About Hikki
Spoiler:
Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter under the Emi Music Japan label. Utada is one of Japan's most successful artists of all time. Her debut album First Love is the #1 best selling album in Asian music history with over 7.65 million copies sold in Japan alone. In total she has sold over 38,000,000 million records in Japan, and 3 of her albums are in the Top 10 best-selling albums of all time in Japan (#1, #4, #8), making her one of the most successful and popular singers in J-pop history. Utada is bilingual as she was raised in both New York and Tokyo. She is also known in the west under her English language project name 'Utada', most famous for singing the Kingdom Hearts theme song, "Hikari / Simple And Clean" and the Kingdom Hearts II theme song, "Passion / Sanctuary". Initially, Utada's music had a heavy R&B style to it, but later her music progressed to a more pop / experimental tone. Her distinct R&B sound brought her much attention with her first release in Japan, "Automatic / time will tell". Utada was married to director Kiriya Kazuaki, who directed the movie CASSHERN, but in March 2007 the couple split.

On August 9, 2010, Utada announced plans to go on indefinite hiatus following the release of "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2", her second compilation album. On November 24, 2010, "Utada Hikaru SINGLE COLLECTION VOL.2" was released. It debuted atop the Oricon charts once again. It has also been anounced that Utada has severed ties with Island Def Jam, who releases her English language works. She has secured a global contract with EMI Music. Upon returning from her hiatus, all her future releases will be under the name Utada Hikaru regardless of the country of release.

Utada Hikaru has been deemed the Most Influential Japanese Artist of the past decade (2000-2010) by Japan Times.

No word yet on whether that title is for the English and/or Japanese version or when we will hear this new song.

ShiniTakashi 23rd September 2018 09:35 AM

Somehow Skrillex in the same sentence with Utada makes me apprehensive.

ahtka-chan 23rd September 2018 03:49 PM

Skrillex remixed Passion in one of his sets and it was boring as hell.

Also Poo Bear doesn't really produce good songs. At least, the ones I listened to were not great.

amorphose 24th September 2018 04:25 PM

I'm no fan of Skrillex either. I'd actually say I'm an anti-fan of him. lol However, when he produces things for other artists, it tends to be a lot better than the stuff he makes for himself. He and Poo Bear did about half of Justin Beiber's "Purpose" album, which I thought was actually really good. So I guess we will see. I'm just happy we're getting another Hikki song! (As long as it doesn't have any of that horrible dubstep noise in it.)

Gustavopc 24th September 2018 04:45 PM

Collabing with Skrillex and calling the song "Face My Fears" lolololol

bluegie 26th September 2018 05:24 AM

Hikki must be facing lots of fears while writing this song, and we will be facing our fears the moment she releases the song lol.

Ultra Blue is that shit and I will forever stan

I do look forward to the new song. I trust her songs to turn out well so I'm not really nervous. I do hope it fits the vibe of KH though as well.

Solarblade 28th September 2018 05:53 PM

Face My Fears

1. Face My Fears (Japanese Version) / Utada Hikaru & Skrillex
2. Face My Fears (English Version)
3. Chikai
4. Don't Think Twice

I wonder why it's "Utada Hikaru & Skrillex".... Is he important enough to be included? I mean, last time Ringo could only earn the title "Utada Hikaru feat. Shiina Ringo" for the vacation song...

I think Shiina only provided vocals to a song Hikki herself composed and arranged. Skrillex worked on both those aspects with Hikki this time around.

NintendoHTF1242 29th September 2018 03:51 AM

As a huge EDM fan and someone who has seen Skrillex live twice, I’m SO pumped for this collab. And I don’t think y’all need to worry about him doing ~Dubstep~ for the track. He’s produced plenty of amazing pop tracks. Regardless, can’t wait.

You mean, he will provide vocals to the new song as well?? :shakehead

Well I believe that there are no crappy songs from hikki. The worst scenario will be a mediocre song :P.

thinkingoutloud89 29th September 2018 11:08 AM

^zeke. did not say that. Creating a song together or just being asked to sing a part of it is a huge difference.

mi|kshake 29th September 2018 07:38 PM

YAY, new single! Can't wait to hear Face Your Fears - looking forward to hear what sort of song they have created together.

I don't know much of Skrillex's music but I like HATE which he was involved with for 4Minute.

Meat Pao 30th September 2018 06:28 PM

Who remembers Miracle Hikaru?

lmao

bluegie 1st October 2018 12:50 PM

She used to do good imitation of hikki back in the old time. Now her voice is so squeaky and nothing like hikki.

Examples of her past decent imitations:

She had already lost hikki''s touch when she sang Hanataba wo Kimi ni recently:

Btw is anyone going on the very first night (in Yokohama)?

The font looks like hand-writing.
The letter R are different. Not font-type.
Probably it is her hand-writing.

I love her picture in pencil strokes, but the font looks too thick/rounded to match the picture? Still a nice concept.

Maybe the font is supposed to look a little childish..? "Laughter in the dark" sounds a little childish, maybe..? No? Okay, I have no idea, I give up :D:D

Hikaru Utada Laughter In The Dark Tour 2018
Yokohama Arena, November 6th 2018

Notes/Thoughts:

• First song was “Anata.” She rose silently from the stage, more silence, then into the first line.
• Overall presentation was outstanding. Two large screens on the left and right, along with a massive screen behind her and the band. Several platforms on the stage that allowed for more lights/screens.
• Really really great arrangements. Standouts included “COLORS,” “Prisoner Of Love” and “Hikari”
• Definitely felt the first day nerves. She seemed a bit hesitant the first few songs, but got into it a few songs in.
• “Face My Fears” was a no show.
• Dancer Fukiko Takase (“Forevermore” MV choreographer) joined her onstage for “Tomodachi” and “Too Proud”
• “Too Proud” was a standout, Hikaru even joined Fukiko in a bit of a dance for parts of the song, and Jevon’s entire rap was replaced with a brand new original section including Hikaru rapping for the very first time.
• A central stage was used for several songs, (“Chikai,” “Manatsu no Tooriame,” and “Hanataba wo Kimini”
• She followed “First Love” with “Hatsukoi” (she messed up the first line of the later)
• Final song for the main part of the concert was “Play A Love Song”
• Encore was “Ore no Kanojo”(!!), “Automatic,” and closed the whole show with “Goodbye Happiness”
• Other tracks included : “Michi,” “Kiss & Cry,” “Forevermore,” “traveling”
• During the first costume change, a rather long prerecorded short film was included featuring Japanese writer Naoki Matayoshi. Truth be told, felt way too long and derailed the energy/momentum of the first section.
• Overall, very pleased with the show. Looking forward to seeing it filmed and presented!

Utada is not dressed up like a jellyfish-like collage of garbage bags or a Cruella DeVil after being torn by a paper shredder? OMG, 2018 is too much for me.

(by the way, loved the dress)

jean-baptiste 6th November 2018 08:24 PM

Great setlist. And she looks damn good

kotora 6th November 2018 08:50 PM

Omg. I love how simple she is in the tour.

Baco__ 6th November 2018 09:43 PM

Aren't there pictures of the second dress? Although my favorite one was the black, the black and white dress was a blast! She was SO beautiful! But don't worry, the dorky hikki was present in a video intermission hahaha

Utada's hair looks super shiny there. I never really enjoyed Utada's costumes so I'm glad her fashion is simple this time. I'm still loving that white dress and hairstyle she wore when she performed Hatsukoi on TV.

Again, no song from Distance (even though Distance is my least favourite album). I wonder why she skipped this entire album in both WILD LIFE and LAUGHTER IN THE DARK.

In the concert? Even if that's the case, I'm still kinda surprised that Hikki ditches the songs from that album. I kinda wanna hear Addicted To You live again, or maybe Wait & See :yes.

roxaskh2fm 8th November 2018 01:29 PM

Missed Passion :(

bluegie 9th November 2018 03:42 AM

Well I'm a bit shocked that she only sang one song from UB.

First Love (2): First Love, Automatic
Distance (0): None
DEEP RIVER (3): traveling, SAKURAドロップス, 光
ULTRA BLUE (1): COLORS
HEART STATION (2): Prisoner Of Love, Kiss & Cry
Single Collection Vol. 2 (1): Goodbye Happiness
Fantôme (5): 道, ともだち, 真夏の通り雨, 花束を君に, 俺の彼女
初恋 (6): あなた, Too Proud, 誓い, Forevermore, 初恋, Play A Love Song

Half of the songs in this concert are from her post-hiatus albums. I'm kinda shocked she didn't sing Flavor Of Life, consider this song was mega popular back in 2007.

freedreamer 9th November 2018 04:45 AM

Im said she didnt sing FINAL DISTANCE. Would die to hear it live but sadly...

EndOfTheWorld 9th November 2018 05:20 AM

I'm very disappointed that yunagi was not included.:(
Traveling and Colours has me the most excited.

And it's literally the oldest and the most performed song of the album.

That's the pity of her only touring once in a lifetime, we always get single-driven setlist and very few (when it happens) album tracks.

mi|kshake 16th November 2018 04:32 AM

Great looking setlist, happy to see Ore no Kanojo on there along with Sakura Drops, Travelling and Hikari. The main song missing for me is Shittosarerubeki Jinsei.

Most concerts are single-driven (hence lately there are more so called side-track concerts), but I believe UB has more than one popular songs. I know that UB probably was the "rock bottom" in her career (BML got less than 100K on the first week, Passion was the first single she couldn't get no. 1 (well no. 3 precisely), UB was the first album not getting over 1 million copies on the first week, and the only album not getting over 1 million copies overall before hiatus), but she did pretty well in digital (at least Keep Tryin' was pretty popular), and BLUE was pretty popular as the album song. Dunno why she only did one.

And for Distance... it remains as a mystery. Probably she hates the album as well lol.

Baco__ 17th November 2018 04:51 PM

again, I don't think she hates distance and there were excerpts of can you keep a secret, she even sang it... hahaha

well lately there are a LOT of people recording her concerts lol on the first day I didn't see one single person recording, but now there are many. that's nice :D

tokyoxjapanxfan 18th November 2018 11:04 AM

Does “as well” mean it’s a generally hated album?
I love it lol.

Chris85 19th November 2018 04:20 PM

Wow, I'm so glad filming wasn't banned. I'm watching second Fukuoka day videos now and she's in a surprisingly good vocal form. And the arrangements...I'm almost crying of joy and heartbreak that I'm not there.
Is there any info on filming for DVD or TV broadcast?

Xianghua 20th November 2018 08:06 AM

I don't believe they have announced broadcast info yet.

Good question lol. When I said "as well", it meant that I dislike the album, or I should say it is my least favourite album. Gotta admit that I got too much hype for it (due to Distance vs A BEST lol). It wasn't as good as I hoped for :P.

Anywayz back to the concert topic. I kinda wish it is a circular stage (like WILD LIFE). Then Hikki could walk around and people at the back could see her closer.

Baco__ 20th November 2018 11:41 AM

Believe me, the circular thing it's justa bad for anyone who's not in the middle hahahaha cause I was at a corner at the back and when she went to the middle i couldn't see almost nothing haha and she was on her back to us most of the time (although she was slowly spinning so everybody could see her)

Before the concert I was also hoping for a center stage, but then I thanked it wasn't haha

ahtka-chan 20th November 2018 08:11 PM

I don't think she hates Distance, it's just that she's a mother now and a woman in her 30s, it's probably very hard for her to connect with the lyrics she wrote back when she was 16 years old about lots of teenage experiences that she's way past it.

And that's natural, I mean, even Britney and BoA themselves said that they havve hard times performing Oops! and Valenti, respectively, 'cause they don't really feel the lyrics of the song anymore.

But WHO THE HELL does Skrillex think he is?! AUTOTUNING UTADA HIKARU'S VOICE?! Nah, he can take that back where it came from.

I love it before the "chorus" I specially like the part where it gets a funky beat. But it ain't bad... we'll just have to edit that part out when it comes lol

Agreed completely. Hopefully there's enough to play around with so it can be edited well :laugh

jean-baptiste 10th December 2018 01:59 AM

Not feeling the trailer/song. The sound of the production is too ubiquitous, not unique at all. And the editing of the video is so haphazard it was giving me a headache. Couldn't focus on anything.

Zeke. 10th December 2018 02:10 AM

She really should have worked with Porter Robinson. He created a whole album and artist concept inspired by things like Simple & Clean and that sound (+anime, Final Fantasy, Jpop, Japanese cyberpunk culture, etc.)

What a wasted opportunity.

The track with Skrillex isn't bad, but it's very adapted to his style, which I am not a fan of.

omg this is soooooo good!!!!!! I can't wait for HQ broadcast!

Xianghua 10th December 2018 07:30 AM

I liked the song until the dubstep kicks in. And yes about it sounding dated, I was under the impression that music was starting to move away from that.

Still looking forward to hearing the full version, though.

summerain 10th December 2018 08:10 AM

I really don't get this strange disease "if I don't like the artistic outcome, I'll go there, cut and edit it" that afflicts Utada fans. Jeez.

Andrenekoi 10th December 2018 08:16 AM

There are a lot of failed musicians in Utada's fandom. There's a reason why she is one of the best selling artists in Japan history while they just edit people out of her songs because they get annoyed everytime she collabs with someone who doesnt fit their otaku fantasy.

primavera♥ 10th December 2018 09:15 AM

Hmmm, it lacks the immersive and interesting atmosphere that earlier themes had. That extra layer that gives it more depth.

Like it's almost there, but it's not.

I will enjoy it as a hikki song but I would prefer more as the theme of the game.

minkAYuko 10th December 2018 09:21 AM

didn't know utada's producer/manager/family memebr or guy who works very hard to lend her money to make music had an account on AHS. Welcome! :D

Baco__ 10th December 2018 11:01 AM

I don't get why people get mad at people who doesn't like the "artistic" outcome of a song. Damn, they will edit and listen themselves, their headphones on, their edit, jeez.

I also hated the Skrilex dated addition. It's the worst type of dated style imho hahaha I will be a really sad person when new artists revive dubstep era of pop music in ten or twenty years from now lol

But I also know I'll be listening to it one thousand times because Utada lmao

Peace, guys. You like it, listen to it. You don't, edit, cut it out, make it bearable to your ears and that's it. The art she wanted to deliver will always be there, available when one misses it. Let's enjoy the joy of living in the XXI century and being able to do these kind of stuff. Chill.

(my dream is to edit KOHH out of Bokyaku, but I'm too lazy got that, so I just skip it sometimes)

I LOVED DON'T THINK TWICE <3

summerain 10th December 2018 11:13 AM

I liked Don't Think Twice, but didn't like some parts she decided to put addlibs instead of writing a piece of lyrics. Maybe I'm too used to Chikai. Or I can write a lyric himself, record, edit and replace it on my own playlist as a good Utada fan!!

Shades aside (and this one above was a joke haha), I agree you can like or dislike whatever you want and even make your own versions of it, it's your criteria. What bothers me the most is when fans go to social media bash people like Jevon because they didn't like his flow in Too Proud (and months later praising that heinous attemptive of Utada rapping, but this is another issue) or uploading "the real" Take 5 "complete version". These are the kind of actions that I find disrespectful, but that's just me.

Andrenekoi 10th December 2018 11:29 AM

One thing is disliking a work from an artist.

Another thing is literally editing someone out of the work they had part on. And sharing it all over the internet saying you saved said work. People don't announce those shit as fanmixes or remixes or whatever, what I think would be pretty ok. They announce that as they were fixing the work.

There's no respectful way of doing that. Actually, this is a very assholeish thing to do.

minkAYuko 10th December 2018 11:58 AM

anywho... Can't stop listening to both songs, even the short preview...I also feel too used to "chiaki". I'm getting used to the english lyrics.

EndOfTheWorld 10th December 2018 01:52 PM

I didn't see any mention that the remastered albums would be released physically.:think
I think the Skrillex collab is decent. But I do agree it sounds slightly outdated. Skrillex had his moment quite a few years ago now. His style isn't relevant like it was in the beginning of the decade. I wasn't expected the new themes to be better than the previous ones anyway. I guess overall it's still worth listening to.

KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK SCREAM

I actually wrote parts fro BoA's kiss my lips chorus cause I felt it was too empty with just "kiss my lips" and instrumental and would sing it whenever I listened to the song LMAO

About the saving the song blablablabla thing, yeah, I agree. That's disrespectful, for sure. I guess I would say the song is "saved", but more of jokingly and say it to jy friends only lol saddens me people can be THIS disrespectful. And I don't see myself saying something like this on Twitter, saying I saved their work, mentioning any artist involved. It's plain disrespectful and that's it...

PS: what is the take 5 complete version? Hahahah

(and damn who doesn't like Jevon's part?! It's so fun and good lol)

Meat Pao 10th December 2018 02:37 PM

I'm okay with the sound but I find the drop really empty-sounding... like it needs more bassy pizzazz at the back hahah (clearly not a musician cos I can't describe it)

EDIT: Has this new profile image of hers been shared? Noticed it when the Spotify This is Utada Hikaru playlist changed the thumbnail to this pic. It's on her official website's profile as well.

It's a fanmix with a "proper ending" for the song.

And of course you can joke around with your friends about the music being shit and needing to be saved, or some parts removed, etc. But removing people from the song and saying now the track is saved all over the internet is just plain rude.

Or when people replaced the original You & Me mix on the LOVE Again album for the orchestral one and shared it online as it was the offical release, this is also really disrespectful to the artist.

As far as I'm concerned people are free to do whatever they want to the tracks and share them if they feel like that, but there's no need to pass on the remixed version for the right one, as the jpop/kpop fandom enjoys doing sometimes.

Cahz- 10th December 2018 05:13 PM
