Excited to get a recording of it with her current vocals and I'm curious as to how it sounds in Chinese. It's interesting how she already got the offer last year and almost didn't do it. I wonder what it's for and who came up with the project.

She's had a few like RED LINE though too but MY ALL is the one that has persisted through the years.

I think that's very unlikely, covering lots of her own songs. A couple maybe, but I wouldn't put my coins on that. Probably this version will get a digital release and later will be featured as a chinese press bonus track of her next release.

It’s very cookie cutter but at the same time it’s extremely warm. I think it echoes the subject matter perfectly well. Like, for Ayu, it is that simple - to show the world, her fans, a never ending dream. It’s that simple dream of hers - to give dreams - that sustains the beating of her heart. I just want her to release a new single or album. It's been 3.5 years since MIJ. I'd just like to see her stop touring for a few months, hole up in a studio, and give us at least one final album. The best of the best. No corny la la la songs or para-para jingles. Something with the layers and investment we got from I am... That's what I want. A few more ballads, some good rock songs, a sequel for "Connected". Give us the 8 PVs one last time. Throw one last $2 million budget on a music video. And then I'll let her go.

I'm curious - how *is* her Chinese? There's no way I could tell whether her Chinese might sound natural or not. Can she speak it, or would she have learned the lyrics phonetically?

Is it common for Japanese people to be "well-versed" in Chinese and vice-versa...or is it more like myself, as an English speaker in North America, trying to learn either language...?

You could check out her Chinese version of Who... It seems that many only understood the lyrics while reading them (and that she definitely has a Japanese accent) but they applauded her for trying her best. As far as I'm concerned, ayu doesn't speak Chinese except knowing a few words/phrases at most.

^ that's kinda depressing. If nobody can understand it singing it in Chinese loses its purpose. Might as well listen to the original and read translation.

Other than a few stock phrases she probably doesn't know much Chinese at all (hello. thank you, etc.) so whatever she learned will be phonetic like how it usually is when Asian artists cross borders.

If anything Japanese people know some of the Chinese loanwords that exist in Japan but they are usually surprised about it like how 'tsunami', 'rickshaw', 'honcho', or 'futon' exist in English.

Her accent in Chinese Who.... was ultra heavy and mostly you could understand the chorus I think but the verses were really strange cause of the Japanese accent. It definitely sounds like someone who normally speaks Japanese attempting to sing in Chinese, to put it that way. It's probably the hardest to sing in for acts that do try it that don't normally do it. It will probably be a similar thing for this version of MY ALL. I don't think it's bad that she's attempted it though since it shows she cares at least. Sometimes Asian artists do English versions of songs and those don't even sound like English, lol. I wonder though if there was a bit more coaching or guidance from the guy born in Shanghai that helped on MY ALL this time around.

I love MIKA NAKASHIMA. But if you're looking for a good laugh, just listen to her cover of "What A Wonderful World". Or, as most of us know it, "What A Wandafu Wool".

Still. IMO it beats the terribleness of "All Hands Together", which was not only a bad song, but came months and months after the disaster that she recorded the single to donate for.

Everything else in her discography is audio gold. And that's honestly a huge part of why those two songs are so bad. For such a talented and iconic model and idol from the 00s, those two songs sound nothing like the rest of her discography. It's almost like she too has a little sister that performs cover versions of her songs that make Silent Hill look like a great family vacation.

lmao im dead I mean you can tell that she puts a lot of efforts in trying to have a good pronunciation but people still cannot understand her 10 years after her first attempt at singing in chinese

What happens I think is because she is reading it in katakana probably, a lot of the "sh" sounds blend. It's a lot like the Who... one and I don't really blame her though since she doesn't know Chinese aside from basic stuff like thank you. You can pick out a few words like shen bian or shi jian. She'd probably do a lot better with an English Who... but there's more of a market out there for Chinese versions.

It probably has to do with the fact that Japanese pronunciation is very linear compared to Chinese which has 4 tonalities, I don't know, I guess she had tips for singing it, but yes, Chinese is complicated after all.

I think you're overreacting a little bit. Her voice is pretty recognizable, she's just using a softer register. Listen to Sweet scar or untitled for her story 2, it's quite similar.

What's exactly so "overreacting" about stating that i can't recognise her voice? It may be similar, but it sounds very different to me and a few other people. It's an opinion. Not everyone is hearing the same thing *shrug*

What Timmy has done no one has ever done before and actually sing a correct translation correctly to the tempo :) (fans try as they might but they never truely match up to when we get offical translations. Example fans is more like broken English while when ayu gives English translations they are fluent and more like poems :P ) I know we would never get a ayumi English version but surely with him she can release even just a lyrics book of her songs translated 100% :)
Her voice probably doesn’t sound the same to some, I get what they mean but I can still her her sound. I think it comes from ayu concentrating on her pronunciation. A little more effort is needed when you are learning a song in a different language with tempo and pronunciations again :P

It's quite normal when people sing/speak in a different language they change the intonation, and sometimes sounds like a "different person". It's like when she speaks in english, her voice is a little lower than the usual.

I do feel that an english version would be better received, it would be easier to understand in general.

Well... Most singers sounds different when they sing in a different language, especially if they are nor comfortable in that language. I am a big fan of Nakamori Akina, she is a very skilled singer and I can barely reconize her on her first english Album (spoiler alert: she doesn't sound great on that album)

I remember how I didn't recognize Girugamesh use english words and lines until I saw the lyrics xD

I listened to the clip while reading the lyrics. Her Chinese pronunciation was better than I thought it would be.
