

End of the day don't they want to make more $ ? I don't get it

Pretty decent ranking but still somewhat weak physical sales.

That's what really upsets me. Those Sony protectionist policies. That's why, aside a few exceptions, such as miwa (this was older, but around the start of SMEJ acts starting to pop up on YouTube, only to find out it's geoblocked outside of Japan) and Sakamichi (Nogizaka46 and Keyakizaka46, derived from AKB48), I am not interested in Sony acts for the reason of YouTube being way too protectionist (which is the geoblocking outside of Japan). Okay, some of the acts such as those Sakamichi groups and SCANDAL now have a Vevo channel for non-Japanese viewers, but shouldn't there be more artists from SMEJ like miwa and FLOWER FLOWER that should have a Vevo channel for us foreign fans? (Isn't even Sony part of the Vevo consortium?)

Spotlight is really good. Barely any songs that don't just slap you across the face with greatness right off the bat. It's really hard to name special stand-outs when the songs are so consistently good, but I'd say I especially like Inochi (WHAT a way to open an album and show off a new direction for the band!), Coffee (love the classic FLOWER FLOWER keyboards), Anata to Taiyou (LOVE the whispers and atmosphere), Odori (makes me want to move and groove), and Tokei (it's got all the energy of many of the earlier songs in a sunny package this time, and it's great). FLOWER FLOWER is bringing more rock and energy than before, and it caught me by surprise, but it's good. I do feel the lack of slower, more atmospheric songs (like Negai or Aki) on this album and I miss them, but I'm sure they still have some of those up their sleeves for the future.

The fact that FLOWER FLOWER chose not to neither Takaramono or Mannequin in Spotlight signifies to quite a big extent on how confident they're regarding the new material in the album

That's risky but I've listened to albums that don't have any singles but yet they're absolute masterpieces

A music gamble FLOWER FLOWER undertook but it definitely pays off well in Spotlight

^ I'm geeking out over the fact that yui and NakamuraEmi are performing at the same event, they're some of my favourite artists in the current J-pop scene. :heart

I got my friend to buy Spotlight (and other CDs) for me while she was in Japan! I've played the album several times, it's so good. I've noticed that this album demands to be played loud, Inochi is SO GOOD when you crank the volume up and let it blast.

I think FLOWER FLOWER finally found their own sound in Spotlight . I felt for their previous releases , they were still searching what works and/or doesn't work for them

Spotlight joins a very selective few albums I have listened to over the years which have no singles but yet they're stellar from start until finish

I'm still surprised how unexpectedly good Spotlight is & it's much more well put together than Mi

The 4 years wait is definitely worth it , I just hope I wouldn't need to wait that long for another new album from them

And yeah , it's worth cranking up the volume to FULL blast in hearing Inochi , it's a such a great opening no. for sure

I wouldn't quite say that they finally found their own sound here -- I think they established their own sound right away on Mi and have now evolved it significantly in a new direction with Spotlight. But I do agree that they have gone quite a way in discovering what works for them: in hindsight, Mi seems to have a lot of throwing ideas at the record and seeing what sticks, while Spotlight is a much tighter package with a more self-assured sound.

I'm also still surprised at how good Spotlight is, it's such a strong album. Also, I love having it on CD, getting to hear it from speakers instead of headphones makes the whole listening experience different and fresh all over again.

Yeah I agree , while Mi wasn't a bad debut album , the sound consistency wasn't there & at times I can tell some songs worked for them while some don't

Spotlight feels a lot more put together & they sounds much more confident and assertive in deciding what type of music direction they plan to stick to

For them to exclude Takaramono & Mannequin from Spotlight , it means something . It's a risk they undertook but it most definitely paid off as I frankly don't have a bad thing to say about all the songs in Spotlight

It's not easy for artistes whose follow up albums sound a lot more better than their debut so for FLOWER FLOWER to be in this category , I'm real pleased about it & I'm sure the members are real proud what they've accomplished regarding Spotlight

can u imagine if she come back with her solo career? I would DIE jesus christ. I still love her solo songs so so much and I've been listening to them a lot.

I would love it if YUI comes back but she seems at ease being with FLOWER FLOWER for the time being

Alternatively , YUI can come back with a new solo release but still continue to partake in FLOWER FLOWER related activities

Just that I'm not sure if she's willing to juggle both at the same time

Some of YUI's material are still some of her best up to now , especially her more harder rock songs

^ yeah it doesn't seem like she's going to have a come back as a solo artist, at least for now. but I totally support FLOWER FLOWER since it's a much more experimental project and I've been loving their material with each release they put out!

and I totally agree, her heavier rock-oriented material is some of her all-time best. I'm listening to it very often!

Yeah at that time when YUI announced she was going on hiatus , I thought it was because of personal problems as she's known to have anxiety

So it was a surprise when she didn't left for long & came back as FLOWER FLOWER . At least it's not so bad as compared to leaving the industry for good

I'm still thankful that YUI made a PV for Jam even though it wasn't an A-side but to me , it should have been released as a single

Seems like yui will be performing with Anthem 4 at next Fri's VIVA LA J-ROCK ANTHEMS

On another note: I haven't really looked into FLOWER FLOWER's lyrics much, but a while ago I looked at translations to some songs while listening to Spotlight. The ones I read were really good! I almost teared up at Tokei's lyrics, they're almost cheesy but so full of love and honesty; Inochi's lyrics made me think of Kamisama, they have the same kind of ferocity and darkness; Coffee is a very raw account of why yui made the move away from her solo career, it really makes me feel for her. Now I'm curious to see the other lyrics as well, yui really impressed me with these.

I think yui looks the best with brown black hair . When FLOWER FLOWER 1st debuted , to see her in short blonde hair , it was quite shocking

I honestly love all the songs in Spotlight so regardless of what they perform in future music festivals , as long as it's from the album I have no complaints

Now I'm already hoping for some new FLOWER FLOWER material already

Fans were singing YUI's Rolling star as they wanted FLOWER FLOWER to perform it during the encore but yui said she hasn't played the song for quite sometime so in the end , they did CHE.R.RY

Very exciting , this sorta will be a homecoming for yui . Was hoping they will perform Inochi but I think it will scare people away who haven't heard the song xD

I thought they should have gone for Tokei cos it's the most radio friendly song in Spotlight imo but Powerful is a good choice nonetheless

I agree, Powerful is a good choice. Inochi would be amazing but might be a little too hard for the occasion. Tokei is a great song, but I'm not sure that it's as good a representative of the band and this album as Powerful. Or maybe they should just go full punk fuck-the-record-labels mode and do Coffee. :laugh

Coffee would have been another good choice too to perform live on TV but Powerful & Tokei are more safer bets for those who're not familiar with FLOWER FLOWER and/or didn't listen to Spotlight
